Messaging wont start - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday my Vibrant crashed and now I can't start messaging. When I try to, the screen goes black and after a few seconds, I get the message "the application Messaging (process com.Android.Mms) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again", and then closes very quickly, before I have the chance to tap "force close". Any solution?

didnt restore messages from a different version did you, like 2.2.1 to 2.2 or 2.2 to 2.3
i did that coming from 2.2.1 and restored on 2.2 and my messaging force closed, if it is that reflashing would fix it
just a suggestion, better to have more than less

Yeah, thanks! However, I'm still working on getting clockworkmod to work, so I haven't flashed any roms. Yet.
So in other words I still have no idea what's going on haha

use rom mansger to flash it then reinstall packages twice in the stock blue recovery if you havent already

if you can't get CWR to work... then download a nightly, lastest or old doesn't matter i don't think message app has changed at all...
so anyways
download it.
extract apk from system/apps
and then replace on your phone..
just wondering... why are you still using stock messagning app? everyone i know has moved on to go sms pro or somthing else.
edit: oops why did i just assume u were using CM7 lol, anyways just replace the nightly up there with your rom, and do the same thing.

What do you mean, "the nightly"? (the nightly build? Of what?)
Also, I got my phone three days ago, so I still use stock messaging. If there's a better alternative, I'd love to get it. What do you guys suggest?

You can try Go SMS Pro from the market - it's really good.
Are you on the Samsung ROM? I thought you were on some other one, ignore the nightly parts...
have you done anything with your phone like flash other ROMs?
If not, there's an app called Bloater, if you search a bit on the themes / apps section you can find it, and then get the messaging app, im pretty sure it has it in there.

I'll try sms pro. I haven't used any other roms yet. I'm on the Samsung Rom. I've tried to flash clockworkmod, but it didn't work. I'll try bloated...

Strange... I tried go sms pro and handcent sms, and they both crashed in much the same way as stock messaging. I also got similar errors.

Well, now we know that its YOUR issue, but I'll try and help.
First of all, the stock Samsung ROM is very buggy, and will become laggy after a week or two, maybe a month.
So i suggest you switch to a 2.2, or a 2.3 rom.
We do not have OFFICIAL 2.3 from samsung so we are relying on Cyanogen, a team that makes AOSP (free of all touchwiz) ROMS called Cyanogen Mod, or CM7 as in version 7.
I'll get you started off by teaching you how to use ODIN. Odin is important in the world of flashing. ODIN will get your phone back from soft bricks, and sometimes, rarely, hard bricks- MAYBE.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111
that thread has most of the stuff you will need.
ignore the ROMS section and downwards, the thread hasn't been updated in a while...
Go into the Vibrant Dev. section and look at some ROMS that you like.
Gingerbread (2.3) roms do not have perfect battery life right now, but its getting to the point where its just as good as froyo.
You are on 2.1, very outdated, and since its touchwiz, it will get sooooooooooo laggy.
Root yourself with Superonelickroot program, and then get app ROM MANAGER and flash yourself a clockwork recovery, put a ROM on your phone, and then install.
First decide which ROM you want, because if it's a 2.2, it's different than 2.3.
Thats not the only thread, but I can't find the exact threads to help you out with right here...

First off, thank you so much for all that information. My phone is already rooted. I can't get clockworkmod to work, but I will try odin. CM7 was my Rom of choice in the first place, but before I'd flash it I'd like to get clockworkmod working so I can do a nandroid backup. While your here, do you know of any battery efficient roms that I can flash for when I'm travelling and such?

Battery efficent... hmm
If you're not in a hurry, I do suggest you try out CM7 WITH Glitch kernel, without it cm7 has bad battery, but i just tried it and its giving me pretty good.
If you travel frequently, Maybe Froyo 2.2 is best for you.
Now about your clockwork issue, whats the problem? any errors?
Get Rom Manager app from market
grant root access if it ever asks you.
top choice select it and then flash Vibrant CWR, BUT- AND BUT if you're going to try CM7 as I said, flash the Vibrant (MTD) their both there for choice.
It will download and flash by it self.
Now I hope you know how to get into recovery mode for now, because later on in every rom, theres a option you can just choose to get into recovery.
Anyways if you don't...
Hold up and down volume, and power button for about 5 seconds until phone turns on, and then let go, wait a few seconds and a recovery should pop up
press -REINSTALL PACKAGES-
this will replace normal recovery with the clcokwork
then after pressing reinstall packages, it will reboot back into recovery again, same screen, press reinstall packages again, now it wont reboot, but will go into a deeper version of recovery CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.
there you go, now thats what it is.
Now if you will flash CM7, go wipe the cache
and then ADVANCED > wipe dalvik cache
now install zip
install zip again or choose or something
and then find your rom and flash.
there you go.
After flashing a rom, let it sit for 10 minutes, it usually lets the ROM calm down and stop setting up and it works great.
You should let me know which rom you pick, if you want terrific battery, then its froyo for SURE.
I havent been on froyo in a while, but when i did, Trigger was my absolute favorite, if you can't choose, make a thread.
Wow havent typed that much in a while.
haha

Ok, i tried to install clockwork mod and I got the following error
"E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation abored"
However, i found someone with a guide on how to use Odin. So I'm probably just going to use that, unless you know of a way to fix ClockworkMod.
Thanks again!
EDIT: Fixed the problem! I restored to stock firmware with odin, as i was getting a lot of problems. I'm now running Cyanogenmod 7.

are you on 2.2? because the stock 2.2 that Samsung gave was protected so you couldn't do the clockwork etc.
Yep, use the ODIN thread you found and odin back to 2.1, root using superoneclickroot, and then do what I said and then you can flash clockwork.

Please help: Booting into cwm...

Ok, i really don't want to odin i want to see if i can fix this without having too.
I'm petty sure this started because i was deleting zips i didnt need such as old ROMS and what not, and i accidentally deleted update.zip which i figured wouldn't matter since i'm already rooted. Well i tried to boot into Clockwork to flash a new rom and it went to android recovery, no biggie, i hit reinstall packages like i always do and it gave me an error. Well i unrooted the phone, re downloaded the update.zip and re rooted it. Then i tried to get into clockwork again, through ROM manager and holding the power button and using that recovery option. As soon as it gets to android recovery it says.
E: can't open /cache/update.zip
(bad)
installation aborted
and this time if i hit reinstall packages it just reinstalls the update.zip over, everytime...I've flashed countless ROMS and all that for months now and i've never had this problem, yes it is clockwork is flashed in rom manager and all that, so i have no idea whats going on.
Please someone.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
you deleted something important most likely.
did you install ROM MANAGER and click the first option "flash clockwork"?
if not, try that.
if yes, you MUST odin to get back your system files.
Odin is really easy if you know to use the right files, ive done it once and its been easy since then.
Yes clock work is flashed. I've used odin before also, but only on a bricked phone. Will I have to do this different?

shouldn't have to just grab a stock ROM and then install that, and BEFORE flashing your other custom ROM, just root and install rom manager, and install clock work.
you know, just in case that it still doesnt work you dont waste your time flashing a rom.
Tell me if it works or doesn't. never faced this problem before.

[Q] NERO v3 Install

So i rooted my phone and installed clockwork rom manager and downloaded nero v3_voodoo.zip and put it on my phone..boot into recovery mode and now i get
--Installing: SDCARD:/Nero_3_voodoo.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
and it stays like this for hours.
Thank You
Which rom/ version are you coming from? Can you boot up normally, not in recovery?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
you rebooted into ClockWorkMod Recovery, right?
@Fearless yes.
@jrod from stock and yes i can boot up phone and it works normally it just doesn't flash the new rom
Weird
I want to say that I had this problem @ one point. I think I downloaded a new copy of the ROM. Sometimes the download get corrupted at one point or another. Have you hit boards.teamwhiskey.com? or head to the IRC chat channel? they have a GREAT support community.
I really hope you ran a titanium backup, or else you will loose all apps. I really suggest springing for the paid version, because the restore is only one click.
ok...try re-downloading the ROM again and see if that works
@led Thank You!
@fearless
Downloaded update.zip to root phone did that blah installed clockwork mod app granted superuser always, clicked flash clockwork did that, copied nerov3 onto sd card opened clockwork selected reboot into clockwork recovery once in recovery i selected the zip i wanted to update to which was nerov3voodo.zip clicked yes and it finds and opens it fine just soon as it hits installing it gets hung up for a long time hours so i just pull out the battery and boot back up to normal android with root
Im not 100% positive if this is required or not but when I flash a rom I always start from stock rom, then use samsung mini kies to update to Ji6, then flash the rom of ur choice. I did nero v3 that way too.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I did the same as jrod after a soft brick recently....
mac
is there kies mini for osx?
Ur gonna have to research a lil cuz it wasn't easy to find, at least for me it wasn't lol and im not sure if there is kies for osx. Again im not sure if this routine will fix ur problem I just know it never fails for me. The one time I did flash straight from stock rom, it was a different rom (not nero) and it worked but it seemed real buggy. I say this cuz I flashed the same rom twice, once from stock JFD and once from JI6. Coming from JI6 seemed much smoother

Wait a minute, the way I'm reading this Nerov3 was on the SD card and not the root of the phone?
If that's the case both update.zip and nerov3.zip have to be on the 16g root memory of the phone, not the SD card.

Haha aite. Ima fill u in. But it might be a difficult to follow, lol:
1) I began by installing the custom ROM "[ROM] Vibrant AOSP ish JK2 1.1 Official FROYO". I had done the back-ups with Clockwork Mod and whatnot. And I also installed the BusyBox.
2) So I successfully installed the custom ROM. However, I read that there was an issue with SD Card's not working??? So I found the .zip file that fixes it and I put it on my SD Card. I then launch into Clockwork Mod, but it freezes on the Vibrant screen. It just boot loops. So I guessed I bricked it.
3) I try numerous times to ODIN it back to stock. It somewhat worked. However, after the Galaxy S screen, it just turns black and nothing loads. Like the interface doesn't show up.
4) I then restore it to a previous state through Recovery. But now, the SD card issue is still present. Like, I can't update/download any apps.
5) I find NERO v3 and I put it on my SD Card. I boot into recovery, and try to install it through there.
6) As I try to install it I get that,
"E: Failure at line 12:
copy_dir PACKAGE:data DATA:
Installation aborted." message.
IF ANYONE CAN PLEASE HELP ME, IT WOULD BE GREAT!!!! Lol.
Hi guys so i planned to upgrade my samsung galaxy to custom rom 2.2. i will appreciate if someone can please tell me that which is the best and stable custom rom for Tmobile Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant (US) Version. i heard that Nero v3 with voodoo lagfix is the best so far. Ok ur right that was alot to follow lol. Ur gonna have to start all over and odin back to stock. Make sure you have both the right ....512.pit file that goes next to the PIT selection in odin , obviously. And the ....jfd.tar file that goes in the pda selection. Check the repartition box also. Depends what ur looking for. The newest and reputable ones are nero v3 and axura 2.2.5.7. Nero is a lil more stable but not by much. Axura is a lil more snappier/faster but also not by much. Both are themed specifically to the makers choice so its ur call which to go with. Without customizing anything I like neros theme better but after I flashed blackfroyo to axura I loved it. Also it seems that nero is more customizable but that could be cuz axura just came out a few days ago. So its ur call. Try em both out. I did. Give one a couple days then the other so you can really wee the positives and negatives. DONT forget to disable voodoo if you try multiple roms

[q] froyo/sweet honey

I am fairly new to all this and am wondering if I need to have the stock Froyo installed to flash the new Sweet Honey 2.5 ROM. I thought I read that somewhere in the development forums. I am running Bionix 1.3.1, and the battery drains so fast I am looking for something else to try. If I Odin back to stock before I flash Sweet Honey, does it matter what I was using before? Thanks.
Noo you dont need to do nothing...just flash...if you odin back you will lose root...just flash the rom and thats all
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Yup, no need to Odin back unless you are having major issues. Just follow the installation instructions in the thread step-by-step and you shouldn't have a single issue.

I actually just switched from Bionix 1.3.1 to Sweet Honey to try it out and had no problems flashing it. Just make sure to do it from Rom Manager as suggested in the op.
Flashed it last night, and it is working like a champ. The only thing I couldn't do is install the updated G-mail app. When I hit the install button it says it is not installed. I have the most current G-mail app from the market, but I loved the new G-mail icon and would like to get it back. Any suggestions? Thanks.
I flashed sweet honey and i have problems receiving phone calls. then i flashed back to bionix 1.3, and i had alot of FCs. then i tried B 1.3.1 and still had force closes. so now im back to sweet honey. cuz odin wont reconize my phone in download mode
Now that you mention it, I haven't received any calls yet. I tried calling my phone from another phone, and it rings once and disconnects. Did you find a solution? Anyone out there have a solution? It's kind of important to be able to receive calls. I can initiate a call with no problems.
No i havent found a solution. im still trying to get my pc to reconize my phone in download mode. my phone is really messed up lol

You two may want to send a message to Explodingboy and see if he can figure it out. I didn't seem to have that issue. My only question would be did you guys flash it like he suggested or did you just flash it through Clockwork recovery? My flashing addiction has taken me to Jellette's Atriarc rom which seems great as well.

Where in the process are you getting these errors? There are multiple steps to installing ICS that this could occur. What ROM are you running right now? If stock, is it 2.1 or 2.2? Do you have CWR installed? Is it installed with Update.zip or through ROM Manager? Did you flash CM7 before ICS?
Simply putting that you got this error is not enough information for us to diagnose and help.
Edit::: also please don't spam the other posts with "Good" or "Great to hear that" to get your post count up like was done in Themes and Apps section. There are many threads to that you can post in to get the count up legitimately.

you have to make sure your rooted
then install ClockWorkMod recovery onto the phone,
then install CM7 after it boots back to recovery
then wipe data and cache
then install ics passion wait for it to boot all the way back to recovery for the last time
install the clean up patch and the phone will work perfect

what if you didn't let let it settle for 20 minutes? I didn't most of thing seems alright, except that the dial keys seem to be sticky if I hold it a hair too long, like when you try to do quick dial, the key will stay selected and you can't dial other numbers until it unstick.
I'm using Passion 13, not sure if I have kiss 2.2.
A question for everyone: can't Passion 13 or ICS for Vibrant in general let you assign phone number for quick dial? You have to use direct dial widget?

Usually a boot into recovery, fix permission and wipe cache and dalvik cache will clear this up. But sometimes it is just a bad download too.

It is always a good idea to let the phone go through a "settling" period after you flash it. There are RAM tweaks to finish, media scanning and a host of other things that need to be completed as you just installed a completely new operating system on your phone. Especially don't log into Market or Titanium and start restoring as this can cause problems long term. What is 20 mins compared to problems and hassles for the next few days/weeks.
If you don't know if you have Kiss 2.2 on your phone, then you don't have it b/c you have to flash it. See HERE

When trying to flash ROM... It is stuck on the Reboot Screen...HELP!

Hi there,
I tried to flash a new rom and it some how is stuck on the reboot screen.
Any help in what to do, would be great!
Thanks!
Pull the battery, put it back. Hold button combo to boot to recovery. Flash the ROM again but do not wipe. Reboot and you should be good.
FFR please list which ROM you are coming from and the ROM you are flashing.

Thanks, for your help!
I ended up taking out the battery, and then rebooting it, and it went to the Recovery mode.
I actually did wiped everything all over again, like you were doing it from the start originally, and it seemed to work fine.
I cant even remember what I was coming from, I had it on my Phone for almost two years, and it was old and the battery life was terrible.
I tried RemlCS-JB its not bad, but I think I am going to try another one. Any suggestions? I have been away from this forum for over a year, so anything recent with good battery life and good GPS is ideal.
The rom did not seem to come with an app downloader such as google play, or Clockwork manager.
Anyone know how to get into reboot recovery mode without clockworkmanager?
When I try to download clockworkmanager online it does not let me really download it.
When I try to install a new Auxura rom it states the following:
It says Installation aborted
Above that, it states please switch Edify scripting
Anyone know, if I have to do something else? I am just doing a normal Clockwork Flash.
I wiped the data/factory set, then tried to install the rom

Did you Odin back to stock before trying to flash a ROM that is a previous version of android? It could cause a lot of problems if you don't Odin back to stock first!
Did you flash gapps on the ROM that you said was missing apps etc?
Gapps is a package of Google apps that devas can't include in the ROM.
I wouldn't use ROM manager, in most ROMs, there is an option to reboot to recovery in power menu. You can also power down and use button combo to boot to recovery.
I highly suggest reading through some of the dev threads for any ROMs you are interested in. It will answer most of your questions and prevent future issues.

Oh yeah, it said to flash GAPPS after, but I never did. Where do you get GAAPS?
No, I dont even have ODIN installed on my computer and all of those drivers, so It is something I do not want to do.
It has been 2 years since, I switched, so I randomly flashed to this new one, but I want to try a different one, but seems to get an error.
Ill try a few other roms to see if they work though.

You can get the gapps from the op of the ROM thread or go to www.goo.im/gapps
As far as Odin etc
If you are on an ICS or JB ROM and want to go back to a froyo or GB ROM, you need to odin to stock first.
General rule of thumb, you can flash up but to flash down, Odin to stock first.
