[Q] clockwork recovery missing after removing yellow triangle - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I finally got around to removing the yellow triangle today, and all went well, until i tried to get back into to CWM. Its gone. is this normal?
Everytime i reboot I get amn "installing update package' with the image of an android next to a box with an arrow coming out.
How do I get it back again? im running Batista ROM and have a bunch of backups I want to keep using.
thanks for your help!

how did you remove it? if you had used an USB Jig, nothing would have changed your system except resetting the custom counter and removing the yellow triangle. BUT if you have used a stock kernel and flashed it to get rid of it, then your rooted kernel including CWM is gone now.

You might be able to get a fake cwm by flashing cwm from within rom manager but no guarantee.

When you flashed the stock kernel back in, CWM recovery was removed because it is not in the stock kernel package. To get it back, just start up the CWM app (it is still there), and flash the zImage file that you extract from the kernel that you originally used to get CWM. Doing it this way will give you the rooted kernel + CWM recovery without the yellow triangle at boot.

I reflashed the origianl kernal (KE7) using odin. The custom ROM still works sweet. Just no CWM.

CWM is not there.... I have got ROM manager premium, but it doesnt make any difference.. no recovery.

OK, I ended up re-flashing ninphetamine(?) kernal over top using odin an I can get recovery ok again .
I was sure you could reflash an original kernal to remove the yellow triangle, then re-reflash a custom kernal using CWM. (the other way being the usb jig).
Have I missed a step with the CWM method?

E:failed to verify whole-file signature
Hi . i rooted my Galaxy S2 with insecure kernel and then flashed the original KF3 kernel through CWM ..... but I am not able to boot to the recovery mode.. I am getting "E:failed to verify whole-file signature, E: signature verification failed" Device is rooted .... Please help ...

Make life easy for yourselves go to ebay and buy a jig for about £2.50.
If you want to verify root status get root check from the market, if your flashing a secure kernel over an insecure kernel chances are your gonna lose root.

JIG does not working on ROM 2.3.5 the yellow still there!
Thanks,

That looks right... but just in case, here are expanded steps.
1. flash a CF-Root kernel using Odin to get root. (Should include app "CWM Manager" in your app drawer; it's labelled as just "CWM")
2. flash a stock kernel using Odin to remove triangle
3. extract zImage file from CF-Root kernel zip file you used in step 1 (or in your case, you can extract the zImage file from the ninphetamine kernel zip file)
4. push extracted zImage file to your phone
5. start up "CWM Manager" in your app drawer (should still be there)
6. select "Flash kernel"
7. find the zImage file you pushed to your phone in step 4, and flash

[Q] how do I get rid of custom cwm?

Hi, I recently flashed cf-root after buying my gs2. I installed rom manager and flahed cwm 4.0.0.2 from there. However now when I reboot into recovery I get the custom cwm that comes with cfroot 4. If I pull the battery in the custom cwm when I put the battery back in I get cwm 4.0.0.2.
Does anyone know how I can remove the custom cwm or both and then flash cwm 4.0.0.2?
Thanks in advance.
Can nobody help with this?
Yes, in the menu move to reboot using volume keys and hit home
Failing that, odin a stock rom to recover

I flashed my stock kernel but restarting into recovery from rom manager still goes to the custom cwm.
In the original Galaxy S, Samsung bundle the kernel & the recovery in the zImage file in the stock firmware so that might be the case here too. Download the original from samfirmware.com, remove everything from the tar file except zImage and flash the tar as PDA through Odin
Can you not just fake-flash the CWM 4.0.0.2 recovery through the custom CWM (through an update.zip or whatever) as that is what ROM Manager does anyway

I tried flashing the zip from the custom cwm but it says unable to verify whole-file signature.
I odin'd Lightening rom 1.4 and now it seems im just left with the real CWM. yey!
Thanks for all your help.

Using stock kernel after rooting

Hi guys,
I've rooted my Galaxy S2 using CfRoot. To disable the yellow warning triangle, I flashed with original kernel. Since, the root is enabled even after reverting back to stock kernel, do I need to flash insecure kernel image again using CWM manager?
Will I be missing anything by not doing it? Because, all the apps that needs root access are working fine.
Thanks,
baskCoder

You will lost clockworkmod recovery and the ability to use the CWM manager app.
So you will lose the ability to flash stuff from CWM zip, also nandroid backup.
But if these are not important to you then you shouldnt have any problems using the stock kernel.
Usb jig is the real simple way of removing triangle and setting custom rom counter to zero .

You are partially correct.
baskcoder, you did it correctly.
flash rooted kernel that has CWM APP using ODIN
boot phone into Android then reboot back to download mode
flash stock kernel using ODIN
boot phone back into Android
copy the rooted kernel of your choice (recommend using speedmod kernel by hardcore) into your phone using USB storage mode file can be either zImage or *.tar format
run CWM App in your application list, yes, it is still there as long as you don't wipe the userdata partition.
select flash kernel, then select either the zImage or *.tar file
CWM App will just wipe out the boot partition, then extract zImage from the *.tar file, then copy the contents inside zImage to the boot partition.
Because CWM App does not use Download mode to flash the kernel into the boot partition of your ROM, the yellow triangle exclamation will not appear, it will also not add to the custom binary counter either.
Thanks for the reply guys. I tried all the applications that need root access. They are working fine. What feature will I miss if I don't flash with modded kernel? Sorry, I'm new to this.
Thanks for the reply.

Clockworkmod recovery, the ability todo nandroid backup (full system snapshots), and the ability to flash zips via CWM recovery.

[Q] Flashed Stock Kernel, still root? + CWM Update.zip

Hey Guys!
I got 2 questions about root and flashing mods via CWM.
First is:
I rooted my I9100 with CF-Root (thanks for this Chainfire!) and reflashed the Stock Kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle.
Root Checker etc. still says I'm root so do I have to flash back the cfr-Kernel or isn't this necessary anymore?
Secondly:
If I flash a mod (e.g. circle battery mod) and want to flash another one (e.g. crt-effect) and both will modify the framework-res.apk, will the second mod overwrite the first one?
Or will I have both mods active after that?
Thanks in advance.
Kc
1. if you followed instructions and flashed the zimage after using the stock kernal no. other wise flash the zimage that you unpacked.
2. As along as they are different mods, it will not overwrite your previous modifications.
Thank you for answering.
But I was still root after reflashing the stock kernel.
Are there any benefits I will miss when I don't flash the zImage through CWM?
because I still could do everything I wanted to, for example getting root access and browse system folders.
What other benefits will the cf-root kernel give me?
2. Sounds good, thank you =)
flashing the zimage will replace certain links that were over written when the stock rom was flashed.
Not all commands will work properly because the are no command links to certain files.
can you get to CWM recovery?

You just lost cwm recovery by flashing the stock kernel, so good luck flashing any mods or installing roms.
So after reflashing the stock kernel I'm still able to reflash the cf-root kernel via CWM but I will not be able to flash any mods?
Seems a little bit strange for me...
you just need to reflash CF-Root zImage with CWM to have a CWM recovery.
---------- Post added at 03:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:10 PM ----------
for flashing mods and other stuff you need to have CWM RECOVERY!
So without CF-Root I will land in Samsung/Android Recovery Mode instead of CWM Recovery?
Yes that's the point of the cf-root kernel, it adds root and cwm recovery.
Just flash the CF-Root kernel and jig the triangle. That way youll have full access to everything you want to do.Easy.Also might come in handy if you need to clear the counter for warranty purposes.
Yeah I just reflashed cf through cwm and will jig the counter to 0 if I find time to build a jig

[Q] Installing Modified Roms

Hi,
Firstly I will mention I'm a noob. I hgavent installed a modified ROM before, I currently have the latest 2.3.5 KJ2 firmware which I flashed using ODIN.
I want to installed a modified ROM mainly to get a digitial battery display in percent on my notification bar. However it appears all these modified ROMS require flashing through your SD card. The problem is I dont have an SD card. Is there a way to do this through USB only (i.e. Odin)?
Also what ROM and kernel would best suit my simple needs?

save the rom of your choosing on your phones usb storage...there you can flash it easily...so download rom and you will find it if you go in my files then search the folder download and it should be there ready for you in a zip file..
just follow the instructions at the main page of the rom thread that you want to flash and you should be fine..
first though if you are not already make sure you flash a cf root kernel so you get rooted and then go ahead and flash a rom....once you have cf on then you should have cwm were you can flash your rom through there...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
follow the guide in that link (im sure you have done but its late here so sorry) and then will see you have cwm and then flash your rom of your choosing
I'm rooted but I rooted the old way --> flashed an insecure kernel, downloaded this program called S2 root and rooted via USB, then flashed the original kernel back. It appears that by doing it this way, I don't have clockworkmod recovery..
Should I always flash using the way you said?
Ok.. so let me go through the process..
1) Get a CF root Kernel which will allow me to have cwm. Question: Does the kernel version always have to match the 'ROM' version? When I updated to KJ2 I see that under phone info the 'Baseband Version' reads I9100XXKI4. Does baseband mean ROM, i.e. I have KI4 ROM but KJ2 kernel?
2) Flash following instructions from the modified ROM. I can simply store the rom on my phones memory and flash from there. Do I have to do anything after this? e.g. wouldnt I have to flash another kernel from that modified ROM, and in doing so would I lose my root and cwm? How important it for ROMS to match kernels?
Also, when I install the CF root kernel I get the yellow triangle on boot right.. I read the method on your link to remove it but it seems complicated. What is he actually doing to remove the triangle? Is he flashing back the original kernel?
The method he mentioned is the easiest way to flash a custom kernel, without having the yellow triangle.
The kernel doesn't have to match the ROM version. A custom kernel, e.g. like hardcore's speedmod (can be found in the original android section) installs root and CWM automatically.
Flash the custom kernel with Odin. The yellow triangle should appear after that. But CWM should be available and you're rooted now.
Reflash the original Kernel with CWM to remove the yellow triangle.
But wouldn't reflashing the original kernel using cwm defeat the purpose of flashing the custom kernel? Also do I use 'flash an update' or :?'flash a kernel's what's the main difference?

Any stock kernel is flashed through ODIN after rooting to get rid of yellow triangle. Afterwards, to flash any kernel of your choice, use DarkyROM tool.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ficeto.darkyrom&hl=en
Just copy the kernel tar file in to your usb storage and you can flash the kernel within phone using darkyrom tool (no need of pc). Also this method won't give you back the yellow triangle again.
And to be safe, it's a wise idea to buy an USB jig to reset your binary counter.
Thanks for your help Droid. Interesting I noticed that I did not get the yellow triangle after flashing siyah kernel over cwm. Original kernel before that was the stock one modified as per crikelos instructions to get the speedmod.. is that normal?
Ohh I don't get the binary counter thing. Why do I need to reset it? And how and why can a USB jig do this? A link would help. Thanks!

Cant get CWM Recovery To Work

so i rootes my bell sgs2 but never really thought about custom roms. now i want to get a custom rom going but when i try to get to recovery mod it just goes into the stock recovery program so installing the roms fail. when i rooted i flashed the rooted cf-root kernal then flashed the stock to get rid of the yellow triangle but still have root. did i mess up CWM some how?
if i need to reinstall can you give me steps on how to do so?
Thanks
Sounds like you got rid of clockwork flashing the stock kernel, reflash CF and you will have what you need to install roms. To get rid of the triangle you either need to follow these instructions or do it the easy way and buy a jig from ebay for a couple of quid.
http://www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
(1) Make sure you have CF-Root flashed (see the first post). You must have the "CWM Manager" app available.
(2) Make sure you have the same version of CF-Root extracted until you have the zImage file. (ZIP --> extract --> TAR --> extract --> zImage).
(3) Push the zImage file to /sdcard . It must still be called zImage !
(4) Find an original Samsung signed stock kernel (preferably from the same stock firmware you have, but it's not terribly important)
(5) Reboot into download mode (adb reboot download, or boot the device with home and volume-down pressed)
(6) Fire up ODIN, and flash the Samsung kernel
(7) Boot the device with the stock kernel. CWM Manager will still be available.
(8) Start CWM Manager, select Flash Kernel, and select the zImage from CF-Root you previously put on your SD-card. The kernel will flash and the device will reboot.
(9) You will now notice you no longer have the warning triangle during boot, but you are actually running CF-Root with all it's goodies!
(10) In the future, if you only use the Flash Kernel option inside CWM Manager instead of ODIN, the triangle will not return, neither will your flash counter increase. But keep in mind, that CWM Manager can only handle a direct "zImage" if you are NOT running a kernel with full busybox support (this is currently needed for flashing kernels out of .TAR and .ZIP files)
