[Q] Yellow Triangle - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please help as I am extremely confused.
I have a new SG2. I did not root it.
Every time I restart my phone I see an Yellow Triangle with exclamation mark.
Now, as I understand, everyone who gets the triangle has rooted the phone.
Is there something wrong with my SG2?
Kies shows this info:
PDA: KF1
Phone: KE7
CSC: KF1 (XSG)
Thanks.

Does your phone boot? If it boots up, the yellow exclamation point is just when you flash a non signed ROM from Odin. If it doesn't boot and stays at the yellow exclamation, something might be wrong and you need to factory reset to try and fix it...

Did you pay to get it unlocked? If you did... I'd speak with them first, they probably rooted your phone and ran the Helroz unlock version. Then get your money back.

Or send them a lawyers letter asking for £500, because they have invalidated your warranty by rooting the phone without your consent.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

My phone boots normal, I have restarted my phone several times now.
I did not pay to get it unlocked. However, it is possible that the handsets sold here (in Qatar) are unlocked. How do I confirm this. As far as I understand I still have warranty.
Anyway, coming back to the original question, is this good or bad (not considering the warranty factor).

I'm pretty sure that when Samsung has not locked the bootloader flashing a custom rom won't affect the warranty. It may depend on the system of your country though. Here in Finland it does not affect the warranty, or at least did not affect on my previous phones.

Apart from esthetics and the void warranty, it really doesn't matter at all.
It has no "technical effect", it only tells that a non-Samy-signed kernel had been flashed.
Also, there is a list of ways to get rid of it again:
- USB jig
- flash a stock Samsung kernel again via an PC app called "Odin"

Indeed, USB jig works fine and erase download information.
With the jig : current binary is a Samsung official one and custom binary download is set to no.

Ok. I am a pure newbie with this. I am still searching for some explanation on 'kernel' and 'ROM'. I will be most grateful if you could point me to the right direction:
Is my phone rooted?
If no, then I need to root via ODIN and 'flash an insecure kernel' and then use SuperOne Click. This is required to 'flash a custom ROM'
If yes, then I just need to 'flash a custom ROM'.
I have read and re-read the guides posted on rooting/flashing but maybe I am missing something. Can I use any 'insecure kernel' or custom ROM?
Thanks a lot again.

Root is not required to flash a custom rom. The custom roms install kernels that are rooted themselves.

First off, there is no "need" to flash a custom ROM, everything works fine on a stock ROM, even rooting.
The "kernel" the lowest, innermost "core" of the OS, it's the part started at boot and taking care of the rest of the OS to boot up.
Also, by now, you don't need the SuperOneClick route anymore, there's more easy/faster ways by now with kernels that already bring and do everything you need.
You might want to take a look at CF-Root or maybe even my own kernel I just fished
Those take care of everything needed for getting root access, besides flashing the kernel via Odin, nothing more needs to be done.

Thanks a lot!! That was really helpful.
Am I wrong in assuming that a custom ROM would take care of the battery drain issue? or just using a kernel (such as yours) would do the trick. I only wanted to change the kernel/ROM for battery.
Also I looked at your kernel.
Download a build of my kernel that matches your FW/current kernel version und unpack the downloaded archive.
You will get a .tar file. Don't extract that, you need this .tar.
(go to Settings -> About this phone -> look at "Kernel Version", this will tell you what kernel build you need)
My Kernel Version is : 2.6.35.7-I9100JPKF1-CL277308 [email protected]#2
so what build do I need?
Thanks again.

NO a custom rom may help but it may not .
User apps biggest battery drain .

AS THE MAN SAYS.
The kernels are compiled pretty universal, so the KE7 one should work on most 2.3.3 based FWs and the KG2 one on most 2.3.4 ones.

Got it. Thanks.
Although I decided not to flash Kernel/ROM as I could not find any strong evidence yet on reduction on battery drain after flashing. So beats the purpose, I guess. Will keep looking for the evidence though!!!
Thanks everyone.

I can make an explicit KF1 build, no problem
Will do so tonight as I'm also going to make a KG3 one.

The kernel will indeed very likely not affect battery drain.
The ROM however could. There's a lot of people saying on the 2.3.4 based FWs (XXKG1/2/3) the battery lasts longer.
Though, there is no "bulletprove prove" of that yet.

Thanks. Although, I still haven't figured out why does one need to flash a new kernel? I understand it would make sense for developers such as you for more control etc. but for an average user does it give more visible benefits?

I am gonna stick with juice defender for now instead of a new ROM and wait for a definite solution either from Samsung or developers.

Depends on the kernel, what's put in.
CF-Root as well the one I am working on myself for example take care of everything that's needed for rooting after being flashed, no additional actions by the user needed.
It also comes with some more options for customisation, like bootscripts, custom bootanimation, sound and logo.

Ok. Will wait for the KF1 you are making and try it. Would you also suggest a custom ROM.

Vanilla ROM for UGKG2?

Hi guys,
I'm currently running the Bell stock 2.3.3 ROM, I was wondering if there are any vanilla 2.3.4 ROM's for UGKG2 without the bloatware added by Bell/Samsung?
Thanks for your help.

none that i know of sorry.
Get rooted and cwm recovery get a backup and you can delete the bloat yourself (delete the apk's from system/app) can always restore if you delete the wrong thing. theres a good list of apps you can delete somewere round here have a search in the SGS2 forum.
Or buy titanium backup from the market and freeze them (still gotta be rooted tho).
Never mind, I used the XXKG3 2.3.4 generic ROM to flash my Bell I9100, it was easy as pie.

Glad you got it sorted, altho if you dont know the advantages/fun of being rooted its defo something to read about.
If you flashed a generic rom i'm guessing there is still all the samsung apps aka Hubs and other crap still on your phone. these things drain battery there the bloat you speak off. the only other way to rid them is root.
Ya, I'm about to root the phone and remove all that crap.
At least none of Bell apps are installed...
Apps safe to be removed.

Bit of a newbie here, but im assuming XXKG3 file you linked contains all files needed? (modem/csc etc in one file?)
Also is this official or one of the leaked?

Ya, that is the official Samsung package posted by samfirmware.com site and contains all needed files. I just saved you the trouble to register there but you should check their site also.
Awesome! I had already planned in flashing generic uk firmware on my Bell SGS2 (seems UK gets updates first right?) and you made it easier
Edit: How is the GPS on this firmware? Flashing this uk firmware also changes the GPS servers right?
Also, I read somewhere that when you flash a firmware from a different region, you need to manually change the CSC code? i.e. It should say XEU for UK generic?
Check here http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/4692-Full-Guide-How-to-Debrand-your-Samsung-Galaxy-S2 (Step 8)
I don't know why you look at other sites when XDA has always the proper info and all real devs hang here. I never saw someone from XDA copying procedures from other sites and paste them here.
About your question, all I did was described on the post with screenshots, I did not do anything else extra and everything (including my GPS) works as it should. I thought I would see an improvement on the GPS signal with the 2.3.4, is the same old crap... takes forever to wakes up (if you have your wireless network disabled, of course).
Word of warning, be very careful when using .pit file and repartitioning. It's not something that's needed 99.9% of the time that you flash a firmware but increases the risk for FUBARRING the device if something goes wrong.
I agree with Intratech 100%, however I did it with XXKG3 and nothing went wrong because the Bell partition is identical to generic XXKG3 one. I actually got a nice talk with Intratech about that, just to clear the partitioning questions for others.
Oh yeah, you'll probably find the download link for firmwares including XXKH3 much faster for downloading from the firmware thread in the dev forum. XWKH4 which is newer that XXKH3 has also been released.

Just so you know, I redid the *#272*{IMEI}# sequence on my XXKG3 phone and it shows KOR as it did with original Bell firmware.
Can you try it on your phone and see if it says KOR also? I presume you have a stock unchanged phone... Either ways I'm keeping the KOR setting because I want to get generic updates only.

KOR is the default CSC when it doesn't find/install the proper CSC for your region. For the Bell firmware the CSC should show as BMC

Edit: I bought the phone from FutureShop, not from Bell. I swear that I saw KOR when I checked the CSC on my phone originally... I think I was smoking some new stash.

[Q] Received a phone that was Rooted, and wanting to get factory ROM?

Hi,
I just purchased the i9100 from someone today and I'm pretty sure that it's rooted. I checked the kernal and it is (2.6.35.7-RAGEmod-U1-v1.1b).
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Also which files would I need? Do I need to use a USB jig?
I have no idea what I'm doing, there is someone on kijiji (local selling/buying site) that says they will flash it back for me for $100, should I just do that?
Thanks everyone!
not sure what you would do, but what i am CERTAIN about is do not pay 100 bucks... just go to the dev section and read up there.. factory reset (turn phone off, hold volume up, power and home keys simultaneously)
Sorry I wasn't being more specific, but what I wanted to do is unroot the phone. When my phone powers on I get a GR check rom boot logo?
My phone seems to be missing a lot of default apps compared to my brothers SGS2.

Just unrooting the phone should work with SuperOneClick (download to your PC, enable USB debugging on the phone, connect it to the PC and click on the big "unroot" button. If you are running some custom ROM you want to here rid of you will have to flash complete new clean software from Samsung.
But to the missing features: you said you have an older Galaxy S1, oder course there are other (better) apps and a totally new software on the successor, the SGS2.

Yes that's a custom rom, checkrom v5, go to the stock rom thread, pick an upto date rom, ki8 is the newest.
Flash using odin, guide is also in the thread.
That's the only way to remove a custom rom and kernel and restore the removed apps.

You are on a custom rom or a modified stock rom for shure. If you want to get back to stock then you have a thread in the development section that hosts all the stock roms or are links to them at least. Flashing a stock rom will also unroot you phone.
Now as for the flashing part you need to read the stickies search for a youtube video before you do it. You need to understand that flashing has its risks. Although I flashed my phones at least 50 times and never bricked any of them so far you still need to be warned. Its not complicated at all but you need to understand the basic steps. Good luck.

Motorola Implemented RootChecker On ICS

http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ndwich-builds-for-its-phones-purpose-unknown/
According to P3droid, a number of Motorola devices running Android 4.0+ have been imbued with a new feature you might not have noticed: a visual root checker. It's present on the RAZR, RAZR MAXX, DROID 4, and test builds of the Bionic. It operates rather simply. Once a phone is rooted, somewhere in permanent memory, a status change is written that displays in the phone's recovery menu. It works as follows: "1/1" means currently rooted, "0/0" means never rooted, and "0/1" means not presently rooted, but rooted at some point in the past. There is no way to reset this check, at present.

The more nefarious theory is that Motorola's warranty service employees will use this to deny repair or replacement service to defective but previously-tinkered-with phones. It could also result in the buck stopping at the carrier store, where a representative could quickly and easily verify if a subscriber has voided their warranty. Will it be used this way? At carrier stores, I'd say it's pretty likely. But if you send your phone to Moto for service on something that clearly isn't a result of tampering with the phone, I'm not so sure they'd care. Especially under the new Google regime.

yes I cant because I have just flashed it, maybe someone else can check it. But I think it restore the phone to 100% stock. And if that guy in the comments never rooted his phone and still get 1/1, is motorola going to say he tampered with the software when he didnt? They need to check up their ****ing security routines stupid dumb****s
The 2/1 image on AP was my device - no idea why though. I've definitely rooted my device more than twice (probably along the lines of a dozen times!) and i'm running the stock .41 en.eu ROM.
Any other thoughts on the 2/1 statement?

maybe if you flashed a custom rom it goes from 1/1 (being stock rom rooted) to 2/1 (custom rom rooted)?
just guessing though.
from first reports however it seems like the indicator is pretty wonky.
a guy in a german forum i frequent has 1/1 even though he now is unrooted again.

i think thats one of the problems we will have.
what we need is someone with a brand new device who can go through some steps and check how the root checker reacts.
just root a stock rom.
flash a custom rom
reflash stock
etc.
I think this whole story is a made-up paranoid uneducated guess.
I've just totally un-rooted and 2/1 is still showing, rerooted and again, showing 2/1
I'll reflash via RSD this evening and I assume, it will still show 2/1 even though the flashed build is un-rooted.
Hey Moto, if you would just unlock the bootloaders like you said you would we wouldn't being playing these games!
I think you can use fastboot flash recovery.img to reset counter if they really recorded root counts. I'm not sure though. I've got 2/1 on my RAZR. Anyway, my RAZR is almost out of warranty. So I wouldn't care about that count.

That's a really good point! Could anyone try this out please?
Edit: surely flashing the entire sbf via RSD will have the same effect though?
I don't think RSD would fix it...i heard it was independent of anything to do with flashing. That's just an idea though.

Well according to OP, Motorola started to implement it on ICS. If we can refresh from GB boot, system, CDROM and recover images manually and flash ICS OTA again, it would reset the counter i think. I might be wrong.

I've got 2.3.5 stock rooted and still got qe 1/1 on recovery what's the fuss with ICS only?

so maybe this is all wrong after all....
i just copied the news thought someone actually checked up on it already but by the looks of it it seems either totally random or to have nothing to do with being rooted or not....
I am running stock asia retail ICS and rooted (and once only), but it shows 2/1 instead of 1/1
so..i believe it is not really a root checker

[Q] Confusion about rooted GT-I9100

Hi guys, as you can (or cannot) see, I'm a new guy here. Not just here at xda, but I'm pretty much a newbie to android as well. I've gotten a S2 last summer from a friend in Asia to replace my ancient Nokia and it was rooted when I got it through snail mail. I've just rolled with it until now when I realized that the phone could probably do better if I did some upgrading and tweaking here and there after seeing articles about Cyanogenmod and other stuff that came from rooting the phone. From there comes my problem, I'm totally clueless about android. I only know that my phone is rooted since it has superuser, but I have no idea what kind of kernel/ROM it has on it and how I can go about improving it. I'm still stuck on version 2.3.3 because I have no idea on how to upgrade and didn't want to carelessly fiddle with it and break it. So I'm hoping you guys could give me some pointers on what I have as of right now, and what to do in regards to getting things up to date.
The specs (?) of my phone are:
Model: GT-I9100
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband ver: I9100XXKE4
Kernel version: [email protected] #2
Build number: QUENS.ROOT.FIT.ZSKE7
I don't think my phone is attached to any carrier either, if that's normal for the international version.
PS: I apologize if my question and crappy explanation angers some fine and outstanding gentlemen here, but I'm afraid I cannot help that because of my utter confusion and cluelessness.
AW: [Q] Confusion about rooted GT-I9100
So the first question you have to ask yourself is: Do you want to stay on stock (but rooted) or do you want an custom rom.
You can try to connect you phone per USB to your computer, then run Kies there and look if it shows you an available update. If the phone is from china you can have the Sammy JellyBean 4.1.2 update. If Kies does not show you an available update then the reason is your rooted stockrom. You have then to "call" (It doesn't call anybody but you have to enter it in the Phone app) #*1234#, minimize Superuser or SuperSU and look in the window wich appeared for your CSC. In my case there is written "i9100DBTLS7" the important thing is the DBT wich is my region Code. So if you find this code go to: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/ and search there for your region code in the country option. Download one of the Roms and flash it with Odin (there are some Guides online. READ THEM CAREFULLY!!!) So then you should have an completly stock rom on your phone. Connect it to Kies again to see if a newer Rom is available and update if there is one. To root it simply follow this Guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
So this is the way to get the newest available stock rom for your phone. If you want to go custom now you can use the guides written by the Developers of the Rom you are looking for.
I hope thats what you were looking for.

Very usefull and detailed information:thumbup: I only want to add that OP needs to do some serious research to learn more about flashing, rooting, firmware differences and stuff, before he/she tries something
I second Donnie Sins. Watch a few videos to get an idea and DO NOT FLASH ANY ROM/KERNEL/FIRMWARE/PIT FILE THAT IS NOT MEANT FOR I9100 MODEL! You have to be very careful with that. Also learn how to make backups like for EFS folder and nandroid backup. Make a nandroid backup always before flashing anything so that if things go wrong, you can get back to from where you started!
Like you, I too was once confused and overwhelmed by the world of Android.. But after a lot of reading over here at xda, finally got the hang of some important stuff related to rooting and flashing, and most importantly my phone!
For newbies like yourself, this is a good thread to get you started:

Hi. Thanks for the help (Which extends to everyone else as well). I checked through Kies and my phone can't update through that. So then I went on to check the CWC by calling the *#1234# number and it showed me that my CWC is I9100OZSKE7. I proceeded to look it up on the site that you posted and found that it was a Taiwan/Hong Kong region (OZS). So now I'm wondering if I should just choose the 4.1.2 version and flash it? And if I do choose to flash it, is there any other alternative than using Odin? Because I saw that Odin has a chance of bricking the phone.
I also have another question regarding to superuser. My superuser binary seems to be very out of date, and whenever I try to update it, it fails at downloading a new binary.
I have the 2.3.1-ef version installed and the latest as superuser tells me is 3.1.1.
Finally, what is CWM? I have ROM Manager installed on my phone and it seems to be related to CWM.
@shahrozeumar: What is nandroid and efs backup?
PS: Sorry if I look like I'm jumping all over the place with my questions. Right now my top priority is to sort everything out on my phone and get a good understanding of it.

you should go for the custom ROMs, preferably 4.0.3 ICS or 4.1.2 JB, you can find already rooted ROMs out there very easily.-
Hey guys. Thanks to the help of everyone who posted in this thread and some major reading, I've managed to update to 4.1.2, root it, and gain a grasp of the basics. I also tried to install CWM after installing 4.1.2, but it just caused a bootloop. Thankfully I made a backup so I just had to restore back to when I started and repeated the process again.
So here's the thing. Why can't I install CWM without it causing me to go into a boot loop? I looked around and it seems that nobody's had this problem.
Also, I'm not quite satisfied by the current stock rom. While it does run smoother and faster than 2.3.3, I find myself unaccustomed to the new setup and somewhat disappointed at the lack of any major improvements other than the aforementioned smoothness and speed. Widgetlocker doesn't let me use my lock anymore, and I can't seem to get the phone to connect with mass storage mode automatically. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should flash to that offers customization and function? As it stands right now, I can't install CWM on my phone and it seems to impede me from creating a fallback and from flashing to any custom roms.
Are you sure you're flashing the latest cmw?
You didn't notice major improvements? Comparing to what? GB?
Did you flash philz kernel after you flashed JB?
Keep trying, you're on the fastlane.

I didn't notice a lot that was different from GB aside from the faster battery drain and new UI.
Anywho, I've flashed to philz kernel. Now I have another problem. Google Play keeps crashing automatically for some reason before I flashed to the philz kernel, but now after I flashed to the new kernel, Google Play crashes when I try to update superSU. The new philz kernel won't back up either because of an error in the booting image.
Just to clarify what I did. I rooted my phone using the method mentioned here using Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed and then flashed to philz kernel with the instructions form this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270 and used this package PhilZ-cwm6-XXLS8-FOP-4.01-signed since my kernel code seems to be XXLS8.
EDIT: And after all that, I seem to have gotten myself into a bootloop again after using the recovery.
You really need to reflash > factory reset > flash philz.

1. Yes you can flash the latest 4.1.2 when it is available for your region.
2. There is is nother option to flash these files than with Odin. But I can tell you if you do everything right don't uplug the cable and don't shut off your PC while flashing you should be fine.

How to root new stock update (UCLL6)

Does anyone know how to root the new official firmware release from AT&T last month? (4.0.4 UCLL6) From the one post in all xda I could find on the topic. (It was as a side note) it was said the only way is to use ExynosAbuse. (They said it like it was easily obtainable knowledge...) So I tried that and got now where, even though it says that it is expoitable. (

It has also been confirmed that this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181 method works as well.
And if it turns out no root is available for UCLL6, I could resort to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181this method, correct?
You are the second person that has said the ExynosAbuse rooting method does not work with UCLL6. I'm not aware of any way to root that distribution at this time, so yes, you could install UCLE5 plus root.
My brother had he same issue with his Sprint S2 because the patched the exploit in the latest software release. I showed him the framaroot tool and it worked. It's listed to work on the i9100 but I've never tried it on our devices.

Neither of the exploits worked that were in framaroot worked unfortunately, I guess I am gonna attempt to do the other one I mentioned even though my computer doesn't play nicely with android phones for some reason even after I install the drivers (probably something to do with my brother thinking he knows best and ending random processes in task manager and killing startup processes)

I came across Phil's universal rooting method on the i9100 forums a few weeks ago: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794. In theory, shouldn't it work because it only injects Superuser and Busybox into the proper directory and doesn't touch anything else? I've been meaning to try it out, but I haven't have enough spare time dedicated to flashing back to stock and test it.

It's unknown. We can only speculate. There were many reports of damage from the leaks that led up to the first ICS release, UCLE5, but the UCLE5 kernel itself did not produce very many reports of damage. I only saw two reports that could have been memory damage due to the cap erase bug, and only one of those seemed to be even half way conclusive. So it is possible it was even fixed in that release.
UCLL6 appearantly fixes some of the other kernel problems that were present in UCLC3 such as the sleep of death, so it may very well be a clean kernel, but this can not be verified by the developers on xda without original source, which is not available.
It certainly would be the safest route to use a custom safe kernel. And as a bonus, the custom kernels are likely to perform much better than stock as well.
