It's my understanding that there are currently two updated ROMS to download - the Modaco one and the generic HTC update found on the Modaco thread.
My question is, having rooted the phone, why would the Modaco one be a better bet? I feel like I may as well go for the generic one. I am a bit of a noob when it comes to things liked this, so a summary of pros and cons to each would be extremely helpful. For instance, does the generic ROM allow root access?
Also, for anyone in the same position as me, check out the unlockr guide videos on rooting and upgrading the ROM on your phone - http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-hero/
So handy!
Thanks.
This is just from what (i think) I know...
1/ Has additional apps that are useful e.g. CustomLocale, Spare Parts, Anycut, Wifi teethering, A2SD etc. You can get these yourself but obviously you would have to do the leg work.
2/ and you get all the stuff listed on the first page of the Modaco ROM thread.
3/ If you use the generic HTC ROM it won't be rooted.
4/ Most of the folders you would want write access to are already mounted by default. If you are a noob this will save you working out how to do this.
For me it was a no brainer to use the MCR.
Thank you for the response! What do you mean by 'write access' ?

"Write Access" means you can copy files on to the drive/folder. Android is based on unix so by default you don't have write or even read access to quite a few of the folders you would normally need access to for modding, copying files, deleting files, putting files on your phone etc.
You have to do this via a command prompt either from your computer when the phone is connected or using an emulator on the phone. You may or may not want to do any of these things but it would generally make life easier for you if you wanted to.
Ok. Thanks for breaking that down for me Isim.
All that remains for me to do now is partition my SD card. I have looked at some of the guides and they scare the ****e out of me. What's the simplest way of partitioning? Do I have to enter the world of command-line prompts? Any programs with a GUI?
Hi Isim , just another quick question does this rom support portuguese language, thanks

If you flash to the generic ROM, you'll have to root your device again since the generic ROM won't be rooted (assuming it is the unadulterated WWE release).

I'm a complete noob and I've searched the forums and can't find an answer to my questions. (I'm sure there's some answer in Japanese on a Japanese forum somewhere, but my Japanese is not up to that level.)
I have a Toshiba Regza IS04 from AU (in Japan).
Running Android 2.2.2
Baseband Version 5014.1907.39
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9-rel [email protected] #1
Build Number FFK300
I have been researching rooting on and off for months since I first got the phone and have decided I would like to root it. My reasons for rooting:
1. I want to get rid of all the apps that were pre-installed that I don't use.
2. I would like to have the latest version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. (I doubt that another authorized upgrade from au is ever going to happen, since the 2.1 to 2.2 upgrade.)
It seems from reading forums that there are special builds of an OS depending on the phone?
My questions:
1. What is the best way to backup my phone before rooting?
2. What would be the best rooting method for my phone (SuperOneClick?)?
3. How can I (or even can I) upgrade my Android to 4.0?
Thanks for any help!!
Sam
To answer my own question, in case any one else wants to know:
Okay... it looks like I cannot post external links... until I post 8 times, which I don't really predict doing... so I'm going to try just removing the http at the beginning and see if it will go.
Superoneclick v2.2 does NOT work with this phone. It gets through "Rooting device... Step #7" but cannot remount.
Unrevoked does not work.
Z4root also does not work.
But I found a Japanese site with directions that did work! YES!!
hibari.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/smartphone/1320415141/
Somewhere in the page was the following information and link:
■auto_rootkit_is04_v0.5+suhax
hotfile.com/dl/134084004/f59084e/auto_rootkit_is04_v0.5suhax.zip.html
I downloaded the zip file and extracted it. I clicked on adb.exe first and then clicked on the auto_rootkit_is04 batch file. I just hit enter after each step. (It's in Japanese, but all it says is each step it is doing and then to hit any key.)
The first time I ran it, it did not work. The second time, I turned my phone off and on again before trying anything, and bingo: I had root!
Some of the Japanese threads were saying something about the problem with superoneclick was that the is04 took too long to mount and so there was an error. At least, I think that's what it said. My Japanese is okay, but not always good enough for this type of stuff.
I hope this can help someone else.
Thank you so much for this response!
I have the same phone, and I've been wanting to root it for a long time. There were so many pre-installed applications that are just hogging room, especially since I can't read Japanese well enough (yet).
-T
I hope it works for you too!
I spent probably the equivalent of 2-3 days searching over the last few weeks, but couldn't find anything that I was comfortable with trying.
This morning, I finally got the nerve up to try superoneclick and was really disappointed when it wouldn't work. Then I started trying all kinds of methods, and about 8 hours later finally came across the method that worked!
It's probably the only thing frustrating sometimes about having a Japanese phone: lack of English support!
Now I'm just hoping I don't break it! I'm backing up all the apps with Titanium backup before I start deleting them one by one. I would hate to delete something that is crucial to the system and not be able to restore it. I'm also looking into other ways to backup the system.
One word of warning. Your au one market will not work unless you do one more step. It's mentioned in English in the readme file. I didn't bother because I never download from it anyway. (Although, I probably should just so I'll keep getting updates on some of the J apps that I do have.)

hi!
I am a newbie here and like you all, I would also like to root my regza phone. Can someone give a working auto_rootkit because the link above is not working. I have searched it as well on the net but still all will lead me to dead hotfile link. Or someone could send me the file instead to my yahoo mail [email protected] tnx in advance
And also i have downloaded this rootkit instead from IS04 and downloaded. After dowloading, I click the adb file and it appears a command screen with commands running so fast. Next i did click the root file and there appeared a command screen with all sorts of command running so fast. My question is, i did not received any confirmation that the rooting process was succesfull. And also i have read to other forums that one thing you will notice that rooting was successfull is that 'superuser" will be automatically installed.
Please help me on this one. To be honest I started exploring this process since i have this phone and there are apps that i wanted to uninstall not unless i root the phone.
Thank you in advance

Hi
I have this phone too. And I try to get root, you can send for me the link of you downloaded and explain for me how you made it.
Other question, I can use this phone to call in brasil?
Thank you.
:good:
My phone just had this phone and I'm trying to update it before rooting. It came with 2.1-update 1 OS version and I'm trying to update the phone to it's latest official 2.2.2.
I've downloaded the necessary 256mb file update but it didn't work. Even tried using the recovery but is still not working.
Based on my research about this phone, There's no way to update without the phone downloading the app from the official website, using the SIM and au logins.
We've lost the sim (UIM) card that came with the phone. So I guess its stuck on its current OS. I'm having trouble installing apks (Gingerbreak and even normal apps) as it always gives me the error "parsing error" or something.
Is there anyone could help?
EDIT:
I have successfully updated the phone from Android 2.1-update1 to Android 2.2.2.
Download all the necessary files here:
http://www.fmworld.net/product/phone/is04/
I have used the method of updating from the least upgrade and up to the latest. I have managed to download 3 separate files for the upgrade, namely:
IS04_RC2_RC3RE_DL.zip
IS04_RC_4.zip
IS04_TO_SP_FYRC_4.zip <- froyo update
I have extracted all the files on the sd card. make sure that the ".enc" file is found on the root of the SD Card and on the "prg" folder.
I have updated it using the recovery mode (power + volume up + camera button).
I am now currently trying to Root the device using Gingerbreak and seems that it's taking too long to root.
Also. I have able to root the 2.1-update OS using z4root.

Thx so much for your posts.
I am so glad to finally find someone with the same phone, the same problem and intentions
I do, however, need more info:
Did you extract the files into any particular folder? You obviously hooked up in de-bug mode, but did you command prompt anything?
I tried your steps but get nothing to 'hit enter' on. I have also tried the other (different version) toolkit.
You can IM me or email or post or come around and root my phone yourself - I will sell you my car, house, wife...
... as you can tell I am a little frustrated ...
lets just IM/email for now
Thx in advance,
Kaz

help
as everyone can see that link isnt working anymore,so im here asking someone whos still have it to upload :fingers-crossed: again....
Below,I will list the steps I do to setup my webtop,I am using webtop2sd on a 32GB PNY Class 10 card, and used a 2GB Transcend (not sure on class,im sure its old) card to test with, same results with both pretty much,so I think something im doing is causing it to stop working.
What happends when it stops, is it just wont come up anymore. When I plug the phone into my lapdock, I either get a bluebox with an HDMI not found error (I'm assuming from the dock itself), or the red moto logo that just moves around. I would try resetting the phone, and reinstalling the executable through the webtop2sd app, and it still wont launch. This has happened about 5 times so far, I would get it setup how I would want it to be,then it stops working.
So here is what I would do (there is a phone reboot between each step pretty much)
1. Use my PC to partiton the SD card, ~22 GB FAT32 followed by an ~8GB ext3
2. Use webtop2sd to create the webtop, default settings, aside from the missing dock fix, which I only used 2-3 out of the 5 times I ran it
3. Once I am in the new webtop, I would install terminal and synaptic, then reboot.
4. Then I would run the webtop scripts, version 1.4, hitting yes to everything, then a reboot
5. I would check to see if synaptic is installed, the last time i did this, I had to use aptitude to install it.
6. Once I got synaptic up,I would use it to install the xfce4 package. Just about everytime I would go to install it,I would get an error on the "tzdata" package, the only way I could get past it,would be to uninstall tzdata, then most of the time, whatever I would go to install would reinstall it anyway. This does concern me, because when I remove tzdata, it appears to be tied to a critical package, which may be the source of my problem, but I am not sure.
7. Once I would get xfce4 installed,I would add xfdesktop and xfce-panel to the startup list (those may not be the exact package names, there is another thread I reference for that, can't remember atm, nor can I remember the exact name of that startup file, but its on this forum somewhere). I would also comment out the awmdock one and the webtop desktop one as well.
8. I would reboot, and it would actually boot up xfce4 just fine, the only gripe I have,is that I would usually get an error on the trash service needing thunar, when it is already installed. The one time,I was able to install open office, and test out some youtube videos.
9. At about this time, I would reboot my phone to see if it still works, then I would get the "bouncing moto logo of death" on my lapdock screen, and would have to start over.
One other unrelated note, about every other time I would reboot my phone, it would come up saying SIM card not installed, so I would reboot it again to fix the problem. So there were normally 2 reboots when a reboot is required.
So,I guess I would ask a few direct questions about my problem
1. Has anyone else had a problem with the tzdata package? Is there a way around it without uninstalling it?
2. Could the full xfce4 package be breaking the webtop? Do I only need certain packages out of it?
3. Even though I tested this on 2 different SD cards, could my problem be that the files are just getting corrupted on the card? Its pretty consistant though, I canpretty much say "Look,my awesome webtop is now setup how I want it to be, now watch me reboot my phone to see it not work anymore" everytime I go to set it up.
Info on my phone:
Stock firmware, unlocked bootloader, cwm installed (I thought I needed it,but not for webtop2sd) and rooted running latest webtop2sd. I havent messed with the stock webtop on the phone itself, i rather not since I like having it as a backup.
Btw, I am a bit of a linux n00b, I've pretty much just been reading what other people have been doing. Any help would be appreciated, thanx
You sure like to mod the webtop. Lol jk.
I have no issues and I have webtop with the Lapdock with the Ninja ROM. My phone is bootloader unlocked and rooted. I personally think you modded too much if that's possible. If I were you, I would start over and try webtop with stock firmware or a ROM with a fresh sd card. That way you can know if your phone has a hardware issue or if you modded too much. Hope this helps.

I can assure you that your phone is more modded than mine is, since im running stock firmware. What I'm doing is really not that much modding, I'm just trying to get a better interface running on the webtop, which people have posted saying they have the same one working on theirs. Its also not that I can't get it working, its really not hard, just time consuming, I just need to know why it keeps breaking on phone reboots...

I honestly think you should try some of my suggestions. I think starting fresh is your best option. When something doesn't wok right or something goes wrong. Starting fresh can fix your issues.

Have you tried reflashing the phone yet with new firmwares or ROMS?
Sent from my Atrix XDA Premium App
why would I do that when the issue has something to do with the files on the SD card?
webtop2sd copies the webtop files from the phone, to the SD card,so the files on the phone are basically out of the equation at that point. So its not a problem with android, but with the other linux files from webtop on the SD card
Oh ok. Well have you tried an all new sd card yet?

I think I fixed it. by finding this little piece of info
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18465066&postcount=3
I believe tzdata has been my problem for he past like 3 days I've been messing with this
It has been running great for the past day. XFCE4 is a large improvement over the standard webtop.
Of course, I ran into another snag, I need to access windows network shares, and Samba doesn't seem to be functioning, specifically, the samba-common package wont install correctly.
This user was able to fix it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19132707&postcount=19
But I have no idea how to fix the read/sym links. Can any linux gurus here explain how that is fixed? Thanx guys!

Yeah his post was kind of light on the details.
What it looks like is that when the /var/lib/dpkg/samba-common.postinst script is run by dpkg --configure -a it calls a program named ucf that in turn wants to run the symbolic link of "readlink" located in /usr/bin.
This is where i got stuck. I am by no means a linux guru.
I tried deleting the symlink to force ucf to use the "readlink" in the path, tried setting the symlink to point to the "readlink" located in /system/bin and in /system/xbin, and set the symlink to the busybox in /system/bin and to the custom busybox webtop2sd uses in /system/etc/webtop2sd but it did not help.
The output of dpkg changed slightly depending on which "readlink" ucf used but still the same error, "readlink: invalid option", and no samba-common.
Btw my busybox is 1.19.3
2.3.5 webtop on sdcard with fixed dependencies
A little help would be appreciated.
I was told on IRC that the actual problem is that the stock kernel does not include CIPs support, which is what is required for connectivity
but I still dont like the fact that samba package is still broken...
I'm using faux123's 0.2.3 kernel though, which might have CIPs support. Its hard to tell from the changelog and features listed in his kernel thread. Btw the 0.2.3 kernel fixes the broken top panel.
Update 1-21-12
Ok, 1KDS ran into a small, well maybe not small, issue. The way the whole process works would require a large amount of RAM for the process to run properly. It's in the order of 6+ gigs because the scripts set up and run the operation in RAM. Since most people don't have that much RAM the project is on hold until a solution presents itself. I would like to thank 1KDS for looking into this. If anyone has ideas, feel free to post up.

Ok, guys here's the deal. The dev is aware of what I'm asking and is looking into possibly doing this for us. Remember these simple requests:
1) Don't ask for ETA's. Enough said.
2) If a question is asked that needs your answers/input, please give it.
3) If he is successful, and I have to stress "IF', he will need testers. Please do, I know I definitely will.
And Finally
4) If you can, donate/support, he's doing this for YOU!

Ok Here's an update. I pm'd the creator over at DXF and he has said it's pretty involved. He has said:
" It's pretty involved, it may be easier to make one myself. If you can link me the SBF file, instructions to get into the bootloader or wherever you flash from, instructions to factory reset afterward, and what root method is used for the MoPho I can work on one."
So I'm going to provide the info. My question to my fellow MoPho users is "Would you be willing to support and/or donate to him for his work on this?" If he's going to be nice enough to do this we should be nice enough to support him for his efforts. I'll update this as I find more info.

Original Post:
Have a question, how would one go about creating an automated Linux bootable CD with all the scripts and files to make it easier to SBF a MoPho?
I came from the Droid X and there was a file I downloaded that was in a word - awesome. Insert CD, boot from it, plug in phone, choose option 1, and viola!!! In a few minutes your device was flashed back to stock, no fuss no mess.
I'm a MoPho-er
I wish I could help, but IDK how to do that bub, try making a post in the Droid X Forums, ask for a dev to remake the files to boot on a CD and use this SBF file ---- use this link to download it.
See if that helps, someone may be able to make that CD.
Just thought I'd ask. It's been a few years since I dabbled with linux, Red-Hat was my last venture (10-12 years ago). I'll look at how the cd and the scripts are set up. I can probably figure it out.
I'm a MoPho-er
Let me know if you or someone can get it to work, I'd be very interested.
I think I can get it to work, just have to get the scripts right. Gonna take a fews days. I'm gonna post over at DXF and ask the person who creates them for some input.
I'm a MoPho-er
I'm linking this thread here as it has all the tools and info needed (hopefully) to create a bootable SBF CD.

Alright guys, I'll be working on a new image for the MoPho (I like that name!)
One question, anyone use the ZergRush root method on the MoPho? I have a nice script for that already as well as the Droid 3 method.
1KDS to the rescue!!!!!!!!
Thanks, your work is awesome!!!!!!
I'm a MoPho-er
I used Shabby's one click
I'm a MoPho-er
I looked at Shabby's script, looks pretty much like the Droid 3 method, I can use his script though, there may be a piece I'm not seeing that affects the MoPho. Does it work on the newest SBF/firmware?
I used it to root mine. Took it out of the box and it updated to the latest as soon as I activated it. I rooted about three days later and had success on the first try.
Edit: I don't know about the latest SBF, but (uneducated guess here) I would imagine it should.
I'm a MoPho-er
Alright guys, been busy but I'm ready to start on this new image, couple questions...
There was an SBF file posted on page 1, is that one preferred? I see there is a newer one out there.
Can someone post some clear instructions on getting into the bootloader or RSD mode and instructions for stock recovery to factory reset?
Is there a preferred bootstrap/clockwork? If one is preferred and offered free from the dev I can add a script to install it for you after rooting.
I hope I can give good info here, no one else is stepping up and I'm not fully "up to speed" on my MoPho yet. There's much I haven't tried because I'm "RSD skiddish". When I had my Droid X RSD and I just wouldn't "get along", so I'm not familiar with it. Hence the reason I loved the bootable CD.
For SBF files I think 198_6 is the latest official release. From what I understand 198_7 is out, but it's a leaked package as Sprint never released it.
As for CWM, there is one available, a thread is devoted to it. I think the version is 5.. dot something and it was made specifically for the Photon. It requires the bootloader to be unlocked as well, I believe. Thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218417
For all the other steps there is a thread by qbking77 that has videos instructing how to root, flash, unlock, install CWM, etc. here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250697
Hope this helps.

Keep me posted. Can someone PM me the link to this thread when this is done, for some reason, I'm not getting updates on this thread...
Sent from my Motorola Photon 4G (MoPho) on Sprint, the Now Network using XDA Premium.
I had a couple bad downloads of the SBF file, I've got a good one now and unzipped it, the file (uncompressed) is 2.44GB! SliTaz (the Linux distro I use for these images) boots into RAM and my machine simply doesn't have enough RAM to unzip the file and stay stable, if I had more RAM I could make the iso but very few people would be able to use it as they would need 6+ gigs of RAM to run it. For now I'm putting this project on hold until I think of something else or a smaller SBF file is released. Sorry guys.
Ouch!!!!
Bummer 1KDS
Thanks for looking into it, though. I was curious why one didn't exist yet. I guess that would be a good reason why. I guess I'm just gonna have to break down and make RSD and me get along so I can do some modding to my MoPho.

Question. Would a "virtual" environment work or is something like that just way to involved to work?
Edit:
Don't know if "virtual" is the right thought or not. I may have been thinking "RAM Disk" setup.
I'm a MoPho-er
Yeah, I use VirtualBox to build the images, my laptop has 4 gigs of RAM and I allocate around 2.5GB to the virtual machine so the machine stays stable and I can't even unzip it within that amount of memory. Like I said, even if I can build the image only a few people would be able to use it since it is so massive.
A friend of mine picked up a Proscan PLT7044k. Great cheap tablet from BigLots they wanted to gift me as a late birthday present. Sure it's cheap, but cheap can be good right? Especially if it's a backup device or something to tinker with.
Trouble is we're running into some issues. Fine. Great it's a cheap Chinese tablet. We both get that we're not expecting nexus or ipad mini or even kindle fire quality. However GetJar is, apparently, not working correctly, Amazon Marketplace (which it was linked to in the device) will not let you change settings, and My friend isn't wanting to try rooting to get google play working just yet because we're not sure if the Thread found on the matter has all the bugs worked out.
This Thread seems to be closest to what 'we' want but the model number is different (it's supposed t obe the same device save for the one we're working with included a hardware keyboard/case, but one never knows.)
Of Note when queried my friend only saw a one gig internal storage device instead of the four gig advertised and described the external media slot as a SD slot instead of a micro-sd.
So, since I am, for the moment, treating this device as different and not wanting to risk bricking before info can be gained on if it's worht keeping or taken back, trying to figure out the following:
Very minimum how does one get google play on this gizmo.
Is there anything that can be done about the touch screen lag?
Is there a CyanogenMod port that will work or other custom rom that might help with the issues of lag?
Any advice would be welcome/useful. Even 'RTFM' with links to other threads.
Edit: Be Aware my 'primary' computer is running linux (peppermint OS3, ubuntu 12.04 based distro.)
I just got this tablet. You have root accesses out of the box. There are 2 ways I have installed play store. Through root explorer and through adb push. google gapps for jellybean. here is the manual and firmware proscanvideo.com/item.asp?itemnmbr=PLT7044K . I can make a tute anyone needs.
I ended up taking mine back and getting a Nook Touch. Sure I'll still need to root the thing to get much use out of it beyond being an e-reader but even with it not-rooted it's still actually a pretty good experiance.
Sorry Icouldn't be a trailblazer to anyone getting a proscan and wanting to improve on it.
a noob, but I honestly have tried...

ok, I have tried very VERY hard to find out how to root my proscan plt7044k. I've tried following the few links that I have found, and have found them to be broken. Or the items just won't download onto my computer or just flat don't work. It appears that what I have to do is to find a driver for this thing so that my computer can recognize it, and the Curtis website doesn't give any driver information. Yes, I did download their manuals and tech material, and they DON'T WORK. All they provide is a powerpoint thing that says to "find program x, do y, etc", without providing that program. I cannot find a driver for this p.o.s. ANYWHERE, nor any that would work for an earlier model and then also "might" work for mine.
I really want to get rid of the "getjar" crap, as well as all of the bloatware that google puts into these things!

You probably have a driver problem. I use ADB Konnect (wireless ADB) To push over wifi.
Is there any possible way to flash a custom ROM to it the factory ROM has too much crap on it memory wise?

I Titanium backup to uninstall the bloat. You also can use Root explorer or adb to rename the apk extension of the bloat to get rid of the eyesore

proscan 7" tablet.
you kngoo root, make sure your using windows...anything past vista.
i used wkindows 7 or 8 from an internet cafe and my proscan is plt7602g and it worked fine...i even reset from the android service menu (green dead dude) and it worked but make sure most of all that you have the verify apps off so you can root it. because it will still be a danger to ur tablet. there is always a bricking chance, one you instakll kingoo root and run the program plug in ur tablet press root and the app takes care of it all. and if you google kingoo app or kingoo root it will show a main website and go from there
i got my proscan PLT1077G and i haven't found a **** yet i want to change my tablet android OS but don't have a developer who can help us with this one i think proscan is not that popular
