I want to convert some anime with .ass subtitles for playback on the SGS2, so I'll have to hardcode them into the video, but what are the best settings for the best quality? H264 or Xvid? Mkv, mp4 or avi? I'm using StaxRip, but I'm willing to use other converters.
Afaik subtitles don't have to be hardsubs. Softsubs should work on stock player, or at least with other players such as mvideoplayer, diceplayer, vplayer, rockplayer...
But I've read they don't show through HDMI when hardware decoding is used.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Those subs come with all the fancy stuff, karaoke, typsetting you know. I don't if they work because my SGS2 is still on its way to get here, but because I'm going on holiday very soon, I'd like to have my video's pre-encoded so that I can drop them onto my phone and play.
Yea, the advanced styled ones don't work. The fancy anime karaoke subs are most of the time baked into the video. The fancy effects are nearly impossible to do real-time.
Convert them to srt and they'll work, but that'll surely ef up your subtitles overall. Just bake them into the videos with some nice tools available at video-help.com (amazing site).
I was originally planning to hardcode them into the video, but I want to know which settings, what is the best container and format? I don't want the video to be effed up. At what settings do you usually encode video's or movies for the SGS2?
Can anybody help me?
Asking witch one is best is not easy to answer.
I encode my HD music videos to 720p mkv , high-profile 3.1 x264 or H264 (same thing i think).
For reference SGS1 and 2 , can play "high profile x264(mkv) [email protected] fps" , SGS2 can play MP4 [email protected] (had no success with 1080p x264).
Decoding HD video does take more processing power and eats thro battery faster. If you want max battery encode in "baseline MP4" and aim for 800x450 or under depending on aspect ratio.
Encoding with "high-profile x264 (mkv)" will result in lower file size and much better video quality then "baseline (mp4). SO its up to you if you want max battery or max quality.
Most anime and movies from Internet will play without any transcoding mkv, xvid, avi, divx.
If you get free 3rd party video player from market my personal favorite "mVideoPlayer" it uses SGS2 hardware samsung codecs to play media also support for
Subtitle Support: srt, ssa, ass, sub/idx, mpl, smi, txt, sub, sami.

SGS2 has best media compatibility of all the phones but it still can't match versatility of PC.
Some badly encoded videos with none standard settings custom compression matrix ect. will not play or play with artifacts, in that case try one of the software players that don't use samsung codecs "Moboplayer" or "Diceplayer"
As for encoding/transcoding videos i use "MeGUI" but its not noob friendly. There are several noob friendlier converters but i found them lacking.
Anyway don't waist time transcoding if you don't have SGS2 , wait untill you get it test your media and only then transcode

Thank you for your explanation! Say, if I encode one video with high-profile x264, [email protected],976fps, it would work on the SGS2? Is it better to have mp4 or mkv with this? Can I send you two of the same videos for you to try on the SGS2?

SGS2 will play that easy. If you encode with above settings it doesn't matter if its mp4 or mkv as those are only containers your encode will be "high-profile x264".
Benefit of mkv is you can integrate soft subtitles that can be turned on or off. If subtitles are hardcoded then there is no noticeable difference.

Uploading now as we speak, ~10 minutes left on this crappy connection. The videos are the same, but one is in mp4 and the other mkv. Just want to make sure which one to go for. By the way, is there a noticable difference in quality if I encode in 1280x720? I can easily encode this, so if you want I can provide one in 720p too?
I've played different formats with SGS1 and SGS2 with different types of encoding and just basic divx, there seems to be barely any difference in power consumption, probably the HW decoding is very efficient that it barely adds power usage.

I think I will go with mkv then. Thank you very much for testing, now I can encode episodes without worrying if they work/don't work. Thank you!
Btw, the audio in the video isn't out of sync, is it? I've tested a 640x360 mkv file on my Galaxy Ace, but the video stutters and is out of sync. This isn't happening on the SGS2, right? Just want to make sure.

As you know our phone isn't really equipped to play most videos we throw at it, so what video bitrate/resolution/framerate have you found to work the best on the Optimus one?
And please mention which software you use to convert.
THIS IS IT....
xvid codec 640*360 max with ~1Mbps and mp3/aac audio are played without conversion...(your Sitcom episodes)...
Havent TRIED h264 or DIVx playback ...on the box though it does say DIVX resolution upto 320*240..
files with ogg video(theora) and ac3 audio dont play without conversion
No 720p,1080p/i playback possible...FOR ALL HIGHER resolutions/bitrate u need to convert ..i have a personal converter favourite....hassle free and its just a GUI for the wonderful FFMPEG program...herehttp://miksoft.net
Really? Mine struggles to play 624x352 24fps .mkv files. Unwatchable.
Which video player do you use on your phone?
I use Handbrake for all my videos. Starting from the "iPhone Legacy" profile, here are the settings I use to create H.264 files:
- Video: 480 x 320, H.264 (x264) codec, 768 Kbps bitrate, FPS same as source
- Audio: AAC (faac), stereo, 44.1 KHz, 128 kbps bitrate.
Image and sound are crystal clear, but of course, you can find your own favorite settings (just don't mess with the advanced settings, our CPU only handles the basic H.264 profile).
I use RockPlayer (the free version) for playback, because it can render .srt subtitles.

I was wondering the same thing! *.mkv wasn't really a good experience on p500
Hey
I'm no expert with these things but I'm trying to get a mkv 720p file I downloaded to work on my Sony ericsson Arc. Rather than re-encode (takes ages!) I use a program called gotsent, that repackages the MKV into an MP4 that the phone can then play. Sometimes this works, and phones plays the file flawlessly, other times it fails to play. I use VLC media properties to get the information about the files. Two files the phone plays flawlessly. One already converted as it's a HD mp4 trailer from the web and the other a SD MKV that I
converted.
Fast Furious Trailer works
Stream 0
Type Video
Code: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part10) (avc1)
Resolution: 1280x720
Frame Rate: 23.976023
Stream 1
Type Audio
Codec: MPEG AAc Audio (mp4a)
Channels: Stereo
Sample rate: 48000Hz
SD MKV FILM COVERTED TO MP4 works
Stream 0
Type Audio
Codec: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)
Channels: Stereo
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
AAC extension: SBR
Stream 1
Type: Video
Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (Part 10) (avc1)
Resolution 672.352
Frame rate: 25
Now the one that doesn't work after converting,
720p HD Mkv converted to mp4 using GotSent
Stream 0
Type Audio
Codec: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)
Channels: stereo
Sample rate: 48000Hz
Stream 1
Type Video
Codec H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)
Resolution 1280x720
Frame rate 23.9767023.
Does anybody know what is going wrong and why the third file refuses to play?
Thanks for any help.
Dan
Try MoboPlayer, it's i thought free on the market. ;0
+1 for Mobo player
Thanks for the advise. However, I have tried Moboplayer, QQplayer, rock player. I find that these will all play HD files that the preinstalled player does well. However, MKV, convter MKV to MP4, the player will render using cpu only, and thus stutter.
I really belittled by how two files, looking identical in their properties, one if playing fine and the other is failing.
It is really an important feature for me, as the HDMI port and HD files will make an ideal media player/network streamer.
Cheers
As far as 720p/1080p mkv's are concerned only Samsung galaxy s1(720p) n s2 n their top end wave models can do it!

Hi. I do know this and willing to sell my Arc to get a Galaxy s2 but the Arc is capable of hardware accelarated mp4 video.
Please read my original post. I'm not trying to play Mkv's on the device, but MP4, which has been converted from MKV H264. Some files play others will not, but their properties look identical.

Can you post the full media info for the offending file?
Look especially for Format Profile and Format settings, ReFrames. If either of these are too high that may be your problem. Format Profile should be [email protected] or lower and ReFrames should be 8 or less (I think). Even PS3 and some other devices will not play videos outside those parameters. The professionally encoded stuff will work 'cause they know this and make it work on all devices. "Other" encoders usually try to do the same but some ignore it. You can change the Profile Level without reencoding but not the ReFrames.
The only thing I can think of other than that is if the bitrate is much higher than the one that works.

What's your experience with HD video on S1 tablet? Any ideas, how to improve it?
Try mx video player, free from market.
Works great for me!
I found the same issue. A 1080p mkv that plays smoothly on my SGS2 phone stutters awfully on the tablet. I've tried all the suggested video players without success. I'm very disappointed. I hope it's just a SW issue that gets resolved in an update.

Thanks, will try it, but I doubt it's any good... I guess it's a codec or some 3.2 quirk...
EDIT:
Tried it and no, it did not help- same choppy video with no sound.
I'm wondering is it supposed to play AC3 sound out of a box?
EDIT2:
In mx player there are some options that I can choose: h/w decoder, s/w docoder and s/w decoder (fast).
When I choose software decoder, then I have sound for like 10 seconds And the picture looks *little bit* less choppier...
I Checked it good reviews and it looks good just have to wait to give me my tablet
It is the tegra 2 chips problem. It can't play High @L5.0 Profile Video..Cause i was P990 user.
You have to convert your video to Divx / XviD MP4.
AVC is no suitable to play higher than 3000kbps
Had the same issues... hence why I returned my tablet a long time ago...
Concerning the HD movies I've come to a conclusion, that it is practically impossible to watch them on the S1 tablet, since the majority of 720p are over 4GB and 1080p movies over 8GB, you really have no way of getting them inside your device.
You cannot store a file that's larger than 4GB on the S1's internal USB storage and Android can only read FAT32 formatted external memory (SD Cards or USB storage devices), so you cannot place your HD movies there either, because of the 4GB limitation of FAT32 file system. (I have tried to format SD card to exFAT, NTFS, Ext2, Ext3 and Ext4, but Android just won't recognize media formatted this way; Actually I'm very confused why it didn't recognize native linux Ext* partitions?).
And since we don't have root, we cannot mount external samba shares either...
So you're stuck and can only watch media with size under 4GB and with lower video bitrates.
***
Is my conclusion correct or is there currently a way to watch HD movies with file size over 4GB on S1?
I've downloaded blu-ray rips at under 4gb and watched them on my 42" tv, and they looked great. Now obviously they're not going to be as good as watching the disc itself, but if they're good enough to watch on a 42" tv and still look like good quality HD, then I'm sure they're good enough to watch on a 9" screen! You really shouldn't need anything above the 720p version - the Sony Tablet's screen is a lower resolution than 1920*1080 so couldn't display a 1080p file to it's full potential anyway.
Hope this helps!
Agreed.
Just that... my entire movie collection is at least 720p Just have to re-encode then I guess.
Guitardave, I totally take your point about the screen not being capable of displaying the full res of 1080p. But for me that's kinda like saying theres no point watching Bluray on an HD Ready (720p) tv because it can't display the full resolution. I don't really want to spend hours transcoding films to watch on the tablet when I go away, and be limited to just watching those which have been done.
It's just a shame, that's all. I expect the next model will cope without any problems. This aside, i'm still impressed and happy with he tab overall.
Just as an experiment, it would be good to download a movie trailer in 720p, and then the same trailer in 1080p, and see if you can actually see any difference in picture quality. I doubt it personally, on such a small screen (as opposed to, say, a 50" tv). Better still, do a blind test - get someone else to start the clips playing, and you make a call as to which is which...
Of course you won't notice the difference on such a small screen, but that's not the point.
The point is, you have to waste time re-encoding your movies to watch them on the go
I've got 720p mkv files to play on mx video player. Just had to switch the audio to sw. Video can be done with hardware no problem Looks amazing

I am able to play full 1080p HD video just fine on my sony tablet s. Using the stock video player too. No problem. No lag, no choppy frame-rate. You just need to convert your video to the right codec for tablet. If you go to PlayStation store from your PS3 and download free 1080P trailers and transfer it to your tablet you'll see that it plays perfect! To use the same codec that Sony uses for their HD video trailers in the PlayStation store, I use AVS video converter to convert my video for my sony tablet. And it works flawlessly. But most of my video are already that format so I never really have to convert all of them.
Just load any video in AVS video Converter, select convert to MP4, Under profile select for "tablet", select 1080p resolution(1920x1080p), select mp4 iso v.2-H.264/AVC codec. set the bitrate higher if you want better video qaulity and click convert.
Now you'll have a 1080p video that is perfectly optimized for your Sony tablet.
Thanks, but it still does not solve my main problems. Wasted time on video conversion and the 4GB file limit
Well I guess you would have to slit the movie into two parts if it's a long movie. The codec I use in the method above also compress the file size of the video. I have a 6 minute full 1080p HD video that looks great and it's only around 150MB, so a 1 hour movie would be around 1.5GB? I'm not that great with math. But anyways, it keeps the quality good while lowering the file size, which is good.
I know video conversion can be a waste of time but it's better than waiting for an update or a proper solution. We'll just have to deal with what we can do right now.
I used vplayer for my hd videos. Works well but sound goes out of sync when I adjust volume. I havve to restart vplayer.
try dice player I tried 720p video and it works with my tablet S make sure download tegra2 plugin
Would any Prime owner play a 1080p MKV through HDMI to your HDTV, and confirm that it is indeed 1080p and not downscaled 720p?
Assuming that it is playing in software mode, can the Teg3 play a 1080p high profile video smoothly?
Lastly, again assuming SW mode, do you get 5.1 audio (AC3 or DTS) through HDMI?
To test for 5.1 audio, please play both the attached 5.1 WMA and AC3 clips through HDMI. The test clip will say "front left", "center", "front right", etc through only the respective channel. You should also hear an audible sound at the end through your subwoofer (assuming your setup has one).
TIA.

the prime can play the 1080p profile you mentioned with no problem. as far as HDMI goes, not sure.
can not answer the question about HDMI. But perhaps help when it comes to audio and video formats.
From swedroid.se test, and translated into English.
"As is the case for the music player, Asus do net onclude their own video players, but instead uses default player that comes with Android. This is a rather rowdy players who only manages one of our clip in the table below (# 9), but without any sound, because support for AC3 missing."

Have anybody a 1080p High Profile Sample with 5.1 sound? I can't play my file with dice placer or bs player...
/edit: A reboot solved my problem. 1080p is playing very fine.

Here's a tip of a program i think is good.
Media Info is a program that I using on my windows 7 computer. Really easy program to use. Just install and then all you have to do is to right click on the media file to get the info.

Thanks for the responses. However, I'm mainly interested in HDMI output. The reason is that most HC tablets thus far can only mirror what's on their 1280x800 screen through HDMI out. Hence, they can only do 720p (the status bar portion is cut off). I'm curious if the Prime has worked around this issue. It hasn't been a big deal thus far, since most Android tabs are still Tegra 2, which can't really play 1080p anyway.
The other issue is 5.1 audio through HDMI. Every HC tablet to date can only output stereo sound.

What I have understand and what I have read from a swedish Asus person that have answer some questions are the following.
Connected with Hdmi to external monitor and when you are on your homescreen/apps/games it will mirror that and you get 720p just like you have said.
When starting a movie that's is 1080p the Prime screen goes off and it will output the movie in 1080p to the external screen.
Also want to know if it can output 5.1 sound. Can't someone that have gotten their Prime test and see.

I played a couple 1080p music videos over HDMI and my TV reports they display in 1080p. They play smooth and look great. Of course they look fine when shown on the prime display as well, just not full resolution. I used the free mxplayer app from the market.
Only problem is I only get one audio channel thru HDMI no matter if I use the TV internal speakers or my amp (PS3, Dish, etc all work fine thru HDMI, just Prime or micro hdmi cable issue). One channel sounds good, other is silent. No matter what I try. If I connect headphones then the HDMI video continues and I get stereo sound in the headphones. But to connect this to my amp requires changing how everything is setup. I would like to find a solution to the single audio channel over hdmi.
It may be an issue with the software player. Try an MP4 clip with stereo AAC with the built-in video player and see if you can't at least get stereo sound through HDMI.
You can try any one of the clips from the link below. Suggest either the 1080p_max or the 1080p_master clip.

Yep. Video feed on the prime stops and it beams the 1080p feed to the external display.

Yup. Using HW decode it will not display video on both.
Sent from my Desire HD
The best player for smooth video and dual channel audio would be MX player. Select HW decoding for video and software decoding for audio. That seems to play the most.
Tried some of those mediafire videos. The video plays fine in 1080p, still only one audio channel over hdmi. Tried default player and half a dozen other players.
I played some Netflix video and I'm pretty impressed with the quality its outputting compared to my Acer a100. And no lag.

@MrGiggles, or anyone with a surround sound HT setup
Would you play this attached test 5.1 WMA clip through HDMI and verify that you are getting actual 5.1? The test clip will say "front left", "center", "front right", etc through only the respective channel. You should also hear an audible sound at the end through your subwoofer (assuming your setup has one).
Will Test right now.
it did not display 5.1 but it DID go to each channel and I could hear it. I do not know if my amp is up scaling the audio or if it is actually doing it from HDMI but it did come all 5 and sub
My thus far flawless prime is now artifacting heavily from the HDMI output. It will also freeze and reboot if I accidentally turn it to portrait with HDMI connected.

One of the biggest things I do on my Prime is watching Anime. And I noticed that lately some of my newest anime shows won't work correctly. Most of them are tagged with a 720p 10bit in the filename. I know the prime works with 1080p so why wouldn't this work? I dug around and found out that its like a high profile 720p and on most computers the screen will come up green and if so just update your player (I use cccp) and it should work. So it seems like its software and not really a hardware limit. Has anyone found a app that handles 10bit files? I tried dice/stock/bplayer/mkplayer and they all kinda work slowly or have studders but play my 1080p or 720p 8bit ones fine.
Yeah you need a media player that can decode Hi10p videos to have them play without artifacts. I'll poke around and see if I can find any that do. I have some Hi10p files I'd like to play as well.
---------- Post added at 11:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:38 AM ----------
Apparently MoboPlayer can decode Hi10P videos but only in software, so I'm not sure how the Prime will handle it. I can't test it out till I get my tablet tomorrow but let me know if you do. I've got a 1080p Hi10P copy of Redline I am eager to see on that gorgeous display!
Cool thanks a bunch ill test it too when I get home. I deleted the 10bit files last night. And with the quad cores I doubt it wouldn't work I played the same file flawlessly last night on my dell 3ghz dual core with crappy on board video and 4 gb ram. I can't see why the prime couldn't handle it.
Which one is it?

It's 4 cores but clocked at max 1.3 Ghz and also ARM not x86. Still, I think they should be enough to decode anything. At least they have NEON extention, which should be used for decoding by software players (Tegra2 didn't have it).

The first one I believe. That is the one I saw linked to on another forum anyway.
SOunds like you need Dice Player, hands down the best video player for any Android device it supports.
Video playback demo video - Dice Player playing everything:
I tried Dice Player Trial and it didn't play the files correctly am I missing something? does the pay version offer better support for 10bit?
Try BS Player.... I tried DICE, MX and Mobo, Vplayer, etc last night and BS was the only one that would play everything (even 1080p) smoothly, even over a network connection from my server. If you use it over a network, go into BS Player and use its LAN mode. For local playing content, change the decoder to the system hardware decoder and not the BSEngine hardware decoder. Works so much better.

Can you post a link to one of these 10bit files? or a sample of one?
I've tried almost every player and I've conceded to the fact that one doesn't exist. 10bit encoding has only just begun to be supported within the last few months within the big codec packs and such. But I have faith that eventually we will see support for it on the android platform.
I don't know of any device that can play 10 bit h.264 high profile in hardware. This is the newest type of encoding and it delivers even higher quality at a lower file size. However, it requires serious horsepower to playback (much less encode). So essentially, it's only good for watching on PC's right now with enough power to playback the files in software.
Best to encode with High Profile 8 Bit if you want to play it on the Prime.

A rather unexpected benefit of the ICS update is that all my video players are now using hardware acceleration with every video I can throw at them, even my 10bit 1080p mkvs are using hardware acceleration (and playing smoothly). However, I am getting artifacts on the 10bit encodes and audio doesn't always work with hardware acceleration.
Guess it's back to finding the perfect video player since moboplayer won't display subtitles w/ hardware acceleration, mplayer won't software decode audio. . . blah.
. . .
Think I found my winner: MX video player
It's allowing me to select s/w decoding of audio tracks, handling dual audio tracks, subtitles and it's using hardware acceleration for the video so that i don't have to recompress my videos. . . Just grab and go.
ill have to try to see if i get better results forcing software for audio and hardware or w/e for video

That's interesting with the ICS update. MX Video Player can decode 10-bit videos in software (since 10-bit videos currently cannot be hardware accelerated), but what's the performance like? I doubt 1080p would be smooth unless it has a low ref frames, but 720p might be passable.
So there are currently no video players that support both 10bit H.264 and subtitles? That's a shame. I tried a few different players (can't remember the names) and there was one, I think diceplayer which seemed to work best with mkv and subs but no 10 bit support.
Then I read this on the mvideoplayer site (sorry, can't post links yet)
>Video formats supported: Depends on your phone...
>Subtitles: srt,ssa,ass,sub,mpl,psb,txt,smi
Now I read somewhere that the Galaxy S2 natively supports MKV and 10 bit (haven't tried it yet as I just assumed the stock player wouldn't do it). So that being the case, it looks like this program uses internal decoders and is able to read the subs. Has anyone had any success with this?
How about VLC or coreplayer from the corecodec guys? I think those are our best bets but I'd like something ASAP.

I am rooted (ICS) and overclocked to 1.6ghz, so take heed with my comments. 720p 10bit anime's appear to be playing acceptably in software mode without any artifacts. 1080p is out of the question in software mode; however, the artifacting present with hardware acceleration isn't too bad so I haven't been bothering to transcode my 10bit videos when I transfer them to my prime.

That gives me some more info to work with. Thanks!
What 10-bit encodes have you tried? The biggest problem is there's no set standard from these encoders - you'll come across some 720p files that were encoded using 8 ref frames, but others that use 16 ref frames (which is more demanding to decode).
I have two 10bit Anime series with me currently, per MediaInfo:
The 1080p series is listed as 23.976 fps AVC(High 10[email protected])(CABAC / 16 Ref Frames)
and the 720p series is listed as 23.976 fps AVC(High [email protected])(CABAC / 16 Ref Frames).
