2 recoveries; which is better? - HTC EVO 3D

I used the revolutionary methods to gain root and choose to download and install the recovery. Turns out its a CWM recovery by AlphaRev. It looks like every other CWM but blue in color. Then I notice that there is a recovery by TeamWin. Well which one should I use? I can't find the .img for the AlphaRev recovery, only the TeamWin one.
Which one has a better backup/restore and which one has a better compression (smallest size)?

In case anyone is looking for the CWM for AlphaRevx v4.0.1.4 that comes with the Revolutionary that some haven't been able to flash, here it is---Choose the SHOOTER:

I haven't tried this because my flash was successful, but this is the version that is currently running on my rooted 3D.

I never used CWM on my OG EVO, I always used Amon RA. Use teamwin recovery, it is nice.
There is a zip file attached to the first post in their thread that can be flashed in hboot, it the pg86100.zip. Just put it on root sd card and boot to hboot. Once there it will load the image and it will ask to flash image and press volume up, reboot when done and your good to go.

Yeah, that's for the TeamWin recovery. Some people may want to stay with CWM because it has always worked for them. Just trying to show people that it still available in the link I supplied

Which recovery has less problems? I just read in the TWRP post that there is a battery % issue that shows it at 10%.

It think the battery issue is purely comestic. They added this to their recovery since CWM didn't have this. The bug is that it always says 10% or 99%. Not a problem if YOU make sure you have enough juice on your phone before doing any recovery stuff.
We won't know which has more problems until people have had a chance to evaluate TWRP for days/weeks. The CWM recovery has been out for a while now, but people are making changes to it to suit their needs.

o so its only within the recovery that battery is messed up, not while the phone is on and running android?

Correct. While your up and running your fine. That will only be displayed during recovery. As soon as they get the kernel fix they will update it.

Not sure about that....I read that too, but mine was accurate. It showed 96%. So, it may be a battery stat issue, bad battery, etc. I have no issues with that aspect.

I'd love to have Amon Ra recovery on the EVO 3D, had it on my OG EVO and it worked flawlessly. I never used Clockworkmod on the OG EVO, I'm wondering if I should switch to twrp or not...

I've used clockworkmod on my nexus s and this and never had a problem. Several friends use this recovery on other phones and it seems to work great. I don't understand why everyone is going against it
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App

Well in earlier clockworkmod versions of the EVO 4G it had problems like not wiping correctly and such and people just didn't use it and avoided any problems.
When I first rooted my EVO I started out with Amon Ra and never used clockworkmod, so I never experienced any issues at all.
So I was just wondering if there was anything to gain by switching to TWRP from Clockworkmod.

I agree, I never used it either. I've never had issues with either Amon or CWM but I saw issues others were having and I primarily used Fresh roms and flipz recommended using Amon_ra so that's what I did. I installed CWM while rooting, it seems fine. I installed twrp just to play around with it, it seems fine as well. I'll probably stick with twrp until, if and when, there is an amon_ra for the EVO 3D but I'm sure that either would work fine.

CWM F'd up on my Nands. Then i was stuck with a ROM-less phone. Screw CWM. Oh yeah, TeamWin FTW!
My ''xDU4L C0R3 SH00T3Rx'' shot you down in 3D! -Security Off-

I always used darch's modified version of ra on my hero but am liking cwm---might flash twrp to compare though

[Q] Clockwork...

Since clockwork doesnt check for verification, what if i flashed, say, a Nexus one or Incred rom... what would happen?
Im asking this first so i dont get a brick
I going to go with a brick, But i heard some one on one of these forums talking about how he flashed the radios for the evo on his eris and it didnt brick, He also did a bunch of other stuff that "should" have bricked his phone but did not.
So basically what im saying here is i have no clue, lol
Well i just tried flashing the Incredible MIUI rom. Nothing happened so now im nandroiding.
Anyway when is that rom gonna come to us??

no clue, but using clockwork on your eris is like playing Russian Roulette, eventually you're going to shoot yourself in the head.

My Eris is weird. Whenever i flash clockwork i can only get to it via rom manager. Whenever I hold vol up and power it takes me to Amon Ra.... I use Amon Ra, just flashed clockwork today. I guess my Eris is telling me NO!

Ya that's how mine works too. If you flash it from Rom Manager it won't replace Amon Ra for some reason. Guess it's a good thing though in case clockwork decides to be bad haha.
Well, I'm speculating here, because I've never used Clockwork, but I did notice in a past posting here about nandroid backups under clockwork, that it makes a backup copy of the recovery partition in every backup.
I suppose that might mean that it only temporarily flashes clockwork into place in the recovery and then restores the recovery partition when it finishes (if a nandroid restore has not taken place)...?
I can't imagine why it would make recovery partition backups unless it intended to use them... during restores.
That's just a guess, but it is consistent with your observations.

Issue with ROM Manager

Hi everyone.
I'm pretty new to android, but I'm quite good at following instructions. Basically I've tried doing a nandroid backup with ROM Manager and everytime it reboots to make a backup it goes to a black screen with a phone in the middle of the screen with a red warning sign next to it. I've always tried booting into recovery and I get the same result. I first found this out while trying to follow the instructions for replacing the status and battery icons. Has anyone else had this issue?
I'm using ROM Manager v3.0.0.1 on a stock HTC MySense ROM from TMO running Android v2.2.1.
Thanks in advance for anyone that knows what I'm apparently doing wrong.
when you opened ROM Manager did you select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"? if not try that, it's the only time mine has what your's is doing. I got a little excited to flash Iced-Glacier when I first got the phone and accidentally skipped that step and had same issue
Yeah I first clicked on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and it currently says Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2. I just redid the flash and tried to boot into recovery mode and I'm still getting that error picture upon reboot.
Is there a setting on the phone somewhere that would cause this?
I am not positive 100% but I think I know what you mean; and I had it once due to very low battery charge. See if it is the problem or not.

The phone with the triangle is the stock recovery image. Others have had to try flash the ClockworkMod Recovery several times. You may need to as well.
this is what i did, not sure if your doing the same thing or not. i clicked on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, MY4G came up and i clicked that and then clicked on backup current rom.
Alright so I've tried it with a full battery and I had the same result. I also tried reflashing several times with the current version and rebooting. I even tried to load some of the older versions of clockwork through ROM Manager and everytime I tried it spits out an error. I don't understand how I could be having such a hard time with something everyone seems to be able to do effortlessly.

R u sure u r rooted with S-off? If u r then u may have to flash recovery from ADB. Some people have not been able to get recovery to stick through ROM manager. There is a thread in the development section that explains how to do this.

Really? I have not heard that...I'll have to check up on that. It seems that this problem would be more common, but I guess not as I have had little luck in finding information on my own about this problem.
Just in case anyone is following this thread with the same problem as me, this is the post that the previous poster was referring to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852905&highlight=recovery
UPDATE:
Ok I figured out what was wrong. Apparently although I had root access on my phone and able to run things like Titanium Pro and Adfree and others with root privileges it wasn't good enough.
I followed the instructions here on how to permaroot your phone by pushing gfree to it. Once I did that I attempted to manually flash clockworkmod, which I ended up running into other issues. On a lark I tried installing clockworkmod through ROM Manager after permarooting and it finally installed it properly!
I love doing stuff like this, thanks to everyone for their input as it guided me to finally solving this. I'm off to do a nandroid backup now.

I have NEVER been able to flash Recovery with ROM manager. It says it does it but corrupts if everytime! Note: There has been some recent updates to ROM Manager and I haven't tried lately.

IIRC the security protocol doesn't have to be off to flash clockwork ROM you do have to be rooted, VISONary.apk of course. I've turned my S=on just to make sure and it [clockworkROM] works pretty flawlessly.
Hey hey, it's great to see infraled out here! I am rooted/S=Off via the first VISIONary thread that was posted...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
I installed Clockwork, flashed Clockwork Recovery and was expecting to have to do it twice, as outlined in this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021
It only took one shot for me and it worked perfectly. The very first try, I powered off, powered on w/ vol down, went into Recovery and wham, there was Clockwork in its green glory. I figured I was just lucky and that once I rebooted, it would be lost and I'd have to flash again. Not so. Did a backup right away, worked flawlessly.

Cyanogen Gets my vote... But i've always loved T/DB's ROMS.
Recently rooted My new MyTouch 4G, downloaded the paid version of rom manager. I didn't understand why there are none of the current roms like the iced glacier, roms made by evil and several others listed as possible roms for flashing. The only roms are the cyanogenmod nightly builds. The cyanogenmod 6.1.2 RC2 isn't listed either. Do I need to do anything to get those listed or is that just the way it is???
Thank you,
Vinny

ClockworkMod Recovery Native Support

ClockworkMod Recovery now has NATIVE support for the EVO 3D...
Just Download from the market, select the phone, and click Install...
For those that dont want to use TEAMWIN Recovery, or were unable to get a recovery to flash from S-OFF Process...
thanks, i might use it because i like to manage my backups in the UI, hopefully there wont be any problems like we had in the Evo 4G

Yeah, at one point clockworkmod didn't backup the WiMax RSA keys (doh!)
I'm using CWM now though, I used Amon RA's recovery on the OG EVO. So far so good.
Does the battery charge with fastboot off and the phone off now (ie is it a new version of cwm for the Evo 3d)?

Not sure, I'm trying to find a changelog for CWM, having a little trouble finding it.
EDIT: found this, but doesn't specify minor revisions.

Working good...
Did a full backup/restore to test.... also flashed 2 roms and 1 kernel...
I have CWM Recovery installed from Revolution.
I installed Clockwork Mod Rom Manager and before I try to update I wanted to see what thinks I have and what it's going to upgrade too.
But after poking through the other options it thinks I have NO Clockwork recovery installed.
U have to install the one from the Rom Manager App

I really liked CWM on my Dinc, but they both seem pretty similar to me for the most part. Amon might have a few more options from the looks of it, but I have yet to try CWM for the Rezound back I heard it was kinda spotty. Once it's more stable I'll give it a go and see which one I like better. I'm just glad to finally have a recovery available

+1. That pretty much covers it all. One point is that it was a lot easier to read the screen in CWM on my Incredible than it is with RA Vigor. I have to put my reading glasses on every time or I can't see what's on the screen.

tried installing latest version of cyanogen using clock work recovery, froze at white htc menu. now rebooting using my recovery i backed up and its still loading files after 1 hour. if i ever get my phone working again what rom or method on installing rom should i use, i always used clockwork on my other phones with no prob.

Ps. I'm not a fan of CWM. I've used TWRP mostly, and I love it, although a lot of people still swear by Amon Ra
do yourself a HUGE favor and just flash Amon RA 3.15....TWRP has come a long long way but by far the most reliable recovery is amon, hopefully that solves your issues

Curious:
What ROM are you trying to flash. Some ROMs have custom kernels, and if you are S-on they will not be able to flash from recovery. You will need to flash them from fastboot/hboot. That would cause the ROM not to boot properly if you did not have the right kernel.
