[Q] Yellowed screens on Evo 3D - HTC EVO 3D

I just recently switched from an Evo 4G to a new Evo 3D. After about an hour of having it I noticed something was off with the screen. It had a yellowish tint to it (I've had an Evo 4G and a Nexus S 4G do this out of the box also). Now I did return the phone to get one that had a correctly functioning screen, but my question is this: Has anyone else experienced this with the Evo 3D? I did notice that the serial number on the 3Ds with the yellowed screens were HT17 models and the one I ended up with that had a good screen was an HT16.
P.S. I just want other users thoughts on this. I don't want people telling me to just exchange the phone. Has anyone else with the HT17 models experienced this? There were three Evo 3Ds that I have seen do this.

I have an HT17 serial number and my screen is not yellowish tint at all. Very happy with the whites.

My best guess is that this Sprint store received a bad batch. Or I just have bad luck considering I have run across 5 yellowed screens across 3 different products.

I have a ht16 now and i got the yellowish screen. I had 2 before that was bright whites but I dont remember what they were. I dont know if i really wanna exchange again since everything else is good and dont want to end something worse
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk

my original 3D was a HT16 I got through the premier order deal and had a slight tilt to the screen so I got telesales to send me another. The new one is an HT17. Now on to the differences I've noticed so far.
HT16(original)
Screen-> darker/slight yellow whites(or more realistic) when compared to the new one.
dmesg showed the following:
"panel: mipi_cmd_novatek_qhd"
"<6>[ 1.797454] mipi_novatek_panel_type_detect: panel_type=PANEL_ID_SHR_SHARP_NT"
HT17(newer just received yesterday)
brighter whites somewhat fake at times i guess you could view it.
power button was very mushy and much tougher to work compared to the HT16 which was very firm and clicky.
dmesg showed:
"<6>[ 1608.757825] Panel Type = PANEL_ID_SHR_SHARP_NT"
Now on to the odd thing. I took pictures with both phones in the exact same location and settings and you can tell when viewing on the phone the one has lil brighter(maybe faker) whites. I thought possibly that it could be just because of the screen and the photo taken would look the same on a PC but they dont. you still see the diff in whites on home PC. Also somehow the photos size were different with the HT17(brighter whites) coming in at 611KB, and the older HT16 file was 776KB.
Now whats even funnier is that when you select the photo in the gallery and view details the HT17(brighter whites) lists it at 478KB and the HT16(original) lists its size at 613KB. This is different fromt he size thats listed when you email it, and even whats listed next to it when you attach it in an email.

anyone explain what I posted up at all?

I'm gonna try mine with the same picture test. How do you find the HT#? I'm sure it's so stupid obvious I'm just overlooking it.....

its on the box your phone came in and also should be under the battery.

As for your issue with the picture file size, that just sounds odd. Were both phones the same software version?

the yellowing could possibly be glue that hasnt dried all the way yet. it happens if they are moving units real fast. if this is the problem it should dry out in a few days and your whites will be white again. could be a defect too. if anyone else has this problem try giving it a few days and see if it goes away.

nope the original one was on the original OS, while the other was on the newer one.

I've had 3 Evos...2 with the yellowish tint, and one without. I honestly don't think most people notice since it seems other colors are fine and sharpness is still good. It's only apparent usually when you go to a app or webpage with an allwhite background and even more apparent when you compare it to another phone with a nonyellow tint(which I did).

i just got a replacement yesterday and the screen has a yellow tint. i dont know if i should keep it or return it.

I'm using a HT17 and the screen is very yellow. If I max out the brightness it gets washed out and the blacks goes almost grey. Next to my Desire Z the screen doesn't even come close to representing the correct colors. I notice this especially in the search page and a blank internet page.
My Sensations had totally different screen as well. The first was nice and white and the second was yellowish... I'm so frustrated...

I noticed that side by side, the evo has cooler colors (blue tint) and I've noticed that the 3d has warmer colors (red tint). May just be the nature of the screen

Screen/LCD Possible 2 different types of displays/qualities?

Hello, I just got a Thunderbolt through my work and I noticed the screen tends to wash out at angles. I had this same problem with my T-Mobile HTC Glacier or MT4G. It turned out to be 2 different vendors Sharp and Sony displays being used in this model. Once I got the good display it was a noticeable difference in the quality of the better display vs the bad one. Direct viewing from straight on is ok just as it was on the HTC Glacier. So I just wonder if anyone might have a good one and could post some pics to show.
Here is my original thread for the HTC Glacier with the Screen issues. There are some pictures and videos to compare the differences. I'm seeing some washing out at angles, especially around the clock digits where this problem is easily seen.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863679
Here are some pictures of mine with the Sharp screen. The noticeable areas are the clock widget black areas where they flip.
I'd say it's possible. I'm sure they have more than one place that manufactures the devices. There's been some variability in the build quality of the devices, so it's not too far fetched.
I don't have a camera other than my phone to take pictures, though. It looks like a really good display to me and doesn't "wash out"
You're right there are two displays. I went to the store last week to compare my phone with the display. Because I used to have the mytouch 4g and it took three tries to get one with a nice display. So I was surprise, when I saw the display model and colors were not as vibrant as mine. Man did I get Lucky, first try and it's a winner.
This is interesting. I ran a "dmesg |grep panel" and it returned sharp. I wonder if anyone would get Sony.
Mine is noticeably worse than my MT4G that had the good screen.

If you ask me, there is no doubt that there are two panels for this device. My first TBolt (which had several problems) had a really bad screen and I complained about it in another thread like this one. I had it exchanged and the new one is VERY much better. The first one was not crisp, colors were bad, looked blown out next to my DInc OLED. The replacement is crisp and the colors are beautiful.
I didn't get a chance to compare side-by-side, but everyone who had seen my first one, even my wife who is pretty oblivious about these things, would say that the new one is dramatically better.

Thanks, could some of you with good screens do a dmesg in terminal and report if you have a sharp or Sony panel. Make sure you restart then immediately run the terminal and dmesg command. Mine is a sharp so I'm thinking it is the bad display. Also if you can post some pictures of the screen from the side at extreme angles.
I will try to take some pictures of mine and post them tomorrow.
Before some of you start stating your opinions about looking at the screen at angles, yes there are situations where you are viewing at angles. Also it has been proven at least in the MT4G with the bad sharp display that the colors are not as vivid as with the sony screen even when looking straight on.
Mine is made in Taiwan. If you have a good one post where it was made please.
Mine returned Sharp.. and the screen is much better than my OG droid and my wife's fasicnate. I can read this post at ~160ish degrees, sooo.. no idea

Reading this board may not be enough to tell. I will be interested to see if anyone has a Sony screen to compare.
The point is, everything I do on this phone can be done at that angle, in relation to using the screen. Colors do not change, only the brightness, as to be expected from a gloss screen (and gloss screen protector).
I personally think that shows a quality screen.
Definitely not something to worry about.
FYI : I have my dpi set to 200 if that matters

Here are some more pictures which stand out more with green colors. You can really tell the difference as you tilt to angles and the deep green contrast is lost and it is hard to define the icons. The middle picture is taken from straight on and you can see the difference. I think on the Good Sony displays there will be no difference when looking from angles. I really suspect that the same display problems are following from HTC and the MT4G.
Is there any way to tell my looking at the hardware number what screen we have?

No I doubt it, we could never tell with the MT4G. The only one thing that seemed to hold true in the beginning was the ones made in China had a higher percentage of the good screens and more of the ones made in Taiwan had the more of the bad ones.
i have a sharp panel as well. i'm no connoisseur apparently because i think my screen looks just as good as my old incredible.
I have one made in taiwan and it is essentially flawless, only thing wrong with it is 2 very tiny dots of light leak which can only be seen in pitch black

Odd, mine is made in Taiwan, are all bolts produced there now?
dmesg says sharp panel, but I have no complaints about viewing angle or contrast after quite a bit of fiddling with it and trying to find something to whine about.
I have a sharp panel and it's better than the display model at my local store. I used to own a mytouch 4g, it took three tries to get a good display. And the good display was made in china. My TB is made in Taiwan.
This would explain why some claim to have gorilla glass style display that can't be scratched and others are getting scratches from car keys.
My first phone the digitizer went out after a drop out of the car (no glass broken or cosmetic issues just said touch panel- fail) and the second phone has light leakage not just at the bottom but at the corners too. There is a gap at the right corner for whatever to get into my phone.
I want to know if there is a different 'nicer' panel. It seems quite a few people are popping up with broken digitizers...
The phone I have is a Sharp lq043y1dx04
How do I know? Because I busted mine open to try and fix my broken digitizer. You can see pics and read the story in my post "Anyone want to see the inside of a thunderbolt?"
Still no replacements out there :-(
Digitizer or LCD
I have not taken this phone apart. But I did replace the digitizer on the HTC INC. The Digitizer is separate from the LCD in that phone. Does anyone know if the Digitizer is separate in the Thunderbolt? If so, it does not matter who the manufacturer of the LCD is.
I to agree with this thread that the digitizer on the Thunderrbolt is very easily scratched especially compared to the HTC INC.

Question about the Screen

I went into my Corporate Sprint store today and got to see the Evo 3D...I was wondering why the whites look so yellow-ish or an off white kind of look to it..Is this a result of qHD? Of course the Sprint employee couldn't answer any of my questions because he wasn't even suppose to let me see the phone supposedly. But we all know he couldn't answer me because he just did't know.
So yeah, screen is a little dingy on the whites and I noticed it right away..Maybe this was just the store model? And if not is this something that could be corrected with root later?
I hope that's not the case. I have a launch day EvO HW0002 and when I saw the HW0003's, I was like What did they do? Right away I saw the screen looked washed out and whites had a yellowish tint. Then they came out with the HW0004's and it looked like mine again. You can youtube the videos to see people showing the differences. After the reviews and whatnot, I just keep saying to myself...You have 30 days
I noticed a few reviews also commented on the poor viewing angles. The screen is probably going to make it or break it for me. It will be hard letting go of my Epic with Super AMOELD, but I will definitely have to see the Evo 3D in person before I buy it.
Everything on the screen looked super crisp and sharp.I didn't hold it in any peculiar way to see the viewing angels. But the white on the clock just didn't look right.I've been a sense user since 09 and i'm just use to they way it looks and I could immediately tell there was something different..Oh well, like the guy above said I got 30 days.Either I get use to it or it goes back if it bothers me that much.

I recently switched to sprint and got 3 EVO 4Gs. I notice even all 3 of them are 0004, one of them is more yellowish (which i perfer) than the other 2.

[Q] bright white spot/blotch on screen

I've had my evo 3d for about a month and a half and recently I've noticed that near the bottom middle of the screen there is a small 1/8 inch blotch that is brighter than the rest of the screen. It is most noticeable on a white screen and seems to be getting worse. Anyone know what could cause something like that? Or how to fix it without taking it to sprint?
Would sprint fix it if it is a defect of the phone since its less than 2 months old when it doesnt have the extended warranty?
Has no one else run into this problem?
You sure you have an Evo3D? Lol.
I had this exact issue in the same spot on my Evo4G. It was faint and only noticeable on white. Now its noticeable nearly all the time. But I haven't heard of that same issue on the 3D at all.
Yes it is the 3D. I would try taking it into sprint but 1) its rooted, 2) the nearest sprint store is a 50 minute drive away since I don't live near where I bought it and 3) I dont have the TEP so I dont know if it is covered under like a manufactures warranty or anything. The spot is getting worse and I know over time it will be really bad. I can already start to see it even when not viewing a white page. Any light color shows it now.
I had this same issue on several 4g's but never heard of it on the 3d. I would still try to get then to replace the screen, just have a stock looking ROM loaded up and keep your fingers crossed.

Screen color is warm, is everyone elses the same?

Just wondering if everyone elses LTE is set at a warm color, orange'ish whites
compared to the evo 4g which is cool with blue'ish whites
possible to ever change this?

My brothers has cool whites and I have warm whites...yet our panels are both Sony...so I don't get it.
mine is also a warm-toned screen, nonetheless it looks great
I posted about this yesterday but it already got buried. Unfortunately you can either hassle with taking it back and hoping for a more blueish white panel or you can get used to it. I hated the look when i unboxed, I have the same yellowish tint on white. But im already used to it for the most part. There is an app on the play store called "Screen adjuster" that you can add some blue back in but its not perfect and it has to run in the background i haven't tested to see how much of a load it puts on the phone if left on all day. Also a good app to use to visually inspect the colors your panel is showing is "dead pixel test". So software can be used to help the tint, but as far as a permanent solution, I believe that would be up to HTC. Maybe some devs can do it eventually once we have s-off.
I've just starting to really notice this, and its driving me nuts.
The whites are not white at all, they are more yellowish eggshell (or as I like to call it 'light puke'). You can really notice it when your in natural light. I held it up to something pure white and you can see an epic difference.
Does this not bother anybody else? I forget, but don't some ROMs (for other phones) have options to change screen tones? Is this something that I can look forward to ? Or perhaps my eyes (and mind) are just playing tricks on me.
I dislike 'warm' tones a lot. I wish I gotten a 'cool' tone phone instead, I can handle the blue tone a lot better.
I wonder why this is I mean it isnt like amoled n the screens should be.the.same.... Maybe dim lights inside?
Root it and try chainfire 3d, it has the option to change screen tone in I believe the pro version. Added bonus, works with all roms to my knowledge. I haven't tried it yet myself as I'm completely happy with the tone on mine, but I used it on the og evo for a long time.

Thanks, I'll give it a try since I'm already rooted. I messed around with 'screen adjuster' and 'filer your screen' and neither seemed to do the trick.
EDIT: Looks like I'll have to wait a bit longer to play with chainfire 3d. Requires S-off (or probably just unlock bootloader). Only have root. But chainfire looks promising.
This was a problem on the One X for AT&T but most of them cleared up after a week or so. My advice would be to keep the brightness up for a while when using it.

We have two EVO LTE and one of ours is much cooler and blue and the other is much warmer. How do you check if the display type to see if they are different?
My screen is warm also. At first I thought it was the ZAGG HD screen protector that was causing that yellowish tint, but after I removed it, it was still there.
If anyone with two EVO LTE phones can post a side-by-side picture of the warm and cool screens, I'd greatly appreciate it.
TIA
Here is a picture. Its not the best quality so it might be hard to tell a difference. The difference is much more apparent in real life.
Supposedly its due to the adhesive. There is a thread about it in the HOX forum. My screen seems to be whiter than it was a week ago but that may be a placebo effect- I need to do another side by side comparison with my iPhone to tell.

I was dreading a problem like this. I can deal with blacks not being black (have to deal with it with the very nature of LCD) but whites... Yeah, they need to be white.
Here's to hoping my device doesn't have this issue. I will update this post with news.
get an app called screen adjuster
then increase the blue a little bit, to about 15 or so
woooooorks wonderss!!!
On my NS4G, there was a kernel mod developed by SuperCurio that allowed you to adjust gamma levels. I always ran my phone with very cool blue whites.
Maybe something like that would be possible for the Evo?
I think I have the warmer screen color. Things like this doesn't bother me at all. I've seen thread like this everytime a new phone comes out. After a few week your eyes and OCD levels will adjust.

You can def tell the one on the right is the warm though. I'm sure in direct natural light the difference is huge.

Same. I can deal with the black but not the whites. Whites need to be crisp and clean not yellow. I repainted all the eggshell whites in my house to pure white. To me it takes away the crispness of the screen.

dont think its an adhesive bonding process still "curing"
i think the color temp is permanent.
hopefully a dev will allow color temp change because its a little awkward staring at my pc monitor, then looking at the phone's brown and yellow drab lcd tint.

The best test is to open the settings menu (Evo white) and compare it against a piece of notebook paper (real white). Its gross.

[Q] EVO LTE Screen Flex/LCD Ripple Issues?

Unfortunately my OCD kicked in and I returned my first EVO LTE as it had peace of dust under the screen and slight light leakage at the bottom. Other than that my screen never had any flex or ripple issues and I am regretting that I took it in for an exchange!! My 1st exchange unit had a pixel that was stuck in the on position and had seriously bad LCD ripple effect. Took that back to a different Best Buy and the second exchange also has this same LCD ripple effect. It is most noticeable on black screens if you lightly press around the sides like you are scrolling up and down a web page. It can also be scene on the home screen. There are several videos of a One X having this issue. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DmLNSiNT24
My question is, how many people have this issue? I am crossing my finger and hoping I can get a unit again that doesn't as I truely am pleased with the other aspects of this phone and can deal with the other small little hickups of a new product launch.
I have none of this.
my OG Evo had this after I replaced the digitizer. i assumed i did something wrong since the one before it did not. no issues on my lte
Limited sample of responses so far, but seems to be looking more positive than I expected it to be!
Maybe I have a better chance of my next replacement not having this issue than I thought! I hope it was just a bad batch for this area and the next shipment will be better!
Had same ripple issues
Hi..well I got my evo lte on a pre order. I ve had all the evos thru the last couple years and the LTE is a very good phone. I noticed the exact same thing, when I would gently push or tap on the screen it would have clothes of light that we're very bad,and on black screens that was even worse. I called sprint and they told me to go to a store to exchange it. I went to the store and the manager was awesome we sat down and he brought out 5 brand new EVO LTE s for us to try. At his amazement they all were as bad if not worse then mine on the ripple effect. I have a galaxy 2 touch and when we pushed on that screen no matter how hard it showed no signs of light bleeding or rippling at all. He didn't know what to tell me but did they say the screen on the htc should not do that at all and it might be a bad batch. To me it seemd the glass on the LCD screen didn't bond well with the glue they used, and when you pushed or tapped it would go down into the LCD screen. I know when you push directly on a LCD tv,computer screen it will give you the same similar effect. I called sprint and told them I was returning the phone and the lady in the return department told me she has had a few calls about people wanting to return the phone because of this issue. I really like the LTE,but couldn't put up with the screen issues. I am going to wait till the galaxy 3 comes out and also by then check out the EVO lte again to see if the problem has been fixed.
Sigh first off mine does this but I have to apply more force then is needed for the phone to register the touch. Second off WHY are you pushing with any kind of pressure to even do that? Now if you're just touching the LCD and it is doing this I understand. Also even in the vid it looks like more force is being applied as needed but not as much as I have to apply? That being said if you think sgsiii will be better well it will cause it doesn't use a LCD lolol.
Edit I think this is to have gorilla glass 2 which is thinner so chances of this happening are going to be common I'd assum of you push down on the screens lol.

From my experience I am not applying any more pressure than I would use normally. That is the only reason I noticed it. I was typing in my numerical pass code on a black screen and saw the ripples. I then did further investigation. The video might not be the best reproduction of how you get the problem under normal use, but it does show what the problem looks like. My first phone I actually used more pressure on trying to figure out what the dust spot was and never had this issue occur so had no clue what I would run into with an exchange. This is a production issue on some LTE's and One X's. The below comment was posted in an article on the One X in April. I just think some phones are much more noticeable than others and who knows what this issue will turn into over the life of the phone.
Source: TechnoBuffalo
"Three separate models provided by HTC, and one by network Three, produced the issue, CNET UK said, meaning it may potentially be widespread. However, Daniel Hundt, creative director at One & Co., HTC’s design consultancy, said the company would never “let that ship.” Hundt added, “maybe this is not a shipping build,” referring to a unit CNET UK writer Natasha Lomas demonstrated the issue with.
TechnoBuffalo’s own Jon Rettinger and Todd Hasleton didn’t notice the issue when reviewing the One X, and chances are good the average user won’t either. The device really is one of the most beautiful phones out there. It also provided the best Android experience we’ve had yet, so this “screen flex flaw” issue shouldn’t deter folks from picking the device up. Still, we reached out to HTC for comment, and will update as soon as we hear back"
http://www.technobuffalo.com/companies/htc/htc-one-x-may-be-plagued-by-minor-screen-flex-flaw-issue/
This is not something that will push me to an S3 though!
Ok well then that's a diff story and I'm wondering if it due to the glue not curing by the time it got to you... Or a lack of glue. Since the glue has apparently been a problem this time around for HTC lol. And glad to know you won't defect to the sgsiii. The one thing I don't understand is why Samsung uses the gn as a beta for their sgs line. Same screen on gn and sgsiii but its to be slightly better.(only cause they used the gn as a test)

Yep, glue on this current phone has the screen slowly getting white. Started out kind of yellow and now most of it is white with the bottom section still a little yellow. Going to give it till Friday to see if anything improves and if not I will test out the new shipment at Best Buy and try my hand at another exchange.
Update:
Went back to Best Buy and we opened up and looked at 5 different phones and EVERY single one of them had this issue. Some worse than others, but it was still apparent.
Not giving up though, trying a different store today to see how that works. I know my very first phone did NOT have this issue, just had a small speck of dust and slight light leakage..... I SOOO wish I had that phone back! Should have never returned it.
Update on my OCD - LCD Flex Issue:
5 Different Best Buys in two different states. Every phone I have tested had this issue to some extent (18 different phones tested). Some worse than others. I now believe my original phone had the issue, but was just less noticeable. Also, the screens normally do start out with more of a yellow tint from the glue. This mostly goes away after a few days of high brightness use, but sometimes a slight yellow band at the bottom remains. I think HTC doubled up the glue to help with the light leakage issues they are known for in the past.
Current phone has white balance closer to a pure white than a light yellow. (no yellow band at bottom either. This screen still has the flex issue but needs medium/medium heavy pressure to see on a black screen. I should never have to press that hard on anything to ever notice it. I am almost perfectly happy now, only bad thing is it does have one stuck pixel at the top of the screen (can't be seen on Pink, Red, Blue or Black, but is apparent on Yellow, Light Blue, Green, White and Gray). Would have never noticed it without the dead pixel test. I would rather have that than have it sensitive to the flex issue and any yellow tint to my white screen.
So, if you have not noticed the flex issue, then DO NOT look for it or try to reproduce it. You will most likely find it. Not a show stopper and should not be reproduced under normal use (Except for the few bad eggs that are really sensitive).
