After months of pondering about buying a cheap, but highly rated Android tablet, I took a plunge and bought Viewsonic gtabs, Android 2.2, from tigerdirect.com. Turns out a smart decision! Me & my family love the gtabs, our first, without having to spend double the cost for more expensive Android tablets or iPad. Nice gadgets, at a cheap price. I wish it has hdmi port though. But these are mainly for my kids, to play and to learn, so no hdmi is not a major issue.
Anyhow, I flashed one of gtabs to Gtabcomb Beta 3.3, from my stock TapNTap ROM. I love the speed and performance of Comb, but I currently have the following issues with the Comb:
- Can't play most youtube HD clips in big screen like the stock ROM. I was able to play a few, and compare both side by side, the stock video is more smooth, and better resolution, and in bigger screen.
- Can't play flash on starfall.com, like the stock ROM. Since the gtabs are for my kids, this is a major disappointment.
- Netflix resolution doesn't look good as when played on stock ROM gtab.
- stock camera app doesn't work anymore.
Do you have the same issues with Gtabcomb Beta 3.3 version? I assume a fix is coming soon with new Gtabcomb version?
Thanks to those who spend time on developing this 3.3 version, and sharing steps and experience. Great job!
If video is so important, I would recomend sticking with a Froyo rom since they are the only ones with true, full hardware acceleration. If it's the HC launcher you really like, maybe give the VTL or ADW launchers a try.
Huge thread over in the Android Development forum

The HD video issue is due to the lack of a hardware acceleration in Honeycomb roms. The camera is a known issue and is listed as a known issue in the Gtabcomb thread in the download post. Flash doesn't work in the stock browser but if you download Opera Mobile it should work fine. Not sure aabout the Netflix issue (I don't have Netflix) but it may be related to the no hardware acceleration issue.
Great ROM though, I just flashed it installed it last night myself. Do yourself a favor and replace the keyboard with Thumb Keyboard, you won't regret it.
Yes, HC is a good ROM, very fast. But said, youtube video playback isn't as smooth as clear as the stock 2.2 ROM. I can't play starfall.com (can you try out to see if it works on your gtab or not? ) either, even though i can play flash enabled embedded video clip inside CNN.com.
I currently have 1 in VEGAn-TAB, and 1 in HC. Both work pretty well, but I like the HC better, as it's faster.
I waiting for a new release to fix the smooth video issue and the flash issue. Until then, I love my gtab with HC.
Thx.
I use Opera browser to play flash sites like starfall.com. Works fine. The stock browser just plays sound with no video. I believe this is a known issue.

Could you run a quick HW acceleration test on both tablets and let us know:

My PC, firefox ----------> 60+ fps.
My gtab, HC alpha -----> 4 fps.
Thanks
I got 6fps using firefox beta on gtabcomb 3.3

I just ran it on a Gtab with Opera on Brilliant Corners 1.2.1 w/ Pershoots latest and got 6fps as well.

Screen Orientation and other issues
I installed the GtabComb 3.3 today. Everything works fine except the following:
1. Screen orientation does not change when I rotate the tab. It's stuck in landscape mode. There is no auto-rotate option in Settings, which is weird. I see only brightness, animation, timeout and screenshot in Screen Settings. I'm using the default launcher.
2. Flash videos only play the audio part, no video
Does anyone know the fix for any of these? Thanks a lot!
the screen orentation is probably turned on in the settings causeing the rotation lock as for flash it will not play in the stock browser try opra mobile hope this helps
You guys realize there is a huge thread on this rom already in the development section

Autorotation issue Fixed
I managed to find why my screen orientation was fixed. There is an option called 'lock screen orientation' near the time on the home screen. I changed it to OFF and the screen now autorotates. Hope this helps someone!
I installed this rom too and it is OK for me. Very smooth and fast. Thanks to zyhong!
I installed this rom yesterday after nvflash my g tablet; download when ok after reboot i experience to many force close, flash not playing well camara as well. browser and the rest of the rom it's working just fine
I got the following:
- 13fps for the stock browser
- 18fps for my HP EliteBook 8440p, Chrome
- Opera Mobile: very slow starting the test program. It got stuck at, "How fast is your browser?" for a long time, ~few minutes. When it starts, it is just sitting there at..."Working..."
I've been using Opera Mobile the past few weeks. it works great and fast. Not sure what the issue is.
One app that doesn't work right is the Ants Smasher. On the VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition STABLE RC1 ROM on my 1st gtab, it works fine and nice, in big screen. On my 2nd GTabcomb 3.3 Beta gtab, the app launches and works, but in very small screen.
Do you have the same issue?
BTW, starfall.com's flash does work for me now on my Gtabcomb 3.3. Using it to read books with my kids...Yay! Very happy on that. Now, if the youtube HD video/Netflix playback issue gets fixed on gtabcomb 3.3, ie, it plays smooth and in big screen, that would be awesome!!! Netflix works fine, but not as smooth as the stock Android 2.2 (when I initially got it on my gtabs).
I'm currently running GtabComb and all is well except for known honeycomb issues. Anyone that wants to apply a logo where the small "android" text is at boot. I have a thread at slatedroid in Gtablet theme section.I have a bunch of different logos to choose from and all you need is clockworkmod installed. Each logo is in its own update.zip file that can be loaded like any rom, but it only loads image.Strangely it speeds up boot time and doesn't sit for long time like it does at the "android" text..I haven't figured out why yet but is a pleasant bonus.
I would post a link but I am new here and have to wait.

I tried downgrading to android 2.2 (vegan 5.1) and see if hulu / others will look better/smoother. I heard that the gingerbread doesn't have video accelleration. I'm still getting pretty spotty video.
Any suggestions? Anyone able to get smooth video at this point?
Oh, I'm also using the hulu fixed version of 10.2 and dolphin hd.
Thanks
I think you should get an iPad

Bottom line is if you are not overclocking then calkulin+clemsyn combo is the only rom fast enough for completely smooth video. I recommend the ipad.
PlayOn is a decent solution for getting Hulu onto Android, or any other device. Smooth hulu in the browser would be nice, but it's too much trouble for me personally.
Well I am on my third Gingerbread rom (6th overall rom) and I finally have gotten the Vulkano to stream in all situations. Last night I downloaded CM7's nightly build 58 and flashed my G-Tablet. Installation was very smooth using clockworkmod and all 128 apps were restored using Titanium back with no problems. I had wiped and formated just about everything I could before doing the installation. After that I went to the market and downloaded the Vulkano player and at last sucess. I was able to stream from the vulkano both locally and over the internet. I realize some other people have had sucess using Corwins rom (CM7 based), and that was going to be next if this did not work. I had previously tried G-Harmony with no sucess, and then Vegan Tab GB with limited succes. The strange thing with Vegan Tab was it would stream over the internet however it would not stream when I was home locally. Watching the bandwidth I was getting at home the software player seemed to choke everytime it was over 1 mb/sec. When I was out of the house and connected over the internet it worked fine at speeds anywhere from 300-900k. This leads me to believe the hardware accelleration that is now included in CM7 is working with this app allowing it to run over my local network. Another thing that I have struggled with is getting recorded shows downloaded to my G-Tab. Well I still can not get it to work with any rom and the vulkano player but I have a work around for now. By down loading the videos using UPNPdownloader (avlalable in the market for free) you can then watch the recordings using MOBOPlayer or Rockplayer. Now for even better news when Rockplayers asks if you want to use hardware decoding and you answer yes the videos run close to flawlessly. On the other two GB roms it obviously would not work using the hardware decoding. They did run on the roms using the software decoding but they would stutter even at the lowest recorded resolutons. When playing high quality recordings they would be unwatchable due to the delay in video processing in which the sound which was a full 3-5 seconds ahead of the picture. This would make all sense since the Vulkano records in the H.264 video format and if I am not mistaken that is the portion of hardware accelleration that is working. Well I hope this helps someone else.
Lastly I do miss the Vegan Tab interface, the VT Launcher was very smooth and the rom was much more tablet oriented. I can not wait until gojimi includes this in his rom since the rom is CM7 based if I am not mistaken. Please excuse any typos and good luck.

Interesting. I have a vulkano, and am running vegantab with pershoot's latest overclocked kernel - I have not gotten around to getting it set up, but under that other OS (er, iOS?) I would pull over 2Mbit/sec (more like 3) for local HD content, and 1.5+ for remote (yay for comcast HSI) - I should test it out. I'll let you know what I see tomorrow!

Sounds good I am interested to see what happens. I am currently streaming between 1.6 and 2.0 mb/secs locally using the wireless router Verizion put in when I got Fios. My iphone streams locally between 300k - 600k usually.

VeganGinger just gives me a black screen and spinning "buffering" with the Vulkano inside the home. Meh. Not so good!
For the record, Vulkano (Monsoon) refuses to support G Tab and Android 2.2 at all. I'm now in a legal war with these clowns. be careful on CM7 as you may still encounter buffering quite often and screen lockups.
Vulkano issues on CM7 for Evo
I have the Vulkano player working flawlessly on my Nook Color running CM7.1 RC1
However, I cannot for the life of me get it working CM7 and my Evo 4G. Tried the stable and testing builds. I'm still debating if I really want to move to a nighly, but I might just do it to see if it works and restore back to 7.1 RC1.
BTW, I'm so happy they finally have a root process for the Evo 4G on Gingerbread!

Hello,
I am trying to make if possible the android vulkano application to work with 4.4.2 or Lollipop and stream while the screen is off.
This was possible with my 2.3.7. But with newer devices seems impossible. I am digging up some old vulkano posts incase somebody figured this out.
Thank you very much.
I am on rooted stock 1.2, netflix app does not properly login or when it does, it plays at like 3x speed, so what can I do to fix this?
You need to update your build.prop file. There are a few other threads on this as I was having the same issue. Sounds like Chipmunks movies...
Here are a few...

I used the following and it worked...
CM7 nightlys + Android 2.2 ROMs(Stock, Froyo, ect...)
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
Also, I'm not 100% familiar with stock 1.2 and Netflix. I am running CM7 nightlies with Dalingrin's OC.
I finally kinda got netflix to work on my mn'd 1.2, except the lack of video is kind of a bummer. I did the full build prop fix, which got me further than some of the other build fixes. Any thoughts?

I just got mine working, amazingly enough. I had the chipmunk sound issue with no video. Then I updated my build.prop to HTC Vision and it fixed the sound problems, but still had no video.
I found this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105681
I left my build.prop as model: HTC Vision and manufacturer: HTC and installed the apk on the first page of the thread, mediaclient-1. It is working great now!
I guess everyone has difference configuration on their Nook Colors. I have rooted stock 1.2. From what I've read it seems to work easier for CM7 users.
My rooted Nook seems to loose the video depending on what day of the week it is. I can get it back by going into Manage Applications and hitting Clear data and/or Clear cache. However, I've yet to loose the video running under CM7 from the SD card.
Running Phiremod 6.2 the market version of Netflix plays flawless, audio & video.A little grainy for first few seconds then picture is great.

I currently have 'VEGAn-TAB ROM BETA 5.1 FINAL' installed as of yesterday and it's already crashed while I was watching a video. I know Gingerbread doesn't have video acceleration so I would like to avoid that if possible.

It may not be the rom that caused this...what video player was being used? what file format was the video in? when did you select if you were given the option of hard coding or soft coding? Where there are plethora of apps running in the background? What exactly was the "crash, forced reboot, lock up, video/audio distortion? Did the video file play properly on another device, ie your computer?
There are many players out there, some work well, some work kinda "eh." Some can't handle some video formats, some can play them, but not properly. Some vieo formats require decoding, hard or soft (I like hard when speaking of ice cream, but software decoding ususally works for my videos).
I'm using BC (the 1.2 version of VEGAn 5.1.1), and rockplayer to play video. I've been thinking of trying moboplayer, since it seems to have received rave reviews on this and other forums. I've been able to play .avi files with software decoding. MP4 files play fine, but the quality isn't as good..they're made for mobile devices with really tiny screens.
When I rip or download a movie, I almost ALWAYS make sure that it runs fine on my Acer netbook (same screen size) to get a general idea of what I can expect on the G-Tab.
in a nutshell, your issue may not be the rom at all...VEGAn 5.1.1 is probably one of, if not THEE most stable 1.1 based rom out there.

Is anyone having loading issues with the Youtube app loading really slow on wi-fi?
The advertisements are loading just fine, but the actual video is really slow. I tried the same video on my phone using wi-fi and it loaded very quickly. I recently flashed NX Fire (and rooted) my Nook Tablet. The Youtube app worked fine until after I converted to NX Fire.
Is this a known CM9 issue and should I try one of the newer CM10 roms?

Depends on you rom and what version, most likely it's because the version you used didn't have the Ducatti (read hardware accelerated video's so anything above Standard Definition is going to have problems) features working yet as that was a recent change thanks to the work from our intrepid and tireless developers.
Try the CM10 roms and see how they work, they're all a little bit buggy yet of course as they're all built on a slightly unstable kernel that is still in major development, but it might be worth a shot for you.
