K, i'm aware there's a old post on this but no one's updated it in seven months. So here's the question again: why is my camera app so slow to launch? And how can I fix it?
I am running rooted stock 2.1-update1.
Baseband 2.1.55.
Kernel 2.6.29 [email protected] #1.
Build 2.1.1.A.0.6
I've turfed much of the bloatware. Does anyone have any (effective, proven) suggestions for speeding up the launching of the stock camera application from the hardware button? Its even slow if the program is running and i've just switched to the homescreen.
Thanks in advance!
Simon
How long? Have you compared it to another camera app? Like a Camera 360 or a Retro Camera or Vignette?
And have you tried installing a Task Manager to see what other apps are running in the background?
Maybe there are a dozen other apps running in the background.
Maybe try clearing cache for the Camera app....go under Settings->Applications and look for the Camera app.

I meant vs opening any other app on the device.
Just task killed - 105m free. pressing hardware button. 10 seconds.
Put camera in the task killer ignore list, cleared the cache, launched went into settings and fixed 'em. out to home screen. hit hardware button. its still almost 10 seconds to launch a native OS app. Conversely, my phone app launches within about 2/3rds of a second from pressing the touchscreen button.
On a whim, i put the camera button on the homescreen. still slightly slow, but faster than the hardware button - does that make any sense? is there some other task i should be ignoring for faster HW button access?
annoyed.
So it is normal when accessed using the Camera app icon in the app list, but the HW camera button on the side is slow.
I think the default Camera app is a lot weaker than Camera360, so I don't use it.
I don't use the camera button.
Anyone else have any suggestions?
There was a stock X10 camera optimization thread a while back.
what he said
you should try installing WolfBreaks rom. for me the native camera launches in 3-4second when i press the hardware button.

I installed the titanium v1.3.1 and am very happy with it ;but the camera button no longer works to launch the camera application.
If I open the camera application through the start menu it works AND the camera button works to take pictures.
All this isn't so bad because I could put a short-cut on the apps bar - if only I knew the application used to launch the camera.
I've already searched the titanium forum and cant find anything - so i figured this must be specific to the TG01.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks
My Evo 3D always started the standard Camera when I pressed the dedicated shutter button. Now I installed Camera Effects, and it starts that one instead of the HTC Camera.
Normally, I have a choice which one I want to start, and I can choose a standard one. But this time, it just picked Camera Effects...
I already went to the app, to disable the 'standard' features, but the button was greyed out.
How do I get the HTC Amaze camera back as default camera?
Go to manage applications and wipe that apps defaults.
Via My HTC Evo 3D On The Now Network From Sprint.

As I said, the button is greyed out...
I am using MikRunny 1.01, but that shouldn't be the problem.

Check the main(stock) camera app in Manage applications and CLEAR THE DEFAULTS.
Do the same in any other camera app you may have installed. Clear defaults.
Then when you press the camera button, it should ask which youd like to execute by default.
Its the same idea as if you had multiple browsers installed, for example on my nexus s. I press the browser icon in the launcher dock and it will ask me which to launch and whether I want to set it as default.
It normally asks me wether I want to make the app standard or not, but this time, I didn't.
All the defaults are already cleared, so I don't know what to do...
Sometimes it starts the normal camera app, but when I do it again, it opens Camera Effects... It's very odd...
Hmm, that's weird. I installed Default App manager, and it tells me that I don't have a default app set for the Camera.
So now I fixed it by making the Camera as default, via the Default App Manager.
This thread can be closed!
Thanks for the help!
Edit: Nope, can't be closed.
Still not fixed.
Camera is now default app, but it stÃll starts the other app...
I guess I'll just delete it.
Figured I'd post this here. Worked perfectly for me.
I have Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2. and have not rooted (and don't intend to do so). I decided to buy Camera Zoom FX apps (was on sale). I think it's better (though a bit slow at times) and more versatile. I wanted to make it my default camera app and there was on option for that in the app's settings. However, when I try to quick access the camera via lock screen by tapping and rotating, the stock camera app is opened. Doesn't this mean that the default camera app is still the stock camera app?
I've tried to solve this issue by reading the forums. Some people are saying that after I have selected Camera Zoom FX as default camera app in the app's settings, Jelly Bean should ask me to select the default camera app when I open the camera app. It does not do so. The other solution mentioned was to go Settings -> Application Manager -> All and the choose the camera app and tap "Clear defaults". However, this option is greyed out/disabled and cannot be tapped.
Could this all mean that without rooting Jelly Bean does not give the user the option to change the default camera app?
Help would be appreciated.
you might try this

i dont know this might work or not but you could try disabling the default camera from settings>apps>all apps> camera>force stop and then disable
since you phone isnt rooted this only the best which you could do
I suggest you put the Camera Zoom Fx on you lockscreen and launch it directly from there. Samsungs hold-rotate feature is a sure fire way of eventually dropping your phone.
I have 3 cameras on my lockscreen. Stock, Camera FV-5 and HDR Pro.
I want to use a different camera app from stock, is there anyway to change what app the hard camera button opens other then stock on un rooted devices?
Anyone?
i dont believe so. not with out a mod atleast.
i had a quick play and couldnt find an option.
I'd like this also, I don't think the standard sony camera is that great. It's always in automatic modus and that doesn't do the job for me.
Is this possible with a rooted device? I'd like to fully move over to Google camera, but the lock screen shortcut and hard camera button still go to the stock camera.

On some roms there is a possibility to change the shortcut on the lockscreen, but not for the button.
I know that flashing htc camera on cm12.1 caused the camera button to launch htc's app.

Hi guys,
Just came across "Open Camera" app and love it. I am struggling to make it the default Camera App in my phone, so that when I press the Sony Side Camera button it opens the "Open Camera" instead of the stock Sony app. Also, once Open Camera is open, I would like to be able to use the side camera button as shutter, which currently does not work.
Possible? Any instructions on how to do it?
Thanks in advance!
I'm using open camera too and everything works after I froze the default camera app but I'm on RR, not stock. Are you rooted? If yes freeze the default camera using any root app manager. If not, check if you can disable the camera app using adb.
Also check if you have the option 'disabled apps' in developer settings. I can't recall if it exists on stock firmware.
Root and install some xposed modules like "xposed additions" or Music buttons.
Freeze the stock camera and remap the camera button
