I have the Virgin Mobile version of the phone and I've unlocked it and now using it on the Fido network. When I try to run the GPS Navigation app that comes with the phone, I get the message "Can't get carrier name". Is this app locked only to Bell/Virgin networks? I'd really like to try running this app to see what it's like but it just won't launch and all I get is "Can't get carrier name".

That app is solely for Bell and Virgin. I think it checks something network related. I have a Bell unlocked and using it on Rogers. Same thing happened to me. I just use Google Navigation instead.
Thanks KayvinM. Do you know if there is a way of hacking that app so it works on all carriers? I've seen it at work on youtube and it actually seems like a very good app.
I know of no way to hack it. However, it is pay per use on Bell and Virgin. Because of this, any hacking discussion is strictly against the xda terms of use.

I have the bell sgs2 on rogers and i use the navigation app (not the one called "gps navigator") it works well for me, comparible to my garmin nuvi unit
The problem isn't the app, its the server. The server won't send access to the app without an authorized bell / virgin phone number, use another app... I know its pretty with all the 3D buildings and whatnot lol. But no, there is no work around without finding a way for Bell to authorize your phone, which would require your phone number being associated with their network.

Yes. You can use a straight talk sim with any android phone. I used to. I don't recall settings offhand. Go to my profile and search threads started by me. I posted a guide somewhere with all the settings.

Thanks! What if someone bought an e71 smartphone activated it and just returned the phone. Would they even know that you didn't bring the sim back? Most of the people working at wal mart don't have a clue. Dishonest :yes but would be cheap. Wouldn't they just send the phone back .

Sucks but the phone is tied to the sim. If you did that it would deactivate your sim. Find one cheap on ebay (make sure it's a ST). Call em up to activate, they'll send you a new SIM, throw phone in drawer put in whatever phone you want. I previously had mine trimmed and used in an iPhone 4 before switching to the Atrix.

Can you use any Straigt Talk phone that is gsm with the motorola atrix ? or does it have to only be the nokia e71?

I am using the Atrix with a nokia e71 sim. From everything I read (I did quite a bit of web-research) the e71 is the only GSM phone anyone has had any success with.
so i hard bricked my vibrant and im sending it to mobile tech videos next friday and i wanted to know if its unlocked if it would work on virgin mobiles network because i currently have them. either way im un bricking it but they offer unlock services so i was gonna pay the 10$ extra to do it cause i love the phone. if not ill use it as a play phone for games
Edited: I gave the wrong advice. I was thinking Straight Talk. You were asking about VM. I believe below poster is correct, and since VM in the USA uses a CDMA network, then it would effectively be impossible to use your Vibrant with their service.
Virgin mobile in the US is a cdma network so you cant use a vibrant with it unfortunately.

There are a couple free apps in the Google Play Store to unlock your vibrant if you decide you would like to use it on a different network in the future

Your options for service other than T-Mobile are at&t, straight talk(uses tmo and at&t but its cheaper) simple wireless and depending on where you live there might be other providers . Make sure its GSM and it will work but that doesn't guarantee 3g service. That depends on which frequency bands the service provided uses for 3g services. I have a captivate (at&t sgs1) unlocked and use my second tmo line, I don't get 3g on it because they don't share the same 3g frequency bands.

So, just got a nexus 7 and want to to use my Amaze to tether to it for mobile data. I've searched around A LOT and not found a post that answers my question. I've seen several posts about tether hacking APN's and "viewing formats"? to trick T-MO into seeing the downloaded info as being a mobile device, or specifically an Android device. I don't want the hassle or know if it's possible from my tablet to my phone. I am actually looking for an APP that permits tethering. I am willing to pay for it, but I haven't found one that works. I've tried several free versions that permit you to test the app before buying the paid version. And some others that try using the stock tethering but use the aftermarket APP to get to it. Nothing works. Either T-MO blocks it still, or it can never fully connect. Does anyone know an app that works? I have an unlocked bootloader, and am running Eclipzes speed rom. I AM S-ON. Will S-OFF help? Any advice is appreciated.

That works for me and a stock only ever temp rooted Amaze 4g. You said you are willing to pay, then you could just pay T-Mobile if that is the case. No need to pay any 3rd party if that what you decide.

Yeah, I meant pay for an app once and be done. $15 per month for the foreseeable future just to access to my own data plan is stupid. I'll try that method. Does anyone know if I go back to gingerbread if I'll regain the feature? Has anyone tried this? Hello folks, after lots of research I found myself compelled to open a new thread about this problem. I read in some places that it&t locks its devices not letting the phone use WiFi tether. Well, I unlocked my bootloader and rooted the phone, and im currently using elegancia Rom. Im not really interested in WiFi, only in tethering. I tried different roms and the results were the same. Any help?

Are you on a share plan or a regular plan with AT&T? I know that Tethering is included for free with Share plans but AT&T charges extra if your on a different plan. You may need to have the feature added to your account.

I bought my phone on a travel to California, but I'm from Brazil. I unlocked my phone in order to have it working with my local carrier.

Then you may have to reach out to your carrier to make sure you have the feature enabled. Most likely it is being blocked by your local carrier.

I hardly think so... I had a HOX and everything worked like a charm.
I just bought the full version of PDAnet and I'm using it. It's a shame to have to buy an app to do something that the phone itself should do by itself.

Are you looking for tethering it reverse tethering??
Have you tried Fox-Fi tether from the Play Store? There's many apps on the Play Store that enable this feature.

Sorry didn't see that. I know it is ridiculous having a feature disabled on your $700 phone that is built in. And having to use a 3rd party app.

So I have this Motorola Photon,
I rooted it and it has the latest update prior to the rooting.
I would like to unlock whatever it is that I need to in order to get Free Wifi for my laptop.
I would also like to be able to stream Netflix on my laptop since I don't want to pay for Cable and internet.
If anyone could give me step by step instructions, that would be most helpful.

You can install the wifi-tether app from the play store. Just beware of any contract issues that might bring up with your cell provider.

How do I get around my wireless provider? I have Sprint, my brother and I are on the same plan. He has the ability to get free mobile hot spot, via root etc. He wont tell me how to do it "figure it out yourself" So here I am. If you have any info or a step by step pretty please let me know.
