Fascinate root - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried rooting my Fascinate running on 2.2.1, so far I tried superone click and no root...newbee at this....Please Help
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App

You're far better off posting this in Q&A or you'll be flamed. But to answer your question, go into the development section for the Fascinate and I believe it's one of the stickied topics. You need to use ODIN to apply a recovery then flash a superuser install package. Worked great for me when I rooted my girlfriend's fascinate and installed MIUI!

i used superoneclick and it worked fine but if that doesn't work try the gingerbreak app before you try something difficult

Respectfully and in all seriousness, I've found that when it comes to tweaking around with ANYTHING, if you're unwilling to get your hands dirty then you probably shouldn't do it. When it comes to rooting, "try this easy shortcut instead of learning the proper method" is dangerous advice at best.
I would strongly advise you to at least read the Dev section and General section stickies first so that you understand what you're potentially getting yourself into. I can guarantee you, however, that relying on shortcuts and avoiding research will likely end with a brick or, even worse, a bunch of malware with root access (that would be a disaster).
Trust me, rolling up your sleeves and making an effort to understand what you're dealing with here will vastly enhance what you get out of it (and can potentially give back to the community).

Can someone direct me...?

Cab someone direct me to the "one click root"? And maybe even to the downgrade if you can?
I have to root my replacement device but I have no internet. So I'm downloading everything to my phone then transferring the files to my friends laptop. So much work. Lol. I can't find these things on the XDA App.

There is no "xda endorsed" method to "one click root" because such methods for the thunderbolt are prone to screwing up your phone and leaving the person doing it in a world of headaches (since if they're using such a method, they have no idea how to undo it probably and even less of an idea of how to describe what they did to someone who could help them). The methods that are out there though are just a hacked together automated method of doing what the stickied topic in the development section does manually in steps.
You're better off not rooting if you don't want to try that or wait/pray that someone with time/patience will walk you through that method.

I said endorsed (it's listed in the stickied post for noobs in the development section, but it's not on its own like the manual method) and not prone to errors. Not sure what you didn't understand about it since I never said methods didn't exist and weren't posted. However, that does not mean you're going to see it stickied at the top of the development section and recommended using. Just because it works for you (the time you tried it) doesnt mean doing it isn't gambling with everything being configured correctly and something unexpected not happening outside the scope of what the automation script for rooting can do.

The way you wrote it sounded like you were implying that it wasn't on XDA anymore. I don't really care if it destroys my phone. If it does, ill get a new one or just fix it. I can't install SDK on my friends computer cause he doesn't want it on there. All I want is a link to the thread or download. I know all of the possible dangers in doing this. I have done this multiple times.

even the "1 click" root method for the TBolt requires sdk and adb on the pc. It just automates the scripts for you...

Main version is older??

I'm trying to root, but hboot is telling me that MAIN VERSION IS OLDER when I try to downgrade. There's no other option but press power to reboot. Is there a work around this?
I tried searching for a related topic first on my phone. But I found nothing.

You must not have gotten temp root first and flashed the misc.img.
Try flashing the MR1 RUU and then start the rooting process over from step 1, and be sure you follow every step carefully. If you are using an auto root script.......then I would advise JCase's manual method that is stickied in the dev forum.

Not that I wish any harm on him, but I did warn him earlier in another thread about the risks of using that method and the problems that might happen. Hopefully he works it out. I noticed he lives in Columbus and I'm around there. If he buys me a beer or two, I'll root his phone for free in person
I'm almost wondering if warning them is useful. Ya just know they aren't reading the OP and have little idea what they have on their phone. I know I've told a few people not to, but they usually do. And when it doesn't work, the answer is always the same: "go use the guide".

[Q] Unroot with Mac for Noobs

Noob here,
I've looked and looked and haven't seen anything definitive. I have a Samsung GS II (I-777). Someone had rooted my phone for me a while back but now I want to un-root it. I only have access to Mac and have NO idea how to. Everything on here seems to be written in a different language lol. What's the easiest and most simplest way to do this? Sorry if this is repetitive. Thanks in advance!
Rooting is such an easy proccess. Looking at you, I would not recommend it doing by yourself. Rooting will not get you on any legal issue other than warranty cancelation. If you still insist look at the stickied threads in this forum. I myself would like to explain it, but I can't explain it better.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
Not sure if a virtual machine of Windows would work but I would give that a try if your hell bent on un-rooting.
My question is why do you want to reverse a good thing?

What I meant was that rooting is easy to do. And nothing negatives comes out of it unless you want to get the phone back to store... Since it's a mac and he doesn't have much knowledge of rooting, just let it be.

Well, "looking at you" made me go Whaaaat??? myself. Odd snap judgement from reading one post, which was pretty well phrased from what I saw.
Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434020 which should help - and this thread says it should work with MacOS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432. You'll need to do some more searching and learning (start with the sticky at the top of the general forum). If you don't feel confident doing this, then don't. You really aren't going to gain anything by it unless you have a specific need. Or expand on what you're looking for and maybe we can help.
BTW if you don't use it, the difference between root and unrooted is zero AFAIK. Root just lets you do more, but it's still stock i777 if that's all "someone" did.
Well, the thing is, the root that this person did (not me lol) has disabled my wifi. It's the ZedomaxStockKernel. I did some research on this and it seems that using this method renders the wifi useless. I clearly don't know what I'm doing but will read more in regards to this. Again, I've had the phone rooted for about a month now and I haven't done anything different. (Maybe because I don't know how) I wouldn't mind leaving it rooted but if I could fix the wifi issue, that would be great and then maybe I can learn further about this whole root thing. Reading through the forums though, most people rooting have Windows and not Macos. Which kind of leaves me feeling alone lol

Go into the siyah thread (you can do it on your phone). Download the ATT tar file. Open up mobile odin, select kernel. It will open a window to find your kernel. If you download from the xda app it will be in tapatalk_downloads I think. Select siyah_2.1.13 (or whatever it is). Go down to the bottom where it says flash firmware, hit it. If done correctly, the phone will reboot and everything will be awesome
I'll keep an eye on this thread tonight in case you have further questions.
Forgot to mention, the siyah thread is here in the i777 forum, more specifically look in the development section. The download link is in the first post.

Okay I understood almost everything you wrote! Let me start by saying thank you! Couple of questions so I don't screw something up!
1. Should I download the .tar file directly to my phone? Would that be easiest?
2. I can't seem to find the thread in the development section, care to spoon feed me?
Lastly, when I googled Siyah it gave my a website but I don't know if that's reliable or not.
Thanks!!
Found it!! Will try today and update!

Not to sound mean... But if you are asking about basic stuff, you might want to:
- Read some threads before you start flashing
- use the search function
- follow the thread instructions following the above two suggestions.
Try to troubleshoot yourself first... All your issues are solvable by searching.

I agree with this POV.
If someone is having trouble simply installing/updating CWM, they absolutely need to do more reading, or chances are they will badly mess up their phone.
Using ODIN and installing CWM are rooting 101, and I would advise any SGS3 user to make sure they know these 2 bits of software inside and out, before jumping into CM9/CM10, as both are not fully stable, and will require additional knowledge to get them working correctly, if it is yet possible given the current build states of each.
If CWM installs, or ODIN flashes are not pieces of cake for you, you should probably pick a different ROM until they are.
Yes we all started somewhere, but a big tip from experienced users to noobs, is to learn how to swim, before jumping in the deep end. And CM9/CM10 is definitely the "deep end" of the Android pool, at least until the builds reach RC status, if not at least beta, as things wont work, or are yet to come upstream.
It takes as much time to flame as it does to post helpful advice. How do you want to be remembered?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Telling some one that cant swim, how to jump into the deep end, is not my idea of "helpful" advice.
Sometimes the "helpful" advice is.. "you are not ready yet"
It may not be what the person wanting to jump into the deep end wants to hear, but it may save their phone, until they know what they need to, to get where they want to be.

Thanks man...:good:
I know the sense of panic you have when you trash your phone, here's hoping some users understand that by searching first, almost 98% of the answers are out there.
That being said, I am willing to help out, given what I know, but I am willing to bet there are posts already done that lay it out there, step by step, on how to recover from this...???
Again, to anyone seeing this, not trying to be a **** here, but the search function really has tremendous value when looking, don't just try one term, use several variants of terms when searching. I bet you'll find something, heck..you may find out something off your first search topic that'll get you there better or quicker.
OP ...have you looked at this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736476
Well I'm yet to find a detailed guide, I haven't been able to find one - I'm not going to do something based off a bad or poorly written guide, I am not going to risk breaking my new galaxy s3. I take it you have the SGS3 for AT&T, correct?
What exactly do you need a guide for, upgrading CWM?
I take you are rooted, what version of CWM do you have, and what version are you trying to upgrade to?
What version & build of CM are you trying to install, the file name should give the specifics?
Does the ODIN count matter to you?
okay download CWM for your phone from :http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Rename it to recovery.img , and copy the file to your phone's internal /sdcard
Grab android terminal emulator from the play store and run the same commands starting with su in the box below.
just type: su
then
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

I would suggest you not consider it an upgrade persay...think of it as starting over and look at the two posts above, this ought to help...that is, if you are ATT...Thanks DC for the cool head...and getting us back on topic...:angel:

whats the deal with vroot is it safe?

I've been thinking of using vroot and have read many have already used it with no problem but is it safe ? Is xda going to release this exploit safely without the possible backdoor to china?

Not sure. I believe some of the devs are trying to pick it apart and figure out what it is communicating. Some feel it is safe, others do not. I'm not sure what xda review process is for stuff like this, but they have some pretty talented folks on staff if they have banned the links I would trust their judgement for now until proven otherwise.

Perhaps you could consider reading the thread where this is already being discussed.

yea I have and some say its safe but other say its the devil but its confirmed working thats for sure. I want root but infecting my pc and phone to get it is hardly worth it. I figured it was fair question to ask to see what others thought outside the thread after all this is Q&A:laugh:
from what i have read, no one has found anything malicious or dangerous, just a lot of things that are suspect.
personally, i would just wait until the devs find another root method just to be sure. it isn't worth it imo...
Since vRoot is apparently used to root 3500 different devices (are there really that many?) I would assume that the IMEI is used to identify the device being rooted so rooting can be carried out properly. This is completely my guess since I don't know anything about any of it.
I just used it and rooted. It was a pain in the butt but successful. It's a very simple process also.
