Samsung Galaxy S II has been designed with Gorilla Glass?No need of Screen Guard?
I have seen 2 sites saying Samsung Galaxy S II has been designed with Gorilla Glass so I want to make sure. http://androidcommunity.com/samsung-galaxy-sii-gorilla-glass-confirmed-20110503/ Lost another site link.is that true?
Of course SGS II has Gorilla Glass. But I am still really confused that it will or will not need a screen protector! I really don't like them but I think it's better to have one rather than scratching that beautiful 4.27" screen. What do you guys think?

OK Thanks and I think it is 100% better getting a screen Protector for safety.It is better to get a Rs.100-500 screen guard instead of spending money on a screen after getting scratch on the screen.I am using 1 already and kept 1 as spare
Scratches WILL occur on gorilla glass, but they are less likely to be seenwhen compared to other screens.
So buy a screen protector.

Hmm..I already ordered the 2nd one from Scratchgard.in, Rs.499, so it's costly, still I've read a lot of users posting that they didn't use any screen protector for more than one year wit GG and also they used it roughly, still no scratches on it. Yes I know Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant but not proof.
I'd like some users to post here who are not using any protective screen and post feedback here, if there is any scratches appearing or not.

There's already a LOT of threads talking about this exact topic. Yes, gorilla glass is tougher than your average glass, but it's not scratch-proof, so I personally don't see the point in taking the risk. Gorilla glass can and will get scratched.
Get a screen protector and never have to worry about scratches, or don't get one and always worry.
Guys i can highly recommend getting this screen protector you really cannot tell that you even have a protecter on your screen,after paying all that money for this phone im not taking any chances.

I have had my nexus one for about a year and it has a Gorilla Glass screen. I don't have a screen protector on and I have dropped it several times on asphalt and other surfaces and I don't have any scratches on my screen. I am waiting for the SGS2 to come out on sprint (hopefully) and I won't be bothering with a screen protector.

good for you but id be more "better to be safe than sorry" and for a few quid for a screen protector like the Ultra Olephobic which you wouldn't even notice it was on i believe it's definitely worth getting.
Does the SGP ultra... have problems with air bubbles or orange skin?

I read in quite a few posts about light scratches, most probably due to the anti-fingerprint coating on the glass. But I wont get a screen protector. In the WM times with resistive screens you had to get one because the screens could get scratches with just your fingernail or the stylus, but they all (even the expensive ones) looked bad. So on my HD2 I didn't bother with a screen protector and don't regret it because after over 1,5 years of intensive use (otherwise it was in my pocket or on the stone floor besides my bed) without any cases or screen protectors, my HD2 doesn't even have one single scratch (and I mean the whole device). I just had to remove the paint of the battery cover because it came off on the edges where I hold it, but I would have done that anyway because it looks better, as you can see in this thread. I hope my SGS2 proves to be as good as my HD2.

No it doesn't, honestly i can barely tell mine is on it really is that good just take time to apply it properly there are videos on XDA which are useful regarding this, i did read reviews beforehand and most were favourable but after applying it i really am impressed with it, scrolling is still as smooth as ever,sure you'll get fingerprints and smudge marks but you'd get that on the screen anyway just wipe it off.

Even though it says that the screen is scratch resistant, I wouldn't take the chance. When I got my SGSII, I went ahead and searched for a pouch and a screen protector. Money well spent!
I have it from 1 month ago, without any protector a no scratches. I transport my SGS2 in my pocket always.
For those of you who say that they aren't worried about their phone scratching because its always in their pocket, I would still recommend you getting one, purely because of the fact that Gorilla Glass is vulnerable to SAND and DUST. Sand particles have a very high hardness rating exceeding that of Gorilla glass, so it will carve up your pretty little phone without a care in the world. Simply wiping the screen cover with a cloth that has a particle of sand on it, can scratch the screen, not to mention the original oleophobic coating Samsung put over the Gorilla Glass, which itself is very vulnerable.
I can also vouch for the SGP Ultra Oleophobic Screen Protector. Hands down the best balance of everything a screen protector should have. I've used some no name brands, the Zagg ones as well as the SGP Ultra Crystal one before, and none can compare.
The SGP Ultra Oleophobic beats the Ultra Crystal hands-down simply because it repels oil much better, and can be cleaned with one wipe of a shirt or cloth. On the other hand, the ultra crystal clings to fingerprints and oil like a fat kid to a candy bar.
Both however, exhibit zero rainbow effects, air bubbles or orange peel effects. For about 30 minutes after putting the oleophobic one on, there is a bit of rubbery/slightly sticky feeling on the protector, but it goes away after some use or a bit of cleaning with a microfibre cloth. I'd also recommend not applying the protector on vertically, from speaker to microphone, but rather, from left to right. It is MUCH easier to align this way, and much easier to retry if you messed up the first time.
I've had many people who've played with my phone ask me why I don't bother putting on a screen protector, and when I tell them to look again, they are genuinely surprised they didn't realize it was there.
TL;DR: get a screen protector, because sand (which is actually harder than gorilla glass) and dust can and WILL scratch your screen eventually. also, SGP Ultra Oleophobic beats everything else hands down.
I think Sammy will send the gorilla glass as OTA update when Android Weedcake 2.5.5 hits the market sometime in the distant future.

well well well talk about fate,there is a scratch on the screen and i only put the ultra olephobic screen protector on yesterday initially i thought it was a hair but it's a very small scratch so im even more pleased now i had this on otherwise id have a scratch, thankfully you get 2 screen protectors so i can just replace this one.

You can always get an anti-glare matte screen protector. I yave one on all my devices, my G2, my Xoom, my EVO. That is the first accessory that I buy.
Of course, I'm assuming you're exaggerating about ditching the phone entirely for that one property, lol.

Its a big thing when in direct sunlight, oleophobic coating is a must for me, especially coming from the NS, had enough of fingerprint covered screens, the nexus s was a joy

Glare is there on Nexus S (not extremely bad though ) even with Oleophobic coating.
Thats not the advantage of the coating though, and glare is not a big deal if display is bright enough.(read AMOLED) You can always tilt it a bit away from light to get the read from the screen.
Problem is smudges. Those oily messy smudges makes it harder to see even if you tilt it away or in the shadow of your hands in bridght sunlight as light refracts and reflects in all directions thanks to smudges.
With coating and reduced smudges, its easier to see. But it does come at a cost.
The Gorilla glass might be scratch resistant, but if there is this coating on that top of it, it will develop micro scratches as this coating gets scraped off if you nick your screen with something sharp. Plain Gorilla glass would fare better in such cases. So its win some, loose some situation. I doubt there will be any coating on the Gorilla glass. If its there, I would be very surprised as it takes away the advantage of Gorilla Glass.
I can honestly say that the standard for smartphone displays is decent enough that I definitly have a couple of priorities above the display that I wouldn't care how good the display is, if doesn't meet those priorities first, I don't want it. Key being carrier, cpu, ram, battery life, size/weight, brand/UI, then the display itself. Like I said, the standard for smartphones is good enough that it's not as important for me as long as a matte screen protector exists for the device (which is pretty much every smartphone). I have yet to meet a modern device display that I cannot tolerate under all conditions. And maybe its just me but I rarely find myself walking under direct sunlight. And even when I do, I try to avoid it (not because of my phone, just I have no joy in it XD).

I agree, I think no matter what, I will be putting a screen protector on it. A company called "ScratchGuard" makes one that resists Oil and Fingerprints, maybe that might be the route, although it does reduce some of the screen's clarity.

Ive allways used a screen protector tbh but im thinking with this device i dont need 1 as its gorilla glass right? i do think screen protectors ruin a phone slightly but its protection, Does this device need a protector or will it be fine without 1?
looking to buy the device on launch day sim-free so would be ideal to buy a protector before if i do need 1,
coming from iphone 4 i allways had to use 1 and it did get annoying and before that the desire hd which i had to use also but that screen isnt made of gorilla glass is it?

I have to. Cant take chances, I took one with Nexus S thanks to Oleophobic coating and kinda regretting it. I use lots of jeans. Many of them have those metal buttons / studs near pocket. I scratched my Nexus S a bit while taking it out of pocket when it scratched against that. Thankfully it was a micro scratch at the bottom and not on viewable area. Not to mention the bloody earrings of my lady friends and family members. My heart skips a beat when unprotected screen nears their ears
I wont take that chance again

A screen protector will totally negate the oleophobic coating so i would not advise that, also the chemicals used to stick a screen protector on it might create holes in the oleophobic coating which will mean you will need a screen protector for life (we saw this many times in the nexus s section)
My advice is,
1. DO NOT use any screen protector at all!
2. buy a protective sock to put your phone into
3. ALWAYS leave it in a pocket that has nothing else but the phone in, inside its protective sock
4. NEVER clean the phone with any sort of polish or chemicals, always just clean it with a dry cloth
If you do these three things you will have a wonderful "as new" phone for the duration of your time with the SGSII )

When i sold my nexus s it was the same condition as when i brought it out of the shop In the house i use a cover to protect the back leaving the front open, and when im out and about i use a sock...

its very true.. my omnia HD has also gorilla glass and I have it for a year and a half now and it was NEVER scratched... XD I even play with it, taking coins and start scratching the screen... lol.. I also make fun of the screen saying even with a knife its not sure the screen will be scratched..

I was using the phone for a few days after i got it without a screen protector. I knew it was gorilla glass and stuff, but something inside kept gnawing me about getting a screen protector.
Just buy a screen protector and have that mental peace.

On milestone and droid 2 global gorila glass I never had a scratch having each one about a year and with no screen protector at all...
Maybe the cover for not having so many finger prints can make gorilla glass less "gorila" on SGS2?

Dammit, yesterday i went to the beach with the phone, sand may be the reason of the scratch
I already have a screen protector, but i didn't set it because there was no reason to me, now i got one
Yeah, I scratched mine too but I've kind of got used to it. It's a little annoying I guess.
Anyway, suppose it's a bit like shutting the door now the horse has bolted but might as well get a protector. Don't they change the feel of the screen though? I've always thought they might be kind of annoying.
As a user of both sgs and sgs2, I find the Gorilla glass on sgs2 to be far superior in every department

You folks are aware that no one ever said gorilla glass is hard as a diamond, right?
In fact, no substantial claims about it's hardness were *ever* made. It's supposed to have a better tensile strength and be less breakable, not harder.
In fact, the treatment it gets plus the oleophobic coatings and whatnot might even make it more susceptible to scratching than regular glass.

You were one of the lucky few with your hd2. I've never seen a screen shatter so easily. I made money repairing the hd2 because it couldn't take a bump.

Shatter or scratch?
There IS a difference, you know.
Hardness and (tensile) strength aren't the same thing.
And they're usually inversely proportional.
Materials that have a high hardness (resistance to scratching) are usually VERY brittle.
Materials that have a high tensile strength (resistance to breaking) are usually VERY scratchable.

My SGS was stronger, but the SGSII's screen is sweeter!

The sooner i receive my screen protector the better, im ultra careful not to have anything else in my pocket like keys or coins when then phone is there in case i do get a scratch,so far so good but after spending all that cahs on this phone it's important to get a screen protector.
This is one of the weak points with our phone, "hard"ware wise.
I also got a small scratch from putting it in my pocket without anything else. Compared I never got a protector for my old smart phone (competitor brand and os ) and only a few small scratches in some years, I was a bit disappointed.
Though, that scratch isn't that bad, and now that my protective foil arrived it can be neither seen nor felt.
But: Without the cheap foil the "feeling" was better

I've just bought a used (UK) S2 on eBay, and am wondering whether I should bother with a screen protector for it. From other posts it seems that there are mixed opinions on the effectiveness of Gorilla glass for preventing scratches (particularly from sand), so I wondered how many people bother with a screen protector?

Gorilla Glass...has got that real nice feel to it...hence no protectors...after 2 months of usages no scratches...just got a coloured frontal screen protector on today though...solely for the visual aspects...rather than protections but nice never the less.
I use protectors as sand will scratch G glass. I will give G glass credit though... It is a hell of a lot more scratch resistant than standard screen coatings.

a layer of film never hurts. at least something gets in the way before it scratches the actual glass screen.

Lots of people have complained that after using a screen protector the phone is no longer responding to touches very well (this can be fixed with a root app though).
There is no real need at all for the screen to have a protector, it is the toughest glass around and there are plenty of videos on youtube of people taking hunting knifes and other sharp objects to their screen with no visible marks being left. Sure it will shatter if it lands on a sharp point but it is not the sort of glass that scratches easily like other phones, removing the need for a screen protector.
Plus the glass is fairly smudge resistant and very smooth to touch.
I fail to see a need.

I had a Nexus One with no case for 17 months, which I predominantly kept in my trouser pocket. Not one single scratch on the glass but had various nicks and dents in the metal frame. Have had my gs2 for about 3 months and already have four big scratches on the screen. So my advice, but a protector.

2 months here, zero scratches.
Start using it without any protector. Trust and experience the good feel of the Gorilla Glass. And by any chance if you see any slightest roughness (rare though) appearing... apply a protector.

I have the SGP Glas just for those crazy moments when something goes wrong. Already busted a Ultra Crystal screen protector with a bad scratch.
Always use protection. Even if it turns out to be a waste, it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

I use a screen protector and my screen is responsive and have no probs at all. good idea to use i think
I like the gorilla glass but it does seem to be a fingerprint magnet... At least with a screen protector it doesn't pick up those damn fingerprints...
My opinion is that anything that can put a scratch on gorilla glass will have no trouble cutting through a VERY thin layer of film you have applied on top of the gorilla glass making it's 'protection' void.

I suggest to use one.. I have no problem with touch sensitivity problem.. Better safe than sorry..

Id get a screen protector anyways gorilla glass is somewhat a gimmick as all glass is easy to scrach and break... Gorilla glass is just a marketing tool imo and have scrached a few in my life
I only had my touchpad for a few days now and I bought a screen protector from Walmart (designed for the touchpad)
Forgot the name ill post it in a few mins...
The general consensus around the net is that it does, many reputable reviewers remark on it having gorilla glass, however these mostly consist of reviews done with pre-launch units that may be different in some regards to the mass-production touchpads.
I dont think HP nor Corning have officially stated that it has, my guess is that some touchpads may have it and others have similar glass.
At any rate, I tried out a screen protector for mine and ended up taking it off 10 minutes later due to a distinct difference in responsiveness and feel. I may have just got unlucky with a cheap one, and your generally better off with a screen protector anyhow
I got a Griffin from Walmart... its alot better than any other screen protector I've used...
And I've used alot on phones and my old ipad

I'm going with "not". My Nook Color, which has never seen a screen protector, remains scratch free after nearly a year and 5 kids abusing it. Within the first month, the kids managed to put a 1" scratch across the middle of the Touchpad. I've since bought screen protectors for it from Amazon.
Gorilla glass is just tough against shocks.... not scratches

Whatever is on it, I have never felt a more slippery device in my life. Both front and back of this thing seem like they exude a lubricating oil that makes it impossible to remain in your hands or be fingerprint-free.
Absolutely crazy.

The actual glass part is coated by HP with a clear solution making it easy to wipe the screen with any cloth, no liquids necessary. It is always so shiny and clean after I do a small wipe. I do also think it is Gorilla Glass, take a razor and try to scratch it . Then again, it IS glass .
I can not believe my eyes when I see that I can actually see scratches on my screen. It only shows up when the screen is oily or fog up. When it is clean, they won't show even under direct light. That got to be some coating getting scratched. Can others provide some insights on that?

yep, welcome to my world, I was being stupid and didn't get a cover for mine...My nexus one lasted for a year after I took off the screen cover with no scratches, I don't know what kind of glass HTC is using now, they say its fortified, it still doesn't mean scratch proof:

we're not sure if amaze is gorilla glass or not, as gorilla says in their FAQ that they do not realease the information of all the phones that have gorilla glass on them...due to agreement between the sellers like HTC. It definitely is fortified glass of some sorts, but yea even gorilla glass gets scratched..
As someone who keeps a single phone for years, I never understood the mentality that says one should have a screen protector. Now hear me out: I understand that the screen protector is supposed to protect the screen from being scratched. If the purpose of not scratching the screen is purely aesthetic, then the screen protector is useless, if not so beyond useless that it becomes an aesthetic liability. Screen protectors are no where near as hard as the combination of glass and coatings that compose the screen itself. Across the useable life of the phone, the thin plastic of a screen protector is much more likely to accumulate scratches than the glass. And so in the end it comes to be that the people who are most concerned about preserving the aesthetics of a mint-condition phone have one that is shrouded by an ugly protective case and a screen protector covered in hundreds of scratches that would not otherwise register on the glass.
But more towards the original concern: whether or not the screen is Gorilla(TM) glass, a similar glass, regular glass, or even pure and impossibly cut diamond, the anti-fingerprint and -reflective coatings sitting atop would not benefit from their scratch-resistant properties. My screen also has this problem. It only shows up when there is significant oil or fingerprints on the screen. I find the latter much more annoying. So I constantly wipe the phone on my pants or sweater and it's back to normal.

I can scratch the "coating" with a new walmart bag. It is just annoying. I am sure htc is using gorilla glass. They used it in their other products. Doesn't make sense they will drop out from that.
I would use a TPU case on the phone because the naked phone is too slippery to hold. Scratches won't affect performance, but dropping it will render the phone non functional.

Point taken but sometimes deep scratches are not aesthetics, its just intrusive to your daily work, so you're better off getting a screen protector, than have a deep scratch in your screen that can cost you a couple of hundred bucks to fix
I had my Hero for about 2 years. I put a screen protector on it right away. After about a month the it looked abolutely terrible. It was marked and scratched and had bubbles. Ugly. I pulled the screen protector off and never put another one on. the screen was as nice the day I sold it as it was the day I bought it. I have no intention of putting a screen protector on my Amaze. The beauty of the screen is, after all, one of the reasons I chose this phone.

Don't make the same mistake I did...you will regret it. I though the same at first. I mean my other phones did fine without screen protectors, but seems like for some reason this screen scratches quick...I'm very careful with my phone and I was suprised to see a deep scratch on it, I had no Idea how!!! just letting you know...I made the same exact mistake and posted the same thing in the accessories section, stated why people were putting screen protectors on their phones, and how it wasn't necessary.

read post 16 and 18 made by me, i thought the same exact thing. even gorilla glass gets scratched , just spend 6 bucks get a boxwave one...at first I didn't like it, thought it was a bit sticky but after using it for a fewe days its smooth as the glass and you don't even notice it AT ALL NowI love it!!! It's exactly like the glass itself!!
Maybe you should mention that in the accessories thread, before people begin to think you still hate Boxwave and then they steer away from it.

Your last is a very good point. I made an oversight. Drop protection cases are useful.
