[Q] Misbehaving App after png reskin - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I have a problem I hope someone will be able to help me with. I decided to try and make the background of a widget from a certain application translucent, so it would better fit with my homescreen. So I just made an empty transparent png file with the same resolution as the original widget background, renamed the apk file to zip and, using 7zip replaced the appropriate files within the zip/apk.
Afterwards I put the modified apk on my internal sd, removed the widget from my homescreen and then with root explorer moved the modified apk to the app directory.
So far everything works just fine and the re-added widget now has a transparent background.
However, every time I turn the phone off or reboot the widget is gone and the application is greyed out in the app drawer (with an sd card icon instead of the real app icon).
If I try to start the application it will say that it's currently not installed.
The only way to get it working again is to restore the app with TitaniumBackup, then uninstall it again (thus removing the grey and the original icon), restore it once more via TitaniumBackup and then finally again replace it with the modified apk.
I have also tried to force TitaniumBackup to backup the modified version of the app but that didn't work out very well - it fails to be restored.
Ideas, anyone?
*edit*
I hope this is the right forum for this question - if it isn't please kindly advise me as to which is.

Thanks for your reply prodygee - I'll see what I can do about it then.
Also, sorry for the shameless bumping.
I'll just let the thread vanish into the depths of the forum now.

Also found some other interesting threads somewhat related to that problem:

WHY does everyone bump his own thread. CHRIST....
You can't just go changing files inside of an APK expecting it'll work. You have to recompile the whole apk.

Just stumbled across this. I had this same problem when i re-skinned a flashlight app.
While i didnt try this im sure it will be your solution.
Take the app, do your edits then follow the steps in this post from step 3 onwards to
sign the apk then install it as usual with a file manager :

[Q] samsung galaxy email apk

i take no credit for this as i found it on the i9000 forums. this only wants on android 2.2 by the way.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=810454
if you replace this apk with the one in your system/app folder, it will work without you having to open the apk and install it. just make sure you back up your orginal email.apk as this one has one problem.
it needs to be resized to fit our phone, we are missing the refresh button at the bottom of the app and it also cuts off the bottom of emails.
what im asking is, can someone resize the dimension of the apk to fit our phone ?
Merci beaucoup monsieur!

I've been using the one by Smoothone since the day after he posted it and am having no problems retrieving my emails from my Google and Yahoo accounts. I'm using Nero V3.
After you push the apk to system\app go to your phone settings, applications, manage applications and find your email app and clear your data and cache. This had solved many issues for lots of users.

WIN.
I'm using the app from Smoothone, the feature set is great and it doesn't enforce my organizations exchange security policy, so I can use it without having to set it to the stupid numeric lock screen, or allow a remote administrator to wipe the phone.

Thanks for finding this. I tried this when it was first posted awhile back and liked it except the size issue. Glad someone fixed it for us. Again thanks for finding.

Open Root explorer
Navigate to system/app
Scroll down to email.apk and change to email.bak (saves apk for later, should you want to revert back) to do that just long press and use 'rename'.
Find the email.apk file that you downloaded, long press it, and then either 'move' it or 'cut' or 'copy' it and 'paste' it back into system/app
Alternatively, I like to copy the original .apk and paste the copy in a created folder called stock ROM apps. Then just move the new .apk over the original one in the system/app file. No need to change the names and you can always go back by copy pasting the old one over the top of the new one.
Hope this helps
I've pushed it, but I can't get it to load my inbox. Deleted the files in App manager, but it still doesn't do anything to load the mails. It keeps saying that it's loading, but never finishes. I was able to send a message to my gmail account with it, but I was not able to retrieve one to the inbox that I returned in reply. The outbox works. The inbox is not.
Any suggestions?
P.S.
How about a black version instead of the cartoony blue that Samsung's got running through TouchWiz?
thanks Much appreciated MonteCristo22

Assuming you copied the email.apk to the root of your internal. Open root explorer. Find the folder called 'sdcard' that will be your internal. Click on that and find the new email.apk. Sometimes there will be a duplicate with a ._ in front of it. It isn't that one. It will just says email.apk and have a little android next to it. Long press on that icon and use the move command.
Then use the back button to go to the previous screen and you should see a folder named 'system'. Tap that file. The second file on the next screen is the app file. Click that. Now at the bottom of the screen there should be a button that says 'paste'. That button became active when you used the 'move' command. Press the paste button and it will move the new email.apk to that folder.

Edit: both apps are ****ed. 2nd has PUSH, but PUSH doesn't work at least with mail2web.com......
Anyone have a different working Email APK file? I can get exchange to work but sbcglobal will not load even though I can send mail with the app through it so it is authenticating.

[q] cognition 1.07 gs2

Really liking the ROM so far. Just one thing while removing the "Samsung Bloatware" I wish there was a way to re-install these as I really like the stock samsung email app. In my opinion it is far superior to the Gmail app as it allows you to pinch and zoom the email.
Does anyone know if there is a place to install this???
Thanks a lot!
In the Cognition thread, there is all the info you need. The link to all removed apps was provided, and you can just download and install what you need. I've included the info below for your reference. Note you need to copy the apk's to /system/app via Root Explorer or similar...you can't install them as normal apk's or they won't work. Just move them to the right place and reboot the phone.
Removed Apps:
(copy apk's /system/app, don't try to install them normally, it won't work)

Awesome, I don't know how I missed this. I re-installed the digital clock! I still don't know what file to add to system/app for the email app to function properly since it says I need to register social hub. So using common sense, I installed the social hub apk but still the same cycle I mentioned earlier. Also does anyone know what the news and weather apk is called??? Thanks again! Happy Independance Day to my neighbours to the south!

Usually DG has his own app in the ROM and on the device that allows you to check off and download which Samsung Apps you want. Its a nice feature. Sort of like an onboard Kitchen.

Email apk *to replace the system APK *Stock gingerbread

I got the email apk from gingerbread up and running on the nook tablet *will update with screenshot. I figured I would try and it worked so no more *****ing about the stock email app being crap. You can now fix it.
How to install:
Download here
Push to SDcard
Move to system/app using root explorer *or free alternative.
change permissions to:
Code:
Read, Write
Read
Read
^ Just like that.
then reboot
and
Enjoy
Don't forget: Backup your stock email apk, just in case.
Does this replace the B&N app when using their launcher too? I'm getting very upset with it constantly re-downloading all of my email...
You need to reboot for it to take effect btw

I'm having an issue getting this to work. Do you have to push the apk to the sdcard, or can you copy/paste it?
Issues here as well. The app isn't showing up in the list. Reverting for now
I already said you need to reboot for it to show.
Rebooted twice. It would show up as Email or Mail, right? Followed all the instructions, permissions, etc.

I did so. I made sure that I followed your instructions. I'm having similar issues with changing out the keyboard, though that may be more related to the apk I downloaded.
Did you guys put it into system/app?
Yep. I used adb because i was already hooked up and working on stuff. Didn't look at logcat because i was working on a compile config.

Of course. After making the /system partition R/W with Root Explorer. Would have preferred to use my own r/w script for /system, but when I got rid of my Droid I think I deleted all of my Android editing/modifying files.

It worked just fine on my tablet and another persons tablet. Check completely through your app drawer for it it should be called "Email"
Got it up and going fairly effortlessly...
the mistake I was making?
I am using Go Launcher Ex...after reboot I looked at E and M for Email or Mail...well, it wasn't there (even though I was sorting alphabetically)
It turns out, it WAS there in my app drawer...it just went to the very last page of my app drawer and was listed after Widget Locker...obviously NOT in alphabetical order, haha
Maybe you guys were also having this problem?
Yep that was my issue as well. PEBKAC. Sorry for the mixup. Thanks for the app!

I found it exactly as described above.
My main issue was that I was initially trying to launch it using the stock nook home apps screen.

Yeah, exactly the same thing happened with me. Go Launcher doesn't always seem to auto-sort correctly.
Not sure if that's an error or feature of Go Launcher but it doesn't seem to happen all the time. Recently downloaded apps are placed at the end of the app draw. I like it cause I down load so many apps, I forget what I've downloaded.
Lately however, I've noticed that new apps appear in order with a little orange label in the upper right corner of the icon - I think it says new.
Awesome! Thanks, Indirect. This worked perfectly for me.
On a side note, this also fixed an issue with contacts. I was stuck with the abysmal stock contact list manager, because nothing else I installed would allow creation or editing of contacts. With the stock email app is in place, I can now use GO Contacts to create and edit contacts.
BTW: email addys open a new email, street addresses open in Google Maps, and phone numbers open chat in textPlus if you have these installed.
the download link is no longer work. Can you send me a new URL?
Thanks
Please ignore my last post. I found it at your other thread.

[Q] facebook app (edit:) build.prop questions

Edit:
I modified this post because this has become more involved than simply the fb app. It has evolved more towards the build.prop file being modified.
Original post:
i tried to download the facebook app from the market, and it's not showing. so i did a titanium backup of it from my phone and installed it on the nt, initially i was able to open it and sign in. i went to a few posts, looked at a few friends, etc. after turning it off, it would force close each time i tried to reopen it. i dont know whats happening to make it force close. i presume since it's not showing in the market, it's communicating with facebook or the market and one or the other is telling it no.
is there anyway to tell the market this is another device so it will show other apps that are not available right now?

Get your Facebook apk from this compressed file found in this post. Once you unpack/unzip it navigate to the extracted apps folder to find the facebook, Twitter etc. apk's
I'm going with dodgepot's method. I've noticed other apps were not available since posting this. This method should clear it up. It will be late tonight before I'll get a chance but I'll let you guys know the results.

Honestly the facebook app is not that good any version, its better if you access it by browser just bookmark the page.

Oppinions vary on the fb app. I like it personally. I did get it to work however. I installed the updated app just fine from a backup of my evo shift. However... I tried the build.prop mod. Nogo. I tried the nexus s and the .... crap.. drawn a blank here... the second mod listed in the linked page. Neither worked. Anyone with experience modding the build.prop file, I have a few questions. In the original file there are more of the ro. fields listed than what are shown on each of the mods. Do these other original lines have to remain in place or should they be deleted? Some of them look to me as if they would conflict with the new lines. Also, what's the endresult of a screwed up build.prop file? Does something other than market rely on this file? If its geeked up, will I brick or have to re-root? Also, I presume this file is something that comes with the 1.4.0 rom. Is this something that could/should be replaced when the root process is taking place to prepare the device for the market? I guess when cm roms, etc. come out they will have there own build.prop that will define the device as something else to the market so more apps are available since google doesn't recognize the nt as a "market" device?

Do not remove7touch the other .ro's of build.prop just change the lines provided. The end result with a screwed up build.prop basically will be that your device won't be recognized by market and certain apps if not all, for ex. airdroid when i login in my browser to access my nook it recognize it as Droid3 because i changed my build.prop to Droid3. You won't brick or have to re-root your device if you mess up with it, by using adb push of the original build.prop is enough. Build.prop can be changed to a modified one before root i did it and worked like a charm.

[Q] Market App not found

I am trying to download an app called Comic Strips by Vasken http://market.android.com/search?q=pname:com.vasken.comics and I am on CM7 so I thought it would work but I can't get the app to show up. It's a free app but it is protected so I can't back it up from my phone and install it. So my question is how can I get it installed? Can I edit my build.prop file? If so how?
There's a thread in the apps forum on modifying build.prop. But did you try just copying the apk out of /data/app on your phone? That has worked for me before.
Sent from my Nook Tablet using Tapatalk
Well I have figured out that it is because the app is protected/private but the better reason is that when I got the app installed following the advice to just pull it from /data/app/ (it was actually in /data/app-private/ though) it ended up being in a little box about the size of a phone screen LOL funny looking but it is useless due to the size I might as well just use my phone for it.
