if its a flash drive, you don't need external power

Are you rooted? If so, what Rom and what kernel?
I had the same issue with the bonsai .1.5 with their 2.0 kernel. Once I flashed over Pershoot's latest, I was good again and usb key could be read/seen.

Powered hub is only needed for high-current bus-powered devices, right now the known list is:
1) 2.5" portable hard drives (of the spinning type)
2) PS3 controllers that are not fully charged
Things that do not need a powered hub:
1) Flash drives and flash card readers (Must be FAT32)
2) Fully charged PS3 controllers
3) 3.5" externally-powered hard drives (however most of these are NTFS, which presents its own challenge).
Apparently the kernel in Bonsai ROMs is severely broken with regards to USB host support.
Powered usb hub
HI has anyone got a UK link for a Powered usb hub as trying to connect a 2.5 device to my tab 10.1
Thanks

Just like the title says it...does anyone know if it will be able to read a portable hd using the usb dongle?
Not enough power for bus-powered spinning media. Thumb drives and externally powered drives should work.

Yes, if it is connected through powered USB Hub

Yeah, that basically makes it an external-power drive.

I have OTG USB host cable for Motorola Xomm. Is there any way this coulb be used with Atrix??
Don't take my answer as 100 percent. I want to say no dice on the usb host deal, but the hd dock and lapdock have usb ports for key/mouse. I think somebody mounted an external hdd but had problems. Hopefully somebody else can shed more light on this.
I voided my warranty.
It'll need a 5vdc power supply

Yeah there is a post on this already but the answer is that you just need a powered USB hub and that cable and you can use it as a host.

So ho come Galaxy S2 does not need powered hub??

I know nothing about Samsung, but my Atrix works fine as USB host. All you need is powered USB hub and cheap OTG adapter. I bought one from Dealextreme (sorry, can't post links). It works great with any USB keyboard or mouse or FAT formated memory drive.

Hi
I read on a review that someone managed to get usb host on a 2.5 hard disk without the need for a y power cable. I can't get it to work - has anyone else had an opportunity to play with it and get it working?
Cheers

That was me, still works with my WD 500GB portable drive on the release firmware. Yours may require more power than mine though?
Ok thanks for the reply . My drive fires up but no usb storage listed in the file manager unfortunately. Am I missing something? Will dig out my y cable when I get back from camping!

Yeah, your HDD seemingly powering up isn't always enough, had the same issue on an older machine where i had to use a Y-cable despite that the hdd's led powered up as well as i could hear the disk spinning.
That's a shame, I got mildly excited when I read your review! Oh well!

Would not work with my Toshiba 1TB HD. Did connect multiple flashdrives.
What have you connected?

I've connected my PS3 controller and synced it over Bluetooth with the Sixaxis app. I've also connected a mouse and it worked pretty well. Nothing else so far.
Man this phone is great. Would love to hear what else you guys have connected.

got my 500gb GoFlex sattelite to work. Took a while to show my files but it definitely works.

Have you tried connecting the phone to a powered hub and then the HDD.

got a few flash drives to work. a few different mice. a USB hub AND.... a SNES controller i wired up for USB with the retro-USB chip.
the controller was plug and play! no hacking/drivers needed!!!
i would assume most of the Retro-USB DIY/solder type chips would work then cuz i think they are the same controller chip but just flashed different for the different types of controllers.
Hmm,
connected my usb HD , a usb flash drive, and my logitech unifying receiver --> with keyboard and mouse ...all at the same time via a powered hub ;-) ... and it works!
Great ideas! Waiting on my USB hub now. Thanks everyone.

Tried connecting it to various head units (was thinking about buying one for music), didn't work with any of them. And since the S3 doesn't support Mass Storage mode it basically can't be used at all (unless you do Aux or Blutooth, which I don't want to do).
is there a external dvd player disc drive for androids?
Not that i have seen, the biggest issue would be to get enough power to it.
If it was a drive that also plugged into a wall socket i guess it could work but a app would need to be written to play the dvd.
And as it would not get enough power just from the devices usb it wouldnt be very portable and so quite pointless

Android doesn't recognize CD or DVD drives. I have a USB to SATA/IDE converter that is externally powered. On CM9 on my Touchpad I can hook it up via OTG and computer HDDs will work just fine both in SATA and IDE. But CD and DVD drives don't show up at all in Android.
but would it be possible to create a app and driver for android? i have heard of some tablets aparently having cd drives dont no how true it is.
