[Q] any updates on the XP mass USB storage? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know Samsung's driver didn't work when it first came out. I installed it recently (following the same link), and still no dice. Any rumors or updates on when they're expected to support mass storage usb driver for Windows XP (32 bit)?

Never, the device does not support the USB Mass Storage class and never will. There are fundamental limitations preventing that approach. If it did, it would work without drivers under XP, even under Win98SE.
If you mean when MTP support (which is what our device uses for file transfers - MTP is NOT USB Mass Storage) will come to Windows XP - Who knows. Maybe never. You may need to use ADB (USB Debugging) to transfer files. Check out Droid Explorer at http://de.codeplex.com/

MTP mode with Win xp is fully functional with the TW roms.

Yes, I meant MTP. I just want a way to transfer large files easier than going through the network. So, if you have XP, the only alternative is to use a different ROM?
I think this question has been covered a few times on XDA. Thanks for indulging.

I don't think a different ROM will fix it. However, if you install the ADB utilities on your XP machine, you can transfer files via ADB.
It's about 1/3 the speed of using the USB host mode dongle and a USB thumb drive though.

Not Recognized By Computer

My device isn't recognized by my computer. Is the tablet supposed to prompt me to enable USB storage when it's plugged into a computer?
Nope...For me it just shows up in my computer..a new window doesnt pop up like it regularly does for new items inserted.
win xp didn't worked for me either - win 7 worked without any problems
I guess I'm not clear. When I had a rooted NOOKcolor (replaced stock ROM with a Gingerbread one), on the device itself would be a prompt to enable USB storage when it was plugged into a computer. This would appear in the notification bar at the bottom. Once I clicked yes/ok on the device, only then would it appear on my computer as a storage device. This doesn't happen with the Sony. I'm using a Mac.
So, those with a computer that recognizes the device, are you prompted on the tablet to enable USB storage or does it simply appear on your computer as a storage device with no prompting? Again, I'm not referring to your computer prompting you to do anything. I don't have another Honeycomb tablet to answer my own question. Thanks.
Honeycomb doesn't support USB mass storage. It uses MTP instead so things may work
a bit different than you expect. If you're on a Mac you need to download the Android file transfer program from google.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! Now I can stop scratching my head in bewilderment. Now I recall reading about Android file transfer program. I think I downloaded it months ago.
Yep, just checked my Downloads folder. It's been sitting here, never installed.

Connecting to computer

How do u connect it to computer? I tried connecting it to the dock and the tablet nothing comes up in windows. I installed the asus pc suite and sync.
PC sync never worked for me even on my original tf! Never got it to work!
what I do is copy to an SD and then to the prime. But yeah same. Sync doesn't work even to the internal storage. I dont get it lol
It says to use an updated windows 7,mine well, "isn't" updated. Almost beta. What are you using?
When i connect my Prime via the usb cable a message pops up and i can access the internal storage and transfer files without any extra software.
I use win 7 x64 professional with all the latest patches, but no microsoft media player (read somewhere that you need it on win XP because of some missing protocol) and the 64gb version of the transformer with the ota update installed.
Make sure that you have the USB drivers from the Asus website. They are not included with the suite. They are on the same support page though.
I was only able to connect & transfer files to my Prime by doing a factory reset. In the process I lost the stock pictures that come with it.However this allowed me to transfer files after doing the reset.

Same here. Shows up as an mtp device in explorer and I can address internal and SD storage.
Try the drivers from Asus as suggested, especially if you have automatic updates disabled in windows for some rediculous reason.
TF201 / XDA premium
what do u do with those drivers? It wasnt an exe so i didnt know what to do with them.
Are u connecting with the wire that it comes with the prime or the usb input on dock? Im using the wire that it came with, that should be able to connect right.

that's the only way to connect it, the usb port on the dock will not let you connect to a PC.
I dont know how to get it to work then ive connected it in every input and it doesnt do anything
If it's simply for transferring data between the PC and the Tablet try using ES File Explorer.
I have it installed on all my Tablets & Phones. I've never connected any of them to my Laptops via USB. I simply use ES File Explorer. Job done.

USB Mass storage

Hey I am on NEAT Rom with my SGS2 i9100 with Siyha kernel.
Every time I switch to Mass storage mode my Windows Explorer will just freeze, "My Computer" seems to be loading judging on the bar.
I am using Windows 7 x64.
I tried running sfc, chkdsk, uninstalling USB controllers et al. Anyone know a solution?
Also happens with CF Root kernel.
Edit: If I take out the SD to transfer to it manually with my SD Card reader it has no issues, only if I use Mass Storage through the phone.
Bump
Does UMS with your device work on other computers? Or Linux even?

Works fine on my other Windows 7 computer. Also x64.
Try to reinstall Samsung USB drivers

I'm stabbing in the dark here, but maybe some files on your Windows installation are damaged.
Try running a
Code:
sfc /scannow
in an administrator command prompt (if you have UAC).

Yeah did that as well, no errors found, same with chkdsk C: /f /r /x.
I'll just reinstall it when Windows 8 RTM arrives in July.

where do you reinstall the drivers from ?
Find SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones package and install it. It's about a 23mb file.

I tried both Kies(with its reinstall driver thing), the seperate package after I nuked kies, tried the package with kies.
I think drivers are fubar somehow, but it baffles me why Mass Storage mode would need drivers since there is support built into it in Windows since 2000.
Samsung, good with phones, terrible with accompiying computer software.

I've had problems with the drivers. Samsung's driver package solved my all problems somehow.
MTP needs drivers to work. The thing you mention is the USB storage mode. It should work fine without drivers

[Q] Is there any ROM/APP wich enables UMS on this smartphone?

Hi,
MTP and PTP are full of problems... so I want to have the old reliable USB Massive Storage (UMS) enabled in this phone, Is there any ROM with this feature?
I'm with stock and I would prefer not to unlock the boot loader unless I can get that feature with a ROM.
I tried this app with no success
I want any PC to detect my phone as a USB flashdrive containing only the sdcard files, not any partitions like system or data or such.
thanks

Nope. UMS is dead as far as Google is concerned.
what do you mean by that? I know some ICS ROMs with UMS (but for other phones) so it's no dead dead dead and doing a quick search there are some people using ums un Jelly bean
What I mean is, UMS support isn't the way google wants people to do things.
It's a kludge when google wants phone memory not be segmented for apps vs media and such.
I've found MTP works very well on this phone compared to others i've owned.
It's a partitioning issue on any phone that comes with ICS natively.
mmm may be I wasn't clear about that, sorry,
I only want any PC to detect my phone as a USB flashdrive containing only the sdcard files, not any partitions like system or data or such.
And we are saying it isn't going to happen. What trouble are you having with mtp? Maybe we can help.
Ok, thanks, my problem is the following
I have 3 windows machines and in all of them the following happened
> I connected the LGOG to the pc and selected the pc software option in the phone
> Installed the LG software
> The LG software Drive disappeared from "Computer" (as expected I suppose)
> The phone-drive never showed in Computer
> I unplugged the phone and plugged again and selected MTP
> The phone-drive never showed in Computer either
In one of the PCs I got an error while installing the MTP driver, don't know how to solve that, if I try to reinstall the LG software the LG software driver disappears
Also I can't copy files to my phone if I donĀ“t have Administrative access to the PC... that's main the reason I want UMS
Uh oh.
So, if I understand correctly, I'm going to need to install CM in order to use my phone as a thumbdrive.
While I have no problems using MTP, the INSANELY SLOW TRANSFERS are basically going to force me to find another solution.
Great phone, but 2MB/sec on a standard USB 2.0 port just isn't working.
More research, it appears that I'll need to install an FTP server on my phone, or use a wireless data sharing app (sadly not possible in my case as my wireless network is firewall-external to my wired one).

Question Phone won't connect to pc via usb

My phone is not recognized by either my home or work pcs. I've googled and did the basics - enabled usb debugging, preferences set to file transfer. I've never had this problem with a phone before.
It will connect to a usb stick via adaptor so I can transfer files with a multi-step process. This is a pain.

That's strange, either your port is damaged or you don't have drivers installed. I've heard if this happening on Windows 11, never had a problem on Linux

Do you have the latest USB drivers installed?
Get the Google USB Driver | Android Studio | Android Developers
The Google USB Driver is required to perform adb debugging on Windows with Google devices.
developer.android.com
The drivers are installed. My home pc is what I used to unlock/root the phone.
When I look at Show Hidden Icons -> Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media, there is an option to remove Pixel 6. Yet it doesn't display under File Explorer or XYplorer.
If I start up my Arch (linux) vm with VMware Workstation Pro under Removeable Devices there is an entry for Google Pixel 6 with the option to Connect (Disconnect from Host). The contents can be under Arch.
Have you tried different cables & different ports? Sometimes the cable is the problem for me.
Different cables/ports had no effect.
I've got the same issue, what's weird is I can move files with ADB but can't in Windows.
If you figure anything out please hit this back up?
First make sure you have a good usb cable.
Some cables are only made for charging.
Second install the USB drivers from Google.
If you can transfer files, but can not use ADB/Fastboot, then it is a driver issue.

Cables/drivers are good. ADB/fastboot work fine it's the transferring of file/recognision of device in windows explorer that is the issue.

Switching from charging mode to file transfer mode in the Connected devices/USB menu should give you access to Android's internal storage from Windows. USB debugging or other Dev options aren't necessary.
I had this same problem. Connecting to pc would show connection options but they were all greyed out and the phone would only charge. I couldn't find any option in the standard settings to change this.
Eventually I found 'default usb configuration' in dev options. Default was set to 'charge only'. You can sort it from there.
edit to add: although re-reading op you may have tried this already.
I solved mine by setting to PTP mode then the PC started to recognize the phone connected

It's the stupid Windows drivers. There is an .inf file you need to either edit or delete but I forgot which. Might be wpdmtp.inf in the windows directory, right click and install. You might have to uninstall the driver in device manager first, the one with the exclamation mark if it's there. Sorry it's been about 3 or 4 years since I have done this but it's most likely a driver issue.

I agree about drivers, that they're either corrupted or incomplete. What's going on in Windows Device Manager when the phone is in a certain state?
During normal operation I assume the general purpose driver is always visible.
Device Manager > Portable Devices > Pixel 6
In fastboot mode with USB debugging enabled, is this driver showing up?
Device Manager > Android Device > Android Bootloader Interface
While Android is running with USB debugging enabled, do you see an ADB driver (the daemon may need to be started)?
Device Manager > Android Device > Android Composite ADB Interface
