[MIGHT_HELP_YOU] Having Verizon 3G issues ? Here's the solution - Fascinate Android Development

So I started having the 3G issues for the past week. This was on the latest Froyo ComROM which was running fine and I hadn't changed anything. First it started like it taking 5 minutes to connect to 3G, then on CM7 icon would show up for 5s then go out, that's all it did. Same on MIUI. On ComROM GB, it didn't show up at all.
So I called Verizon, they walked with me through troubleshooting and concluded that it wasn't their network but my device :smh:
Not satisfied, I remember a solution from a few months ago when 4G network went out and people started having 3G issues.
So what I did is activate my spare VZ phone on my line. Half an hour later I activated my Fascinate back on the same line. BOOM! as soon as the phone boots up on ComROM GB, 3G is ON! Now the 3G turns as soon as I push the button in the windowshade, and off as soon as I turn the button off.
EDIT: Yes I posted it in dev section. But this is because a lot of people flashing ROMs seem to be having 3G issues. So that they might see the solution better, I posted this here. Feel free to move if you don't agree with my reasoning.
EDIT2: Speedingcheetah mentions
If you do an ESN swap with a standard or dummy ESN, you are removing the unlimited data plan and get stuck with the new capped 2gb plan when you re-activate...You have to swap with a another smartphone in order to keep unlimited data.

Sounds vaguely familiar... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051543

It was their network. The problem could have been fixed with a DMU reset on their end. They just wanted to make you feel like it was your fault.

ha ha ha ha ha.
Yeah. I actually opened this just to see what kind of development tweaks were listed. Soon as I read it I thought "uh oh. here it comes"
But hey, with all the people jumping ship from our phone lately, maybe the flame-ers (not "flamers") jumped into other forums as well.

I had a similar problem; also fixed with a DMU reset (un/re-register a phone's ESN/MEID). Once you re-assign your phone to your account, you get stable, reliable 3G connectivity.
And I don't think that Verizon Wireless was trying to make anyone feel like it was their fault, or to avoid blame... they probably have no idea what the problem was, or how to fix it at all. The honest truth is that most people on these forums know more about their phones and troubleshooting problems with the Verizon network, than the Verizon support techs.

which makes it extremely frustrating when you call for help, you have to train them and then they get the snarky attitude when you tell them you don't need to "do a factory reset" or "uninstall some apps to free up memory"
it took me three calls to get someone who would agree to do the ESN swap over the phone, they kept insisting i do 15 other things first so on the third call i simply told them I have done all of that....please try the ESN swap....and what do you know...it fixed it

I find that it is always better to play dumb. People feel threatened when confronted with someone who knows more than them (especially Support Techs, whose job it is to know the answer).
If I needed an ESN swap, I would walk into a Verizon store with a restored stock ROM on it, walk up to the Service desk there, and basically just say something along the lines of "I dunno... it don't work". They will eventually just give you a new refurbished phone, effectively performing an ESN / MEID swap onto new hardware.
Playing dumb is often the faster, more direct way of getting what you want.

Careful, can loose unlimited data plan
If you do an ESN swap with a standard or dummy ESN, you are removing the unlimited data plan and get stuck with the new capped 2gb plan when you re-activate...You have to swap with a another smartphone in order to keep unlimited data.
Just wanted to mention this, since it is a fairly new thing.

thanks will put in OP

Of course, if you don't have a spare smartphone, the only other way is to call for a replacement device sent out to you...That's what I had to do...

That's the thing, I didn't want someone else's used reject phone they brought back only because it would only overclock to 1.2Ghz instead of 1.6. I knew my hardware and had taken very good care of it since launch, looks brand new even today....

just a heads up
Just a heads up guys you dont need to call verizon for a ESN swap..its as easy as dialing *228 press option 1 and follow the directions super simple..you can also perform the swap on myverizon.com.....you can avoid verizon all together and its much faster....FYI if using *228 its easiest when swapping smartphone to smartphone just make sure that the phone you are trying to activate isnt already active otherwise you will run into problems.. hope it helps

They are sent back to the manufacture and are completely checked and tested...that's what Verizon says...and anyway, I can confirm, the Like New replacement I got works far better the the one i bought brand new ever did...

...*228 didn't work for me...I ended up calling Verizon service and after about 30 minutes on a landline while he tried this and that, including a full reset of the phone and a series of "*#" key presses, 3G came back. I did specifically mention that I was on the unlimited plan, if that helps. This is after trying a plethora of roms and ota leaks.
This is a problem on their side.
Hopefully, ya'll will get someone just as helpful from tech support as I did.

Having trouble getting vzw to replace my fassy with a Charge, DI2 or X2

I have contacted Verizon customer support about the dropped/missing call issue in order to get a replacement droid charge, x2 or a inc 2. I have had no luck in getting a offer to replace the fassy with one of the above. Does anyone have any solutions/suggestions as to how to get vzw to replace the fascinate?

Go into the store, pay for a different phone, and have them activate it.
Seriously, ever other person on here is getting away with fraud. Boo hoo I missed a call once or twice so I need a new phone. A few people manage to talk their way into replacements and now everyone wants to do it.
It's a cell phone, not a hard line. Just like everything else in this world, there's going to be some issues at one point or another.
True, but if the company has itself found a flaw in the phone they need to replace what is faulty. I have been going through the threads and wanted to see if anyone had and information to help. I was told by CS at Verizon that if was likely my google forwarding that was making me miss calls. Yes, I miss calls. Most here are not committing fraud btw, that is just your opinion. I believe I speak the truth when I say most fassy owners miss calls. I never have this problem on my droid 1 or NV-touch.
While I agree that some are probably over exaggerating their problems in order to get a new device, it is a problem nonetheless. If it was nothing more than your standard cellular issues then this program would not be offered.
Not even close to fraud. Perhaps somewhat unethical (if you haven't noticed the issue).

I hate to contradict you, but it is a legitimate problem. You're slightly mistaken: many people have the problem, but at least in my case, I thought it was a software issue related to rooting/flashing custom ROMs. However, once the bulletin came out that it was a Samsung issue, we took advantage of it. It's a real problem - I spoke directly with Samsung (not Verizon) tech support, and they said that there is a team working to resolve the issue as we speak. So, perhaps it is a bit unethical. However, it is completely within our bounds as paying customers to do so.
I didn't even plan to ask for a replacement until my phone missed the call from my (now) boss offering me a job. When you have a job, you can't afford to miss a quarter of your calls.
Wow, close call. Glad you still got the job.

Sorry but when calls are not recieved or Text are missed, then wi/fi does not work and neither does GPS there is a problem with the phone. This is my wifes and never been rooted. I am calling today to see what they say. I have already done factory rest/data wipe. Did not help.

Do your homework before you post stupid and wrong stuff. I talked with Samsung customer support about the offer and the replacements, their supervisor said it is Samsung that is providing the Charge, as well ad other devices, some from competitors for those who want nothing to do with Samsung devices anymore, because ALL SCH-I500 devices are having serious call and data issues, they are doing it voluntarily trying to make it right with their customers. Samsung understands there is a very real problem with the I-500 phones, they have not, at the time I spoke to them, figured out what exactly it is or how to fix it. Their decision to do this is great from a customer service point of view. If it's broke and they can't fix it, they should replace it. Would you just accept a car being a lemon and the dealer/manufacturer saying sorry quit whining about, NO you'd take their ass to court, why should this be different, because it's a phone, get real.

All right, everyone chill now... No need for another flame war As for the vzw rep: I'm not convinced he/she is being completely honest with you - if you're planning to call customer service again, ask for tier 2 support - they are reported to be more inclined to help you. If you go to the vzw store again, perhaps a different vzw store is near where you live - try going there
Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...
I would rather they fix the issues. I love the screen, size and weight of the Fascinate. IMHO, it's better than the replacement options. Of course, before my 1 yr is up, I may look into taking advantage of my warranty, if it's not fixed.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I went to another store any they offered a replacement and when the rep looked at his screen for ordering he said it showed 0 for quantity. I called CS and told them that I had been offered a replacement and right away I was put through to tier2. The tier2 person told me that I could have either a DX2 of DI2, then he put me through to another person. I asked that person about the Samsung charge and he told me that the Charge can only be ordered in-store as his system does not allow for the Charge to be ordered as a replacement kit although it is offered as an option. I will be going back to the VZW Corporate store to try to get my Charge (fingers crossed).
***Update***
Getting the Charge 2nd day mail!
I wonder when the Galaxy S2 will come out and if it will be offered as a replacement, if everything isn't fixed on the Fascinate by then.
I called tonight only offered another Fassy which is fine I just want a phone for my wife that works. I will put it through its paces to make sure it is good to go. They did say it should have all updates already.
Yeah I called and told them my problems with missed calls. to tell the truth I didn't even notice a problem till my wife tried to call me a bunch of times and my phone never rang or anything, then it happened to my wifes phone. My mother even said there were days she couldn't reach me because of it. I just asked if there was a way to fix it she said to do a factory reset did that didn't help. Then i was offered the x2 Dinc2 and the charge. she said for us to go to the store and see which one I liked better then to call back with my choice. I'm getting the Dinc2 when they get one in and my wife chose the x2.
But if they said that a fix was getting ready to come down the line I would have kept the fassy my wife and I love the phone. But we need it to be a phone.
They wont do anything if your warranty is out of date!
If your phone is older than a year they try to push you to use an update.
I just tried a local store and the CS number asked for tier 2 support and she basically said your phone is out of warranty sorry.

EVO 3D guys: Get out of your Sprint contract without an ETF!

I've realized in the past few days that Sprint's customer service still hasn't improved in the past few years and actually has gone downhill. Even Executive Services was unable to resolve my issues, and refuses to replace my phone since they are saying it's my phone and NOT the network, when the issue is apparent with several different phones.
Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there. Your contracts are changing and I found this on SD. Credit to Chrscott22. The changes take place 9/9/11 and you have till 10/9/11 to cancel, but people have already started canceling.
"Administrative Charge Increase &Terms & Conditions Changes for Consumers
Effective 9/9/11, the Administrative Chargewill increase to $1.50 per line for customersthat receive the charge. For details, visitsprint.com/taxesandfees. In addition, theSprint consumer Terms (Ts&Cs) are changing. Please review them carefully at your local Sprint store or sprint.com/termsandconditions"
and per their terms and conditions:
"When You Don't Have To Pay An Early Termination Fee
You aren't responsible for paying an Early Termination Fee when terminating Services: (a) provided on a month-to-month basis; (b) consistent with our published trial period return policy; or (c) in response to a materially adverse change we make to the Agreement as described directly below.
Our Right To Change The Agreement & Your Related Rights
We may change any part of the Agreement at any time, including, but not limited to, rates, charges, how we calculate charges, or your terms of Service. We will provide you notice of material changes—and may provide you notice of non-material changes—in a manner consistent with this Agreement (see "Providing Notice To Each Other Under The Agreement" section). If a change we make to the Agreement is material and has a material adverse effect on Services under your Term Commitment, you may terminate each line of Service materially affected without incurring an Early Termination Fee only if you: (a) call us within 30 days after the effective date of the change; and (b) specifically advise us that you wish to cancel Services because of a material change to the Agreement that we have made. If you do not cancel Service within 30 days of the change, an Early Termination Fee will apply if you terminate Services before the end of any applicable Term Commitment. "
If you are tired of their service, have ****ty service, or just want to get out, call in and cancel. If you love them, please don't come here bashing others. I know Sprint is good in some areas, and after all they are the cheapest.

Yeah...I mean, the 2G signal is nearly everywhere and rock solid. The 3G signal is 'strong enough' in most places...the 4G is an embarrassing joke. I get it outside, barely...3/4 of a mile away from the tower, that is on a hill. I have never got 4G indoors. But I'm fine with that, I rarely need to download something big enough for me to say "gee I wish I had 4G" and there isn't wifi available at the same time. My 3G is usually nearly as fast as wifi for page loads and such (leaked eng radio FTW), but I think that also speaks poorly of the wifi performance of my E3D....
I always stay on the lookout. I would love the strength of VZW's signal....though I hang out on their towers (when necessary) via an alternate PRL and the speed doesn't really seem any faster unless it's a 'peak usage' time of day when Sprint is clogged....but even then it's not that much faster. I hear ATT/Tmobile have pretty fantastic 3G (3.5G, 3G+, kinda-4G) speeds, but, T-mobile doesn't have fantastic coverage and I doubt they have a free-roaming agreement with ATT which also doesn't have even a Sprint level of coverage...so that rules out T-mobile--not to mention they will cease to exist soon...which brings us to ATT and their complete ass-rape based service plans.
To sum it up I would like VZW's coverage, but it isn't that much better than Sprint and the data speeds are roughly on par. I would like T-mobile for the speed but the coverage is lacking and t-mobile won't exist soon....and ATT is ruled out automatically. (not to mention I have ATT for DSL and let me tell you--Worst. customer. service. ever...I somehow got shut off for paying my bill in full, early and it took hours to resolve)
and taking cost into consideration? Sprint wins, by far.
EDIT: Also, tiered data plans with unreasonably low caps? Pfffffft.

Data sucks donkey nuts where I live also, but like you said. The cost is something I can deal with too.
Yes you guys are right. The cost is what kept me with Sprint for so long (actually Sprint was very reliable in my area prior to May), but the towers around my home and work area, which is basically the same area, is screwed. It's been like this since May and they haven't done anything about it. They just make new tickets, tell me nothing is guaranteed and now blame it on my phone. They won't even listen to reason. Do you think an LG Optimus, 2 EVO4Gs, an EVO Shift and the EVO 3D all would have the same problem? Logically that's impossible, yet they tell me it's possible and blame it on my phones and the store is like "i see no problems" and wont replace. I've spent DAYS talking to these guys. Now they're telling me to go to HTC.
So I came across this information and now am switching to Verizon. True I'll have capped data, but only I use more than 2GBs (which is now impossible at 10kbps with Sprint even if I left it on all day and night). The rest of my family plan used like 400MB or 500MB. My problem is reliability. It's unnerving when not only are my friends enjoying true 4G speeds on Verizon, but my own work iPhone is leagues faster in the data department.
So anyways, I'm just passing along this info. A lot of people on SD have successfully ended their contracts with this.
Yooooooooooooooooooo

Damn I've been looking for something like this for a long while. I thought I was gonna end up paying the ETF for all of my lines, but this sounds like I'm out for free and I'll save around $700. What number did you call to get this done?
I'm definitely gone with Sprint's 'later' network, but I still love the EVO 3D. Such a beast of a phone on such a half-assed network. I hope I can find a good replacement.

So would you get to keep your Evo?
So let me make sure I have this straigt I call sprint say I want to cancel because of the material changes to our agreement, then I'm out ETF free right. Can anyone confirm this works?
Now how would this work if I went to Virgin or boost right after what would I have to do to make sure I keep my number?
I have nothing against sprint as far as postpaid carriers go, but the prepaids would cut my monthly bill in half which is a big deal.

You should just get a Virgin or Boost phone before dropping your postpaid contract and take it for a test run. I think you "may just find" that the cut cost isn't really worth the service (customer or phone/data) or lack there of.
If it wasn't for my discount and the EVO 3D, I'd have an easier time leaving. I get **** reception at home and work. Sadly, Sprint is the best price.

I like Sprint, but like a lot of others I switched for the price. But where I live and work I get nothing for signal. At work i can't make calls or text, let alone use data. At home.voice functions are good but again, no data. If I didn't have great WiFi I would have left in the first couple of days. I've called Sprint and they have told me that I have mediocre service so its not the phone. I actually had an emergency at work where the phone lines went down and couldn't make a phone call to 911. Luckily some of my employees have Verizon and we were able to call and save a man's life. So i think I'm going to get out and go back to Verizon. I know it costs more, but piece of mind is worth it to me.
So my question is, how would I keep my number if i switched? I've had this number for 10 years and don't want to lose it.
I have been with Sprint since 2004 and I agree that there are multiple issues. The only reason I have stayed on is the contract pricing.

Anyone get the sprint premier letter?

As stated, who here has gotten the sprint premier letter stating It's ending?
And how mad are you guys about it?
And who is leaving Sprint b/c of this?
3vo Free'd from desire
I did not get the letter. Kinda makes me mad however it's currently the best for unlimited data. Not leaving unless they cap or throttle it. If that's the case, I will go back with cricket. It would be cheaper, and throttled also.
I don't know if I will leave or not. I spoke to a CS rep on the phone and she said I will still get my upgrade from this year and be able to upgrade next year too. The letter said something completely different then what the woman on the phone said. I am upgrading as soon as I become eligible(November). I don't think I will leave over this because you can't get yearly upgrades anywhere else, but I do think that they might lose some customers over this. The crappy data speeds and no 4G expansion going on right now, I wouldn't be surprised if they lost some customers over this. Especially after they use their last updgrade.

Have not got the letter, but staying as long as I can keep my Simply Everything plan.

lost my premier in april with the first round of changes. I have two Sero premium lines; can't leave, it just can't be beat. If the new network changes take effect, sprint will actually have great 3G and better coverage, and that will make it an awesome network. if...
here's to hoping, cause with my plan I'm not going anywhere, and this (data) $hit has got to get better.

Every time I've really wanted an upgrade, I've gotten one, (when not eligible) , after a single phone call to Sprint. You just gotta "work it" a little bit, and they'll do it. Sprint is NOT in the position to be losing customers over the issue. Win for us: it's definitely a "flipper's market" right now for Sprint customers.
(I even BRIEFLY considered asking for another full-upgrade when I got the EpicTouch a few days ago, but my brain just wouldn't let me say so much bull**** to another human being... (considering I just got a premature upgrade for my EVO3D)......
But, it did let me say just enough to get the add-a-line price of the phone knocked down from $199 to $75, lol.
<<bringing it since 2010>>
got it yesterday. between this, fees slowly going up and the fact there 3g network in my area is pure crap im headed to verizon.
Im to the point where ill pay more for capped data but actually be on a reliable network something sprint is not in my area.

Wish I could leave, but around here verizon is even worse. They are not actually even able to take customers. Every cell provider sucks around here except US Cellular, but they are only good around here, and suck everywhere else. So I just change my prl and roam on US Cellular, best of both worlds, just have to watch the roaming usage, lol...........
It does suck, but at least you get one more Gold Upgrade in 2012. Assuming you upgrade on or before 10/01/2012. I had them push up my upgrade to this month so I could order my 3D now, instead of waiting for 10/01/11. This is on their website.

Leaving because a company is trying to do more to make money and boost its pretty crappy 3G speeds by eliminating stuff like the premier program is a stupid reason to leave. No other carrier will offer you that either.
Sprint will not care if the few of you getting-mad-becasue-you-don't-get-premier-perks decide to up and leave. You were probably the reason they eliminated it, that and insurance fraud.
Nothing Sprint does short of raising prices to match or become higher than VZW will ever make me leave.

Ummm well I've had Sprint for 8 years never did any sort of fraud or insurance scheme, buy them there are the bad seeds hahaha, And ATT AND VZW is offering early upgrades tho I think It's for iPhone users only tho.
Basically Sprint is going against everything they've said so far, it'll be time when they take out unlimited data as Dan Hesse said himself It's possible. And believe me the horrible 3G speeds I definitely see it as Iive in NYC and speeds is HORRIBLE!!!!

Just got mine yesterday. I have a upgrade in June 2012 to use under December 2012. Truly looking like I'll be getting what ever Nexus that Sprint has available so it will last for twenty months.

Got mines the other day. Read it and through it in the trash. I dont care about any of that. If I'm not able to get my upgrade, I just purchase full price if I want it that bad (know I'm going to have to do if the Nexus Prime comes to us lol). Simple as that. Signal is not the greatest in my neighborhood, but once out, I'm good to go. Have a Airave in the home and its serving its purpose so far. Nothing for me to "leave" over. But thats my own personal feelings.

Sprint is going in the wrong direction

This is just a rant, so sorry if I'm off-topic, but this is just getting to be too much.
I'm a store manager for a multi-carrier cell phone store, nationwide, with stores in the thousands. I won't name names for privacy (and job security) reasons, so yeah. Sprint is just pissing me off lately with everything they've been doing.
First, the OTA ICS update that has been held back for Gods know why, with no official word on anything, and HTC sitting back and just watching, not helping out or releasing source code. They have the gall to release the 3D on Virgin WITH ICS, for half the price of the 3D (unactivated), with better plan pricing and the same coverage for the most part, including 4G, if you can even call it that. Sprint, get off your ass and get us ICS already, the firmware that comes stock on these phones is OVER A YEAR OLD, Jeebus.
Secondly, the way they're dealing with the GSIII fiasco. I have people coming in every day since the 21st, asking where their phone is. Sprint hasn't even contacted almost any of their own preorder customers to let them know about the delay, so anybody not on a forum like this has no idea. Not only that, but they won't release a new date or an explanation, nothing, just a "TBD" is all I have to go by on my system. This is how they treat customers shelling out $200-$250 for a phone? Sure, I don't expect to know everything, but AT LEAST have the corporate courtesy to let your customers 1) know about the delay, and 2) the WHY, even a simple "Samsung can't produce enough phones to keep up with demand" would be fine, but they opted for nothing instead.
Lastly, their pathetic data network. I mean absolutely pathetic. I sell these phones daily, and have to uptalk them as my job, but it's getting harder and harder when I have to DEMO my 3D to customers and can't even load a jpeg at work. I have 2 bars of 3G, on Verizon that gets my associate 1200 kb/s, for me I get 0.7 kb/s. Seriously? Their 4G network? Useless. There's ONE tower in my entire county, a quarter mile from my apartment, and I can't get signal indoors. Even when I'm outside, I'll get up to and including 3 bars, and even then it's barely usable. Then they go and switch to LTE, leaving the rest of us in the dust. I switched years ago just so I could get 4G when it rolled out, and look at where that got us. Now we have another couple years at least until there' LTE where I'm at. It's just disgusting, how Sprint is running things these days. It's not like they're broke, after doubling their upgrade fee, charging every smartphone customer the $10 4G charge, and getting more new customers here than either other carrier (for my store at least), they have the income.
I will give them this, their customer service is by far the best to work with. I've literally been asked if I have any idea what I'm doing while calling AT&T, and been hung up on several times by Verizon, but Sprint has never done me wrong. Any problem I've had they've been able to solve, so kudos. Now get to making your customers happy instead of your reps, unless you want to lose them both to a competitor with better coverage/faster data/faster updates.
</rant>
Excellent thread,
This will open a lot of eyes. I plan to get rid of sprint soon. They are the worst carrier out of them all. Their service is just horrible. I can't imagine your position on convincing customers to go with sprint.
the thing i dont get is why wont they allow good clean esns that have wimax like the shift or the normal 3d on their boost prepaid network. i dont buy their oh it picks up a different signal garbage that they try to say since we all know that they will in fact work just fine with a pri/prl update. I understand the bad esns but let the people use their own damn phone that they have that evo design sux...just my opinion
They have an excellent plan in place. But as of now it's only that, a plan. A 3 to 5 year plan, at that. So maybe in two and a half contracts I'll come back, but I'm switching to a Verizon dealer line the day the GSIII comes out.
I tell guests that their network will only get better with time, and that they're putting a lot of effort and money towards it. Not complete BS, but over the last year I haven't seen jack for this whole county. Once their "Network Vision" is complete (check my previous posts about that for a detailed explanation of what they're planning) then they'll have coverage and speeds as good as, if not (don't stone me) better than Big Red. For now though, even my friend with T-Mobile has ludacris speeds compared to what I'm getting. Hell, when I roam (which apparently isn't onto Verizon, I didn't know ) with 1X I get over double the speeds of Sprint's "3G"
Yeah. I'm not a fan of switching carriers, but I am seriously considering jumping on Verizon. My phone has become nearly unusable. Can't run Google Play, wallpaper apps, news feeds, etc. Data is just too slow. Meanwhile, I'm paying just as much as the guy with 4G service, in fact, I'm on the same plan. That should be illegal. I can't think of many industries where that is allowed to happen. That would be like if a cable provider charged everyone the same, but some people got three channels, while some got 600 all in hd. People wouldn't stand for it.
So I guess the question is, what do I want more? Verizon where I'm afraid of going over my limit but have great data, or Sprint where my data is complete garbage but I can use it all I want. Haven't figured out an answer to that question yet.

I literally just spent 7 minutes downloading XDA (3 MB) to reply to this. That was with 5-6 bars of 3G (outside on lunch from work now). I rest my case.
Honestly, when somebody on Verizon tells me they want to switch to sprint, I tell them "unlimited data is nice, but not when your data is slower than AOL in 1998." Verizon might be more expensive, by maybe $10-20, but it's oh so worth it.

The reason they're not giving you information about the GSIII is because Samsung is having problems getting them to Sprint... Sprint can't tell when they're going to get them, as they're waiting for them as well... I've read press releases that they're looking to get the 32gb a week after the 16gb. Maybe just do a quick search online?

Half the people I sell phones to, including GS III preorders, know as much about phones and online forums as I do about the Jersey Shore. The fast of the matter is Sprint dropped the ball and left everybody in the dark. Unless you deliberately went looking for info, you would never know. Courtesy is all I ask, at least tell the people who gave you money what's going on.

Never assume anything. If I just assumed people wanting a smartphone knew about the extra data fee and didn't bother telling them, for example, I wouldn't still be a store manager. Only thing you can assume is that the guest knows nothing, so you tell them what they need to know. That way, everybody you help is on the same page, knows the same stuff, and is well informed on what affects them.
Sprint could take a page from that. Don't assume your preorder customers are going to stumble upon your Facebook post, or that article about your press release, or even call up customer service. Assume they live under a rock and it's your responsibility to inform them of any changes in the order process.
Well that small thought escalated quickly... you get the point. :

Troll harder, bro.
If something isn't what it should be, if service is less than what is stated, if I'm paying for something that cannot be used as advertized, why would I stay quiet about it? Lemme learn you somethin', boy. The squeeky wheel gets the oil. If nobody makes a complaint, if nobody rises up, nothing will ever change. This applies to more than just a cell phone company, obviously, e.g. everything from the American Revolution to the current battle for gay rights. Nothing will change unless we act and do something about it, which is exactly what I'm doing.
I've already sent letters to both Sprint and HTC about all this, HTC more about the bootloaders and source code. I'm also switching to Verizon until Sprint gets their act together. I'm here to let people know that there are other options besides rolling over and offering to be Sprint's 'bottom' while they take your money. I'm here to tell you that it is not only the customer who is pissed at them, but the CSRs, the Sales Associates and even the SMs like me, who are at their wit's end with all the cloak and dagger secrecy about fraking everything.
Anywho, yeah. Sprint has my full support in the future, and I'll gladly come back when they are better, but I can't deal with not having good service while it's my job to sell these things.
Are there any other Sprint employees or people in Sprint sales positions (Best Buy, Target Mobile, Radioshack, etc.) who feel the same way as I do? Chime in here, let these people know what you think.
You just made me hate sprint even more than I already do.
Thanks!

Where else you gonna get unlimited? Sure you get better data speed with other companies, if i was them id make it as fast as i could. Cause when you jump over your 2-3gb limit id just rape the sht out of you with overrage fees just like they do. As much as i dont like sprint, i wont be going anywhere until they get rid of their unlimited plans.

I just checked my last 6 months of usage. Due to Sprint's speeds, I've never once used more than a gig. Most months were under 400 MB. I stick to wifi at home, and don't even bother downloading anything until I'm home.
I'd S so many Ds for the ABILITY to use 2 to 3 gigs a month... just saying. Like I said before, unlimited is nice, but it's useless if it's so slow that it becomes unusable.
EDIT: Also, they have no plans to remove unlimited, they have quadruple the bandwidth of every other carrier for data, which is how they can still offer unlimited. Again, good plan in place, but words are just words.
The above is why I got the Virgin Mobile rebranded version. At $35 a month, I'll break even for the $300 the phone cost in 9 months. And at that price I can accept less that great data speeds.

Making the switch, my journey.

So, this is just a write up of my switch from Verizon to Straight Talk and (Probably) everything in between.
So basically, this starts out with me being on Verizon for 9 years, ever since I owned my first flip phone. Although, every year it became harder and harder to stay on Verizon, especially with Nexus's devices coming out and basically all the "Cool" phones on the other carriers and Verizon being more and more money hungry and caring less and less about the customer. Sadly, Verizon just had the best coverage and moderate prices (Grandfathered onto Unlimited data). No one could match what I had.
I stuck it out with Verizon, although I hated everything about the company, there was no easy or cheap alternative that could match Verizon's data coverage (Or so I thought), but finally I got my break. Well not that easily, I spent all of the weekend thinking about different options to take with my plan since it will be ending in December (I'm also bundled my parents plan and need to get off of it so it's either try my luck with Verizon or find an alternative and finally get away from this hell hole of a company). I even took a drive to T-Mobile to test out a Nexus 4, and ended at Best Buy seeing what they would give me for my phone ($250 for anyone who is wandering, which isn't bad since the best I could find on Swappa/Craigslist was around $300) to see if I could buy one straight up. Although this sounded like a great idea, I could never go to T-Mobile with their spotty coverage, and AT&T is just as bad as Verizon with the same prices, I had no other options in terms of a GSM carrier.
Although the Nexus 4 is one hell of a device, I just couldn't force myself to get it with the Nexus 5 coming out so soon. So I did some looking and finally found out that it's actually pretty simple to get a Verizon phone onto another network (Since the Verizon Note 2 has LTE/CDMA/GSM bands). So I pulled the trigger and bought a Straight Talk SIM card and an unlimited everything plan for $55. This was a small price to pay to test if there was a cheap and unlimited alternative to Verizon that was able to somewhat rival their coverage. Again, this was more of a test than anything for me to see if I am going to stick it out with Verizon or move to a prepaid carrier.
I ended up going with the AT&T SIM as T-Mobile get's almost no reception in my area (As proven by my friends who have them and never have service) and got my SIM card in the mail yesterday. I was on CM10.2 for the Verizon Note 2 and was ready to just stick this card in and go, of course it wouldn't be as simple as just putting the card in and going right? Well yea, it did take a little messing around. First thing first, I put the card in, activated it per usual, and was actually able to get data, calling and I could receive texts. I couldn't on the other hand, send texts and didn't have signal bars in the status bar. So I played around with APN's for a while and couldn't get it to work. So I tried moving to a Touchwiz ROM. Of course the first I tried was just a stock rooted and low and behold Verizon blocks you from using SIM cards that aren't from Verizon (Did I mention how much I hate Verizon?).
I then went on to try Beans ROM and low and behold, no setup required, turned it on and it was good to go. Everything working, I had a smile from ear to ear just having this actually work. I never knew from the beginning if Straight Talk or even another SIM would work in my phone so everything was a crap shoot until it would finally work, but was lucky enough to have it work! Although, I could have stopped there, I just can't stand Touchwiz so I decided today I would give CM another shot. Still didn't work even when messing with APN's so I thought what the hell, let's try something crazy. Backed up my current ROM and tried flashing the toLTE CM10.2 ROM and of course it failed since my phone isn't the N7105. So I dug a little deeper, and copied the updater-script from the Verizon version to the toLTE version and it installed! So, I reboot it and think, man, I'm going to get stuck in a boot loop, but maybe I was just lucky today as I made it straight to my home screen, even better, I had full data, signal bars working, and was able to send texts. I thought this was amazing. I literally had my cake and was able to eat it too, until I tried GPS. Which of course didn't work. Another hour of trying crap and finally tried just copying the GPS.conf from the Verizon CM ROM over and low and behold, I had GPS! So I now have a perfectly working phone, on CM10.2 using a Straight Talk SIM/contract, using AT&T's network, all for $45 a month.
I'm sure a lot of you will read this and want your 5/10/15 minutes back, but this is just for the few that want to break away but don't have the hundreds of dollars to switch to different carriers, different phones, different plans just to find one that works. I was in this boat, and know how it feels. I have been using this phone for roughly a day and am going to make sure I have service everywhere I need it before making my final decision (So far work and home have full H+), but if all goes well will be finally ditching Verizon at the end of the year and getting myself a Nexus that I won't have to worry about having slow updates because my carrier is lazy. At this point, I couldn't be happier and hopefully get some of you guys to at least give it a shot like I did.
Please post a reply or DM me if you have any questions on my process, I will be more than happy to help out as much as I can!
So for anyone who doesn't believe me or those of you "Pics or it didn't happen!". This is from my phone, using the Straight Talk SIM. Data speeds are no where near Verizon's nor is the ping but I am on WiFi 90% of the time anyways so just having a data correction is my main priority.

Love it, I've been thinking about escape for some time so I appreciate the write up. The Note 2 is the best phone I've ever used, but I've debated whether to sign my life away with Verizon again for the 3.
I tried the T-Mobile route and the coverage was so abysmal I scurried back. This gives me hope for another option. What sort of data speeds do you get when needed?
Thank you for taking the time to write that up. I was thinking about doing the same thing last year but was worried about the decrease in data. I've read in numerous threads that data just plain sucks with Straight Talk.
Could you give us an update periodically on this? Thnx!!!

No thanks. Been doing 30gb a month with Verizon. Looks like I'd be SOL with straight talk.

This was more just for a general prepaid plan. I just so happened to pick Straight Talk. So far up to 6.7 GB of usage with no issue.

Good lord you guys are data hogs!
How's the voice coverage? my 4 person family plan with only 6GB between the 4 of us is $237 a month. 4 * $45 would be a big improvement and of course, I could stop yelling at the kids for watching youtube all the time.

As I said, for me I was able to get data/voice everywhere that I went, but remember I was using AT&T's towers so it may change depending on the carrier you go with. My month is coming to an end and I have about 2 more months before I have to finally decide, but it is looking like a go as of right now.

Mike,
Thnx for the continued updates. Come back when it's go time and let us know if you permanently made the shift.
I've been considering doing exactly this, its great to know that our handsets will work with these SIMs. Did you port your number over or chose a new one? I'm curious as to how hard it would be to do so.

I personally had to get a new number as I didn't make the full switch yet but I know that Straight Talk does give you the option to port a number over.

Porting my number to T-Mobile was incredibly easy. I'm sure it's just as easy as Straight Talk. During the setup you're asked whether you want to get a new number or port your current number. That's it. Took only a few hours for everything to fully switch over to my Nexus 4 and I was on my way. I have one bill left for Verizon with my ETF and then I'll be completely free from them.
fascinating
This is really great to see. I was thinking about doing the same thing but I am worried about coverage issues.
I was in a similar situation, I have had Verizon for years on my family unlimited plan and I needed to get off of my parents' plan, so I gave Sprint a shot because I have a friend that has it. What he didn't tell me was that he has always had abysmal service everywhere, a point I discovered when I lost service repeatedly just walking across the house. Calls would drop out and I'd be lucky to even be able to send a text message in most places at work.
I abandoned ship pretty quickly and went crying back to Verizon. Unfortunately there was no way to recover unlimited data, but I checked and I only used an average of ~1.5GB a month anyway. Went in on the 4GB plan with my brother.
Verizon really doesn't care about their customers, and that goes all the way from corporate to the stores. Their customer service is pitiful. I missed one payment and they put my account on cash only for SIX MONTHS. That means I literally have to go into the store and feed a machine cash for 6 months or I can't pay my bill. Not online, not over the mobile app, not even over the phone. If you call and ask them about it they treat you like you're some second class citizen that isn't worth their time, or they just spout off how they have no control over anything.
I've also noticed over the years that the employees in the store have less and less power over anything. They can do almost nothing for your account aside from activate your new phone. You have to call customer service to do anything. If they didn't have the best coverage around by leaps and bounds, I'd never use them again.
