Phone ramdomly wakes up - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

About 2-3 times a hour, the screen will turn itself on and display the lockscreen, then go back to sleep if i don't touch it.. I always think i'm receiving a text message or something and it's getting annoying.
I'm on VR 2.3, but I also had this problem on Lite'ning, so i don't think it's rom dependent. Could any of these apps be the issue? I've frozen a bunch of them tho and it didn't help.

I had similar problem.. maybe something related to USB connector.
My phone randomly wakeup showing a steering wheel in notification area (using stock rom).. also, when that happen during a call, it switch to handsfree mode. That's was very annoying!
I've sent it back for assistence.

You must have something running on the background, could be GMaps/Latitude, Push/Pull exchange etc etc..to know what it is, download and install Better Battery Stats and look under the 'Wakelocks' option. You will see what is causing the Awakes and take further steps.
And ATK is not advised for Android. (I was against it but now I too agree it )
Regards.

Are you sure it's called Better Battery Stats? I can't see it on the market
edit* never mind, found it on xda.
Under wakelocks there's a huge list of stuff. Can any of these be the culprit?

Just check the first three or four, no need to check those which has some seconds duration, only check which has some minutes, like 10,15 mins duration.

my phone gets new problem each day and any further i go it get worse.
first i couldn’t connect to Vpn sometimes. i thought it may be personal problem.
then it got reset randomly with no reason. i didn't notice.
then it didn't recognized by computer and randomly didn't get charged.
today when it goes to standby mode it light up after few seconds and if i try to put it back in sleep mode by pushing power bottom it gets freeze and hang up.
Even when I turn the phone off sometimes it turns on by itself and after booting goes to car mode

I'm having exactly the same issue... but I'm experiencing also USB issues: sometimes the phone "believes" is USB connected without any physical cable connected... very weird... I'm still searching in the forum if can be fixed by software, before to send it to a service

Similar to me (see previous post) but I didn't experience any randomly restart, however the phone randomly is believing that USB cable is connected

The only culprit I cant really think off is your Advanced task killer, its doing more harm than good. Uninstall it and observe.

There a read up about task killers and what they actually do
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

I see, I have uninstalled it and monitored my wakelocks with better battery stats.
Can't really find anything. Facebook, Spotify, Dialer, Tapatalk, Widgetlocker etc. Tried freezing them all except dialer problem still occurs (but not so often?)

My A101it, just shut it self... after that I cannot open the device... please help...
Try holding the power button down for like 10-15 seconds, then press it again and see if it starts. When I first got the device that happened to me a few times. Hasn't happened since the 2.0.71 update, but that was the fix. The 10-15 second power button hold basically does a "cold boot" like on a PC that is locked up.

If I put some light like a flash light on the screen I can see a some of the deskstop... so its like the device has no light inside..
Even in the Archos startuplogo no light, but I can see it using a flash light.
Okay, so basically you are in a "no warranty" situation (unless this Hong Kong site will allow you to return it for replacement). The problem you are describing does not sound like a software issue. This seems to be a hardware problem.
You might want to find some kind of "tear apart" diagram for the 101 like http://www.theandroidphone.com/tag/how-to-disassemble-the-archos-101/
Perhaps you will get lucky and it will just be a loose connection or something simple like that. Otherwise you will need to get a new display...which is nearly as expensive as the unit itself. If that is the case, seriously...just wait a few more months and get one of the new Honeycomb tablets.
i had a similar problems some weeks ago with my 101 (was running an older firmware when it happened though)
for me those steps helped, i found them somewhere on the archosfans forums:
- remove sd card if you are using one
- hold down power button for 10 to 15 seconds
- release power button
- tap the power button 5 times
- archos will boot now if everything worked out
hope this helps

Initial Issues with Evo LTE

I received the phone yesterday night and have been using it heavily since then. My intention is not to be a hater, but rather to see if anyone is having these issues. I'm coming from a Sprint GS2 and have not had any of the issues below...dare I say it was smoother in everyday operation?
1. When on lockscreen and accessing settings - lag/slow/studder
2. After initial phone unlock, scroll left/right and lag/studder
3. After initial phone unlock, opening app drawer takes about .5-1 sec to open. After that, it is instant.
4. After killing all apps and going back to the homescreen, scrolling produces an initial studder.
5. When scrolling through homescreens, the screen recognizes a 'long-press' and highlights whatever widget/app was selected and either moves it, or highlights it to resize. This only happens when scrolling through all screens quickly and constantly. I do this to see how quick I can scroll.
I think these are all because of Sense. I remember it being heavy when I had my Inspire, but don't recall having issues like these.
Mine is running pretty smooth.
Might be an app that's not playing nice.
Some folks are having some issues with WIFI. TRy shutting WIFI off and see if it goes away.
I also tend to minimize apps using my location. They might all do a "Where am I" everytime you wake it.

I had this last night. A little airplane mode action brought back my connectivity, and I haven't had it drop 3G today. Hoping it was a fluke.
I have had 1 random reboot since yesterday, but otherwise it has really been running quick and nice. I am truly impressed with this device. Remind me of when I got my OG Evo and how impressed with it I was at the time.
Thanks for the legit replies guys. I usually end up making the threads that idiots reply to, but so far this crowd isn't half bad!
I'm going to keep working with it and hopefully the phone will lose the quirks (idk how but a man can hope).

I've had about 4 random reboots... While in my belt clip and case. Get phone off blt and it's rebooting. Not rooted yet, so that's not it. Just installing all the apps I had on my 3d.
If I can't figure it out and still happening by Sunday I'm requesting a replacement.

Proximity sensor doesn't seem to work when I am on a call. Screen turns off before I get the phone to my ear, doesn't turn back on when it leaves my ear, and if I then turn the screen on using the power button then the screen just stays on during the call even if put back to my ear.
Anyone else?

Yep, I've turned off all of those (even the international roaming guards) and still get the audible notification. Even with the phone on vibrate or silent modes. Changing notification sound doesn't change the roaming notification either...
navigation
When Navigating Screen goes black. Power cycle does not reinstate map only closing in apps works.
When I was connected to wifi, my phone wasn't playing nice with Sprint's data network. Despite the browser working, I couldn't get speech-to-text working or some other things that require data. Turning it off and then on again seemed to fix it, but it's happened a couple times.

Try settings->wifi->advanced (click the menu button), and see how long the phone will keep wifi on if it goes to sleep. I'd just turn it to always stay on.

No issues here with the proximity sensor. It turns on and off when it should. If anything, it turns off a bit sooner than the old evo did, but not an issue either way.
Yesterday (day 1), my speech to text was crap. I'd say a sentence, it would record one word or letter. I cleared the voice recognition cache to reset it to learn from new. Maybe that helped, maybe something on google needed a day to cycle.
One or two fc's for a sideloaded app. No reboots or other crashes.
I am rooted (less than 4 hours after bring it home).
Also, I'm using nova launcher. I like adw ex, but the 3 vertical dots at the bottom are annoying. If/when they update it for ICS I may switch back. Nova works quite well, with almost as many bells/whistles as adw. Also using latest widget locker for the lock screen. I hate sense, and more so the sense lock screen. Several choices are not enough. I have all my frequently used apps right there on the lock screen.
Also, both adw and nova lets you access some of the hidden settings/functions from the settings menu using the 'activities' shortcuts.

[REQ][MOD] Remove wireless charging pop-up notification

There is a pop-up that is displayed whenever the S4 is placed on a wireless charger. It is annoying and the phone is unusable during the few seconds it is displayed (I can't even take a screen shot). The notification reads:
You have placed the device within range. Now charging Wirelessly...

I would love a way to stop the pop up from coming up as well.

Confirmed it works! Just install the "Installer.apk" and then install NottachXposed.apk. Go to the Installer.apk app then under modules, check (don't leave it unchecked) the NottachXposed.apk. Then go to NottachXposed.apk and there should be a toggle for wireless charging notification.
It turned off the pop-up notification but the sound and screen still turns on. Not as bothersome if I silence the phone at night.

Anyone have a solution now?
The whole point of this system was to sit on my nightstand, so I don't have to fiddle with it in the dark. The beeps and screen constantly popping on and off all night is incredibly annoying. Putting the phone on silent or Air-Plane does not stop the phone from lighting up. It does appear that the phone is lighting up to indicate 100%, and then disconnecting and re-connecting around 98%. I understand why the phone does this, but have no idea why the alerts are needed every 2 minutes.
I guess not enough people are using Qi charging to complain yet.

Theres an option in wanam to disable the wireless charging dialog, I dont know if it takes care of the sound too tho.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.
As a new GS4 user, I'll have to say this is my one disappointment. I used inductive charging with my Palm Pre and it worked great. I was hoping that I'd have the same experience with the Qi charging system but now I get woken up between 2 and 3 am each night by the phone cycling the charge. I end up sliding it off the Qi pad so it stops the charging for the night. With the 4.3 update and blocking mode I should be able to turn off notifications but I'll have to test the exceptions so I can still get my emergency texts from our monitoring systems at work. No matter if the notification sound is turned off, the screen will still turn on and off. I'll agree, as the Qi chargers become more popular it may change the way the developers indicate charging but it would have been nice if they would have thought of it from the start.

May be bumping an ancient thread here, but if anyone else comes a-looking like I did, the Wanam Exposed has an option under the Lockscreen to disable the screen from turning on when AC/USB is unplugged that solves this annoyance. If you want to go a step further and make it completely stealthy, rename the charger_connection.ogg in Android/system/media/UI so you don't hear the beeping every 15-20 seconds either.

Wow, thanks for this post! My wireless charging is almost now 100% flawless.
The mod linked at the beginning of this thread, Nottach Xposed, also has the mod to disable the screen from constantly turning on and off, under Framework, uncheck "turn on screen when unplugging from AC/usb". Works sweet.
I usually always have my phone on vibrate, and even with the mods in the OP, AC/USB unplug notification off and renamed my Android/system/media/AUDIO/UI/charger_connection.ogg to charger_connection.ogg.bad my phone still constantly vibrates throughout the night
Any solution to disable the vibrate notification of charging/unplugged??? If I can do this my wireless charging will be 100% flawless for me!
EDIT: http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.eldarerathis.xposedmodule.wirelesschargingxposed works to disable the vibrate notification. Nevermind, when I drop it on the charger it doesn't initially vibrate, but once it reaches 100% then constantly cycles on and off it vibrates throughout the entire night

Hey guy i found out the reason why the notification keeps popping up,
You must see the output amperage. Wireless chargers should be atleast
1.5 output. If lower the notification keeps popping up. Lock screen
On your s4 then put it on the charging pad. Do not use .5 or 1amp.
It will just get hot. I fixed my sister's phone issue just by changing the
Wall charger. Did not need to install or root anything. Hope this helps.
Most chargers say need higher than 1amp for wireless charging.
Thanks guys.

[GUIDE][TIP][HOWTO] Fix SOD, Optimized Backlight freezes and other issues

I've noticed many people complaining about a screen of death (SOD), hang ups and all kinds of problems with their Sony Xperia Z Ultra. I understand their frustration, since I also had this problem the day I got and updated my Ultra. But, I found a method (which I've read about here, but seems like a major number of people don't know about) and my phone has been flawless ever since. Not one single hang up, reboot or SOD. No need to mess with the Optimized Backlight setting or anything.
Now, bare with me, since I could be wrong and am just theorizing here, but the cause of most of these problems is flashing a FTF using Flashtool. But, don't worry. If you want the latest firmware and don't want to wait for your country to release it, you can still use the Flashtool method. Although, if you don't want the SOD and other issues, you'll want to do a little more than Flashtool.
What should I do, then?
Simple:
Flash your FTF file as usual. (If you're already on the desired firmware and experiencing these issues, skip to the next step.)
Download Sony PC Companion
Install and execute Sony PC Companion.
Connect your Sony Xperia Z Ultra to the PC using a USB cable.
Optional: Backup your data from the Backup and Restore option, if you don't want to lose it.
Go to Support Zone on Sony PC Companion.
Click on "repair my phone/tablet" (in blue letters, as seen in the picture below)

Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for it to finish. (Might take a while)
Unplug your phone and turn it on.
Optional: Restore the previously backed up data using the Backup and Restore tool.
Enjoy a bug-less experience.
Don't forget to hit the thanks button if this helps you in any way. :good:
To make short, seems you need to wipe data and make a clean install to fix SOD issue. To do so you can update with Sony Ericson Update Service (SEUS) or flash .ftf via Flashtool. What I did and never had SOD.

Try below step before you can assure it is fixing the issue, as it didn't fix any issues actually.
Go to Settings - Display - Brightness.
Tick back Adapt to lighting conditions. (If you off previously)
Un-tick Optimized backlight.
Shutdown the phone.
On back the phone, did the fake hang appear?
One success login to phone, immediate locking the screen by pressing the power button, did the Screen of Dead (SOD) happen?
Check below to rectified whether it is free of bugs or not, in-fact it is not.
Issue 1 to 3 appear after .510 firmware, issue 4 to 6 appear since 1st initial firmware.
1. Fake hang in next startup once shutdown the phone with condition un-tick optimize backlight and tick adapt to lighting conditions.
2. SOD appear after the fake hang by simply click the power button to lock the screen.
3. English swiping input in Chinese Keyboard at mini keyboard layout is not working. All output is wrong wording. It look obvious it registered the swiping at full screen keyboard layout.
4. Chinese input by typing in most website not working in proper, only swiping is working.
5. Flickering / frame chopping when viewing Youtube video directly via Chrome where it not link to YouTube own app. No issue if watching YouTube at own YouTube app.
6. Download YouTube movie using third party app like JetVD facing same flickering / frame chopping video result.

Yeah... I had a hard time trying to figure out what you were trying to say.
Once I did figure it out, I tried following the directions you gave step by step, and my phone definitely doesn't have any of the bugs you mentioned.
Like I said, I used to experience bugs like that, until I used the method I explained in the OP.
Did you try it?

Maybe you not really understand what I mean. Your above step I did try at .510 and it is same. I had repair my phone before, factory reset before, all same. I not going to try again on .526 since already got people try and use my method, and it happen.
Maybe screenshot let you understand more.
Set as screenshot below:
Immediate Power Off the Phone.
Turn on the Phone, you will notice after SONY logo, they is a fake hang, it take sometimes before continue.
The phone will became 100% brightness after success load to main launcher. You can only change the screen brightness after un-tick adapt to lighting conditions and move the slider.
Immediate click the power button to lock the screen. SOD (Screen Of Dead) appear.
I tried a clean reset / update with Sony Ericson Update Service (SEUS) and still the problem with the Optimized Backlight is there.

fully disable touchscreen when screen off s21?

Hi everyone,
sorry if this has been answered, I tried to search. Since the last samsung update my phone is constantly turning on the torch or calling 911 when its in my pocket. I've tried everything and just cant seem to stop this stupidity!
Is there a way to fully disable touchscreen when the screen is off? When you press the powerbutton and screen wakes up the touch starts again? I dont care about waking the screen up with the fingerprint!
thanks
You should have these settings, they use to be there with Pie on Samsung's.

Turning the display away from your skin and using a case with slightly raised display guards helps a lot. Turning on Accidental touch protection stops it most times.

I have all those setup, I have double tap to wake all off also.
I just installed Touch Blocker but it doesnt behave as I would expect. The touch is still active when on lockscreen/off and then blocks once you unlock it. so there is still a chance could butt dial 911.. hmm

I use the Zizo Bolt case, it provides excellent protection, a two layer system with an outer polycarbonate shell. Never comes apart in a multi impact drop. It has slightly raises display guards that help reduce false touches when using and in pocket. I have 2 N10+'s and use One Handed Operation plus as well as Edge Panels, it doesn't interfere with their use very much.
I don't use lock screen, double tap on/off. If you face it away from your skin and then be careful not to touch the screen when placing it in your pocket it works well. BDU pant button (unbuttoned) cargo pockets are great for these phones. Most times Accidental Lock Protection stops it. The other thing you can do is set the display timeout to a lower value; less time to do damage. However mine are still set to 10 minutes. I habitually double tap it all the time.
Lol, a couple times I pulled it out and saw menus I never saw before. I explore settings etc a lot too. So many buried submenus
911? I'm more afraid of changing a vital setting.
Emergency call is package blocked on my devices as well.

Not exactly what you are asking BUT just got a S21 two weeks ago and pocket dialed police twice - they called first but still= bad.
Tried to get energency tab off lockscreen with Samsung Remote Tutor [ and Samsung tech ] - not possible .
NOW however I have fingerprint enabled .
When phone is in my pocket in 'standby black screen mode' 'screen off'
IF it is jostled around - it goes to the
FINGERPRINT SCREEN -
and can not call 911 .
And I get messages sometimes that screen was temporarily disabled due to random touches or something like that but it turns back on right away.
SO - the fingerprint reader screen acts as a buffer where the 'emergency call ' button is NOT exposed in my pocket .
Questions ? I was very annoyed with this the first day and second day I got the phone .
