isn't it against the rules to post these links? If not, thanks anyways.

And, the site infected a PC of mine with fake security software. Pretty sad, actually. First time I've ever gotten infected by anything in over 25 years.

lol, demonoid infected your PC? ..I've been going there for years man,you may want to look for another source of your infection

I wish it were so simple, but either their site did it, or the torrent link did. It launched Java and ran that crap malware. Since I never use that machine, it's not possible that there was anything else. The only pages I visited with it in months were this morning, and then only XDA and that link, along with clicking one of the 3D files. Nothing else.

Demonoid is clean for the most part. I think it's user error. You accept those risks and should know how to prevent them before even using those sites.

Considering I clean machines for people regularly, I don't believe I am your casual, ignorant user. This machine used to not even have any virus protection on it, back when I used it for torrents constantly as few years ago. Never any problems. Now it does have anti-virus, even though I rarely download a torrent.
I was actually glad to know how this stuff gets on users' PCs, since I've never seen it happen, before. I used to suspect Flash, but now I know it is Java, since the Java bubble appeared right before it happened.
Of course, I am on that machine right now, and it is clean, again. No permanent harm done. And, of course I am aware of the risks. That's why this machine is never used for anything important or even has any critical data on it.

Yep, that's why this machine began life with an immediate Linux install. Unfortunately, at the time, I ran into too many conflicts. I definitely should revisit it, though!

[Q] Antivirus, thoughts and opinions

I'm curious how many actually use an antivirus on there phone and if so which and why I've used lookout and anti-virus free but I'm looking for a battery efficient app that actually does its job properly all the time thanks for any input
My opinion, they're generally worthless, battery killing, problem causing programs.
The only good thing about lookout is the lost phone feature, which can be done with far better apps that are designed just for that.

Seriously. No anti virus will protect you from everything. And I think it is worthless for phones at this time.
Awesome info and since getting the dx2 I haven't had one or felt the need on my fassy I tried others and never felt like it was doing me any good so I was curious I don't feel the need for one other then outside/3rd party apps is there a safe way to work threw those type of apps thanks
The best thing you can do for security is make sure you don't have any networks stored as netgear or linksys because if it finds that network in a public place it will connect to it and someone can packet sniff your passwords
If you are going to connect to a wireless network in an airport, always ask someone what network is the airports, people can set up laptops or cell phones for the purpose of tricking people to connect to them so they can packet sniff you

Running a mobile phone with android without anti-virus protection is asking for trouble. Would you run your home machine without it? Android malware has picked up 300% in the last 4-5 months with rootkits and all sorts of nasty things coming down the pipe. Here is a site with some of the more recent stuff listed for androids: http://community.ca.com/blogs/securityadvisor/default.aspx
I've ran lookout, avg, and kaspersky mobile so far and have had 2 instances where lookout and kaspersky reported issues with software upon installing.
A rundown of what's out there and some reviews of them would be wonderful but I haven't come across a site with it yet. If someone else has please chime in...
On my windows machine i have one, on my linux system i don't,, on my android (linux) phone? Not a chance, make sure your permissions are alright, use your head keep a nandroid backup and you don't have to worry
Oh and on your link there the only "scary" thing said specifically that it was for windows based systems

You're seriously naive and have no clue about being security conscious in this day and age.
Google took down a ton of applications from its own appstore because of being infected with malware and then some more later on that contained a rootkit. Did any of those application fit your definition of "shady"?
The world as we know it is not a rosy place to shrug off protecting your investments and hard earned cash. If you chose to be that way then so be it but giving bad advice is not smart.
P.S. I have some swamp land in Florida I'll sell you CHEAP so send me some $$ to my payal account and I can forward you over the details after payment is made.

I highly recommend LBE Privacy Guard as an extremely useful security tool. It will classify your installed apps in three categories, Untrusted, Trusted, and System. Any app you are unsure of you keep its default Untrusted status, and you can edit it's custom profile to disable any privileges you see fit. Just got a Cartwheel counter app you are unsure of and it requires internet and identity info to install? You simply edit the LBE profile after installing to disable the app's access to internet, etc. Any time an untrusted app tries to use a permission a simple pop-up appears with an allow/disallow. This action can also be set as default for every time the app calls on this function. Very robust, highly recommended, and COMPLETELY FREE.
That said it might not do anything to protect from the more advanced malware that might be out there, but is a great defense for the more simple ones.
Just no. Seriously.

That is wrong. There is malware for android because it has become so popular, and it is designed to be simple but it gives the apps more control.
Honestly, I used to use one but since I read ratings and am stingy about what I install, I figure I am fine.
When they say "malware", its referring to apps that steal your personal info. So like I said there before, no viruses for linux base products.

Hate to disagree with you but the proper definition of malware is:
mal·ware/ˈmalˌwe(ə)r/
Noun: Software that is intended to damage or disable computers and computer systems.
Now, there most definetely is malware for android. You just have to be conscientious of what you install.

Amazon Test Drive

This may be a bone head old news post, but it's something I just noticed. I usually check for the free amazon app on my phone each morning but forgot to this morning so I checked online. This is when I noticed a "Test Drive" button as pictured below. My drive isn't available yet. The funny thing is that I was interviewing with Dropbox a few weeks ago when this was rumored. During the second interview they asked "what feature do you think could completely revolutionize Dropbox?" my answer was the ability to store media and stream it to your devices, they said it was a good idea but would probably create problems with the DMCA/MPAA/RIAA/any other four letter asshole groups or laws. I just saw on G+ today that someone mentioned this was a feature and when I asked them about it they confirmed it worked!
I have a feeling that once this matures, Dropbox is going to lose a fair amount of users.
Have you guys seen the verge article? Basically, they could possibly use, modify, and profit from what you store in the gdrive. I went ahead and downloaded it, and it works pretty well. Just got mine activated today, it's neat, but nothing mind-blowing yet. The only thing that is awesome right now is if you upload a video to your drive you can watch it on a mobile device.

There's a little trick to "forcing" activation. If you have 2 google accounts on your phone, download the app and keep switching between accounts in the app and it will activate. Did it yesterday and it worked. I now have 2 active accounts 10 minutes after signup.
not really liking drive though..or the app I should say. Lacks image thumbnails and can't create folders. To view an image it takes time to open where dropbox is almost instant and you can swipe to next pic just like in gallery. IMO, dropbox is still the winner. But I'm sure its only time till those issues are addressed.

FBI says not to root to avoid malware. Should I be concerned?

Saw this article today on BGR about Android security.
http://www.bgr.com/2012/10/15/android-security-fbi-malware-warning/
I understand about using safe apps and will probably try and Anti-Virus software. I love using ROMs and the last part of the article caught my attention about rooting the phone.
Usually we root to install ROMs. Could there be malicious ROM makers who build ROM's that steal information? I know I am being paranoid but could some hacker build a ROM that secretly sent your information to a hidden server? Is there any way people can check if the ROM is safe?
I go on the threads to read about how fast it is, how little space it uses, the modifications, etc but I never read to check up on the safety of the ROM. I am not trying to accuse any ROM makers and I am grateful to the community for having the ability to change our phones. However this article got me thinking about it.
FBI says a lot of things.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
The 2 pieces of malware the FBI discovered are from phishing. One ad was for finding wealthy Asian males and the other for something else stupid.
Both require u to install an app on your phone as well. So, if your rooted u can install adaway and not worry about phishing ads in the first place. Second, if your dumb enough to click on ads u deserve a lil ass kicking.
Genius!
A rom maker could feasibly do some pretty bad things. In fact back in the day, when mui was first getting some attention, there were people who wouldn't run it and were convinced the rom was malware, just because it was something new and it was chinese. That of course turned out to false. As long as you know and trust the dev, you should be okay. Especially here on xda, what with the recognized titles, or other sites where a dev has built up a following. I might be a little wary of someone with a low post count and no title posting a rom, but still, the chances of a dev going rogue, and building a rom just to get you to run some piece of malware are pretty slim.
The reason they warn against rooting is more along the lines of preventing malicious apps from getting superuser access, in order to do things they shouldn't.

Using common sense when going to websites, viewing emails with links, or downloading and installing apps is the best way to stay safe..
All I need is for your phone to install apps from unknown sources and some clever java script. Doesn't matter if you're rooted or not
You don't need root to browse shady website, download warez and sideload them. I think Apple is paying the FBI.
Yeah I feel safer with Android, I know exactly what my phone is doing 98% of the time. Who knows what kind of 'skynet' stuff is going on behind the scenes at apple. There must be a reason that all of their equipment can only be used by their other equipment (no micro usb cable for instance)

Some guy in Germany or somewhere around there hijacked a bunch of iPhones using a built in remote feature for developers and charged everyone affected (I forgot how much) to release their phones. I believe they had to be jail broken but that still doesn't excuse allowing such a huge security flaw.
Yeah, I remember hearing about that awhile ago.
It's about like the never ending gun control issue. No matter how many people die from guns in "gun-free" zones, they still try to say that guns are dangerous and making a rule that only the good people will obey, and being forced to wait 45 minutes for a cop to show up, who often then shoots the wrong people when he does finally get there, somehow makes people safe from guns.
Being under your own control, and having everyone else under their own control, is always better than giving control over many to a few.
Most people are not bad, so even though it's true that some always are bad, and they will always be a problem, they are always the minority, and so as long as everyone has an equal footing, the bad guys can never win and they will always be a small problem, roughly equal to their percentage of the total population.
It's only when some relatively small group of power-holders convince everyone else to give up their equal footing, that the bad guys have a way to co-opt that unnatural imbalance and take advantage of it for themselves, allowing a few bad guys to harm everyone else.
Anyone who tries to remove fundamental control from you, either has an angle or is incompetent, no matter what good-sounding rationalizations they try to hide the truth in.
In other words, root is just, and the FBI trying to scare you away from root is unjust.

I just drove to New York yesterday to buy the TF701T and I must say that this version is like night and day compared to the TF700T. It is very snappy out of the box whereas the TF700T was sluggish and slow before I actually unlocked the boot loader and put cyanogenmod on it. For the TF701T, I will probably root it just for SU but I will probably keep the stock Rom because it is really smooth.

Agreed, I just received my TF701 from Amazon yesterday and right out of the box it blows my TF700 out of the water. Barely any slowdown while downloading and installing apps whereas the 700 would grind to a halt. Dock arriving today, hopefully Asus solved the dock battery draining issue as well. Root would be nice for apps like Titanium Backup but this is my first Android device - and I've owned a lot of them - that I might be happy with totally stock.

Mine is Rooted, with CWM Recovery. And it was actually a simple procedure.
I can tell you that before you even think about proceeding, you will need to have your device unlocked. That can be found at Asus's web site. In their download section, I'm sure.
Next, you'll need to make sure that your PC/Laptop can see your device. My Win7 setup saw it already as a "K00C", or some such thing, but if yours doesn't, then get the "Sync" util from Asus and install it on your PC. It'll install the drivers with it. But then go back and uninstall the Sync util. The drivers will be left on your system.
Before connecting your device, make sure to disable all Anti-Virus, Anti-Mal/Spyware from any and all Real Time scanning. Also completely disable any and all firewalls you have installed. If you haven't installed any, then guess what? Windows Firewall is still running, so disable it!
You will also need to use a USB 2.0 and not 3.0 port on your computer to connect your device to. Why? I don't know man, just do it!
Do NOT connect your device yet! You're just getting ready here!
Next you'll need the little mini ADB &FastBoot setup. You're going to have to use that to do it (it's in the video where to get it and how to use it). If he doesn't tell you where to get it from in the video, then I think this guy has a link to it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516215
Heck, maybe that's where I got it from. I just remember that it's the "mini" version. The "just needed stuff" one.
Then go and watch the video in the link below. It's too wordy and doesn't even tell you what web sites he's looking at, so really, who cares what Josh would do (you'll get that later)?
In fact, maybe I got tired of the video and just found the guys page that I linked to above and followed that and that's where the "who cares what Josh would do" joke sticks in my head. That does sound more logical. <lol>
Either way, read through this and try that guys page, or the video first. I do know that by doing what I said in this message and using one of those two sources, you WILL get Rooted! That's a FACT! I'm sorry about this. It's just that it's been a couple of weeks since I did it and I didn't write it all down like I should have.
But here's the web sites he's looking at in the video (have them already open before starting the video):
CWM Page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621051
CWM File: http://droidbasement.com/asus/tf701t/recovery/
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IBN1YkBp3g
Now there's stuff I'm missing in here. I probably didn't bookmark everything, but whatever I missed here, was in the video, so don't worry.
Note: Someone mentioned somewhere about keeping Recovery intact when installing a ROM, or a reset, etc.. CWM has a setting for that. It keeps the recovery intact through that stuff. I remember it kept staying on me one time when I wanted to go back to factory to sell the device and then I went into the settings and saw that one, which is enabled by default, so don't worry about that anymore.
One thing; It says in the video that you have to be at JB 4.3 first. That's correct, so update. There is one available through your device's "Software Update" thingy.
One thing that is incorrect, is when he says; "You must be at such and such version of this thing" (whatever it was), which is related to your version of JB 4.3. Yours won't be. Now yer scared, uh?
Don't worry about that. It's not true! It'll work just fine! Mine did. That was probably just what the version was when they developed this thing and so they're playing it safe. I don't blame them, but how can anyone know that it "must" be, when newer versions of JB 4.3 (huh?) hadn't come out yet. No need to scare people. Just say as far as you know.... but who knows for future revisions of the OS, right?
Anyway, this'll get ya through it, if you can deal with Josh's wordiness. Just be patient, he gets there. But you do have to take some of what he says with a grain of salt, like any of what you watch/read. My rule as a tech is, if it doesn't make sense, then it's probably wrong.
Hope this helps. And you didn't have to "Read! Read! Read!". That never gets you anywhere. You just end up reading a bunch of threads full of messages by people looking for help and others responding by telling them to read. And if you're lucky, you always end up at that one post that actually has the help you need. So why not just point people there in the first place? When that doesn't happen, XDA and other sites just end up cluttered with threads that delay people from getting help, instead of pointing them to help, which is what they were looking for in the first place, right?
Don't get me wrong, I love to read! And I encourage everyone to do the same! I'm just saying, with all due respect, reading a bunch of threads full of nothing but pleas for help and "read, read, read", is not learning. It's just noise. Unnecessary static. And threads with 70 pages of that doesn't help anyone, now does it?
I'm no saint, but this is my only post in this thread. And now there won't be 100 more messages containing "Help!!!" and "Read! Read! Read!".
The heck with that! I just want my device Rooted now! Hahaha!
If I forgot anything in here, just lemme know. I'll try to find it again. Or maybe I have the file. If you don't hear back from me, just PM me or something. I'm not on here all that much, but that will send me an alert or something, I'm sure. I think? Oh well, try it.
The biggest thing is, just don't let your fear of bricking your device overwhelm you. I have to say, that even though I never used any of this stuff before (meaning ADB & FastBoot & "pushing") and I was quite nervous, it actually was, looking back at it, a really simple procedure! So use my hindsight to hammer down that fear and Root, my son, root! <lol>
