USB Mass storage - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey I am on NEAT Rom with my SGS2 i9100 with Siyha kernel.
Every time I switch to Mass storage mode my Windows Explorer will just freeze, "My Computer" seems to be loading judging on the bar.
I am using Windows 7 x64.
I tried running sfc, chkdsk, uninstalling USB controllers et al. Anyone know a solution?
Also happens with CF Root kernel.
Edit: If I take out the SD to transfer to it manually with my SD Card reader it has no issues, only if I use Mass Storage through the phone.

Bump

Does UMS with your device work on other computers? Or Linux even?

I'm stabbing in the dark here, but maybe some files on your Windows installation are damaged.
Try running a
Code:
sfc /scannow
in an administrator command prompt (if you have UAC).

Yeah did that as well, no errors found, same with chkdsk C: /f /r /x.
I'll just reinstall it when Windows 8 RTM arrives in July.

where do you reinstall the drivers from ?
Find SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones package and install it. It's about a 23mb file.

I tried both Kies(with its reinstall driver thing), the seperate package after I nuked kies, tried the package with kies.
I think drivers are fubar somehow, but it baffles me why Mass Storage mode would need drivers since there is support built into it in Windows since 2000.
Samsung, good with phones, terrible with accompiying computer software.

I've had problems with the drivers. Samsung's driver package solved my all problems somehow.
MTP needs drivers to work. The thing you mention is the USB storage mode. It should work fine without drivers

[Q] any updates on the XP mass USB storage?

I know Samsung's driver didn't work when it first came out. I installed it recently (following the same link), and still no dice. Any rumors or updates on when they're expected to support mass storage usb driver for Windows XP (32 bit)?

Never, the device does not support the USB Mass Storage class and never will. There are fundamental limitations preventing that approach. If it did, it would work without drivers under XP, even under Win98SE.
If you mean when MTP support (which is what our device uses for file transfers - MTP is NOT USB Mass Storage) will come to Windows XP - Who knows. Maybe never. You may need to use ADB (USB Debugging) to transfer files. Check out Droid Explorer at http://de.codeplex.com/
MTP mode with Win xp is fully functional with the TW roms.

Yes, I meant MTP. I just want a way to transfer large files easier than going through the network. So, if you have XP, the only alternative is to use a different ROM?
I think this question has been covered a few times on XDA. Thanks for indulging.

I don't think a different ROM will fix it. However, if you install the ADB utilities on your XP machine, you can transfer files via ADB.
It's about 1/3 the speed of using the USB host mode dongle and a USB thumb drive though.

[SOLVED] can't get files of my device (tried Windows 7 x64 & Ubuntu 11.10 x64)

Hey folks,
got a "little" problem with my device. I tried to copy some videos of it and it just won't work.
---
I connect my device to my PC and these things happen ...
Windows 7 x64:
Nothing.
Windows 7 x64 with Kies installed:
Windows sees that there is a new device, but it won't let me open as a storage ... "Code 10" in the device manager.
Windows 7 x64 with Kies installed and device in mass storage mode:
Windows sees that there is a new device, but it won't let me open as a storage ... "Code 10" in the device manager.
Ubuntu 11.10 x64:
Nothing.
Ubuntu 11.10 x64 and device in mass storage mode:
I see some files on my device, but when trying to open them, I only get some errors ... the real problem here, when I disconnect the USB cable (or unmount) then there are no files on my device left ... everything has been moved to "lost.dir" and I can´t open them from there, not even from my phone.
---
I tried to connect with USB debugging enabled, but it would work.
Any ideas?
/Edit 1:
The only way to copy stuff over to my computer is by using Kies Air ... and it takes ages for HD videos.
/Edit 2: THE SOLUTIONS LOL :-D
1. I had to connect my device via another USB slot
2. when USB debugging is enabled, it still wouldn't mount; then I installed this app https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jrtstudio.automount and now everything works just fine

1) Using a Rom? If yes check in thread if it, if this problem is already known.
2) Tried different USB-Slots?
3) Connect phone, search in device manager for the device and uninstall the drivers.
Then un- later replug the phone and wait if all drivers got installed again.

[Q] Archos 80 G9 and Usb Driver problem

Goodmornig everyone..!
I just bought an Archos 80 G9 Turbo 16GB and I cannot connect it with my computer that runs Windows 7 64bit
When I plug it, it is detected as an Unknown Device (error code 43) and nothing is mounted.. (but tablet is in "slow charge")
In an old Win XP computer is working good, this made me think it's not completely tablet's fault..
here what I've tried, deeply searching on internet:
-Downloaded ADB android Drivers (in Archos site, on internet, various sources), forced installation of them, problem come out: Drivers are not for a 64 bit Os
-Uninstalled Kies, LG Pc suite and rebooted after every change..nothing changed
-Unactivate and reactivate after reboot Windows Media Player 12..no change
-Changed Usb Mode in tablet from MTP to PTP.. nothing changed
-Installed a lot of USB apps in Google Play and tried changing values..no change
-Upgraded tablet from GingerBread to ICS, deeply wiped and restored several times, and in every configuration, I allways had same results..
-Changed USB cable, several of them tested..and guess?? Nothing..eheh
-Tried shouting at it, tried kissing and asking for his forgiveness..but nothing
I'm stuck on Stock! i cannot upgrade it with XDA custom, I can only connect to pc via FTP server....!
Any Clues?!?!
Thank You to all!
1. To root and to enable SDE menu you need only adb driver
2. You can transfer archos.ext4.update files using FTP from pc to tablet
3. Recovery for flashing firmware update or custom kernel creates ramdisk which is seen as standard usb storage device- "just works"
You need to give full access (Everybody) to the folder where Android SDK is installed in Program Files (x86) and through Android SDK Manager select the second item "Android SDK Platfrom-tools for download.
This worked for me on Windows 7 Ultimate.
Ooops overread something... forget it!!!
Have you checked for the correct MTP driver package...

Dowloaded and istalled a few from windows... the problem is, if it would be an MTP problem, I should not have it in PTP mode... I suppose...
EDIT: tried disabling Integrity Checks for non signed drivers with these string in cmd:
bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING ON

These are the first one I tried.. From their site.. Not working.. Thankyou!
I wrote them in Contact and support in that site, copying and pasting the same I wrote here, they answered me, two days later.. Excited in what solution they could give me,from the heights of their knowledge, I suddenly opened and the answers was:
Please write the email in English.
Are they kidding me? This makes me suppose they have not even tried in reading it.. Well.. 1000 thanks for you and you support..!

Second reply from Archos, this time they read it, but only first few lines..
their reply is:
"We invite you to connect the device to a 32 bits system and then to check if the Archos is seen by the pc."
Already done, and it's working with that (WIN XP)
Did you try to install manually the MTP driver from the device manager of the PC ?
YES.
any new clue from here?
Thankyou!

1 thing, when you are plugging into your PC, are you plugging it into the main hub (rear of PC), or a front port?
I had a devil of a job getting mine to recognise the driver, in the it turned out it really needs to be plugged into the rear port, it may have been a conflict on my PC, but worth a shot.

Yes, that one and a modified one.. the problem is, it remains as an "Unknown Device" (error 43).
I tried now to move that driver you suggested me in USERPROFILE (c:\USERS\"myname" and c:\USERS\"myname"\.android) is this you mean?
and same error: can't find in directory any compatible driver for the device. make sure it's done for a x64 system...
It seams to me device is not recognized at all.. not PTP or MTP or USB DEBUG....
but it works with win xp...! I tried again..!
Another doubt I have is: when I plug it to the wall charger I found on the box, it goes on "Slow Charge".. is it normal? why not fast charge or Normal? may be an hint?

OK try this :-
Download the naked universal drivers attached to this post and unzip somwhere!! (got this from the Sensation forum, would say thanks but I can't remember who posted them).
Attache your G9 then go into device manager.
Now find your badly installed driver and uninstall it. Keep doing this until all drivers are uninstalled.
Now unplug and reattach G9, let windows do it's thing. You will still have a excalamation next to "Android Drivers" at this point.
Right click on the driver in device manager and "Update Driver Software", then click "Browse My Computer....", now click on "Let Me Pick from a list...", then click the "Have Disk" button. Browse to the folder where you extracted the Universal Naked Drivers and select the andorid_winxusb.inf file.
If you get unsigned warnings click on the "trust me" or whatever it says.
Driver should now be installed.
The adb_usb.ini file is really for if you use adb, if you do it need to go in c:\users\you\.android directory (create the directory if it doesn't exist).
You can test adb connectivity by using "adb devices" from the command line.
Hope this helps

I think this is probably because your USB cable only has 2 internal cables, not 4.
IIRC, the outside 2 are USB and data chat and the inside 2 are for 5v power.
If your G9 detects the cable doesn't have the two middle connections then it will do a slow charge regardless.
Are you using the cable you got with the G9??

I too have run across this problem--AFTER woprking for 6 months with it under ADB just fine. Not just my work computer, home devices as well. Did you ever get this fixed?

Windows XP can not install usb drivers.

Hi, I am using windows xp 32 bit sp3.(work pc) I can not get any of the usb drivers to install. I have used the drivers I downloaded from the tool kit 5.0 still no good.
Messege I get is phone has been used before and needs to be ejected and pc rebooted.
I have tried every way I know to do what messege says.My problem is the phone is seen as a digital camera. This is not helping matters.
I can only connect via the camera and take pictures from phone to pc. Thats all.
Any ideas? ( I am in UK)
Install KIES that install the drivers .

Does a USB icon appear on your phone at the top left of the screen when you plug into USB? If so, drag down the notification bar. Does it say "Connected as a camera"? If so, tap that and select "Media device (MTP)"
http://db.tt/bcP5fVPt or go their, download the windows drivers, and run....simples

I have that driver. with out phone connected and everything uninstalled through device manager The drivers will not go in.
Messege is still either phone is or has been used and needs to be ejected then pc rebooted before trying install again.
None of this works.
I have tried using debug mode..phone came up in Device manager but with yellow question marks..no drivers could be found.
I am on a work pc with no admin priv.
I have connected phone in MTP mode. PC still sees a digital camera.
My work mate next to me has identical pc...When I plug S3 in to his pc I can connect to pc correctly It sees phone as portable device.
I looked at the drivers via device manager. My set of drives that don't work are..
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\usbscan.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ptpusb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ptpusd.dll THESE DO NOT CONNECT PHONE CORRECTLY
the pc that does connect correctly use...
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\wpdusb.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\wudfrd.sys THESE CONNECT CORRECTLY
How do I remove all trace of incorrect drivers and put correct ones in.
Kies does not allow my old S2 or my S3 to connect.
can not connect to microsoft update via works pc either.
I've finally fixed my usb problem on a WinXP pc by updating Windows Media Player (?!!). I was on version 9 and updated to 11. Then i've reinstalled the Samsung USB Drivers and there, it magically works. You won't probably like me, need of WMP 11 but it was the only solution for me. Hope this will work for you too. I guess, the update to WMP 11 has cleaned up and installed some required libs for the drivers, who knows.
Try to disable the usb debugging and connect GSII with the computer.
Some windows will pop up to alert you some drivers are missing.
Let the computer install drivers(just use automatic).
Done.

I think it is clear the the OP had already tried your suggestion many times, and it didn't work. I have the same problem, and have resorting to using a second PC to load files, or removing the SD card and plugging it into a separate SD card reader. I have done as you suggested many times. When I install the phone USB, it finds the USB device, selects the correct drivers, then spins for a long time and then fails.
I have not tried updating windows media player yet, will follow up with status after I do.

Don't ask me...why it works....but I have 3 Xp machines and one of them worked fine after installing WMP11 but the other 2 were still not happy until I installed the attached Microsoft framework file. INSTANT success after that.

Thanks for the upload!
When I updated my XP pc with WMP 11, it installed version1 of User-Mode Driver Framework; the current version for XP is v1.9. The only site I found that has the direct files is http://rghost.net/36571160. I have also attached the file here.

HTC One and Windows 8 64-bit

So I'm using the HTC One with Windows 8 64bit pc and when I plug in my phone it won't mount the sdcard so I can copy files from my pc. This works just fine when I plug the phone into a Windows 7 machine. Any ideas what is going on?

Might have to uninstall and reinstall drivers. Or it could be a USB 2.0/3.0 thing.
When I plug mine into my widows 8 tablet the htc sync doesnt show up.
are there drivers specific for windows 8 for this device?
Mine works in my usb 2 and 3 ports, but I had to try a few different drivers until I found one that worked. Windows 8 refuses to detect it in fastboot, though

can you share the drivers you are using for windows 8?
This is the driver that I am using
Same here. MTP works fine, Sync works fine, ADB works fine. Fastboot refuses to work, and mounting in recovery so far unsuccessful. (Win 8 x64).

No setting I know of. I think I'm using drivers from AIO Toolkit. Also installed/uninstalled Sync so not positive, but one of the two. FYI I had to uninstall VMware because it was hijacking device and giving it some virtual USB driver, might occur with others like VirtualBox also.
i had the same issues with my Win8 64-bit, Dell XPS12 Ultrabook with USB 3.0 ports and this thread helped me solve all my USB issues with the HTC One. May be worth trying...
I had issues on Win 8 64 bit on my One X a while back.
This worked for me and solved the problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2156665
. I used the program to uninstall the drivers and reinstalled them.
Also just realized that no mounting in recovery is normal ... still learning to remember that I have a new device .
Recoveries don't support pure MTP media devices (yet), so it is not possible at the moment.
maybe drivers can not work for 64bit system, or use the windows 8 enterprise 64bit to try this again. some program can not work fine on my windows 8 pro, but my friend's windows 8 enterprise can
