Every once and a while I'll check my speed test app to see what im getting for 3G download speed. Lately ive been getting over 1000 ping and like .1 mbps download. I went in and did a data profile reset and that fixed the problem. This has happened to me multiple times over the past couple of weeks.
Has this happened to anyone else? And if so, are devs going to fix this in their roms when the bootloader is unlocked?
Well, it's Sprint, so that's normal 3G speeds...
Move along folks, nothing to see here.
my 3g used to be fire!!! now it seems as if everybody has joined sprint and the network is hella saturated!!!!!!!

Depends on your location. If you check the Sprint forums, there are tons of people complaining about data speeds all over the country. There's certain areas in the Bronx where I have full 4G and only getting 0.50mbps down...it's crazy!
I would say do a ##3282# and make sure your EVDO is set to auto not CDMA. Menu>commit changes & reboot. Update PRL then profile. I guess you've done that?
i was told that for the last month and a half it was because of thunderstorms. i asked him since there are just a few towers between the 44 miles i drive to work, how did all those storms only hit sprint's antennae and not verizon's that are on the same towers?
i talked to a gm at the sprint store last night and he said they're having major data issues and there's no time frame of when they'll ever be fixed. just outside that sprint store i have full 5 bars on 3g and only get 100kb/s. i made sure i was outside of the sprint store's range just in case they had a 3g airave.
they did fix the slow data in my city and most of the areas where i drive to work. now min of 600Kb/s and up to 1.8Mb/s
I find Sprint's network getting worse and worse...they're loading it up with new customers enticed by high end smartphones, but they're not boosting the capacity to match their growth. What scares me is, how much lower is it going to go? :/
Around here I get about 75-200kbps down. It can go to less than 40kbps during lunchtime.

they will let it go pretty far. currently the tower that services my house will be so overloaded during the evening hours that speeds are 0-5k. last night between 7-11pm 3g was unuseable and 4g was zooming at 20k.
ive had dates of april 30th, may 30th, june 30th, and now july 30th as dates when the towers were to be upgraded. i honestly think they just throw dates around so they can get you off the phone.
Same here. During peak hours data is unusable without a wifi connection. I called so many times to put service tickets on the local towers. It's so fustrating. Everytime I call I'm on the phone for like 40mins tell them it's not my phone, it's a network issue. They just don't get it. BTW does anyone have the number for advanced sprint tech support? I'm going to keep calling until they fix the issue.
This is what bugs me so much paying the $10 Premium data Fee. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying the fee if I actually get premium data, but 100kbs down is not premium data. Something has to be done. What the hell are theying doing with that fee? They certainly aren't putting it back into their network. I hope Sprint doesn't get the Iphone because it will only get worse.
You're not in 3G. Your in 1x when you get those speeds. The Display will always say 3G even when switch to 1x.
Once rooted, that can be fixed to reflect what you are really on.

Welcome to Sprint the Nation Wide slowest 3G available.
Welcome to Sprint-The (hope you dont need to download that)Now Network
First, try this:

[MOD] Data Latency (Slow Data) Fix
And second, it is not unusual. I have tried to play online games(BFBC2 etc.) via Wi-Fi hotspot. With poor success. Reasons for this is poor connection(long range to Cell-towers) network overcapacity etc. etc.
Shutting phone's Ciphering should raise U/D speed as above thread say, but I guess that there is not any mindblowing way to fix it. Updating radios would help but.

I said it once and I'll say it again Location, Location, Location. I am Cali bay area(Currently in Lafayette, CA) and my Evo 4G just ran 962k down and 656k up 187 ping. Evo 3d same time test ran 164 ping 1038k down and 609k up. Now at my house in El Sobrante, CA about 15 minutes away I would not come close to touching that speed. Usually around 50k or worse. One thing is I never rely on 3g to do anything for me. I have wifi at home and work and at times 4g. If I am in 3g only location I do not expect to get anything important done.
Edit: Keep in mind I also did the speed fix on both phones. Have to have msl for that.
Here are a couple images for you one is my Verizon 3G Xoom and the other my EVO 3D. Lets face it Sprint speed sucks.

Im gonna guess the people that get these good speeds are in sparse areas or areas with few sprint customers. I've been complaining about Sprint speeds since October of last year and its only getting worse and worse. I can remember constant speeds of 1.2-1.8 megs down and now im doing good just to get 250kb/s. The 4G has fallen off quite a bit too.

Actually I'm not 1x. I have a few programs to tell me what network I'm on and I'm definetly getting those speeds on EVDO Rev A. You can use Battery Monitor and go to "Tests" and it will tell you what network you are using or you can use Open Signal and go to maps and it will also tell you. I'm definetly getting these speeds on 3G (EVDO Rev A) Not 1x!
I read a lot of people were claiming much better data reception with the Photon over their old phone, so I thought I'd put it to the test. My old phone was an Evo4G and I still have one in the house in use (completely stock running Android 2.3), so I did a side-by-side comparison test to the Photon and this is what I got using SpeedTest.net:
Tests on 3G network
Evo4G: 279kbps/157kbps/1026ms (download/upload/ping)
Photon4G: 401kbps/211kbps/ 793ms (download/upload/ping)
Results: Photon was 44% faster on download, 34% faster on upload and 23% faster ping
Tests on 4G network
Evo4G: 3203kbps/188kbps/357ms (download/upload/ping)
Photon4G: 6454kbps/563kbps/274ms (download/upload/ping)
Results: Photon was 101% faster on download, 199% faster on upload and 23% faster ping
It is also important to note that the Evo had a lot of trouble running the test in 3G because the signal was so weak. For each good test it took about 10 tries while the Photon had no problems and I never had to retry a test in 3G on the Photon. Results shown are the average of the fastest 8 runs out of 10. This is except for the Evo 3G runs which were the average of only 6 runs because of the difficulty I had getting it to run at all on 3G. Thus, the 3G runs are biased towards the Evo since I removed more than two very slow runs and the differences on 3G may be understated (Evo may be slower than I am reporting on 3G).
Conclusion: Data Reception Rocks on the Photon4G!
This is what I've seen in numerous reviews and although I can't get a hold of one myself yet to do my own testing against my aging Epic, customers have been complaining of reception issues. Any word on others who might be experiencing this issue around you? It might just be a bad batch received.

You misread the data. The Photon is much faster than the Evo4G. The higher the uploading and downloading numbers, the faster the data transfer. The smaller the ping number, the faster the data transfer. The Photon was faster in all measurements.
I will confirm AGAIN that the Motorola Photon absolutely has much better signal strength and faster, more stable data connection on 3G and 4G. This is the main reason I choose to keep it and put my EVO 3D back in the box and in my bottom drawer.
Wow that's impressive! How can anybody argue with that, being you have tested with all those different phones? Good to know. Thanks.
PS: Shhhh.... keep it on the DL!!! Let's hope Sprint doesn't get wind of this awesome reception or they will probably pull a Verizon and cripple the hell out of it so it barely works. Then we're all back to craptastic again.
I have to disagree with you about the Photon's reception 'cause mine SUCKS. I tried updating my profile and it didn't help. I tried updating my PRL several times and each time I got an error. I even tried going to a different part of the hous to update my PRL and it still failed with an error.
I can't even get this phone to connect to the market! Everytime I try I either get a timed out message or a no connection message.
And to add insult to injury it won't let me do a factory reset ( so I can return this piece f junk) until the battery is at 25%. The stupid thing has been on the charger for at least 45 minutes and it won't go past 20%.
On the positive side the voice connection seeems to work just fine. But I didn't get this to be a voice only phone I got it because every review I read said that it had fantastic data reception.

Even worse on Epic = Photon Reception is *****in
But before you pay the ETF maybe you should just go grab a t-mo phone on contract for a day or two, see if the signal works for you, if it does then drop sprint and have your number ported to Tmo. This could save you the ETF if TMo isn't any better.
Depending on your area, TMos network signal will probably be stronger since they are GSM - takes less antenna to cover area with GSM than CDMA.

I did two factory resets & it didn't make any difference.
I might try another Photon. I called Sprint about my EVO 4g's reception problems & they were able to get it working again.
I don't know why I didn't think to try that with the Photon. That was a very nice phone
Or maybe I'll crawl back to Verizon. Verizon just installed a new tower by me in august and they have 4G in my area.
Can anyone atest to this? There's a thread on a another forum about this. People are saying that the Focus S has twice the speed on the network (non-Wi-Fi) than the Titan.
http://forums.wpcentral.com/titan/184114.htm
Check your speed here:
http://mobilespeedtest.net
I noticed this inthe ATT store, when I was checking out the Titan and Focus S.They were side by side, every page loaded much faster on the Focus S. I even asked if there was a way to change the settings on the Titan because I had a feeling ATT would do this. They did it for the Focus. I was lose connection all the time until I turn my speed up.
I was checking reviews and specs, and the speeds of the Focus S are faster than on the Titan. Whether this is from AT&T dicking around, or from the radios inside the hardware, or some other factor, idk. I have yet to have an issue with it though, and the speed difference is not that noticeable in my opinion.
Has anyone actually tried to contact AT&T or HTC regarding this? The Titan has
850/900/2100 MHz bands while the Focus S has 850/1900/2100 if that matters.
Contacted At&t about data speeds, both cellular and wi-fi.
The I got pushed through to a senior engineer who took my information and reset the provisions on my phone. Speeds increased quite a bit, between 3g and 4g speeds. Big difference from the sub 3g speeds I was getting. Also websites aren't timing out like before.
Wi-fi still hasn't improved for still around 14-17Mb downloads compared to 22-24Mb download speeds on my Iphone.
The engineers final resolution was to keep an eye on my 30 day return policy and recommended I go with a real LTE device.
What did he do to provision your settings?
The AT&T Titan is also 850/1900/2100.

Ok I will bite, how slow is your 3G? Even if your 3G is very slow it is still highly unlikely that you would get 1xrtt that is faster than your 3G speed. 1xrtt is very slow. It peaks just shy of 20Kb/s, but real world speeds are likely to be more like 7.5-13Kb/s.
If you are unhappy with your 3G speed you could setup one of the custom PRLs to allow you to roam on Verizon's 3G towers. They are way better, and way faster than sprint in nearly every region.

In my area my 3g speeds is about 5 kB/s. 1x is definitely faster.
One option is to use wifi at your house as I am sure 95% of home ISPs are much faster than 1x and possibly 3g.
Outside of your house you may want to use 1x or the Verizon prls but be careful, you roam too much and Sprint will cancel your line(s).
I think I might take DJ's angle on this... there are rare occasions where I have the weakest signal available too and 3g just won't do anything. Nothing will load, yet it acts as if there is signal. I wouldn't mind seeing if 1x would do something in these instances - would be better than being at a stand-still.
However, flipping this around... I have noticed that when I do get bumped to 1x while I'm doing something on the web (streaming music, navigation, etc), it stays in 1x until I'm done using data - even in areas I know I normally would get strong 3g speeds. Is this just a limitation where switching or even scanning for 3g would drop whatever data stream there is and not be able to pick up where it is or just have to restart?
You guys having 3G speeds that are as slow as you describe are likely not experiencing slow 3G, but actually only connected to 1xrtt. Sprint for some reason has the ability to tell our phones they are connected to 3G, but if you run a diagnostic it will tell you that you are in fact connected to 1rxtt not evdo-a. So apparently they can spoof the 3G icon to show up. Total BS. So that honestly sounds like what is happening.

False, unless you're referencing kilobytes and not kilobits, in which case when you refer to kilobytes, you capitalize the B. Uppercase B = byte, lowercase b = bit. Real world 1xRTT bandwidth should peak around 140ish kbps (averages probably below 100). I've seen 80+ myself a number of times. The important thing to keep in mind about 1xRTT is you don't even have to fully saturate your bandwidth before the latency skyrockets.
However, I will agree that even if your 3G is slow, it's still probably faster and more responsive than a good 1xRTT signal.

Had I provided the link or the method to do it there would have been a disclaimer about that possibility for my own liability. However as these people all signed contracts they would know that already. Unless you are an idiot and don't read every last bit of every term and condition before signing, or don't understand what you read. Now if that is the case they have far more problems than any trouble I could get them into. I would be courteous and issue a reminder before providing the method, but as far as you trying to shift responsibility on to me, I think it is a load of horse ****. No person has any business signing a contract they haven't read or haven't understood. So "my bad advice" from your perspective is really a moot point. That's great that you don't agree with the method, you have your reasons I'm sure, but I personally have unlimited roaming, that's something I pay for. I've read my contract and I stay within the confines of those terms. If these people read their's I'm sure they will too.

I was getting consistently under 50 on speed tests in the auditorium I was in. It was 3g from the speed tests and the rooted phone next to me. I have a Verizon Orlando 11115 but i can't force roam I tried to buy roam control but its not in the market I have the app but no license. I see 1x around 100-120 a lot so I was thinking that would be a lot more usable than 19. I was just wondering if there is a way to turn off 3g but leave on mobile data which would be the 1x.

Everyone knew or should of known before getting the phone that lte was not up yet and you would be on the 3G network.
If your sales person didn't tell you this then I would take it up with your salesperson. If you bought the phone online then sorry about your luck, lesson learned. ( Hopefully )
Either way don't knock Sprint for something they have made clear. It was never stated to have 4G WiMax. Only 3G and lte when available.

I completely knew what I was getting. However, I did not expect slower 3G than I had with the OF EVO. Nor .MMS that don't download. LTE will be here soon but I'd like just a but of utility out of 3G...

BE PATIENT. Sprint is in the process of improving their entire network. You may not see the improvements yet, but trust me they are working on it.
I live in Aurora, CO and there are two towers here that are as opposite as night and day. One is totally bogged down and speeds are 200 kbps Down and 200 kbps Up with 400 ping. About 3 miles away, another tower gives me 1200 kbps down and 800 kbps up with 100 ping.
They are working on it, just have patience.

I've been patient with Sprint for over 12 years. I get that it is coming. The point is 3G is worse now than it was with the OG. And this is with new towers on 3G in the area. Simply pathetic especially considering I work and live next to a major international airport and large technology corridor.

That's what I don't get. I have read how people are doing better yet I'm about as bad as it can get in almost every area I try.

You could always call the Sprint direct customer service line, 877-775-4886, and make a formal complaint about said speeds. See if they can give you some freebies if not some information regarding the Network Vision roll-out in your local area. Who knows, they might throw in some credit or something.

That might be my best bet. I was cool with 3G on the OG - hardly ever used WiMax since it was so spotty. I am simply at a loss for how this is playing out when everyone else seems to be having much better luck.
My 3g speeds are about the same as they were on my og evo, and most of the time they suck. The part that really sucks for me is that I might notice that my speeds are really slow and run a speed test, and confirm it, then an hour, or day later, the speed might be flying.
As an example, I just ran a speed test because it seemed slow, I got 203 kbps down and 506 kbps up. Yesterday I noticed it seemed faster than normal, so I did a speed test from my desk at work, the same location as the test I just did today. I got 2389 kbps down and 925 kbps up, by far the fastest I have ever seen it here.
At home I rarely see speeds over 100 kbps, yet just the other day I got about 1000 kbps down there. The bottom line for me is, I wouldn't care if the speeds weren't great if they were just consistent. It sucks when I need to do something quick and the data connection is crawling, which is the case more often than not.
I had a problem right out of the box. My ping was over 800 and was getting under 100 down. Weird thing wad that up was at like 300. I had this problem with my 3# so I called sprint and asked for my msl. Enter ##72786#. Enter your msl and then go to menu reset. It will reactivate. My speeds went up to over 1000. Worth a shot for u guys. Interesting sidenote... When I called in the tech told me to power down the phone and remove the battery. I let him know that these phones don't have removable batteries. Amazing that some techs don't even know about their flagship devices...

I ran that and updated profile and PRL again and I see some improvement. Sprint acknowledged an outage but it sounds like it covers Baltimore, DC and VA which doesn't narrow much for me. It is also off peak hours so we'll see how it works tomorrow. Regardless, thanks for the code.
