Hi
I read on a review that someone managed to get usb host on a 2.5 hard disk without the need for a y power cable. I can't get it to work - has anyone else had an opportunity to play with it and get it working?
Cheers

That was me, still works with my WD 500GB portable drive on the release firmware. Yours may require more power than mine though?
Ok thanks for the reply . My drive fires up but no usb storage listed in the file manager unfortunately. Am I missing something? Will dig out my y cable when I get back from camping!

Yeah, your HDD seemingly powering up isn't always enough, had the same issue on an older machine where i had to use a Y-cable despite that the hdd's led powered up as well as i could hear the disk spinning.
That's a shame, I got mildly excited when I read your review! Oh well!

Try a new USB cable I used a PSP USB cable for a while when my HTC hero USB cable stopped working properly. Just find some more USB cables and test them all.

You probably damaged the USB controller with ESD. You can try another USB port, but it's likely that all the ports are damaged (at least all the ports on that controller). Check the other ports on the PC. Most modern PCs have at least a couple of USB hubs built in. It is possible that a port on another hub or controller may work. Otherwise, you might be able to use a USB add in card in the computer if all the built-in ports are dead. They are relatively cheap if you have the slot in the machine to install one.

mount to PC is a known issue methinks. What is your current setup? Rom/kernel? and how are your settings? USB debugging set on/off? auto connect set to "ask on connection"?

Its common with the 2.2.1 roms. What you need to do is replace the vold.conf, and the vold.fstab files in system/ect. I have attached the ones you need. Just use root explorer and drop them in the ect folder, reboot, and test.

you should download toolbox from development section and the first option is to install drivers. once u run the program. install it and then test the usb cables. by the way i never charge my phone from a computer i like separate chargers so im using the charger for BB to charge my battery. its quicker as well.

Are you rooted? If so, what Rom and what kernel?
I had the same issue with the bonsai .1.5 with their 2.0 kernel. Once I flashed over Pershoot's latest, I was good again and usb key could be read/seen.

Powered hub is only needed for high-current bus-powered devices, right now the known list is:
1) 2.5" portable hard drives (of the spinning type)
2) PS3 controllers that are not fully charged
Things that do not need a powered hub:
1) Flash drives and flash card readers (Must be FAT32)
2) Fully charged PS3 controllers
3) 3.5" externally-powered hard drives (however most of these are NTFS, which presents its own challenge).
Apparently the kernel in Bonsai ROMs is severely broken with regards to USB host support.
Powered usb hub
HI has anyone got a UK link for a Powered usb hub as trying to connect a 2.5 device to my tab 10.1
Thanks

From my experience so far:
A) Does need external power supply
B) Mac formatted drives don't stay connected

Not sure about US variants, but in case anyone else is wondering: it works flawlessly on the Rogers ones (tested on both blue 32gb and white 16gb). It should be the same on the others too I think, since they're similar enough.

Awesome! Any particular connecter that works better than others for you? I've seen a few inexpensive ones (1-3$). Didn't know if it was a "get what you pay for" kind of deal or they're all pretty much the same.

USB OTG works on the AT&T variant as well.

Yeah, USB OTG is working fine here on my ATT S3. Tested it a few days ago with a $1 cheapo usbotg cable from ebay + 32GB usb3 flash drive.
Works on T-Mobile
Works fine on a sprint 16GB. First plugged in wireless mouse, keyboard, 640GB hard drive, ps3 controller (use with sixaxis controller over Bluetooth now) all working. Plugged in an epson printer and it notified me that I plugged a printer in.. but then proceeded to tell me that the only printer supported is a samsung printer. We need a workaround for this

No we don't. In the rare event that you want to print from your phone, check out the "cloud print" app - works with any network shared printer.

Likely power, try with a hub maybe? My spinning disk usb hard drive doesn't work either, but makes a clicking sound. I recon there is a limit to the current the phone can supply.

Yea I've tried with the hub but still none of my files show up in the "My Files" app or a 3rd party file explorer. Shows a mass storage device is connected in notification bar and the HDD LED light is even on.

Try navigating to /mnt/ folder in the file explorer. That is where usb drivers will show.

It depends what the external sd is and how big it is in memory size, some work and some don't.
I have a 1 tb external and it doesn't register on my phone not even if I repartition it.

i suppose i could go through the process of using OTG Cable with my Nexus 7 and then onto my phone but it's too much hard work to be honest, all i wanna do is to get music onto my phone from the external HD, this isn't good, ill have to reconsider my options unless anyone knows a better way?

Ah figured out how to use my hdd by installing an app called paragon ntfs then plugging my wired hub into my otg cable then plugging my wired extended hdd into that.
It's a very annoying process just to plug a hard drive in but it worked

Okay what I did was have my hub connected to the mains which is also connected to my otg cable of my note 10.1
Installed the paragon app that reads ntfc data on a hard drive (some are fat32 so don't need this app)
Then connected my external 1tb hard drive which is connected to the mains to the hub and all my files showed up on my note 10.1
Hope that's easier to understand
Oops sorry exactly the same process with a galaxy s3, get confused between forums
