Unlock and update to gingerbread without losing data? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is this possible?
Sorry if the answer is obvious but this forum has gotten messy as hell.

Upgrading to GB possible, but unlocking no. The fastboot oem unlock command wipes data.
titanium back up and my back up root are your friends.

If you are stock 100% and you will do an 100% stock update, I don't think you will loose any data.
But in that case, I don't know if you will be able later to unlock your bootloader if you want.
If you want to unlock your BP and install a custom rom, then read carefully all instructions. In that case you will loose your data. Use titanium backup, to backup, and then restore them back(except fingerprint data - uncheck it)!

Is pro really necessary? I really can't afford it at the moment.
And I have experience with custom roms on other devices. Tried out one of the p-roms a while ago and it was garbage. I'll be waiting for cm7 or MIUI.
I'm also not completely stock, I'm rooted.
Also, does the data wipe include everything but the sd-card?
Also, also, is there a stock gingerbread zip I can flash after the unlocking?

Can Titanium pro backup app's settings?

Pro is not necessary. You can use the free version. The Pro version let's you restore with one click whereas free version wants you to make more clicks. Also, do not backup and restore system data/settings, and only app/data.

I backed up all my apps and system data. after upgrading to gingerbread I chose to restore individual apps. How do I restore my text messages without restoring all my old system data?

Not sure TiBU can.
When I back up, I backup apps/data with tibu and sms/various other stuff with my back up root.

Does anyone know of a stock/rooted gingerbread zip that can be flashed after unlocking?

If you are rooted (to use Titanium Backup), do you lose the root when applying OTA Gingerbread? If so, what's the best way to regain root?

Any chance you can point to a specific thread? There's so much activity going on the Atrix forum right now that it's hard to find things. (Search for "preinstall method" did not yield anything useful.)

Upgrade with data?

I am new to these forms and was wondering if there was a good walk-through/guide for changing your phone data over when you are upgrading to a newer version of the same rom.
Thanks to your forms already I have no problem switching roms but I do have a few favorites I would like to keep updated without starting fresh. Pointing me in the right direction or any advice would be much appreciated!

Don't know what you mean by the "Recovery Mod".
I use the method I outline in my post here; about the middle of my post, in response to PieceKeepr, starting with my third paragraph to him.
"TB" in my post is "Titanium Backup" on the Android Market.
Ya what I ment by "Recovery Mod" was the Rom Manager ClockworkMod. Will check out your post, thanks for the advice.

I'm still not sure what ClockworkMod has to do with merging data, but as long as you know what you mean, that's what's important! Maybe you meant you did a no wipe (Dalvik wipe only) update? Sorry I'm having trouble understanding.
Not quite what I ment but probably the same result. What I did was Backup the whole current system (nand) currently running GSB 2.1 then did a system/data/dalvic wipe and installed the new GSB 2.4 CM7 booted it up with gapps etc. Made sure it was working. Then rebooted and went into recovery and restored just the user data.

Also thanks again for the advice on Titanium Backup it works good and I really like their use of just being able to restore data. I was looking for just an app, however because I am a Designer by trait I only overlooked their program because I didn't like the icon... silly me.

You're welcome. For a long time I swore by My Backup but once Titanium Backup was updated for Gingerbread it actually works better for me than it ever did all the other times I tried it before. Especially with the option in TB's preferences to restore apps to the locations that it backed them up from, since I use Apps2SD to move a lot of my apps to the SD card, so that's just one more thing I don't have to do.

I do like the data restore better on TB and of course MyBackup I did use before but it didn't have the options I was trying to find. Anyways what I did was make a complete system backup using ClockworkMod Recovery, then like I said installed the new version. Booted back to recovery and from the menu:
- backup and restore > - Advanced Restore >
Then I choose my backup "date bla bla"
- Restore data
Thats about it, hope that helps ~ let me know what you think.
I'm lazy, I just overlay my roms each time. I think I've been doing it this round since about GSB 1.6 or 1.7 when I had to do a full wipe because something got glitchy.
Previously when I was on KF, I went quite a while with flashovers.

Ya, it seems to work pretty good, haven't found much wrong with it I do the same as you for the new versions.
1. Make a backup
2. Wipe
3. Install new version
4. Install gapps
5. Boot it
6. Reboot into recovery do the cache2cache
7. Restore data...

Backup apps

Is there a way to back up apps without root? Titanium backup says root required. I want to root my phone but since mega upload was taken down the only files i can find to root would take me all the way back to stock as far as i can tell, and i don't want to lose all my apps + data

Tibu doesn't work without root. And if your phone isn't rooted, then how can you not be on stock? And flashing the whole root packages do not require you to wipe your phone's data, you only have to wipe if your coming from a non stock rom.
Checkout MyBacup Pro. It might do what you are looking for

Razr home and search not working after root, heard other's have this problem

rooted the official OTA on my Maxx using the Razr Utility (batman) and now the home button and search buttons aren't working at all, I've tried the method of deleting my google account as some suggested but to no avail. I really don't want to loose my data but I need my phone to work, help anyone?
Easy way: Make a backup of your data with mybackup pro and flash system again. Try also wipe data n cache.

Hi, man a guide to use mybackup pro isn't really necessary. Get the app on g. play and you'll see.
Just run the app and make a backup of data and apps. It'll be copied to sdcard. flash the rom I've posted earlier after doing a factory reset and erasing internal memory. then reinstall mybackup pro and restore your stuff.
Is that simple.
I'm prety sure you can do the same with TIBU but I think mybackup pro much more pratical.
Let me know if you need something yet.
Cheers

this is a guide from a friend to run RSD lite to flash the rom I've posted before: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1539192

Well, you didn't say what version you have, why you are trying to disable the check or what you may have tried already, so Google is probably your best bet for finding an answer under the circumstances.

The "issue" = the fact that you cannot restore your backup. Just trying to help, no need for hostility. Try using 4ext, like someone in your other thread already suggested to you.

I dont use an Evo 3d so I don't know, does he need a specific 4ext for the Evo 3d? could you possibly supply a link he can read up on to use 4ext? He can restore his back up but not everything from his backup he made, the phone will boot and everything its not just the way he backed it up, when it boots its like he booted into a fresh install. He basically wants all his game data and text messages and customizations etc. back the way he had when he made the back up.

a simple search on XDA turned this link up. install any old ROM, install the free 4ext app, and use the app to install the 4ext recovery. After that, reboot and try to restore your backup.
In the future, use the app called Titanium Backup to backup all your apps and data, so that if anything like this happens again, you can easily install a new ROM, then restore each one of your apps and all of your data. Good luck OP.

Old question but i was struggling with this problem myself today as my samsung galaxy trend plus+clockwork mod refused to
recover any backup images by saying "md5 mismatch error" on every image.
The solution is very simple and doesnt require any adb debugging..
edit "nandroid.md5" file in the backup directories, clear all the text and save it as empty.
Do NOT delete the file, but instead save it as empty or if it doesn't exist, create the file and leave it empty.
then try restoring the backups, clockwork mod will bypass the md5 check, and restore the backup.
I'm sorry I don't have cwm.... But any recovery I've used has had an option to disable the check in the advanced settings.

Create an UPDATE.Zip

Hi guys/gals. I have just rooted/unlocked my Atrix, and am flashing new ROMS. One thing I have run into though is the fact that these new ROMS don't come pre-installed with all of the apps that I want. So, I was thinking I could create an update package that will push all of "my" apps that I use on a regular to the ROM I just flashed instead of installing one by one via play store. I followed the advice posted by a Senior Member here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732957 but this isn't working for me. When I attempt to use CWM to install this update.zip file, all I get is updated failed. I do not see the reason for the failure, just that it failed. Can a more experienced user here, assist with what I am doing incorrectly please and thank you.

OK, I see your problem. You're using a way outdated procedure for creating flashable ZIPs. That is a procedure for creating Amend-based ZIPs which have long been abandoned, only Edify-based ZIPs are supported now. I think your best bed would be to get some ready-made flashable ZIP (of some ROM for example) and modify it according to your preferences.
What about using one of the app backup apps? like what i do is i started on gb, used go backup pro, backed up the apps and data for the apps. then i switched roms, reinstalled go backup pro, and restored the apps and data

I attempted this procedure with zip me, but when I went to actually install the zip created with this app, It said install failed. I know Titanium Backup Pro (paid edition) offers this solution, but I do not have a full paid version. I *thought* it would be simple enough to just create my own install script as I have the .apk files needed, just can't get the script set-up properly.
