[Q] Few questions before firmware upgrade - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I just bought a Galaxy S2 and I want to flash a newer firmware.
The firmware I intend to flash (XXKG1) comes with PDA, MODEM and CSC.
Is it possible to flash just it's PDA part? Would there be any implications on that?
Why would I want that? Because the original firmware (Brazil - VIVO carrier) I could find only came with the PDA part. So if I flash CSC or MODEM, there is no way back.
The CSC is different from mine. Would that be a problem?
Thanks in advance

AFAIK the CSC is installed into the system partition, so even when you only flash the PDA part you're going to loose your current CSC setup.
However, if the FW comes as seperate .tar files you can just flash the PDA one, yes.
You can take care of a "way back" if you first install CF-Root for example and then do a backup from recovery mode.
Restoring that back gets you pretty close to "nothing ever happened" - it doesn't backup the moden though, only system and data.

Uhmm... weird, even on ODIN you have a separate button for the CSC.
What are the consequences of changing the CSC?

As the above poster mentioned It really depends how the firmware is packaged
Intratech's firmware are packed in one TAR ( Pda/phone/csc ) is just one zip, which you put in the PDA section and it flashes all three of them within
If you get three seperate files then you put them in their corressponding order of ODIN
In this instance you can choose to keep your current CSC and not flash that one.
Although I am not sure if It has any effect between 2.3.3 and 2.3.4

Just to clarify CSC subject:
I live in Kazakhstan. My present setup (from *#1234#)
PDA: I9100XEKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100XEKE1
believe all available official samsung firmwares are issued do exist for different region(i.e. Kazakhstan is not included)
How safe is it to flash the 2.3.4 firmware now (KG2) ?
What can I possibly loose using the KG2 firmware from Samsung ? As u understand phone language is not a problem for me.....so wonder anything else I omit ?
Thanks for help

Sorry to bump in....
Hello, I am relatively new to forums, only discovered it since I got my galaxy s2, which was a month ago.
Anyways I have similar questions, and I read a bunch of topic which only made me even more confused about what to do, and didn't want to make a new thread so I bumped in here
If inappropriate, please ignore me.
Anyways, Ive got:
PDA: I9100XWKE1
PHONE: I9100XWKE1
CSC: I9100OJVKE1
It is an stock firmware, and I guess a ROM...
I want to update to 2.3.4 but waiting seems not to be a better side of me so I decided to do it manually.
My question is with what should I update with?
As far as I understand, latest official firmwares can be found in the Intratech's post ( the XXKG2 one ).
But I am worried about the CSC part, and how will it affect my phone?
As far as I understand CSC carries localization of a sort, for some network configuration, but my provider sends config messages, and only language I use in phone is English.
Will random CSC part affect me?
Can I even update from my current firmware to the latest one? or do I need to update to other one first?
Will update wipe my data? ( it seems no as far as I understood from guide )
Will the phone be full "stock" ( basically like I bought it with that firmware), and will I be able to update on later time with KIES ?
What kinda of problems (if any) might I expect with upgrading this way? ( if presumably I do everything as I should, i.e. as per guides )
Once again, I apologize for bumping this thread, and I thank you for any help you provide.

[Q] Which firmware should I have to use it???

Hello,
Im on KE2 firmware at the monent however when I got on to kies KE2 is the latest firmware.
As far as I know latest official firmware is KE8?? isnt it?
So Id like use odin to flash KE7 or higher firmware on it.
Here is question....
1.
Currently on
PDA: I9100XWKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100XFKD4
Am I able to upgrade to
I9100XWKE7 CSC-XEUKD1 without any problem??
If not what kind of CSC do I have to use it?
Im currently at New Zealand with parallel imported SII.
2. If I change to KE7 or higher with odin does it make avoid warrenty?
Thanks.
I experienced the same thing. what I did was I asked the place I bought the phone from if the warranty would expire if I flashed XWKE7 UK version to my phone, they told me no since it pretty much is no bigger difference between that update and the forthcoming one(I live in Sweden).

if u find ur csc in there..download csc file..
download frankestein firmware file..
and replace ur country's csc file with the one in frenkestein package..
NOTE:it will WIPE all the data in d phone..
and after the first select ur country's csc code by typing *#272*Device IMEI# into the dial pad and selecting the csc of your choice and press install. It will reset the device.

Hi guys, I'm quite a n00b at all this, new to android
I have a question about this kernels/roms as well.
I have updated samsungs firmware (KF2) as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
After that I rooted my phone as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Now, I came across an overclock! Here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13709259#post13709259
Which seems really interesting.
My question is: will I loose my KF2 ROM/kernel if I flash this overclock kernel?
Can I even apply the mod with my KF2 kernel?
And what exactly is the difference between a ROM and kernel anyway?
Thank you! Trying to read up a lot, but it's not easy being a simpleton

[Q] Question on firmware information

Hi ,
I am using SGS2 from Germany (unbranded)
My initial firmware for KE2 and I then flashed KF2.
My current phone config is
Code:
PDA : I9100XXKF2
PHONE : I9100XXKF2
CSC : I9100XAKF2
Ofcourse as always for me, Kies is not working for firmware upgrade (is it because i have it rooted?)
Anyway I was checking the fiwmare details on CheckFusdownloader and found out today that the firmware for Europe is
Code:
I9100XWKF3/I9100XEUKD1/I9100XXKE7/I9100XWKF3
After downloading the file, the TAR looks like this
Code:
I9100XWKF3_I9100XXKE7_I9100XEUKD1_HOME.TAR
My questions are:
1. How can I map the above with Phone / PDA / CSC etc?
2. Is this the new firmware than KF2?
3. IS it worth moving to this firmware?
4. Would I be able to root?
My battery life seems to be somewhat improved from KE2 to KF2.
Thanks
The newest kernel is KG1 Gingerbread 2.3.4.
Move to KG1. Forget KF3. everyone's on KG1. Fixes battery life and other things Google talk+video.
It goes in alphabetical order efg so G is the newest KG1.
and I am assuming they are in order
So PDA then Phone then CSC.
My CSC is UNKNOWN LOL, true fact.
Latest firmware is KG2 and thats 2.3.3.
KF2 is slighly older than KF3 .
KG12.3.4 is not a Samsung release its a leaked test firmware .
Root yes read the root post in dev section ..
My view wait for 2.3.4 to be released by Samsung for next upgrade if phone is working OK .
jje
1- As long as you are on stock firmware Kies won't make any difference, rooted or not.
2- AFAIK KF2 is the newer build than KF3 and the latest available for Europe.
3- Press *#1234# to see software info.
4- I'd say you should wait for official KG1 to be released. The current one is leaked and have bugs, so better avoid it.
Regards.
Sent from GT-I9100
I'd look up Lite'ning rom 2.2 if i were you...
Roots your phone, KG1 and all in there. Also Gingerbread 2.3.4.
Works perfect for me. Why wait for the official update. Modders will implement it very fast.
Good luck!
If you change to KG1 dont bother flashing the CSC, use the one you have at the moment.
I am not sure if there is much advantage to that KF3 based rom over KF2, so if you are happy with KF2 and dont want to jump to KG1 (which is working perfectly for me, I dont use stock browser) I wouldn't bother.
Yes you would be able to root btw, just use the KF3 kernel from chainfire.
Thanks guys for your feedback
BTW whats with CSC what will happen if I mess with it? phone will get bricked? lets s say if I flash CSC from another country will i be able to go back to Europe CSC?
Is this only for language?
CSC is only a few text files and xml files with lists of networks etc .
Not really needed for phone to work and a new one can easily be flashed .

So that means i can flash any country's SGS2 firmware? Whats with baseband? have any info on that?
Baseband = modem/radio.
Yes flash any firmware and enter the networks APN manually as long as its on the same mhz it will work .
But if you flash Chinese firmware it will have Chinese keyboard etc .
PDA = firmware including kerel
Phone = modem/radio/baseband
CSC = country specifics with a list of local networks keyboard to use language to use etc .
Many firmwares are multi CSC say covering most of Europe .

Thanks mate for the clarifications
one quick question. What happens if i try to update phone with multiple basebands?

You can't, the device can only have one modem at a time.
thanks infratech, I mean more of flashing one baseband and reflashing another version. sorry too bad in explaining

[Q] Firmware update problem - only Kernel changes

Hi all,
I followed the Guide posted by Intratech about updating and have a very strange issue with the update shown in the guide. (I can't post in Dev section since I'm new)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Sorry if my use of terminology isn't perfect, this is my first Android device.
I have a factory unlocked and non-branded Samsung Galaxy S2. It came with old firmware so I followed this guide to update to ZSKG2 Stock Kernel (the latest non-Frankenstein firmware shown in the guide).
The single tar *should* update my pda+phone+csc as mentioned in the instructions – however only my Kernel Version changed, everything else is the same. Detailed specs after update below:
Kies says:
Current Firmware: PDA:KE2 / PHONE: KE1 / CSC: KE1
"About Phone" menu says:
Android version 2.3.3
Baseband I9100XWKE1
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100ZSKG2-CL361136 [email protected] #6
Build Gingerbread.XWKE2
Label on phone (under battery) says:
Model GT-I9100
SSN: -I9100GSMH
Question:
Why did only my Kernel version change, when that single tar file is meant to contain pda+phone+csc. My baseband and build version and all others are same as before I updated.
Any idea what is happening here ? This isn't normal right ?
That would most likely be due to flashing the kernel and not the firmware package. The firmware package would be the one above the stock kernel and file size should be 269.23 MB in size.

Wow, yes indeed that was the issue. I read the thread like a dozen times, but I guess I didn't understand the distinction between firmware and kernel. Thought they're the same thing -_-
Got a related general question on updating, given my phone is non-branded shouldn't I get a non-branded firmware ?
Most of the firmware I see in the list is from a specific country, I just successfully updated to one firmware called ZSKF1.
Is there any chance to have a non-branded version of ZSKG2 or shall I just wait for Android 2.3.4 ?
Thanks
The firmware in that thread are not branded, they are unbranded firmware for different regions.
Ok I see. One more thing, I was asking some things on an IRC channel and I got the idea that it's dangerous to put a firmware of one region different than the region or CSC of the phone.
Is this true ? could it brick the phone ? If not i'll just go ahead and install the OZS (Hong Kong) version of ZSKG2 in the guide.

My phone screwed up yesterday and I starting having these same problems. eventually I found the way to fix it- full factory reset.
I know it seems drastic but it sorts everything. Use the code *2767*3855#
I updated my non-branded S2 to ZSKG2 firmware - OZS (Hong Kong) version found in the guide.
Then I did a factory reset after for good measure by putting the code Silently posted (*2767*3855#)
Everything works perfectly. Thanks for the help

[Q] Help! The confuzed relation between 'sale code' and firmware!

My S2 came from 'expansys online' and had the information below and no update in KIES.
PDA: XWKI4
Modem: XXKI1
CSC: OXAKI2 (SEB)
I changed the sales code to NEE by '*#272*IMEI#' and then KIES asked me to update to the following version.
PDA: XWKI8
Modem: XXKI4
CSC: OXAKI2(NEE)
Then I flashed stock firmware from Intratech's thred. But KIES said my phone cannot be updated by it. I check the information by '*#272*IMEI#' and there is just one work 'NEE' after 'sales code' and NOTHING SHOWN BELOW(before there were a list i can select). I thought I should have one 'XEN' to select at least but nothing.
The flashing should be successful because there were some apps with Dutch language.
PDA: XWKJ3
Modem: XXKI4
CSC: XENKJ1
At latst yesterday I flashed KK5 combination from Intratech's thred and succeed (with special apps like bbc i-player) but problem is still there. I cannot see any CSC to select by '*#272*IMEI#'.
KIES says the firmware 'I9100XWKK5/I9100XEUKH2/I9100XXKI3/I9100XWKK5' cannot be updated by it.
So anybody know how to solve it or who know which combination can be updated by KIES?
Anyone can give a help?
I dont really understand what you are trying to achieve .
Kies looks at Product Code and a few other codes .These are then matched against firmware on the Kies server . No match = no download .
Why vendor not updated
product Codes do not match any firmware .
Kies may not be able to match up the current codes on your phone .
You have a phone you changed its sales code
you updated then you flashed stock firmware then you flashed stock firmware again .
You want latest firmware then flash stock rom and flash relevant CSC to your location .

My question is why there is no CSC which I can select after I call '*#272*IMEI#'. There is just one word 'NEE'. No CSC list.
I flash XEU so I think at least there should be XEU CSC and the word should be changed from NEE to XEU. But the fact is not so.
And how to change product code?
You flashed the Frankenstein version of KK5 which is a combination that Intratech put together, and he placed it in the FRANKENSTEIN section, Kies will not recognize it, in order to flash with Kies, stay with stock roms/combinations.
The biggest question is why do you want to flash with Kies and with ODIN, pick one and stick with it, flash the CSC separately if you do not see it, or download CSC select from the market.

what I most warry about is why there is no XEU displayed. After calling *#272*IMEI# just 'Sales Code : NEE' is displayed (sorry no image). Anyone whose phone just has non-multi CSC can show me your infromation after calling.

[Q] Galaxy Ace GT-S5830i Flashing a stock firmware question/help!

Hello guys. Yes i'm a noob and i have tried desperately to find the info out myself but i'm getting myself SO confused, i hope someone can help me out a bit and clarify a few things for me.
I have a SAMSUNG GALAXY ACE GT-S5830i which is a United Kingdom model phone unlocked to all networks but it was getting very worn and tatty so i went out this morning and purchased a brand new SAMSUNG GALAXY ACE GT-S5830i phone (identical model) however this one came supplied as locked to the o2 network and is o2 branded on all the startup/shutdown screens.
I figured i could simply re-flash a stock firmware to it to lose all of the o2 branding and return it to the standard Samsung startup/shutdown screens (and possibly unlock the phone to all networks during the process but i'm not that bothered about doing that as it doesn't really matter to me)
On the handsets I have gone into SETTINGS> ABOUT PHONE> and the details are as follows:
Model Number: GT-S5830i
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: S5830iXXLK1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #1
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXLK3
...and these details are the same for both the old phone and the new o2 branded one.
Now then, here's where i'm at: when i do things i'm not only doing them to get to the 'end goal' but also to learn and educate myself along the way, but so much of the information out there assumes that you already know what they are talking about or is just too confusing as it doesn't explain enough. I have gotten myself very confused lol.
I want to be able to 'de-brand' the new phone so that it is just like the old one, and to do that i'd like to understand what i am doing a bit more, like the baseband version and build number (XXLK1 and XXLK3 are bpth quoted in the 'About Phone' menu) and i don't understand what file i should be downloading as all i can find is labelled as GT-S5830iXXLK3 so would this be the correct firmware for my handsets as i thought they were listed by Baseband (which is XXLK1 not XXLK3 but the bit in the phone's build number says XXLK3 even though the actual phone's Baseband says XXLK1) can you see why i am confused? lol!
I'd like to be as sure as i can be prior to flashing so i don't make any silly mistakes.
I have:
KIES software,
USB Drivers (i think)
ODIN v3.07 software,
Standard Samsung supplied USB cable,
Windows 7 32bit.
Can anyone help me to understand why the firmware sets are in several split files and help confirm which firmware i do actually need for the baseband type of my two handsets.
I'm also intending to make a backup of each phone prior to flashing so i hopefully do not brick any devices. Maybe i could even read the firmware of one phone and flash to the other? Perhaps i'll just stick to finding a suitable stock firmware and keep it simple
Any help, information, education is all appreciated, and i hope as a noob to the forum i haven't breached any set rules with this post (i don't think i have but you never know!)
Kindest regards,
Drew

read my thread or signature.
I have loaded KIES and got some more information:
On the older SAMSUNG GALAXY ACE GT-S5830i (unlocked to all networks) it says: PDA:LK3 / PHONE: LK1 / CSC: LK1 (BTU)
On the newer SAMSUNG GALAXY ACE GT-S5830i (locked and branded o2) it says: PDA:LK3 / PHONE: LK1 / CSC: LK1 (O2U)
So clearly i can see the difference here between the new phone with it's o2 network branded firmware, and assume that the only thing i need to change over on the new phone is the CSC part, which ODIN looks like it can do by simply adding a new CSC file in.
Anyway, i went to the SamMobile Firmware site and have downloaded:
GT-S5830i - United Kingdom - BTU
PDA: S5830IXXLK3
CSC: S5830IBTULK1
Version: 2.3.6
Date: 2012-11-23
...which gives me a zip file named: S5830IXXLK3_S5830IBTULK1_BTU.zip
Here's where i just got more confused lol... the thread you pointed me to gets a bit confusing as lots of people are posting allsorts on it, but am i right in thinking once i have that file i just downloaded i go into ODIN v3.07 and just add that file into the PDA section and then untick all the boxes? This seems a bit different to some of the other Odin instructions i have read where they say tick certain boexes and do this, do that etc...
This way seems to be involving reflashing the PDA, and PHONE sections maybe? Am i not just wanting to flash CSC parts? I am SO confused now.
Can anyone help clarify a little more? I can't quite see how you make a firmware backup using ODIN before proceeding to actual flashing. I'd like to make a backup first before i do anything

...which gives me a zip file named: S5830IXXLK3_S5830IBTULK1_BTU.zip
I'd like to make a backup first before i do anything

if you want only the UK one, search on sammobile.com, u might find it!
why do you want stock rom?
you could install firmwares of other countries but u "might" face network problems!
backup your imei via galaxy toolbox app if you do so!!
u could flash a custom rom!!
