Apps and Google account sync not working - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When ever I flash firmware or do a factory reset, the apps are lost (ofcourse that is the behavior). But I was under the impression that when I sign in again and goto Market, I could get all the installed apps back. I was somehow thinking the apps I download (free ones ) are linked my google account. But it looks like this is not the case.
Any idea how I can sync the apps installed with my google account?
Thank you

You probably have disabled the option 'Keep my device backed up with Google' option when you did the Factory Reset.

Eventhough I enable that i dont get my apps automatically. Also problem is it syncs my google contacts. for me its a pain because my contacts in google are not really sorted so i had to always delete the contacts after sync then resync with Kies. this is kind of pain

Can you please check that under Settings- Privacy- Back up my data option is ticked or not?
A good alternative application is My Backup Pro.

Yes the options are ticked. I will check the app you have mentioned. thank you

[Q]Can you change Gmail primary account without hard reset?

I think the title says it all.Btw,my phone isn't rooted.
even with root access I'm not aware of any way to do this without essentially factory resetting.
A quick google of "how to change primary google account on android" led to a few suggestions of wiping the data for all the google apps on the phone, but that would wipe all apps/emails/contacts with gmail/ etc. and many people are saying that it just factory resets after that anyway.
Isn't it just doing:-
1) Settings
2) Accounts and sync
3) Click on existing Google account under "Manage accounts"
4) Click "Remove Account" button
5) Add the new one you'd rather use.
I've not done this myself as I have the one on my phone that I use but it seems like the right place. Are there issues if this route is used?
that seems the best and fastest way but it wipes all your data.I saw another method of changing the primary email but it involves a so-called ,,google apps'' app found in manage applications and selecting ,,clear data'' but so far i couldn't find it and i believe this issue is general to all gingerbread phones
It worked for me
nice CarpathianUK I never even knew you could do that...

??? What do you mean? It doesn't wipe ALL of your data. It wipes your contact/calendar info... because that stuff is tied to your google account. It doesn't wipe your installed apps. CarpathianUK's suggestion does exactly what you are asking about.
If you want to keep your contact info, you'll have to either copy them to your SIM card (they may be there already), or re-enter them in your contact list of the google account you want to use as your primary. I think for calendar info, you have to export your google calendar from the account you're using now, and import it to the account you want to use.
As far as the "so-called google apps" app - that isn't an app that shows up in "manage applications", per se. The Google apps is .apk that installs the market and other proprietary Google apps, like the gmail app. It exists because some ROMs (like CyanogenMod) cannot legally distribute the Google apps as part of their ROM, so they must link to the .apk externally to allow users to install them.
How to change primary account in android without resetting
Worked for android 4.2.2
1. Go to settings > Applications
2. Delete all data for Gmail.
3. Force stop Gmail.
4. Got settings > accounts
5. Uncheck all Sync options
6. Remove that account!
7. Sign in to google with new account.
You're done!

[Q] How do I enable/restore calender again when disabling it deleted it?

I seem to have deleted my Google calender (or some part of it) from my android (specs below). I can’t seem to be able to restore it.
I had problems syncing a new calender and was trying to clear all cache etc in order to get it to sync. I went into Settings --> applications --> All --> ‘Calendar’ (I’ve always had two of those, so I took the one with data in it, the other always stands on 0.0B).
I cleared the data, force stopped it and then I pushed Disable. The button went from disable to enable and I restarted my phone thinking I could enable it after restart. After reboot the calendar had disappeared. Meaning: no icon in the ‘applications’ screen, when I go into the settings menu I only have one post named ‘calendar’ (the empty one). Calendar Storage still has content though and when I use widgets they seem to be able to access and sync to my main Google calender. When I use ‘month’ view I can see the different events I have in my calendar but I can’t edit anything from my phone. As soon as I try to actually access it I get the message ‘Unfortunately, TwLauncher has stopped’.
How do I restore, or enable the Calender again? I find it really disturbing that I don’t have a calender icon in ‘application’ anymore and that it seems to have completely disappeared.
I’ve tried clearing data, experimenting with the sync option and rebooting several times. I just can’t seem to get any results though. And I can't find it on play so I can't re-install it. Any insight on this?

First check via Google mail/calendar if u see ur appointments...
If u don't see it there, they wasn't saved it Google account and so just local, which u delete (no restore)
If u see them there, just delete and reactivate ur Google account on ur phone.

Might have worked had it been a sync problem only (my calendar is intact on the web). This however is a problem of the built-in calendar app disappearing. I removed the account and installed it again but the calendar did not appear.
I'm starting to think that factory reset is the only viable option.

Hmm but that's a bit much for just probs like this...
Hmm u checked the options in application > all > calendar and delete data again?
Then also checked if calendar sync is active (I think so but just an idea)
So last option before factory reset would be wiping the dalvik cache
If at all now luck... U can do it.
But would be really strange.
Much success ;-)

Lost Calendar Events
Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I have a similar issue/problem
I was syncing and unsyncing with my samsung to google calendars, then the next day I checked, I realized all my events disappeared.
I did not erase anything yet all my events were gone.
I did notice that something was occurring during the period that I lost my data.
I saw that my default Samsung browser on my smart phone went on a refresh loop on google home page. This was an issue on googles end and was resolved eventually.
This was one of google's problems. There would be an issue with google recognizing me logging on the google home page and gmail. This lasted for a week. I wonder if that caused my data to disappear?
There are a few links below describing what happened. I'm wondering if this is an issue with Google, samsung+google, or syncing in general.
if I can recover my lost events that would be great!
It seems like a lot of them has to do with smartphones syncing, which is what I did. Even if there isn’t a solution or a recovery for this, it would be great to at least get an understanding as to why this happened (so i can avoid it in the future). I am currently storing everything local to my phone and havne’t experienced any loss of information. It’s quite disconcerting that if I did use google calendars, at any moment, all my events can go missing.

Restore a recent backup, that way the period of events lost will be minimal; only events entered/altered after the time of the backup, obviously (and you can then sync to Google if you like to bring that back up to date).
So far as recovering your lost events goes, I doubt Google will restore an individuals calendar events. Tho you might as well ask them, they might surprise you. That way you then simply restore them to your phone.
Failing that, unless you've got a copy of the db file containing the calendar events still on the phone, can't see how you'd get them back unfortunately.
As to why, I'd be asking Google. I've been keeping my phone/Google calendar synced a couple of times a day over the year and a bit I've had my SGS2 & never had a problem from their end (a couple very early doors caused by me when I had to reset my phone & I hadn't synced to Google before doing the reset).
Thanks Mistah. Unfortunately I didnt make any backups with TiBu or a nandroid at that time.
I've asked google and you are correct, they dont do event restores.
Yes definitely my main concern is why it happened at all? So it never happened to you?....hmmm..
im wondering if it was something on Google's part or something I did.
Before I realized my calendar disappeared, I unsynched and erased the profile on my device so it only had the local calendar, then i synced again.
I wonder if my erasing that profile on my samsung caused the calendar to delete. Or maybe it didn't register or save?
I can't 100% recall if I saved the events on google's calendar or my local. but if I stored on my local, shouldnt the data still be there even after my sync and unsync or google calendar?

Yep. If you remove the Google a/c from your phone completely, it deletes the events attached to that Google a/c in the calendar app. When you add it back, you'll have an empty calendar until you sync it from Google.
So essentially, what's seemed to have happened is you've done that with the a/c on your phone, for whatever reason your events @ Google's end have been nuked, so when you've re-added the a/c back on your phone & gone to sync it, there's been nothing there to sync back to the phone.
If you untick 'show [email protected]' in the calendar app settings (as opposed to removing the a/c outright), exit the app & restart the app you end up with an empty calendar, because it must have a Google a/c linked. If you retick 'show [email protected]' your events show again because simply unticking it doesn't delete anything.
Removing the a/c outright from the phone must purge the DB file(s) (?? I presume) on the phone.
That's the most logical explanation I can come up with given what happened/the order it happened in with your phone.

I just tried it again. I removed the account from my phone. then resynced it. All the info from the calendar is still there.
Currently i store everything locally and only view local calendar (as you've said, untick google calendar).
Also not sure if this matters, I'm not using google calendars, I'm using samsung's stock calendar planner.
I cant see how removing the account from ur handheld would erase all events from your calendar. Isn't removing the account just deciding not to sync with it?

That's why I added (?? I presume) to that line in my PP about removing the account potentially wiping the DB files.
I doubt you'll end up finding out what happened/why it happened.
Anyhow, that's all I can offer.

ya, it was worth a shot to test out that theory.
back to square one i guess.
google is blaming on samsung's app causing the erase when syncing.

[Q] how to launch manually an app?

Hi,
I stupidely cleaned some Android's apps cache and I forced them to close; but I lost my contacts and it seems that I can't get mails (maybe some settings have been erased). Anybody has an idea to restart these app, even without widget?
Thanks by avance for your answer.
Regards
Just launch that app in app drawer or reboot
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
have you tried a reboot? usually starts services again.
if not a reboot do you have titanium backups of the apps data? try restore them.
hope it helps!
thanks for your answers, but the reboot did not helped; the following apps are still dead (impossible to click on "force to stop" button):
com.samsung.app.playerready
com.samsung.InputEventApp
com.sec.android.app.lcdtest
Erreur
EncryptApp
etc.
and for example:
com.sec.android.daemonapp
crashNotifier
DataCreate
etc.
has the button "force to stop" ok, but with 0 in App and data, meanning that it's certainly not running.
I lost all my contacts and phone numbers, I still have the sms but without any link with any contact, all disappeared...
Apparently other apps kept their settings.
How stupid am I!
Any new idea will be the wellcome to recover the contacts and phones numbers (+900), I tried to re synchronize with android-sync, and nothing happened.
are your contacts not backed up to google servers? i always keep mine there. either way download supernbackup, see if you can save your contacts and sms. then i would restore a previous backup!
EDIT via nandroid btw
Factory reset will restore apps but not data.
Question = Q&A .
jje
thanks all for your answers; no backup, all data are in Outlook, that's not the biggest problem: when all the other apps still get their own settings and run well (IP camera, ChecmarkCaledrier, etc.), the contacts are not synchronized and I don't know where it's located by the app (named DW Dialer, payed version) to check if the data are effectively lost or if it's just the link to the data..
to Emofishcake: what do you mean by "edit via nandroid by the way"?

oh i meant EDIT: (as in i edited my post) and then restore backup from nandroid (not titanium backup) lol
Well, that's really odd: I still have my sms, all my calls history, all the categories/groups I created under DW Dialer for my contacts, but not the favoris, and not any contact even if I can see the name of the contacts I imported or created before even if I click on the contact button.... Impossible to make any synchronization between my Outlook PC and my S2..
Hi, all,
I recovered all my contacts!!! After many trials of many different kinds, I found that the settings of the Android Sync have been modified: I put again the righ tsetting (from where to where, etc.), and everything went back right! Many thanks for your help anyway, and the moral philosophy is that you must never clean the cache of apps you don't know what they are designed for!
Regards
Well-well-well... I recovered all my contacts because I changed the setting from Outlook to Outlook by default in the Android Sync settings; it means that actually I put all my Outlook contacts into my S2, but I still have lost the Android ones: and it's still impossible to stop Android Sync with the button "force to stop" in Application/manage your services, meanning that the app is still down.
I kept the categories I created, but they are now affected to the google account, not to the android sync account; impossible to reactivate the android sync account. This drives me crazy!

I TiBu-froze "Motorola Services" and lost my phone contacts.

Background: I noticed that Motorola Services was eating a bunch of my battery, so I froze it with TiBu. Blur account disappeared, taking with it my phone contacts (not Gmail or Corporate Sync).
- Thawed the program, still gone.
- Wiped cache, still gone.
- Used Mybackup Root to restore all of my contacts (Gmail, Corporate, Moto services), which involves overwriting the old ones: nope. The contact app doesn't see the phone contacts thru Moto Services because it doesn't see my blur account.
Funny story: Airdroid still sees the phone contacts. They're hiding somewhere. Just not showing up in the contacts app, and I can't seem to download the contact list to my computer.
Does anyone have any ideas before I do a factory reset? I don't flash new roms often for a reason: setting everything back up is a PAIN, dammit.
Contacts > menu > display options
Make sure groups are selected to be displayed by selecting accounts, e.g. Google to expand it and ensure there are checks in groups you want to show up.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Yeah, the problem is I've been storing phone contacts under my Blur account which is what went missing thanks to me screwing around. The only groups available to check are my Gmail and work email, both of which were added by me after the initial setup procedure (and don't have phone numbers associated).
I did some more searching and it looks like others ran into the same problem, which isn't fixed by "thawing" the app. And, it looks like the only solution involves a factory reset. Maybe I'll upgrade my rom version while I'm at it... ah well.

[Q] Google's cloud backup. How to access those files?

Is there a way to access the files (and eventually delete them) that google stores in their servers?
Namely passwords and apps.
Thanks
Anyone has an idea?
never done a cloud backup. but i think it should only backup your contacts, sms and all google app data.
how to access: go to settings -> accounts -> add your gmail account which you backed up on. And when you sign in, it will ask to sync everything just hit OK.
Thats the only way i've backed up my phone. But theres also google drive which is totally another form of back ups

I mean, how to access it from my computer's browser (maybe some option in gmail?), not the phone.
(well, it could be from the phone browser as well... but you get my point)
I want to know exactly what they have there, and eventually be able to delete what I don't want to be on the cloud.
