Hi all,
I followed the Guide posted by Intratech about updating and have a very strange issue with the update shown in the guide. (I can't post in Dev section since I'm new)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Sorry if my use of terminology isn't perfect, this is my first Android device.
I have a factory unlocked and non-branded Samsung Galaxy S2. It came with old firmware so I followed this guide to update to ZSKG2 Stock Kernel (the latest non-Frankenstein firmware shown in the guide).
The single tar *should* update my pda+phone+csc as mentioned in the instructions – however only my Kernel Version changed, everything else is the same. Detailed specs after update below:
Kies says:
Current Firmware: PDA:KE2 / PHONE: KE1 / CSC: KE1
"About Phone" menu says:
Android version 2.3.3
Baseband I9100XWKE1
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100ZSKG2-CL361136 [email protected] #6
Build Gingerbread.XWKE2
Label on phone (under battery) says:
Model GT-I9100
SSN: -I9100GSMH
Question:
Why did only my Kernel version change, when that single tar file is meant to contain pda+phone+csc. My baseband and build version and all others are same as before I updated.
Any idea what is happening here ? This isn't normal right ?
That would most likely be due to flashing the kernel and not the firmware package. The firmware package would be the one above the stock kernel and file size should be 269.23 MB in size.

Wow, yes indeed that was the issue. I read the thread like a dozen times, but I guess I didn't understand the distinction between firmware and kernel. Thought they're the same thing -_-
Got a related general question on updating, given my phone is non-branded shouldn't I get a non-branded firmware ?
Most of the firmware I see in the list is from a specific country, I just successfully updated to one firmware called ZSKF1.
Is there any chance to have a non-branded version of ZSKG2 or shall I just wait for Android 2.3.4 ?
Thanks
The firmware in that thread are not branded, they are unbranded firmware for different regions.
Ok I see. One more thing, I was asking some things on an IRC channel and I got the idea that it's dangerous to put a firmware of one region different than the region or CSC of the phone.
Is this true ? could it brick the phone ? If not i'll just go ahead and install the OZS (Hong Kong) version of ZSKG2 in the guide.

My phone screwed up yesterday and I starting having these same problems. eventually I found the way to fix it- full factory reset.
I know it seems drastic but it sorts everything. Use the code *2767*3855#
I updated my non-branded S2 to ZSKG2 firmware - OZS (Hong Kong) version found in the guide.
Then I did a factory reset after for good measure by putting the code Silently posted (*2767*3855#)
Everything works perfectly. Thanks for the help

Hi ,
I am using SGS2 from Germany (unbranded)
My initial firmware for KE2 and I then flashed KF2.
My current phone config is
Code:
PDA : I9100XXKF2
PHONE : I9100XXKF2
CSC : I9100XAKF2
Ofcourse as always for me, Kies is not working for firmware upgrade (is it because i have it rooted?)
Anyway I was checking the fiwmare details on CheckFusdownloader and found out today that the firmware for Europe is
Code:
I9100XWKF3/I9100XEUKD1/I9100XXKE7/I9100XWKF3
After downloading the file, the TAR looks like this
Code:
I9100XWKF3_I9100XXKE7_I9100XEUKD1_HOME.TAR
My questions are:
1. How can I map the above with Phone / PDA / CSC etc?
2. Is this the new firmware than KF2?
3. IS it worth moving to this firmware?
4. Would I be able to root?
My battery life seems to be somewhat improved from KE2 to KF2.
Thanks
The newest kernel is KG1 Gingerbread 2.3.4.
Move to KG1. Forget KF3. everyone's on KG1. Fixes battery life and other things Google talk+video.
It goes in alphabetical order efg so G is the newest KG1.
and I am assuming they are in order
So PDA then Phone then CSC.
My CSC is UNKNOWN LOL, true fact.
Latest firmware is KG2 and thats 2.3.3.
KF2 is slighly older than KF3 .
KG12.3.4 is not a Samsung release its a leaked test firmware .
Root yes read the root post in dev section ..
My view wait for 2.3.4 to be released by Samsung for next upgrade if phone is working OK .
jje
1- As long as you are on stock firmware Kies won't make any difference, rooted or not.
2- AFAIK KF2 is the newer build than KF3 and the latest available for Europe.
3- Press *#1234# to see software info.
4- I'd say you should wait for official KG1 to be released. The current one is leaked and have bugs, so better avoid it.
Regards.
Sent from GT-I9100
I'd look up Lite'ning rom 2.2 if i were you...
Roots your phone, KG1 and all in there. Also Gingerbread 2.3.4.
Works perfect for me. Why wait for the official update. Modders will implement it very fast.
Good luck!
If you change to KG1 dont bother flashing the CSC, use the one you have at the moment.
I am not sure if there is much advantage to that KF3 based rom over KF2, so if you are happy with KF2 and dont want to jump to KG1 (which is working perfectly for me, I dont use stock browser) I wouldn't bother.
Yes you would be able to root btw, just use the KF3 kernel from chainfire.
Thanks guys for your feedback
BTW whats with CSC what will happen if I mess with it? phone will get bricked? lets s say if I flash CSC from another country will i be able to go back to Europe CSC?
Is this only for language?
CSC is only a few text files and xml files with lists of networks etc .
Not really needed for phone to work and a new one can easily be flashed .

So that means i can flash any country's SGS2 firmware? Whats with baseband? have any info on that?
Baseband = modem/radio.
Yes flash any firmware and enter the networks APN manually as long as its on the same mhz it will work .
But if you flash Chinese firmware it will have Chinese keyboard etc .
PDA = firmware including kerel
Phone = modem/radio/baseband
CSC = country specifics with a list of local networks keyboard to use language to use etc .
Many firmwares are multi CSC say covering most of Europe .

Thanks mate for the clarifications

You can't, the device can only have one modem at a time.
thanks infratech, I mean more of flashing one baseband and reflashing another version. sorry too bad in explaining

You will just replace the old one.
Hi guys,
I just bought a Galaxy S2 and I want to flash a newer firmware.
The firmware I intend to flash (XXKG1) comes with PDA, MODEM and CSC.
Is it possible to flash just it's PDA part? Would there be any implications on that?
Why would I want that? Because the original firmware (Brazil - VIVO carrier) I could find only came with the PDA part. So if I flash CSC or MODEM, there is no way back.
The CSC is different from mine. Would that be a problem?
Thanks in advance
AFAIK the CSC is installed into the system partition, so even when you only flash the PDA part you're going to loose your current CSC setup.
However, if the FW comes as seperate .tar files you can just flash the PDA one, yes.
You can take care of a "way back" if you first install CF-Root for example and then do a backup from recovery mode.
Restoring that back gets you pretty close to "nothing ever happened" - it doesn't backup the moden though, only system and data.
Uhmm... weird, even on ODIN you have a separate button for the CSC.
What are the consequences of changing the CSC?

As the above poster mentioned It really depends how the firmware is packaged
Intratech's firmware are packed in one TAR ( Pda/phone/csc ) is just one zip, which you put in the PDA section and it flashes all three of them within
If you get three seperate files then you put them in their corressponding order of ODIN
In this instance you can choose to keep your current CSC and not flash that one.
Although I am not sure if It has any effect between 2.3.3 and 2.3.4
Just to clarify CSC subject:
I live in Kazakhstan. My present setup (from *#1234#)
PDA: I9100XEKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100XEKE1
believe all available official samsung firmwares are issued do exist for different region(i.e. Kazakhstan is not included)
How safe is it to flash the 2.3.4 firmware now (KG2) ?
What can I possibly loose using the KG2 firmware from Samsung ? As u understand phone language is not a problem for me.....so wonder anything else I omit ?
Thanks for help
Sorry to bump in....
Hello, I am relatively new to forums, only discovered it since I got my galaxy s2, which was a month ago.
Anyways I have similar questions, and I read a bunch of topic which only made me even more confused about what to do, and didn't want to make a new thread so I bumped in here
If inappropriate, please ignore me.
Anyways, Ive got:
PDA: I9100XWKE1
PHONE: I9100XWKE1
CSC: I9100OJVKE1
It is an stock firmware, and I guess a ROM...
I want to update to 2.3.4 but waiting seems not to be a better side of me so I decided to do it manually.
My question is with what should I update with?
As far as I understand, latest official firmwares can be found in the Intratech's post ( the XXKG2 one ).
But I am worried about the CSC part, and how will it affect my phone?
As far as I understand CSC carries localization of a sort, for some network configuration, but my provider sends config messages, and only language I use in phone is English.
Will random CSC part affect me?
Can I even update from my current firmware to the latest one? or do I need to update to other one first?
Will update wipe my data? ( it seems no as far as I understood from guide )
Will the phone be full "stock" ( basically like I bought it with that firmware), and will I be able to update on later time with KIES ?
What kinda of problems (if any) might I expect with upgrading this way? ( if presumably I do everything as I should, i.e. as per guides )
Once again, I apologize for bumping this thread, and I thank you for any help you provide.

Hey guys,
I am very new to android and this forum as well
I bought my sgs2 outright from Optus Telechoice, and recently i upgraded its firmware via Kies.
This is the firmware information shown in Kies whenever the phone is connected with usb:
PDA:KG1 / PHONE:KF3 / CSC:KG1 (OPS)
it says this is my current and the latest firmware.
*NEVER rooted my phone before, phone was shipped with KE7 if not mistaken.
Ok my question starts here, i've been reading forums for quite a while, and i notice that very few user have the same firmware as mine. i wonder why?
First of all, I heard that the official 2.3.4 firmware has been released via KIES, i really like to get the update but KIES said my current firmware is the latest.
I read this sentence from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
saying that:
These packages below are not official firmware packages, they are Frankenstein package created due to demand for Firmware with different CSC and modems. KIES will not recognise the firmware so you won't be able to update to new firmware using KIES unless you flash back to a firmware meant for your device first. Otherwise there will always be Odin to use for updates
and i found the exact same firmware version as shown in my KIES:
Optus OPSKG1 CSC: http://www.multiupload.com/EPWZTIMS1F
which proves that my current version is a kind of so called
+++++++[Frankenstein Firmwares]+++++++, which may restrict me from receiving the latest firmware.
As mentioned from the above, 'KIES will not recognise the firmware so you won't be able to update to new firmware using KIES unless you flash back to a firmware meant for your device first.'
In this case, which firmware is meant for my device?!
* I really wanted to get rid of the Optus bloatware by flashing the stock firmware PLUS get the latest official update 2.3.4 rolled out by KIES.
Can anyone please teach me how and what to do? appreciate that and thanks in advance to any who reply me.
*i am an adroid newbie pls bear with me!
Images shown in my sgs2 and KIES:
PDA:KG1 / PHONE:KF3 / CSC:KG1 (OPS)
it says this is my current and the latest firmware.
CORRECT
First of all, I heard that the official 2.3.4 firmware has been released via KIES, i
NO
i notice that very few user have the same firmware as mine. i wonder why?
Because they have flashed a later version via ODIN of stock Samsung firmware that may be a leaked version .
which proves that my current version is a kind of so called
+++++++[Frankenstein Firmwares]+++++++,
No not if you updated via Kies you are not understanding the post .
In this case, which firmware is meant for my device?!
The one you have on it is the latest for your device as installed by Kies .
I really wanted to get rid of the Optus bloatware by flashing the stock firmware PLUS get the latest official update 2.3.4 rolled out by KIES.
One Samsung path and wait for 2.3.4 to be rolled out by your network via Kies .
Or two unofficial method of updating firmware using stock Samsung firmware flashed via Odin.

Hi,
First of all thank you for the replies.
are you sure the official 2.3.4 hasn't come out via KIES?
I read some posts regarding the official release though.
Once again from my understanding, my kind of firmware (PDA:KG1 / PHONE:KF3 / CSC:KG1 (OPS)) is actually released by Optus via KIES, it is actually more like the OPTUS (and australian phone carrier) version of this firmware, thats why there are few users compared to the majority.
So what u mean is even though others (non-optus user) might get the update BUT i have to wait for OPTUS itself to roll out the update via KIES, right?
Okay lets not talk about official 2.3.4.
AND one more thing, i would really like to remove the Optus bloatware by flashing STOCK firmware via Odin, but i have no idea which STOCK firmware i have to choose from. i'm aware that there are a lot of stock firmwares available from the link provided above, but which is the appropriate as well as the latest STOCK firmware for my unit.
Since my current firmware is PDA:KG1 / PHONE:KF3 / CSC:KG1 (OPS), obviously it is a Optus-based firmware, so which STOCK firmware do i have to choose from? what is the 'stock version' for my current firmware as listed from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
i am really stuck here. Hope you understand my situation.
Thanks once again mate

Hi, Im kind of new to this.
I looked in a couple forums on how to flash the Official ICS rom. but I would like to know can I just pick any official ICS firmware and flash it?
my phone is:
android version- 2.3.6
Baseband version- I9100XXKI1
I know the firmware I have now is the Chinese one but would like to flash the European one. The person I bought the phone off of seemed to have flashed the Chinese firmware 2.3.6 themselves and I couldn't use Kies to update it, not sure if the phone was originally the Chinese firmware or not.
These were the two sites I was looking at to flash it:

and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
also is there a difference between those websites for the latest ICS firmware?
any help would be appreciated. thank you!

Shouldn't matter. The reason Kies won't update it now though is probably because the original owner flashed a firmware that has a CSC that doesn't match your location/carrier. You should be able to flash any I9100 firmware you wish, as long as it is NOT an I9100G firmware.

Those two are pretty much the same, if you are looking at the same versions. (e.g. XWLP4) They are just hosted on different sites. I think the one on Intratech's thread may have the older bootloaders included instead of the newer ones (newer ones which prevent USB jigs from resetting the binary flash counter), and the one on Faryaab's thread probably has the newer bootloaders, but that should be the only difference.
And that difference probably doesn't matter much, as I believe with ICS, you can use Chainfire's "Triangle Away" app to reset the counter regardless of which bootloaders you have. (but I don't know that info for sure)
Thanks for the help, just flashed it and works great !
Hi all,
This is my first time here and also trying to update firmware(my friend used to do it but he moved now)

Thanks for bearing with me
Siddharth
Download JB stock firmware for your country from Samfirmware (Which one ? Take your pick); flash with Odin following instructions in thread stickied near top of Q&A. How to root ? This stuff has been asked/answered thousands of times over the past 2.5 yrs; search (hint: same thread has a root method, if that doesn't do it for you, others are easily found).
Yes, you can flash stock firmware for other countries if you want.

Thanks for the info. my problem was I could decide which firmware to flash. so how do I get to know if mine is latest or not?
I can flash the firmware for any country and it wont mess up my device?
Samfirmware lists firmware from newest to oldest. So...If you look at the list for either of the Indian firmware groupings (INU & ODD), the latest is at the top (as it is for any country/carrier).
So far as the current firmware that is on your phone being the latest or not, I have no idea as it's obviously not an Indian firmware. You're going to need to go through the lists at Samfirmware to find out what region it's from/whether it's the latest.
Yes, flashing stock firmware for another country/carrier is fine. The only thing it sometimes used to affect is OTA updates, sometimes you'd be unable to get them if you flashed a stock firmware not for your region. But this is now a moot point as it's highly unlikely there will be further firmware releases for this phone by Samsung.
Thanks
