Can you disable the screen capture in TW rom? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I like the feature, but my daughter has taken about 50 pics today while playing games. So, can you just disable it?

You may be able to freeze the app in titanium backup. Im not running tw so cant say for sure.

Hahaha, I know what you mean man, I have taken quite a few pictures trying to click on the multitask button.
I would also like to know. I just took a picture!! Damn SwiftKey tablet app. Spacebar is too close

Freeze the screncapture apk or rename/delete it if you have root access.

I agree, it's an example of a nice idea with bad execution. I have taken at least 10 screen captures this weekend by accidentially hitting that button.

It's how samsung designed it and if it bugs you just root the phone and freeze the apps with titanium backup

this is just how android works. it loads up many apps on boot, and in the background even when you didnt not open them, so that it is faster the next time you need to use said apps. some people hate it, but the bottom line is there's nothing you can do about it except remove those apps from your phone. its just how android is built.
You have problems with RAM ? I use like 10% most of the time.
Free RAM is wasted resource. Stop thinking of things in terms of how Windows work with it crappy resource management system previous to Windows 7.
Well, if the RAM used for these apps could have been used to store apps that I really USE instead of apps I don't us, the useful apps could have been started quicker... (and apps I have used recently would not have been kicked out of memory so fast.
do not worry about that.
just uninstall the apps you never use.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again they need to make the system *really* clever by having it learn what apps you use the most and load the relevant processes rather than stuff which is unlikely to get used.

Captain Obvious speaking here , forgive me: If you have the weather widget on screen , or those live wallpapers that link with weather, your accuweather process needs to run.
And any app that has notification mode (like yahoo) will start up on boot, check what it is supposed to do ("are my notifications on or off?") and then recede to background if there is nothing to do or if the notifications are disabled.
If after boot you press and hold the home button, tap "task manager" then switch to the "ram" tab - does it show that you are using all 800 or so MB of memory with all those background apps? Probably not.
what annoys me is that at bootup it loads up apps i use once a week or so and makes it take ages before the phone is usable. fine, keep it in memory once i've used it but don't load everything at bootup ffs
we really need a msconfig type thing to stop this.

this sounds like its your first android phone. you arent the first person to notice this and be unhappy about it. this topic has been beaten to death in the android world. there are utilities you can do to remove broadcast receivers upon startup etc as well as tweak the internal memory algorithm numbers to be more aggressive. but in the end you are going against the OS. its best to remove any app you dont use and dont want starting up like that. and if you need root for that, then this just goes to show why so many people love getting a pure android nexus phone, because this type of nonsense doesnt exist there. its pure barebones elegance, with the OS working precisely as intended. zero samsung bloatware.

My sgs2 takes about 18seconds to boot to be usable thats good for a smart phone my x10 took about 40 and my old x1 was even longer.

my 2nd actually (desire last time round), rooted both, same annoyances in both - not HTC bloat, or samsung - the fact that i can't have control (key word here) over my phone. i mean if i wanted an OS without options i would have gone for an iphone!
i've tried a few apps that claim to stop apps booting up but they all fail.
as far as removing them, why? a simpler solution would be to stop the damn things running all the time. i don't use photoshop on my PC daily but i'm not going to install/uninstall the thing as i use it. it should just sit there waiting to be ran not doing anything at all until that moment.

still a long time when you're looking at the screen wishing it would hurry the hell up. seriously, count it. boot up your phone in front of someone with winmo 7 or an iphone then, after it turns on and you see the first glimpse of your homescreen say - it'll just take another 20 seconds or so. 1...., 2..... 3..... 4..... 5...... etc etc etc.
it's annoying and bad practise from an "instant on" standpoint. i want to turn it on, type in pin, see homescreen and hit a shortcut and have it load. not have to other stuff i wont use that day to load in the background first.
------
anyhoo - this is something that annoys me - big time ...obviously
yeah its just something that you're gonna have to live with. its just the way android is designed for better or worse.
If you have root, get an app called Gemini app manager, its free and you can tweak the autorun settings for anything.
That not the OS caching in ram(good) but stuff you dont need running and using cpu etc(bad).
Just be carefull about what you tweak and backup etc.
Surely stock apps don't each that much battery right? my ram is usually 200MB-300MB / 1GB and I'm using a brand new SG2 stock firmware / unrooted and the only widgets i have are pictures/weather/google search.
Even though social hub, digital clock, etc still run in "Running applications" the list is pretty small...

Hulu finally! Rooted or Not

I came across this app at the market that was just put up today called DroidLu.
This app will allow you to watch Hulu on our SGT 10.1 without needing any flash hack! It costs 99 cents I would have paid more for this since it made it possible for me to watch Hulu! Now 3.2 has come to our tablet previous hacks don't work.
I can confirm it works!
Currently on Tsk650 V5 GT-P7510
Note that Hulu only works when you run it through Droidlu app. And make sure that you have latest flash player 11

It's barely an app. It's very difficult to scroll on the progress bar, very difficult to adjust the volume. The worst part is that the return button doesn't take you to the previous page. So you have to start all over again when you click on the wrong button. If you hit the lock button, you also have to start all over again after unlocking. So, if you want to want the show from beginning to end without interruption, without any misclicks, without jumping forward or adjusting volume, this is the app you want.

Has anyone gotten this app to work on a 3.2 ROM? I've tried it on overcome 2.0 and Task 5.0, 5.1, and 5.2 with no luck. When the video starts to load it just closes.
Any one else?
You can get hulu to work using the old method. You just have to remove flash, copy the old .so to /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer, reinstall flash from the market, then use a hex editor to change the plugin variable AND to WIN. I am running galaxy task 5.3 and I just watched Castle without any problems.

My experience today:
Search the market for "DroidLu" and it will bring up an app called Flash Video Browser by Dan Lockard for just under a buck. I just found out about it on droidforum, installed it on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it works! I'm watching Modern Family right now!

Yep, just installed and it works perfectly. I'll give his FlashBrowser a try in a sec, because this is definitely worth $0.99!
EDIT: Spoke too soon. FlashBrowser shows as not compatible with my Verizon 4G LTE tab. I'll stick with the old DroidLu APK (linked above, working) and see if there's another way to donate to him.

Widget Locker/ unlock to aftermarket launcher.

Just wanted to let every body know Widget locker works great on the Nook Tablet.
Since we can't make the Nook button go right to a aftermarket launcher, I started to play around with widget locker. You can get it from the amazon appstore for $2.99
I set it up so I Have a short cut to go launcher right on my lock screen.
Also if you go to advance setting and click always unlock to home. You will also get the popup where you choose which home to go to and you can select Use by default for this action.

That app worked alright, I jammed up my gmail with it though, I had about 10 emails that got stuck on sending for like ahour while it super heated my phone. I wound up rebooting to stop it, it prolly was most likely some in my setup of my extremely modded phone though.
It did work great using backup to sd, then astro to share via dropbox!

[Q] How to know if phone camera is a spy?

This might sound wierd, but:
How can I be sure that there is no program or website taking photos or videos
from my phone camera, while I regularly use it or browsing??
I mean, I have used IP webcam to broadcast the video from my android tablet to my ubuntu laptop, and it even has a hidden mode.
How are we sure that there is no some app or webpage duing something like that??
This question also comes to my mind, because the laptop webcam has a blue led that turns on when the camera is in use, but there is nothing in the tab?
Check whats running in the background.... and check the permissions of the apps installed on your phone.. thats it

Your post was correct and to-the-point, no doubt about that.
What I am saying is that by enabling this paranoia, we are doing more harm than good.
And this is not uncommon in Android. For example, many apps require permission to use camera. Gallery apps, photo editing apps, social network apps, you name it. It's simply so that they can have a tiny little button that says : "Take a new photo".
If a developer wants to capture photos without you knowing, he can do it and his app can look pretty legit too.
See where I'm going with this? It's high time we started saying things the way they are.
So, I stand by my point.
@OP: no one wants to see pictures of you THAT bad.

I agree. One thing some android users often seem to skip is the bit prior to app installation where it says exactly what features the app can access. If they see something suspicious there, say a live wallpaper that can dial phone numbers for example, they can just not install it.

What do you lose when leaving stock OS (Touchwiz)?

Hello,
I've been on stock kernel/OS since I bought my unbranded I9100 some time ago, that means Gingerbread 2.3.4, I9100XXKI1, Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468 (rooted, of course).
I'm thinking about trying CM9 or CM10, just for fun. I think I know pretty well what to expect, but am trying to figure out if there are things I will be missing. As far as I can tell, the following will change significantly:
- Touchwiz launcher replaced, of course. No biggie.
- Swype will be gone, right? I played around with CM way back, and there seemed to be some discussions about how to take Swype with you, but I assume this will be rather hard when going from Gingerbread to JB? Or is there a good way to keep it (without buying it separately)? I like it rather a lot...
- The four hubs (Social Hub etc.) will be gone. Good riddance, as well, I've never used any of them.
- I've not used any of the Samsung remote features (to locate a stolen/lost device; OTA, or KIES), so I guess they will be gone, but I won't miss them.
Is there anything else I've missed that's been added by Samsung? I want to avoid a problem where I don't actually notice anything important missing at first, and then noticing weeks later...
Thank you for your time!
I noticed my camera was missing on one of them.

You could use titanium backup to backup all of your (system) apps. If something (important) turns out to be missing, you can restore it easily. Apart from that, flash it, you won't be disappointed. Good luck with exploring all the possibilities.

Apps only in touchwiz wont work in aosp roms since they are deeply integrated within the touchwiz framework, so no use backup app system apps nor system data. Restoring system data may cause problems ranging from bootloops to force closes.

Alright, the clock. I use that a lot, all of it (alarm + timer + stopwatch). That would be a bummer to loose, I guess there will be some useful replacements on the market though.
There are plenty of camera apps around. Can I safely assume that the picture quality (as it is) will be the same as with the stock camera app? I use the camera for taking pictures, I need no effects, online stuff etc. around photos. In fact I am not that happy with the stock camera, as I find it tough to shoot a photo when I don't see the screen... so I'll be happy to hunt for a camera app that supports some of the hardware buttons for shooting.

Is there a way to see which app is Samsung specific, on the phone itself? Or is basically *any* app that shipped with it either in gapps or by Samsung/Touchwiz?
Thanks a lot, again.

Thanks for the great additions, guys (& gals)!
Swype is free and so is the registration and download. Visit the website on your Android browser.

Hello,
I've been on stock kernel/OS since I bought my unbranded I9100 some time ago, that means Gingerbread 2.3.4, I9100XXKI1, Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468 (rooted, of course).

You will loose different things, but alot of the things you will miss by first boot you can find here on XDA or on playstore.
And you will probably loose your warranty...

CM 9 is not that good.. additionally you lose call blocking ability but you can download the app.. there is an app for everything but you know.. your really gonna miss touchwiz,
I did.. and I would have moved off cm9 by now cause my battery was draining pretty bad on the rom however after 3 days the battery time was back to normal which is weird..
