You can use the /preinstall method which is safe or if you want to unlock the BL also check out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871 everything you want to do to the phone is there.

You don't need gingerbreak in order to have rooted Gingerbread. You have to SBF to Froyo and use p3droid's prerooted update. After that, you'll have rooted gingerbread.

I don't know anyone who has had the OTA update, Just use PC Companion.
If your phone isn't unlocked you will most likely not have the update yet so u will have to wait or flash it.

Use the all in one tool to root. The method you're using is old.

I don't have a clue but my guess would be that your bootloader is to new for that tool to work. You'll need to use the revolutionary tool to root your device.

I used this method to root. Do you have HTC Sync or itunes downloaded on your computer? If so, they need to be deleted.
I also recommend using the new root tool by trter10.

what firmware version do you have VRALJB or VRALL4? If JB use the exynos exploit found in section 1 of my guide. If L4 flash root66 via odin found in section 1 of my guide. this will revert you back to JB but there is not much difference between the 2 other than bootloaders. You can then proceed to adams thread for unlocking bootloader.
I have l4 do you have a link?
