[Q] Backup of Telstra ROM - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just went out and got myself a Telstra GS2 - and its working Almost perfectly!!
After having an optus GS2, having to send it back, and all the hassle I had to go through, I would like to somehow create a complete backup, including all settings and kernel n that.
Any ideas how? This device is still unrooted, wanted to get an image before I tried to root....
Regards
Jamie

I think you have to root to be able to make backups of the entire rom..

I am in the same boat - I want to make sure I have a copy of my current stock ROM before I root it and change it. Can't seem to find an answer anywhere though.
DT

I think you would have to do it through ADB.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

Hmmm but if I root it to back it up, its not really a backup of the whole rom. Anyone know of how to pull a rom off with ADB or something?

Perhaps look in the Xoom thread. I remember people doing this for the Xoom.

Posted this in the cf-root thread a few days ago and got no response. Anyone here know the answer?
Just upgraded my Nexus 1 running Cyanogen 7 to the I9100T running on the Telstra Next G 850MHz
I want to root but im a little confused. I mainly want this to install Samba Filesharing /market.android.com/details?id=com.funkyfresh.samba&feature=search_res ult"
Im still happy with stock firmware at moment and will experiment with this when i get bored of the stock.
Is it safe for me to flash CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KF4-v4.0-CWM4.zip to gain root
To get rid of the triangle can i use the Vodafone Australia

Either wait for intra to upload the official carrier firmware when it hits the update server in this thread. Or go for the root / unroot method as described here

I am wanting to completely root my phone and install a clean slate of Gingerbread on it.
I've tried Z4Root, (I was able to root my phone with it back in 2.1), and have also tried Super One Click.
Nothing works now that I have Gingerbread and I can't find anything TO work.
I am praying to the xda gods for their wisdom and knowledge to help me with this problem! I have been at this since 9AM, it is 2PM. What can I do??
i dont use sgs, but i do know cfroot kernel or any other kernel based on cfroot can help u out.

Same Problem
If anyone comes up wit a good link or video that will be very helpful
I have this same phone and took a look at the links in the second post. However the kernel numbers don't seem to be following the same format as the links in the thread.
Has anyone had any luck rooting this kernel on the c spire galaxy s showcase?
I tried Odin3 and it messed up my phone and I had to go get a new one.
I'm also looking for help on this as well.
SuperOneClick
I'm having the same issues. I have tried SuperOneClick and it stops on step 6.
I'm having the same problem too after updating to 2.3.5. Super one click freezes on step 6.
Same issue with my CSpire SGS running 2.3.5. I do think that speed and battery life are improved over 2.2, but I miss my root.

Did you guys do the official update with Kies? Send me a PM for a way to get a rooted ROM on your Showcase.
I did so the official update from C Spire. I'm not interested in a custom rom I just want to root my phone so I can use wifi tether with my galaxy tab again.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've ran several custom roms on my phone, but would like the option to just run stock with root so I can remove all of the bloatware from CSpire.
I've also had various issues with some other roms, ranging from no auto-rotate to glitchy in-call audio.

OTA ICS with root?

Very sorry if this is a stupid question.
My Dad has a SGS2. I rooted it for him, and installed SpeedMod Kernel for him (way back in October)
He is currently running 2.3.4.
The ICS OTA / Kies or whatever, is coming soon.
Will he still be able to upgrade his phone whilst rooted?
Will the update perform successfully?
Will he lose data?
I'm asking because on other devices (HTC), if you perform a official update when you are rooted, it results in a bricked phone!
Thanks!

Not sure myself to be honest but the best thing to do is wait till you read from here that the official roms have been released through KIES. Then unroot your dad's phone and then feel free to upgrade then once you are unrooted and back to official stock firmware.
If you're still running stock firmware, you should still be able to get Kies upgrades. Obviously if you upgrade via Kies your phone will be unrooted as a stock kernel will overwrite your existing kernel.
If you find you are unable to get Kies updates, you will have to flash stock firmware back on to the phone as suggested by my learned colleague, Mr Suarez, before you can upgrade via Kies.
Any upgrade via Kies shouldn't result in loss of data unless you get a message before you begin the process that says you will lose data. Tho obviously backing up anything/everything important before upgrading is obviously recommended.
I see you're looking for ironclad guarantees about a couple of things, and frankly, when you start running non-stock firmware on your phone you should expect these to go out the window, i.e there aren't any (and even when you are running stock nothing is absolutely guaranteed).
Better not to tempt fate IMHO.
Many thanks for the replies fellas!
I appreciate it
Thanks for tips!
Yeah, I guess I'll do a NANDroid backup too...
TBH, I don't think my Dad is too bothered about being rooted on ICS, so it doesn't matter if he loses root.
On Gingerbread now, he doesn't use many root apps, apart from SetCPU and adfree.
But thanks for the helpful advice guys!

OK, sorry for the bump.
My Dad is still running the same setup 2.3.4 & SpeedMod kernel. The kies isn't detecting the phone...
But today he got the OTA notification to update ICS directly on his phone.
Is it safe to do it? So the update will override the SpeedMod kernel, but the phone will still boot and work fine? Not bothered about losing root - just want to know the upgrade will be successful.
Anyone can clarify please? I've done a NAND back up to be safe. the worse for worse - do i just restore the backup?
P.S - I have CWM on it - will that effect it?
Can't say, but should be ok, worst case you cab flash back using Odin if something happens.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Didn't work for me.
I had flashed the leaked release of ICS onto my phone and so when the official release came out I went straight to the OTA update (I'm on O2 in the UK) And the there was no available update (However my Dad also has the S2 and it wasn't there for him either).
So I tried the kies software to only find it gave me a message saying my phone wasn't supported/update not available for phone. It did however allow my dads stock firmware to be.
Hope that helps and you might have better luck but it will remove any root you have because I'm pretty sure it also updates the Kernel.
Thanks a lot guys! I used ODIN to flash the latest ICS version - all good now! He is unrooted, but still had CWM, so can he still receive future OTA's and make NANDroids?
You need root in order for CWM to work and for you to make a backup. Here is my guide to rooting your phone again. Very simple: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625184

Yes, when you update your phone you would have lost root and CWM. Just use the guide I posted above to regain root and CWM so your dad that can make his NANDroid backups.

[Stock ROM] (H3G) Three UK 2.3.6 for ODIN

Thanks to 'cascader' I have used a program to extract the Stock ROM for our Three UK Galaxy Aces. Thanks again 'cascader'!
The zip file contains:
Cooper_v1.0.ops - Partition table etc. for the Ace ONLY
SS5570_Odin_Multi_Downloader_v4.38.exe - Odin 4.38 - To flash the firmware
S5830XWKT5_S5830H3GKT3_S5830NEKT2_HOME.tar.md5 - The firmware
SS_DL.dll - This file is used ONLY by Kies so is un-needed
This is a ONEPACKAGE file meaning you only need the cooper.ops file and the firmware to flash. If you do not know what you are doing - http://lmgtfy.com/?q=galaxy+ace+odin+onepackage+flash or http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-flash-official-stock-firmwares.html
Download link:
http://www.4shared.com/zip/TENhIZUN/GT-S5830_H3G_1_20111223114803.html?
I accept no responsibility for bricked phones. Thanks!
Jamie.
will i need to convert filesystem back from ext 4 or will flashing do this?
my phone was on O2 but after failed attempts at finding the firmware for it, i just stuck an unbranded stock from asia on there...works wonders
It has to be flashed by ODIN @PJ147 Use the included files for ODIN and the instructions from either link
@King Kaze - I was using UK XEU but it was only 2.3.3, This is 2.3.6 and includes Three's network tweaks which makes my 2G roaming a bit better, but completely useless still. I have to wait 2 minutes for 0.facebook.com to load on Opera! If I use Opera on any other phone on 2G m.facebook.com loads quickly. I'm thinking it's Three restricting how fast things can download/tx-rx on 2G, Their websites load alright in seconds... I asked them about this and they denied that they restrict speeds on 2G which makes me laugh.
0.facebook should load faster than all the other facebook sites because it barely has anything
Yeah, It should but Three restrict my 2G speed so it loads really slowly :L

Rooting GS3 UK T-Mobile...

Hi All,
Please forgive me, I had an iPhone for the last 5 years and it was jailbroken each firmware update.
I just made the android jump (love it!) and i've come to root... and i'm stumped!
I got Odin... But then knowing which firmware/kernal/thingy to use is confusing me badly.

The T-Mobile, UK Version has looked bootloader from what I have been told.
there are plenty of rooting video guides in the general section (to many to link just search) . Or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238 is probably the easiest way to root with the best guide.
If you are still stuck after looking through those just message back here and I will try to help the best I can.

Heard a few of my friends complaining that it did, but then again they probably where doing it wrong and had a USB connected or the phone turned on or something lol.
In the end I rooted it using the first method replied in this post, worked like a charm. Doesn't seem to have any kind of branded or locked bootloader from what I can tell, and root apps are working as they should.
A further question.. on my old iPhone, if I jailbroke it and update the firmware, it reversed the jailbreak.
I want to update the firmware on my GS3 to the latest, will it undo the root? Will I have to re-install root apps etc?
Or will the device stay rooted once i've upgrade?
Many thanks for your help, you guys/gals are a friendly bunch of clever-cloggs.
Here is a link to cwm flashable stock Roms, lg8 is what you want, you can flash these in recovery. I advise after flashing that you upgrade your modem to lh1 which is latest for uk and fixed some issues. Link also supplied

All matters regarding root etc, how to reset flash counter and return to stock for warranty can be found in i9300/General/stickies
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but whats the significance of this ROM?
Here's my device so far...
Stock ROM (never flashed anything custom) which I rooted using the above method.
I want to update to the latest firmware for the i9300, still stock though as I haven't found a feature in a custom ROM worth messing with it for me.
Then I was just going to re-root (if I needed to).
Does the ROM you posted mean that I won't have to re-root? And it will stay rooted?
And the modem thing... I don't understand.
I'm sorry to be a pain!
Thank you for your help,
the Rom listed are flashable through recovery, and there are a choice of odexed and deodexed stock Roms. Odex is the standard Rom, and Odex basically helps load apps a bit quicker, but has some drawbacks also. I could spend hours trying to fill you in but reading all the links and information I have supplied you with is the easier option
Unless you want to return the favor and spend the next few days explaining the mysteries of Windows to me, then I may consider some mutual spoon feeding
So.. to answer my question, does flashing through recov mean you do not have to re-root the device?
I wonder why the modem update is seperate? You would think they would include such things in the firmware update.
I'm a wizz on windows - fire away! haha.
I do genuinely appreciate your advice and help.
So.. to answer my question, does flashing through recov mean you do not have to re-root the device?
Yes if its not rooted .
Modems are part of firmware but can also be flashed as a separate item .
jje
JJE - My device is rooted though, which I explained
Also, the recov flashable firmware posted above lists this..
"Firmware info:
•Base Firmware: I9300XXBLG9 (4.0.4)
•Region Asia
•Country: Singapore
•Carrier: Unbranded
•Build Date: 30 July 2012
•Modem: DXLG2
•CSC: OLBBLG2
•Change List: 928452"
BLG8 has a version for Europe/UK.. but not BLG9...
Will I have to install the older one?
flash lg8 as I said, ...... lg9 is the Asian version. The modem was a separate ota update to remedy some problems.
I'm on uk Orange/t mobile so all is good
At op to your original Q... all you have to do is stay on your firmware unless you cant wait for the update to be released in the uk, then you can download the latest firmware either from xda or sammobile.com and flash with odin. Now if you stay on your firmware sometimes it will not update properly through kies because of root. In that case go on sammobile and download the firmware for your phone and flash with odin. You will lose root but you already have cf root on your computer so just root again.

[Q] Bought an used phone and don´t know what root.

Hi guys I am kind of new to this forum and really like all the website with so much information !
I am turning to you because because my friend wanted to buy an SGS 2 and bought one from some random guy whom he has no contact with.
The problem is now that the phone seems to be rooted because there is an yellow triangle that follows in the start up. I wonder if anyone knows how to see what kind of room is installed on the phone? I ask this because because the phone has been unlocked with the simunlock app but
the network connection is so bad, I´ve managed to make 1-2 calls to see that the phone works but i get max 1/5 bars in the connection barometer.
This made me think that maybe the root is bad performed by the guy that did flash the device from the begining.
If you guys have any kind of tweaks or ideas what to do I would really appreciate it.
I gathered some information that might help. This is taken from t he status menu in the galaxy S2.
Would it maybe help to restore everything to stock?

Root has no impact on signal strength.
But if you want to revert to stock, just download original firmware from http://sammobile.com/firmware, unpack and flash via Odin in PDA.

The ROM you use has no effect on your signal strength. The modem however, does. So you can try flashing a new modem if you're fine with the ROM besides the signal problems. ie.the UI, features offered, etc. Else you can flash your stock firmware for your region and that would solve your problem

And if someone could point me in the right direction about wich modem I should use for my region, I live in sweden and use a swedish sim card and operator.

No.
For Sweden I think it will be I9100XXLQ6.
If you got the phone from a totally unknown person, i would suggest to revert it back to complete stock, and then start making all the changes you want from scratch, just to be 100% safe.
I agree i´ll flash everything back to stock and start from the begining, I think it´s the best way. But 19100XXLQ6 is the modem that my phone says I have, does that mean that I´am on stock baseband?`Otherwise if someone could show me a link or something for a step to step guide of how to restore everything back to stock.
Thanks a lot for your help guys !
Look backup your efs folder before you start pissi g about with stuff.
Then go to that link and get a 4.0.3 stock firmware for your region.
Then come back here and you can be advised about like siyah kernel/nand backups/roms.
