[Q] overclock with just permatemproot - HTC EVO 3D

ok i got permatemproot on my evo 3d like a week ago and i randomly downloaded setcpu as i had it from my 4g. i opened it and i notice i had some room to move the slider to the right which said 1728mhz and i havent try install the kernel to let me overclock my phone. my question is does by just downloading root let me overclock my phone? im about to run smartbench to see if i see a difference thanks
Edit: at 1.2 i got 1876 and at 1.7 i got 3356 in smartbench. huge difference. any idea y we are able to overclock our phones with out a new kernel?

Because the kernel allows you to do so.

Maybe the script you were using to root automatically copied over the file overclock as well.

Yea i guess to pretty cool

That would be cool if it was the script. What did you use, I'd like to look at it?

What's up everyone?
Just wanting to see if people have been able to overclock past 1.8 successfully. And by that I mean no lag, reboots, and runs faster then 1.2 lol. I remember with the OG Evo that 1.19 was more or less the most you could get out of the phone. I can get to 1.8 on most overclocking kernels, just wondered if anyone got higher. I personally use net's kernel, silverneedle, and I must say it's rather nice.
And no, this isn't supposed to be an overclocking vs. not overclocking type of thread (sorry trolls :]). People are going to overclock because it's fun.

[MOD]Updated-8-30-PowerSave CPU Manager-W/Dual Core Support

Well with all the dual core stuff going on i figured it would be good to make this flashable so it can be used with anything. So here it is, All the credit goes to mike1986 for this technology found in his sensation rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849 and -viperboy-
On to the good stuff, what this mod does.
It controls your cpu's for a good balance between power and performance by changing the following:
Enables the second cpu while phone is awake
Sets cpu frequency and governor for second cpu
Sets cpu frequency and governor for first cpu
While the phone is sleeping it underclocks the first cpu to 384000 and sets the governor to conservative, also disables the second cpu.
When the battery gets below 25% it will disable the second cpu and underclock the first cpu to 702000 and set the governor to conservative.
With this you don't need to use any other cpu managers ie., virtuous_oc, setcpu, etc.
The file can be edited at /system/xbin/pcm and init.d needs to be enabled on your rom.
Post any ideas or problems you have.
EDIT: I fixed the invalid argument problem occuring in logcat. It was happening cause it kept writing to the file when it was already changed. Fixed it by adding a check.
Users experiencing lag please try the new upload (PCM-DualCore1.1-signed.zip) and see if it works better and post results. Thank You.
Changes:
If you use virtuous oc daemon, i added a file that will work with it. It simply enables the second cpu and underclocks it while its sleeping. It can be used with any other cpu manager because it doesn't effect the first cpu core at all.
Awesome, thanks so much!! This will come in REAL handy!!

Thanks for this. As with everything though, I like to have a clear path back... To be able to turn it off. Would I have to reflash the ROM I'm using to go back? Also, I assume this would work on 2.3.4 ROMs.

Just NAND backup before flashing
So, our phones should now have true dual-core integration/hw acceleration? Or am I mistaken?
Leo does this work with 2.3.4. My bad wrote this before the others was posted.

sorry for the noob question, but what do you mean it enables the second cpu? weren't we using both cpu's all this time? isn't that the point of dual processors?
on the other end of things...can the file be editing for more aggressive underclocking when the screen is off, and other steps in between?
Its a huge difference w dual mode! Way way faster at opening things.

It's not a synchronous core. Meaning it only calls on the second core when needed. This hack forces both cores to run all the time when the screen is on.
What are the benefits? Eh. Well have to see. I think HTC set it up the way it is because it's better on battery. I'm interested on a little more info as well though.
Most people from the synergy rom nighties say it has no real difference. Besides...1.2ghz is fast enough for just about every application short a few games even on a SINGLE core

I wasn't talking about working on this script. Misfit and I have been working on chanting the ramdisk and creating a similar script. But yes it will work on any firmware due to its hardware related more than firmware.
Also, its fast for sure. But it needs to settle in too.

So when the screen is on...does it run both cores at the same clock speed with same governor?
So I went ahead and flashed this. I'm running viper ROM and silverneedle 1.0. I use system panel, and it appears that even after flashing this that core 2 is only being called on when needed. Core 1 is still handling most of the load.
Here's the monkey wrench. The rom supports init.d and also has oc daemon built into it. However, if you use a different kernel than stock on viper it stops the daemon from automatically running on startup. Could this be the same case here?
well I looked at the code and it looks alright. similar to my SetCPU profiles.
I might modify it a little though. i'm on a 4000mAh battery so I don't need powersaver to kick in at 25%
will use it all day tomorrow and report at night.
Could someone please post before and after quadrant or smartbench scores?
Most apps are not multithreaded so they will only use one CPU anyway. Turning the second one on is going to do nothing but drain the battery and it won't result in any increase in speed.
Thanks,
Mike

Your not supposed to have the ocdameon, and this script running at the same time. If you are, that would be your problem, as they both will be contradicting eachother. You can only have one, or the other. It says this in the OP, to not have anything else controlling the CPU, but this script. You should prolly flash a different kernel without the dameon, then check it again with CPU master.

SetCPU, System Tuner etc. You need to have a custom kernel in order to change cpu speeds. If you're not sure whether you have a custom one or not, try installing one of those apps and if you're able to change cpu settings, you're on a custom kernel. congratulations

That depends on which governor you choose. I'm going to go ahead and guess you're on an Anthrax kernel. Each governor behaves differently, but only the performance governor locks your phone to the max speed you selected. I'd recommend intellianthrax or interactive, I personally use intellianthrax or lagfree. Lagfree is a really good one IF you don't overclock, but since you want to run at 1.5 ghz, I'd stay away from lagfree. If you use lagfree, your phone will rarely ever drop the clock speed down below 1 ghz when it doesn't need it.

Yes you are overclocked. 1.18 GHz is the stock CPU speed for our phones, so any number over 1.18 for the max frequency is overclocked

You are always using a governor, even if you don't have an app for it. The governor tells the phone how to use your CPU, basically. See where it says "ondemand" in that screenshot you posted? Well, ondemand is the governor you're using. If you click ondemand, there should be a drop down menu that opens up that gives you all the governor options available for the kernel you're using
thanks man

I like to use the virtuous overclock deamon, it is said to work better. But most roms have not implement it here.
tammyjustin, I assume you're using MeanROM since 486MHz-1512MHz / Ondemand governor are the default settings built into that ROM. I just started playing around with Anthrax kernels and MeanROM a few days ago.
A word of advice if you're going to be playing with overclocking... You need to be aware that you shouldn't use any overclocking tools like SetCPU with MeanROM unless you modify a system file first to disable the built-in clocking and voltage controls, or you can use only the built-in controls. I was getting strange instability with MeanROM before I realized what was going on with the internal clock management and SetCPU (which I have always used). Basically SetCPU and the internal clock controls in the ROM were both trying to manage the clockspeed and it was causing stability problems. Now I'm using only the internal settings and it is far more stable.
MeanRom ICS 2.4
Hey. I have been using meanRom for a while now, and the newest version (MeanROM ICS v2.4) is eating my battery too quickly. I was wondering if there was a way to disable dual cores all the time or reduce the processor speed to try and save some battery. I have never attempted to change max speed or change the number of cores being used before so i really don't know where to start.
I saw in inbREDed 5.2.5 they have a "Core control in quicksettings, change to dual/single core on the fly". Is that available to use in MeanROM?
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes that is correct. but I text a lot and don't need dual core while sending texts. I have to charge my phone twice a day right now. =\
I was hoping I could on the fly turn on / off dual cores or change the CPU speed.
With previous versions of MeanROM I only had to charge my phone at night. I have thought about down grading, but it's pretty stable right now, i just want better battery life. So that is why I wanted to change the CPU settings.

Mikey did say something about his next version (which will be based on the Sprint OTA when it finally arrives) will dial back performance a little to extend battery life. Maybe this is what he has in mind.
Here's my 2 cents.... Overclocking is great for speed but it cripples battery life. I used to be obsessed with OC and quadrants, but then I realized I can't tell a difference from 1.2 GHz to 1.8 GHz. OC can also make your phone unstable. Honestly you probably wouldn't need to over clock if you don't know much about it. So I wouldnt spend too much time worrying about it
Do what you want though cause that's just my opinion

help please

i would post in meanrom but im not permitted yet. i want to b able to overclock on meanrom. ive tried every method possible as mikey describes such as the zip file and using root explorer and saying yes at the prompt when backing out. the overclock has worked before on my evo but now its not. all the zip files in the meanrom ics folder work fine for rosie button remapping so forth. all but overclocking. i know quadrant is not the best but when the overclock works my score is always 5800 to 6300 at 1.782.also my current frequency and max frequency are 1.782. also cf bench and antutu are also much higher. if someone knows anything to help pleasa respond. thanks

If I recall correctly, after lots of testing when the phone came out, the people who had root concluded that something around 1.46 GHz was the fastest OC that was stable. The 1.5 GHz the same processor runs at in other phones wasn't supposedly even stable. I know we have a different kernel now, but there's no way, in my opinion, that 1.9 GHz would be stable anyway. Usually overclocking isn't done over 1/3 the base clock speed, much less almost 60% above the base clock speed. And how much performance would you really gain vs power lost due to the OC? I haven't run across an app yet which needs more than a couple seconds to load, and everything runs smoothly.
Not to say that I don't appreciate your efforts in making the overclock, because I appreciate everyone who's developing for this phone, but maybe you should start with a lower maximum overclock speed, then get feedback from multiple people on how it runs, then move up. Once you reach the upper limit of stability, limit the maximum overclock speed to that. I'm honestly surprised you could even get Antutu to finish its test without it crashing. With the people who test it, you're more than likely going to get an overwhelming majority who say that upper levels break the phone.
1.46 is good enough for me - really gives this device an edge, makes it feel snappier. how can i load this on boot automatically?

I'm unsure if overclocking this phone is even worth the abuse the phone will take from overclocking the only phone I ever overlocked was my old LG ally which was set at 600mhz stock so pushing it to 800mhz made since but as of now my CPU speed is fine stable and productive I feel like I would be overclocking for the sake of saying I overclocked my phone. Is anyone seeing any enhancements? I appreciate the work on this don't get me wrong just adding my two cents on overclocking.
