New Netflix App - Nook Color Themes and Apps

Dont know if any one else has tried it but the new NetFlix app seems to work with out using the netflix fixer app here is here the link from androidpolice site if anyone else wants to give it a try.
http://www.multiupload.com/3A8C4GWL8R

Working for me! Thanks for the link.

Works great! No need for build.prop edits or any special apps.
No chipmunks, just smooth playback.

Did you have to root in order to use Netflix? Sorry if it sounds dumb but I'm thinking of buying one.

Not any more. I set my friend up with a SD bootable cm7 latest nightly and with the updated app it worked. No fast foreword audio or video, just pure goodness. His nook is a non rooted blue dot nook.

CM7 is rooted

Yes sorry it is a rooted rom, what I meant to say is that you do not have to root the stock nook itself if you run an SD bootable version. Unless the sd bootable roots the device in the process? I myself run off rooted emmc so SD bootables are a little foreign to me.

Thanks for the link.
Latest nightly C7 and it works well without the build mod.

Actually, it is not. Rooted means you have kept the stock ROM and simply opened it up so you can install the market and other apps not in the Nook app store. CM7 is a custom ROM that replaces the stock ROM. While the distinction may not sound important, it is if someone follows the wrong instructions when trying to return a Nook Color to stock form such as if they have a warranty issue.

Rooted means that you have root access to the OS.
"root is the conventional name of the user who has all rights or permissions."

I just installed CM7 to SD card, and then download the netflix app from here.
Works great!

I wonder why Netflix no longer shows up in the Market?

Really? CM7 isn't rooted? Wow. You're probably are one of the people who "bricked" a NC as well, eh?
Rooted (as joenathane says) means you can do w/e the hell you want to the OS (super-user/administrator rights). CM7 (and nearly all after markets roms) are rooted.

Thanks for the link. Working great on Phiremod MIUI.

No need for sarcasm. What I meant was when you follow the instructions for rooting your Nook Color you are really keeping the stock ROM and opening it up. When you install CM7 you are replacing the stock ROM with a custom ROM. Yes, it is still rooted but it is not the stock ROM. The instructions for doing and undoing this are different depending on which way you go and I did not want people to be confused if they try to undo what they previously did.
And no, I have note bricked mine. You can't brick a NC since you can always boot from a SD card. You can get it to the point where many would give up, but you cannot brick it.

Hehe...just making sure you know what's up

This is a noob question. I probably should know the answer, but I don't.
I downloaded the apk file. Where on the SD card do I put it to get it to run?
I know how to get to the root menu and/or to connect the Nook via USB. I have heard about "pushing" an app to the device, but I don't know how to do it.
Thanks.
PS. I also bought a copy of Root Explorer.

I simply downloaded the file using the nook browser, then tapped on the download to install it (the notification window at the bottom).

Before I ROM it

I want to back-up some things--mainly the wife's angry birds stats. Trouble is that every post I read talks about loading things using the market after the tablet is ROMmed.
I've tried putting superuser on manually but it doesn't seem to recognize root explorer. All this after following the root instructions found here.
Angrybirds backup, superuser ... is not available in the gtab market (hadango) found on the device when stock. AppBrain doesn't seem to have any way to get the appbrain app onto the tablet.
I need advice on how to get apps on the tablet or to get superuser to recognize root explorer, or perhaps just how to get angrybirds backed up.
I use titanium backup or mybackup root!

Respectfully, what you use isn't the question really. If I can't get superuser to work with it then I'm still stuck.
So to restate here, I need a way to get these apps onto the tab before its rommed, or to make superuser to work.
honestly, I thought my wife would freak when I lost all of her angry birds saves, but she said it was "fun" to have to do it all again.
For superuser:
Install ES File Explorer from market
Use ES to install Z4root from xda
Run Z4root to root tab
Test root using Root Explorer
For backup:
Install Titanium
Perform backup of User Apps
Flash ROM
Install Titanium
Restore User Apps backups

You can trust the link. Lots of good info there.
If you are on a stock rom, you are not rooted (unless have you used something like Z4 to root it). All custom roms are already rooted for you. Anytime you nvflash back to stock you will not be rooted.

Well I remember looking for an answer to root and finding several places saying that I would have root after following those instructions. I guess I let my experience with rooting got in the way of understanding. That or nobody thought to mention that you don't need root to load a new recovery image or a ROM.

No problem. It's all a learning experience. I knew absolutely nothing about android 3 months ago. When installing signed zips (which is what you install via recovery or cwm, the install scripts set permissions to perform the installations. Nvflash, also has root access. It' only you the user that doesn't have it when android boots on the stock rom.
Android is a big learning experience. There are no manuals and the only place this all exists is either in a post somewhere or in our minds. What 'goodintentions' did by creating the dummies site was try to make it as much a one stop shop as possible for new (and old) users to get the most out of their gTabs, but, there is just so much and each rom has different nuances that it's not possible to put everything there. Especially since he alone is footing the bill to keep the site going.
You also have to remember that not everyone is an expert and we all benefit by putting our collective minds together and helping each other. What one person doesn't remember another user may & hopefully help out. Just as hopefully you can do the same to someone else with your experieces.
Anyway, didn't mean to preach...time to get off the soapbox. Hopefully you can now do what you set out to do & if you need more info, feel free to post again.

Yea, well so much for z4root. It does do a good job of restarting the tab though.

Are you saying it didn't work? I used it on my gTab & Cruz Reader without problems. It's really simple. Install, single butten press & it will reboot. Where did you download from? How do you know it didn't work? After install/button press/reboot, open Terminal Emulator, type su & return. Does it respond with a # prompt...if so you have root access.

[Q] OTA 1.4.2

Hello,
I have a rooted NT on 1.4.1 and this morning it seems the the OTA block did not function because it upgraded to 1.4.2 on it own.
It doens't seem to have affected the root so far, but I haven't explored everthing.
When I click on the NT Hidden settings OTA block i have a message stating :
Missing /system/bin/su
What can I do to block any further ota upgrades. When I rooted I am preety sure that I had made sure that OTA were blocked...
Thanks.
Nathalie
same here
I also looked at my rooted tablet today and it said the 1.4.2 OTA installed.
I had rooted from 1.4.1 using the SD card method.
I had run the OTA blocker but still got 1.4.2
It did not appear to break the root but I had limited time to check things.
Hoping to hear others comments on this issue.
And looking for a OTA block that works.
I tried titanium back-up block at one time but had issues, might just try it again.
This is bummer news. I was hoping I was done with the B&N BS.

I'm sticking with a rooted 1.4.0 for now. The issue is that I've read the B&N stock apps don't work on CM7. You could download the B&N app from the Market but it doens't have the same functionallity. Some who subscribe to magazines have reported they can't view their subscriptions on the B&N Market app. It seems to be an issue that depends on the magazine as some are OK and some aren't.

None of my magazines are accessible through any B&N Market app (Time, SI, GQ, etc.), but I thought rooting still allows you to access all the vanilla B&N content in addition to Market apps?
EDIT: Whoops, missed the part about CM7. Yes, a different ROM doesn't access the B&N stock apps, as I understand it.
So what should i do because, it seems that i have lost android market, it is asking for a new account. And the email and talk do not work either...
I am kinda lost here because i do not want to brick my NT...
Any suggestions?

The OTA has removed your root access. Which in turn means you can no longer use the packages installed after the root process. Basically refer back to GabrialDestruir's post where he said the 'root card' methods should still work fine. Your best bet IMO is to either install internally, or use an sdcard version of CWM recovery and if you want stock, download and install one of the stock flashable roms in the development section. Else install CM7. Or stay on 1.4.2, your call.

I'm running 1.4.2 and it's all nicely rooted, you just have to used a "Root Card" aka a card which by whatever means adds all sorts of root glory to your device. There are like two or three of these that actually exist for the Nook Tablet, choose one burn the sdcard and follow the instructions and you get a functioning stock root device.

So GabrialDestruir, I initially used Albert Wertz root method using an sd card.
Should I re-root my NT using the same method as it is right now or should I un-root it prior rooting it again.
It's not that clear for me yet how I should proceed.
Thanks.

[Q] Which unlock/root for new NT 16GB?

NT newbie here. I have previously rooted my T-Mobile G2 and installed custom ROMs on it.
I am looking to root a brand new NT 16GB, install the Play Store, Amazon Appstore.... and am looking for the best way to do it without voiding the warranty. I have been reading through the forums and am confused about which one to use.
Any pros/cons to installing a custom ROM?
All responses are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

You cannot root without voiding the warranty, that's one of the risks you take. It's the same with (almost) every device. I think the Nexus line may be the exception to that, but I'm not certain.
That said, the link in my sig works for me and many others.
If you've read around here you should be aware that unless you mess up REALLY bad there's always a way back to stock. And a n easy one at that in most cases!
You don't need to install new ROM to get access to Play and Amazon. Just a simple root will do if that's all you're after. I've only usde Albert Wertz's sd-card root so I have no opinion on "best", and I do think it's kind of frowned upon here to vent opinions of one developer's work against another. I'm pretty sure they are all VERY good!
There is also the alternative of running CM10 from sd card. I do that at the moment and I'm thoroughly impressed how smooth it is ad how well it works! And I can easily run stocj when I want to (I do like the stock reader and I prefer it to the BN app, but that's just my opinion!)

I found that the easiest way to recover to stock is to backup your own stock config to an external SDcard using the "backup and restore" option of the same Recovery (e.g., CWM) that you uses to flash ROM/gapps/Rooting zip file onto the tablet, and keep a copy of the backup folder as well as the particular version Recovery on your PC and archived CD/DVD etc. (or simply just save that SDcard aside) for the rainy days which are bound to happen by virtue of Murphy's Laws (I know this as it happened to me many times, completely accidentally when I wasn't even trying to root or flash a ROM onto my NT ...).
The backup copy can be used to restore to your stock config as long as none of the tablet's pertinent partitions is missing or inaccessible (e.g., due to some botched attempts to reformat/repartition/resize the tablet's emmc).

I'm not sure what the files are in my zip, honestly. The zip came originally from Indirect. I just reposted it because too many people couldn't find it (the original link had expired).
As far as voice search, have you tried updating Google search in the Play Store? That might help.

My presumption was mistaken, that app (TestCenterService) is not in the update.zip. I am guessing it's a system app and part of the original stock ROM but simply hidden from users in the NT's un-rooted state (hence I never saw it before).

Thank you, Asawi. I did look on Google, I really did, but I think I was a little too specific in looking for the error that I received, rather than looking up keyboard problems.
I tried the steps in the link that you sent, but they dont seem to work. I am trying to install a keyboard called Swype, and I downloaded an APK that I am told is a beta.....I suppose that doesnt matter?
When it says alternate launcher, would Go Launcher be a good one to choose?
I rebooted several times, but the new keyboard does not show up when I run the Accessibility shortcut that I created.
Thank you so much for your help
I haven't tried Swype myself but it is discussed in the topic I linked to. Have you read the whole thing, and it's still not working?

Perhaps I should upgrade to CM10? Do you have a good link for doing that?
If you have followed that you're running rooted stock Not CM7.
You can test run CM10 by running it from sd. Very easy. All you need is here: http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
Thank you so much for your help, Asawi I followed the directions that you sent me, and after having a bit of difficulty with part of them (I had trouble understanding why I had to use drag and drop to modify the zip files, but I just followed the directions and all worked correctly) it worked like a charm.
I guess I WAS a little stupid thinking that I was running CM7 because one of the main topics with that OS that I was running was to block the OTA updates (which, of course, means that they are updating the Nook OS, not an Android OS)
This Jellybean OS looks REALLY nice and I am having a lot of fun working with it.....I also like the fact that it is all installed to my SD card so I still have access to the stock (unrooted!) Nook OS and reader as well......I just use the Nook for reading books, and boot to Android if I want to do anything else.
One thing that I would like to be able to do is access a couple of apps that I bought from B&N when running Android. Is that possible? If not, no biggie.
Again, thanks for your help!
Jim :good:
Isn't that sd card awsome?! :good:
I don't think you can access the BN apps while in Android mode, But most of the freebies I checked out there were freebies in Play Store as well, so I got them there instead,
And half the time I just follow the instructions without having a clue whyI do what I do except "it works".

Most of those that Play Store says are incompatible are not incompatible. It is just that the Nook HD/HD+ is not a device that should be accessing their site (it should be accessing B&N store). So just reading the characteristics of the device (screen size, density, and many other things), it does not know what to think, so it just says not compatible. Most of them will run. Just get them somewhere else, Amazon, 1mobile, sideloaded from other devices etc.
I only have found one app that would not run. Google Voice.

I already posted this yesterday here, Chrome_18_0_1026320.apk from apktop says it missing something after installing. Already read somewhere about an older version which should work, but I haven't figured out which is the most recent one which does work. I want to install the latest working version.
I used this method for "incompatible device apps":
Some apps showed incompatible device on Play Store so I downloaded and installed them on to a rooted Galaxy SII phone using the Temp Unroot function. Then back-upped with Titanium Backup and e-mailed it by Gmail. Then download it to my at that point rooted HD+ (2.0.4). Apps still didn't work because my HD+ was rooted, but worked after the 2.0.5 update, as my HD+ isn't rooted any more at the moment. I think this workaround still works for many apps. (Only the root was lost after the update, so the rest still is working like before).
So some testing needs to be done before you can say an app really is incompatible. Would be good maybe to make a list of some apps, not?
Another APK that does not work...
Also I have tried to install Subway Surfer from 1mobile, google play store, and downloaded apk. In all three instances it installs and gets to start screen which lasts about 5 seconds. Then screen flashes and goes back to home or launcher. Really wish I could figure this one out. Two Nook HD's for the kids and most wanted game does not work. :crying: Jay

I am sure it's just a setting that it doesn't like but I have tried it on both HD 's with the same results My nooks are not rooted but used your zips for stock. All other apps have installed and worked thus far. Do you have any idea what the app may be hanging up on with the nook? Thx

Is he saying it is running because of losing root? You can test that by installing gapps without root. See my cwm thread to see how to get that.

Hi, I have Subway Surfers running fine on my Nook HD+, it's ver. 1.6.0 dated 2nd January 2013. I've had it running on Cm10 and now CM10.1 roms fine.
Guessing here but it does have the option for in app purchasing, maybe that's why it's not liking it on the stock Tom with Gapps side loaded? It's a free app so can upload the APK if you like? Pm me if needed

Hey I am thinking the issue may be that I am not fully rooted but rather did Leapinlar's stock zip flashes for unknown sources and such. Do you guys think using the universal root zip and flashing that may solve my issues? Also will running the universal root zip work now that I have already done the other GAPPS, Extras, Unknown Sources zip

Yes, the root can be added later with no problem. You notice he said that app worked on CM10, not stock. I doubt if root will help. But you can try and if you decide you want to remove root, I have a zip for that too.

Yes I ended up doing this last night
Now I'm running 2.0.5 rooted with gapps installed, as well as running CM10 off of an 8GB MicroSDHC of mine
Thanks!

I really this tablet but the big dealbreaker for me at this point is some basic apps are not compatible or at least play store think it is. Is there any way around this?

I've managed to use ES File Explorer to backup a couple of apps that the Play Store listed as "incompatible."
Plants vs. Zombies comes up as incompatible and I can't get ES to back it up.
Real Racing 2 comes up as compatible, but when you launch it the first time it wants to install additional files. That secondary step fails.
Further, i can't get ES to back it up either.

Great, being able to add AND remove root is what I was looking for, might have missed that while reading here. That would work like a "temp unroot", just not by a single click in an app, but that wouldn't be a big problem. So maybe it's time to give CM10 a try now.
Indeed some apps suddenly do work when your device is not rooted, so they do a check. Because I had them installed while being rooted and lost root because of the 2.0.5 update I could notice that they worked afterwards. On the rooted Galaxy SII I used the "Temp unroot" option in SuperSU, so I could install about all apps, those that need root access and those which don't want root access to install, run or both.
I do believe I used Titanium Backup while "Temp unroot" was on, while you only can install Titanium Backup on a rooted device as far as I know. Need to check this once more, it wasn't my phone I used.
Playing with and without root might be needed to see if some apps do or don't work on the HD+. At least by this you can out-rule whether being rooted or not is causing the app not to install and/or work.

You did not miss it. It was probably not there when you read it. I am always changing and adding things to my CWM thread. You need to watch the change log in the second post of that thread.

Anyone else tried to run Words with Friends from CM10 SD card? It installs OK from the Google Play store, but locks up after 1 or 2 turns. If not for this, I'd have very little reason to ever boot back into stock OS.

From the android log it would appear it's the ability of in-game billing causing the issue:
D/InAppBillingManager( 5896): AndroidBilling: No Billing Support Yet!
Not sure how to get around it but that seems to be the issue.
