[Q] Flash back to stock 4.5.91 - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

can i flash back to stock 4.5.91 to to unroot the phone. do i just put the .zip on my sd card and flash using clockworkmod

also curious

Same question.
I was previously on GB that was pushed to me OTA. I got bored and rooted, unlocked, and flashed Ken's Alien not thinking about the consequences of not being able to revert to stock thanks to previous root methods like Gingerblur and SBF that made it so easy. I want to get my work email back on my phone, but cannot if I am rooted.
Will flashing a 1.8.3 Fruitcake and then OTA to GB brick me? I've looked everywhere and am still noobiously confused.
Anyone know how to unroot w/unlocked bootloader? Is it possible?

"GB that was pushed to me OTA" so you are indeed has the new bootloader so you only way to downgrade will be moto-flash or CWM to 1.83
But why you dont try to download MOTO official SBF 2.3.4/4.5.91 and RSD this the only OFFICIAL MOTO SBF you can RSD with GB new bootloader
the following procedure will bring you device to out-of-the-box state with GB 2.3.4/4.5.91
First have a backup because you phone will be complete clean after this so remove external sd card
1. First format internal sdcard by settings->storage->internal sdcard->format
2. Turn off the phone and press VOL DOWN while your turn ON your phone
3. Wait until "fastboot" tag show up release VOL DOWN and now PRESS VOL UP once to enter to fastboot
4. Now you in fastboot mode "Starting fastboot......."
5. Now go to command windows box (CMD)
(You need moto-fastboot to perform this and you need to be in the same folder where is located moto-fastboot)
moto-fastboot erase boot
moto-fastboot erase system
moto-fastboot erase webtop
moto-fastboot erase recovery
moto-fastboot erase userdata
moto-fastboot erase cache
moto-fastboot erase preinstall
just to make sure everythings is wipe
moto-fastboot -w
after this
moto-fastboot reboot (at the same time press VOL UP and hold until show up "Starting RSD......"
Now start RSD and select the official moto GB 2.3.4/4.5.91 SBF (you can find a copy in dev forum, stickie under the thread of all the SBF's, make sure you chose 2.3.4/4.5.91)
Press start and what until reboot and RSD show up PASS in the status...
This the manual way to do it... and you are 100% you wipe everything...
The other one is doing MSU (motorola software update) and run all the process (in the background what it do is RSD the service SBF of GB 2.3.4/4.5.91) after it finish you can go back an do a factory default restore, inside settings in Android OS

Thanks. I thought about using moto software update, but wasn't sure if it would work. Same with RSD. I just don't wanna brick, but since I won't be RSD downgrading I probably shouldn't be all that worried.

Does this go for stock locked bootloaders as well. You mentioned you were unlocked. All that I have done on my atrix is root currently. Not to crazy to unlock yet. I'm on the OTA 4.5.91. Have alot of random reboot issues lately and considering this process!
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info. I used your fastboot wipe and RSD'd suggeations to SBF. Now my phone appears to be stock. It no longer says unlocked at boot and is not rooted. Exactly what I was looking for.
My first try of using the 183 fruitcake and then OTA update didn't work due to CWM still being there. It may have worked if I had first flashed the stock recovery. I didn't try that.
Thanks again for your assistance!

If you previously installed the OTA update, it should be fine to flash this if locked as well. Its just installing the same software but without root.
The problems after the OTA update happen if you flash a SBF older than gingerbread.
It was the unlocked part of my situation that had me concerned. I haven't messed with bootloaders until this week and was confused and nervous about how that would come into play. If I hadn't unlocked, I wouldn't have hesitated as much to flash the official GB SBF to unroot.

[Q] What should I do, locked bootloader not rooted w/4.5.91 installed

I reviewed all the threads but can't resolve the information I need to plan next step!
I want to revert back to stock since I am experiencing battery drain (I believe).
I did not root or unlock before using the OTG (thumbdrive) method for insrtalling the OTA 4.5.91 zip.
After finding out that was ill advised I did not unlock and left unrooted. I have been out of town and can't backtrack throught the threads to determine what is the best course.
Is there a concise thread for my situation?
Thanks in advance
If you want to confirm your status, please adb, su, and "cat /sys/firmware/fuse/ReservedOdm" or just open the file in Root Explorer. If you see something like:
10000000000010001000300004000
Then you should NOT SBF anything from Motorola"
If you want to post your ReservedOdm to look and see if you will be fine to SBF 1.83 again
Probably you are safe if you actually installed Kenth by CDW or moto-fastboot (boot.img and system.img)
But if you actually run the update.zip or any update trought the normal android recovery screen and if you saw the following legend "updating AP20 bootloader" in that case you CAN NOT flash any SBF from Motorola

4= BL "unlock" did you ever unlock you BL with pudding?
0= BL lock

1=NO UPDATE BL TO AP20 Ver. , so you applied GB by moto-fastboot process or by CDW
3=YOU HAVE A NEW BL AP20 Ver., so you indeed applied GB OTA by Android Recovery from the sdcard
so in other words the ones we are in "confirmed" brick land if we RSD any MOTOROLA SBF are the ones with "3"
So you seem you indeed apply unlock bootloader (please confirm?) but you never applied GB OTA by Android Recover update.zip, and as you already confirm you applied GB Kenneth version by CDW or moto-fastboot.

Status
1. Locked and rooted phone
2. I ran 1.2.6 sbf with RSD to return to a stock build
3. I unrooted phone
4. I ran OTA 1.8.3
5. I ran the Motorola Build 4.5.91 "not KP's" with Motorola cable from update.zip through USB flash drive
6. "Stopped Here" this is my current state
Unfortunately I did not use KP's version, and I don't know how to check for blown fuses since I haven't rooted and did not flash pudding "stopped after flashing OTA for fear of bricking" . I believe I have read that some have installed pudding from my current state to with a recoverable softbrick and then used fast booted flashing img of 1.8.3.
can anybody verify doing this safely? Sorry if this thread is repetitive but there is much confusion in here and I was gone two days from the forum when this all was taking place.
Much appreciated.
JiminSD I recommend you to root first by preinstall method first so you can check first the "fuses" to make sure how to proceed. To do the root you DO NOT need to be "unlock". If you need help just tell and I can guide you for the root process

Yes, I unlocked with pudding following the instructions here ---> http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader, and yes I did flash KP's 4.5.91 and not the OTA.
Thanks for the clarification. Much appreciated!
So you are in the group of the lucky ones that actually can RSD "full" 1.83 or 1.57
The only thing you will lost the tag "unlocked" at the startup, so to get it back just RSD pudding again
I think you are asking this to return you phone to "stock" to be able to received the official OTA from moto/att right?

I am thinking about it, but I may let some other brave souls try first, as I believe it will cause the issues the current leaked OTA has caused. My phone runs great at the moment on KP's 4.5.91.
Prior to this, I flashed back a couple of times on 4.1.83 and did what you said to get "unlocked" back on my boot screen. I think everyone is more or less worried about what the actual release version of GB might do if you are unlocked already.
I am in same situation as OP. From private discussions and reading different threads it seems that I can go from stock 2.3.4 OTA (no mods) with a locked bootloader to anything if I just use the small unlock/pudding followed by fastboot unlock commands and fastboot install cwm....then fruitcakes or any rom should be good to go. But im waiting for GB to go fully public....just gonna enjoy 2.3.4 for now until everything is all sorted out.

Agree. I think the first things to do when the real OTA is out is actually compare with the leak one, so at least we have an idea how to proceed.
Good Luck!

Sorry but this is NOT TRUE:
"I can go from stock 2.3.4 OTA (no mods) with a locked bootloader to anything "
Anything in this case mean: NEED TO UNLOCK BL, NEED TO APPLIED ANY ROM BY CWM OR MOTO-FASTBOOT WAY
But here it is the CONs: UNTIL TODAY IF YOU APPLIED THE LEAK STOCK GB YOU CAN NOT RSD ANY MOTOROLA SBF, THAT MEAN INCLUDED GB SBF BECAUSE IS NOT OUT THERE YET, SO YOU NEVER WILL GET BACT TO "REAL" STOCK OR BE SURE 100% YOU CAN RECEIVED IN THE FUTURE ANY OTA DIRECTLY FROM MOTO/ATT IS NOT BEEN TESTED YET

4.5.91 Update

Hello Atrix users! I recently just received this phone about a week ago and have rooted, unlocked the bootloader and also flashed the cwm. Now, whenever I try to update via OTA or sd card I get an error stating that the update has failed. I'm very new to Android phones and I was wondering what the procedure for updating would be? BTW I'm on 1.8.3
Thanks a lot
first of all i dont think your suppose to rsd or ota after you have unlocked the BL you have to flash GB through moto-fastboot or fastboot when u have GB on your external SD and run the commands through a command window, GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND and so is XDA just a do a search and you should find wat your looking for,
wat i have done is i was already on 1.8.3 and unlocked the BL, but i forgot to root the phone, and i couldnt root idk why, so i had to use the aroot method(do quick search on it) which had me rsd back to 1.2.6 then reboot, after that the words UNLOCKED where gone, so i think rsd back to 1.2.6 either took the unlock away or just got rid of the words and BL was still unlocked idk, but any way did a wi-fi ota update to 1.5.7 than ran afterupdate.bat and it retained the root, then just ran the unlock again with rsd rebooted and the words unlocked were back, but im not on 1.8.3, idk if i should try to ota to it, or rsd back to the beginning which is 1.2.6 and just ota all the way to the offical newest update of gingerbread then unlock the bl again and do the preinstall root method, thats where im stuck at,
That seems like a ton of work just for the OTA. I unlocked my boot loader and flash the cherry blur rom (v.1.4) this was the easiest way I have found to get 2.3.3 on my phone and without blur over taking the interface.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
from wat i have read you should be good with wat ever u do with rsd or flashing back to a stock rom AS LONG AS YOU HAVENT UPDATED TO THE NEWEST OTA UPDATE SENT TO YOU OTA BUT IF YOU HAVE ACCEPTED THE OTA UPDATE YOU WILL HARD BRICK YOUR PHONE IF U TRY FLASHING BACK TO A STOCK LIKE 1.2.6 i think that is how it goes from wat i have read

[Q] Question about unlock

Alright, I unlocked my ATT Atrix while it was on the stock 1.8.3 sbf. I installed tenfars CWM next. Then I installed kenns Ginger Blur ROM. After that I flashed back to stock 1.8.3 with the SBF file located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944
I used this one:
Branding: AT&T US
Version: 1.8.3 Full
Android Version: 2.2.2
Bootloader Version: N/A
Webtop version: 4.257.30
Requires RSD Lite 5.0.0
Requires Moto Android (De)packer 1.3 to edit.
My phone no longer said unlocked at boot. I then went on to do the OTA update to 4.5.91 so that I would have gingerbread.
My question is, am I still unlocked? When I try to boot into android recovery, I get a caution symbol with an android standing next to it. I am no longer rooted either. I have read that you need to use CWM in order to root the Atrix on Gingerbread, but I can't use CWM. So will I have to wait?
I managed to get it rooted via the preinstall.img trick. When I installed ROM manager and flashed CWM it said it flashed successfully. Upon trying to boot into recovery I now get the message "Failed to boot 2." Do I have to unlock it again? I didn't try that first out of fear for bricking. Any help is appreciated

You're semi unlocked. Usually you just have to reflash pudding again (but don't need to do the oem unlock). So that would be the first thing I would do.
Next, flash tenfars unlocked CWM (make sure to delete the file that it tells you... installrecovery.sh or something). I would use that rather than the rom manager cwm at this time.

Yea, although (i haven't kept up), but the original pudding thread has updated the "pudding" file to resolve some memory timing issues so might want to download that.

[Q] Need help in transforming my Atrix to a lean mean machine!

Hello. The subject matter says it all.
I currently have a rooted and unlocked AT&T Atrix on 1.26 version (yeah...still in ice age ) with a locked bootloader. Im with a non-US telco carrier. It came unlocked and rooted so that was great. No hassle but now I have started doing research on custom roms and webtop mods. I am trying to get around the info overload, so pls bear with my questions.
The overall goal is to have a stock/custom rom devoid of all the bloatwares and can run webtop2sd, and if that is not possible then, webtop. Very simple needs.
Option 1
======
To remain on stock rom and update to 1.83 version, and then to install the webtop2sd mod. Ideally I would like to boot off Debian from the microsd card. There was a post in which a forumer mentioned that he was able to "frankenstein" the webtop2sd and webtop mods. Thats great if I understood correctly.
Option 2
======
To update to 4.5.91 (probably a custom rom like Aura) and then install the webtop2sd/webtop mod.
What should be done?
I am going to update 1.26 -> 1.57 -> 1.83 -> 4.5.91 via system update. (which means I now have to signed with moto account...yes I have not as I read that there were some privacy issues.)
Through the update process, I would lose root. To keep everything clean, I am going to go through factory reset and then perform the update.
Once I am in 1.83 or 4.5.91, I will apply the root and unlock the bootloader. Which is the best way to go about this? Should I just follow the instruction here or this way. Or is there any other better way?
This is all I have for now until I install the webtop mod or the custom rom...
update your phone to wherever you want it at, then use this script to unlock the bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
after that, you can easily root your phone using the preinstall method found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204 (second post)
if you update to 4.5.91 though, as you attempt to unlock the bootloader you will get a semi-hard brick, just have it boot up into fastboot mode and continue using the script. easy as pie!
I never got a semi-hard or *soft* brick from unlocking but that's just cause I must love to eat pudding =D . Do all the OTA updates, unlock / root, and then install the 2.3.4 fruitcake and install webtop. Best option by far, IMO, as far as the ease of transition goes. Should be cake. That's what I did and as long as you don't RSD lite with an .SBF back once on 2.3.4 OTA yer good to go.
eat yer fruitcake once updated to 2.3.4 OTA *stock gingerbread*-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009
Install a custom kernel if ya wanna overclock or undervolt, I would personally suggest Faux123's. -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156040
aaand freeeze all that bloatware!-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972459
I read that its easier to update via SBF than OTA? What have your experiences been so far?

well, i can't find it anymore but there is an SBF in the development forum that will allow you to update to 2.3.4 android without getting the brickable bootloader, but i personally don't see a point in using SBF. it's not meant for the end user, and using it can be risky.
SBF flashing is faster i believe, but as i said can also potentially harm your device if you're unsure of what you're doing.
SamCripp, one of the most esteemed devs here, suggests for the average person to completely stay away from sbf flashing after you've unlocked your bootloader unless you absolutely have to use it for something.
remember though, if you use the OTA update you CANNOT downgrade your device through SBF flashing, you HAVE to use the fruitcakes method. it WILL brick your device to downgrade, but only with the OTA update.
EDIT: and it's a semi-hard brick, it doesn't hurt your device in the least. you might panic at first, but it's as simple as booting into fastboot mode and finishing the script. or if you're more tech inclined, you can just do the fastboot oem unlock command through fastboot.

Fruitcakes??? All this jargon.... Hmmm...gotta check this out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009
yep, Fruitcakes. it's a CWM alternative to sbf flashing, much safer since it doesn't edit the bootloader at all, so there's no risk in hard bricking your device.
after you unlock your bootloader, you should install Romracer's CWM recovery here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
do all of your flashing through CWM after you unlock your bootloader, just remember to clear cache/dalvik/data between each ROM or you might get stuck in a bootloop.
Ok...CWM sounds more familiar....
If I understand correctly, I actually dont have to go via OTA. As long as I have the img file for flashing to each version, I could just use the CWM and not via OTA, right?

well, you have to have an unlocked bootloader to get CWM. and to unlock your bootloader, you have to update to 1.8.3 or later.
after you unlock your bootloader, you can install CWM and proceed to just use CWM for your flashing needs.
i repeat again though, after you unlock your bootloader you should stay away from SBF flashing altogether. it's the quickest way to brick your device.

Once you unlock and get CWM installed its just a case of wiping the device and flashing zip files.
Yep after unlocking and getting rom racers cwm in, you get to have lots of fun and almost zero chance of hard bricking. Make sure you understand the pudding part. After you unlock throw rsd lite away.
After updating to 1.83 and unlocked, can I immediately installing a GB custom rom like Aura or Alien? Or do I need to update to 4.5.91 stock before I can install a custom rom? Which I assume is pre-rooted, which mean I dont have to root it..

You should be able to start flashing if you used pudding. No need to upgrade to .91 stock. I didn't. I think most roms are pre rooted now. Not that the rooting method was hard for the atrix.
I voided my warranty.

Yep thats how it works. once BL unlocked and CWM installed you can flash anything, including yes .91 stock.
Note that .91 stock OTA is not only the operating system but also modifies the bootloader hence all the hard brick warnings about flashing sbfs. When you flash zip files you don't touch the bootloader, so there is no chance of hard bricking. i.e. if you flash .91 stock from zip file from CWM as opposed to OTA, you get only the OS, not the bootloader update (which doesn't matter ).

Could we get a sticky/consensus on unlocking 2.3.6 (4.5.141)?

It's looking like, at least for some users, unlocking the bootloader on OTA 4.5.141 is causing more issues than the expected soft brick that happens with 4.5.91. When new users are asking about unlocking the latest version, I see the standard advice offered:
- flash pudding sbf (just the unlocker)
- probably get soft-bricked
- issue "fastboot oem unlock" command anyway, reboot & life is great
OR use the one-click BL unlock script.
-----------------
But Nottach said he nearly hard-bricked after flashing pudding while unlocking a stock phone on 4.5.141. He had to do a vol up + power combo WHILE inserting the battery in order to bring it back...
and this user apparently had to do at least a battery pull to complete the process (not sure since posts were edited)...
and still other users are reporting success with the one-click tool.
-----------------
So: is it a fair statement that BL unlocking on the latest version runs an increased risk of bricking the phone, compared with 4.5.91? Is there something else I'm missing here? If I had a stock phone on the latest update I'd be thinking twice about unlocking it.

Anybody?
Had to replace my Atrix today, new one already has 4.5.141 on it. Is it safe to unlock the BL using pudding? Or should I wait till the Dev's get it fully worked out?
I'll post my experience/method that I did several times over on my 2 Atrix phones (Both AT&T)
Both phones had unlocked bootloader
I upgraded both phones via the Automatic Update (Motorola Website tool...it downloads the SBF and flashes it to your phone)
At that point you're at 141, stock, unrooted (I did this over unlocked bootloader)
Then I used the Automatic Bootloader Unlock 4.2 to do fastboot oem unlock
I root using preinstall method and restore from Titanium Backup
I have not run into any problems going to and from 141 with unlocked bootloader (I did not try going to FroYo but GB works fine)
I release two ATRIX with GB 2.3.6 Version 4.5.141 very easy
Use RSD Lite 5.7
but the pudding in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
First go to applications and places the phone in debug mode, then turn it off, and plug it in RSD mode and flash with RSD Lite SBF
If for some reason fails you failed to boot OS 0x1000 not detected, goin to RSD mode in 5 seconds
Then use this software
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
And utliza the Options for Failed To Apply FIX 0x1000 Boot ", the cel should be in fastboot mode
Write down the key will throw you via commands and then put it again when prompted, after this and you will the unlocked bootloader.
regards

When you did this, did you not get soft-bricked? I know I did.

I've done the preinstall, but I can't get CWM to flash the recovery partition.
Can anybody help with reinstalling CWM? Should I flash a pudding / SBF again though I know (based on the contents of ReservedOdm that my BL is still unlocked)?
just wanted to post my experience as i did this a couple of days ago...
i flashed the pudding file (not the one that the automatic unlocker script uses when choosing the 2.3.4/4.5.91 option), got the failed to boot error, put the phone into fastboot mode and did the oem unlock commands (on a PC running winXP), and my bootloader was successfully unlocked. at this point i was able to boot into the stock ROM, with the data partition freshly wiped. i then flashed romracer's cwm using fastboot mode, and then installed the nottachtrix rom. btw i noticed that on the stock rom, cwm would not stay loaded. seems like it gets wiped out after reboot? not sure.
i had previously created a tarball of my data partition and restored it after installing the new rom, but this was a bad idea. better to just use the batch functions of TiBu for the apps, and some sort of sms backup app (from the play store) for keeping your messages.
Just the topic I was looking for. I was trying to unlock my bootloader for this version, but haven't been able to find a guide showing me how and this is my first time.
