So I have this Motorola Photon,
I rooted it and it has the latest update prior to the rooting.
I would like to unlock whatever it is that I need to in order to get Free Wifi for my laptop.
I would also like to be able to stream Netflix on my laptop since I don't want to pay for Cable and internet.
If anyone could give me step by step instructions, that would be most helpful.
Thank you in advance for your time and help
:::Cheers:::
You can install the wifi-tether app from the play store. Just beware of any contract issues that might bring up with your cell provider.

What WiFi Tethering app do you recommend
Also:
How do I get around my wireless provider? I have Sprint, my brother and I are on the same plan. He has the ability to get free mobile hot spot, via root etc. He wont tell me how to do it "figure it out yourself" So here I am. If you have any info or a step by step pretty please let me know.
Thanks
Your brother rooted hits phone and very likely loaded this WifiTether app: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list.

Free no not without rooting or paying for an app.

Follow these steps each time you want to wireless tether for free in this exact order.
1.) Open the mobile hotpot that came with the phone and enable it. If this is the first time running it, configure the hotspot how you like.
2.) Go to your phone dialer and dial "*#*#4636#*#*" without the quotes. This will access the phone testing menu.
3.) Go to Phone Information.
4.) Scroll down and tap "Turn radio off"
5.) Now tap "Turn radio on"
6.) Enjoy your free wireless tethering!
Remember, you need to perform these steps each time you want to tether.

I already tried this after reading it elsewhere and confirmed it works. It's not going to screw up your phone if you try it if that's what you're worried about.

It's weird though because the wireless tether app, no matter what version I download wont offer infrastructure mode, only ad-hoc. And some of my devices are only compatible with infrastructure.

Easy and free wifi hotspot
I spend most of my time lurking, but post every once in a while. Here is what I did:
If it's rooted then you can use Google's Wifi tether app for free.
Install v. 2.0.7
I bought my DX2 today and had it rooted with Gingerbreak and installed this, and it works for me. No problems. I miss being able to talk on the phone and use data though (from last phone).
Hope this helps!
It wont let me post links. Hmmm. Go to:

Unfortunately for now the only way that I have found is to pay for the Sprint Mobile Hotspot. I was Fortunate enough to have been Grand Fathered into Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data because I have been a customer since 1997 and was not to thrilled when I was told it was going down to 5GB per month. I called Sprint, ended up speaking with a Retentions Manager (Politely) and she took care of me and kept me at Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data. I was really upset and let it be known I would take my 3 lines to Verizon.
I had it for FREE on my OG EVO but needed Mobile Hotspot when I moved over to the Photon.
mine works through open garden tether.
Perroype3 if your phone os rooted. You can use free tether hotspot wifi from your phone to laptop. Go head search wifi tether app from market. Even with 3G or 4G
Good luck

Give that a shot. I haven't tried it personally, so let me know if it works for you. Should, if not, I can link you to a couple other free ones I've found.
i switched to sprint from tmo recently. so far i love it. i have owned a g1, moto cliq and hd2 and have always rooted my phones with no problems. im a little wary of rooting my photon as i still dont understand very well how cdma works vs gsm. my question regards activation. how does one go about activating a recently rooted cdma phone without having to pay for the activation fee? with a gsm phone all thats needed is inserting the sim card. but what about cdma un general or sprint in particular?
many thanks.
ps: i did my research but found no clear answer.

activate it on sprint.com after logging into the account.
First, call Sprint and ask for them to remove or credit the activation fee, If you don't succeed at first, try again. I went through 4-5 reps before I got my activation fee waived, call telesales, if they are not willing to credit it, ask for a free accessory.
To Root Your Device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217416
This link is to the AIO Root for the Photon. Follow the directions, and root. Your phone will reboot many times during this process, do not unplug your device.
Also, please join the Motorola Photon 4G XDA Fan Group, click on the link on my signature for more information.
If I helped you, be sure to click the Thanks Button!

Tho if the phone is already activated before rooting, you won't have to reactivate after.

If may have to activate it but only a one time charge when u first buy or setup ur phone
The phone activate is more like a network registration

unless they changed it online activation is free.

The only difference between GSM and cdma is network technology and radios. The root procedures and theories after it are all the same regardless of the network type.

I would just like to mention that the one click root method mentioned above didn't work with clockwork recovery at least for me anyway. If you have any plans of flashing roms and kernels to this phone in the future you may want to follow the guide that qbking posted here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwRjFrzClBs and here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfJJ0h4d-80&feature=relmfu
big thanks to qbking for these I would've had a hard time rooting w/o his help.
So, just got a nexus 7 and want to to use my Amaze to tether to it for mobile data. I've searched around A LOT and not found a post that answers my question. I've seen several posts about tether hacking APN's and "viewing formats"? to trick T-MO into seeing the downloaded info as being a mobile device, or specifically an Android device. I don't want the hassle or know if it's possible from my tablet to my phone. I am actually looking for an APP that permits tethering. I am willing to pay for it, but I haven't found one that works. I've tried several free versions that permit you to test the app before buying the paid version. And some others that try using the stock tethering but use the aftermarket APP to get to it. Nothing works. Either T-MO blocks it still, or it can never fully connect. Does anyone know an app that works? I have an unlocked bootloader, and am running Eclipzes speed rom. I AM S-ON. Will S-OFF help? Any advice is appreciated.

I used the APN change and built-in tethering app as found documented in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332627
That works for me and a stock only ever temp rooted Amaze 4g. You said you are willing to pay, then you could just pay T-Mobile if that is the case. No need to pay any 3rd party if that what you decide.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Yeah, I meant pay for an app once and be done. $15 per month for the foreseeable future just to access to my own data plan is stupid. I'll try that method. Does anyone know if I go back to gingerbread if I'll regain the feature? Has anyone tried this? I would be willing to go that route, the Nexus is my play toy now so it won't bother me soo much to be running 2.3 on the Amaze. Although I'll miss speed rom...

ATT wants $50 more on top of the $160 we are already paying to upgrade the data plan in order to enable tethering on my HTC One X. This is robbery. I've tried three tethering apps and my phone is rooted. Nothing seems to work.
Please advise.

Yeah, I don't like the plan games and don't have time to figure that mess out. I'd rather stick with root and figure out a tethering method that works. What is the best app to make this happen?
There is a way to use ES file explorer... I don't remember exactly how it is, look for it

flash a custom rom then you can easily achieve tethering
if you want to stay stock rooted, there's a mod to remove AT&T from the signal bar so it just shows 3G, H+...etc that will also allow you to tether directly from the built in hot spot. forgot the mod name otherwise i would have thrown you a link. you can probably find it on xda

That's fantastic news. When rooting the first time, I used this toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2587677. It has run apps requiring root so I think it is still rooted although I wish it would tell me when it updates because ATT no longer seems to find any except for individual apps. Once I got it rooted, I didn't follow through with a custom ROM because I didn't know how to check the popularity and stability of them. I would love to have tethering so that I can hot spot my phone when needed, and I would also like to have 'real' call recording as opposed to microphone based call recording. Assistance in where to go with this would be greatly appreciated.
