new to cdma rooting. quick question - Motorola Photon 4G

i switched to sprint from tmo recently. so far i love it. i have owned a g1, moto cliq and hd2 and have always rooted my phones with no problems. im a little wary of rooting my photon as i still dont understand very well how cdma works vs gsm. my question regards activation. how does one go about activating a recently rooted cdma phone without having to pay for the activation fee? with a gsm phone all thats needed is inserting the sim card. but what about cdma un general or sprint in particular?
many thanks.
ps: i did my research but found no clear answer.

activate it on sprint.com after logging into the account.

First, call Sprint and ask for them to remove or credit the activation fee, If you don't succeed at first, try again. I went through 4-5 reps before I got my activation fee waived, call telesales, if they are not willing to credit it, ask for a free accessory.
To Root Your Device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217416
This link is to the AIO Root for the Photon. Follow the directions, and root. Your phone will reboot many times during this process, do not unplug your device.
Also, please join the Motorola Photon 4G XDA Fan Group, click on the link on my signature for more information.
If I helped you, be sure to click the Thanks Button!

Tho if the phone is already activated before rooting, you won't have to reactivate after.

many thanks. i was under the impression that everytime you loaded a new rom it had to be activated again.
thanks again

If may have to activate it but only a one time charge when u first buy or setup ur phone
The phone activate is more like a network registration
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

unless they changed it online activation is free.

The only difference between GSM and cdma is network technology and radios. The root procedures and theories after it are all the same regardless of the network type.

I would just like to mention that the one click root method mentioned above didn't work with clockwork recovery at least for me anyway. If you have any plans of flashing roms and kernels to this phone in the future you may want to follow the guide that qbking posted here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwRjFrzClBs and here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfJJ0h4d-80&feature=relmfu
big thanks to qbking for these I would've had a hard time rooting w/o his help.

vibrant to verizon

I'm looking around and I'm curious if I can get a vibrant from tmobile to work on my verizon account somehow. Sorry for the lack of searching but I'm out and about at the moment.
No. Not ever. Sorry. Also post questions in Q&A.
I'm petty sure its impossible. The vibrant is a GSM phone and verizon runs on CDMA.

no. Verizon uses CDMA technology and Vibrant runs on GSM, also ur gonna get flamed cuz its in the wrong section.
No.. that's like trying to say can i install a intel processor on AM3 (AMD) socket. It's two different things and would never ever work.

The actual answer is yes, but not in the US of A - in Europe Vodafone is Verizon partner and it offers GSM service.

And have the widget redirected to Bing. I know you can root it and change it and all that but I still think its unfair to the users who aren't rooting. It's just absurd that they restrict things like this.
Also not a huge fan of Verizon's exclusive apps like Skype, NFL, etc. I know you could extract it in APK format and do it like that but it's not healthy to make exclusive apps.

Iam thinking that you can do it, but first you need to unlock your phone.. First you need an activated Tmobile sim card placed into vibrant to go to next steps... Second look into market searching for "samsung unlock" and install and run it..it will give you the unlock code that the phone will ask you when you replace your verizon sim card, so write down all the info... third turn off vibrand and replace tmobile sim with verizon one and boot the phone... Enter the unlock code that you get from step 2 and enjoy your new unlocked phone!!..
I dont try it yet because I dont have the need, but I think that it will help you ...

This post is incorrect. Verizon does not use sim cards. The method posted here will unlock your phone for other GSM service, but since Verizon is not GSM this will not work.
Also, I really am curious since it happens so often, how do people keep posting in development and claiming they are confused about where to post?
I'm not making fun of anyone, this is a serious question. There are two forums: one is labeled Q&A and one is labeled development. How is it possible so many people make this mistake?

Wow. Some of you people clearly should not be flashing anything to your phones.
I have seen some of the worlds stupidest people on a forum with some of the worlds smartest. If you don't know what qna means then put you fing diaper back and go back to first grade. I'm sick of all this non dev chat in the dev section. If you don't know what cdma and what GSM is then Google it. Don't give the I'm to lazy to search excuse cause that's a bunch of bull.
GSM: most of the world, att T-Mobile.
Cdma: Verizon and sprint.
If a phone is cdma it will not work on GSM. And vise versa.
Now stfu noobs and gtfo.

It's so simple. There are two completely different technologies in question here. Cdma which Verizon uses and gsm which t-mobile and at&t use(which is why I-phone works on t-mobile). And to set the record straight about sim cards,I have seen several black berrys with sim cards on Verizon.

Those ones for Verizon that have SIM cards are the world editions of the phones and can go outside of the USA and use a local carrier that uses SIM cards (e.g. Vodaphone). CDMA and GSM are not compatible technologies. You cannot use one type of phone on the other network.
Lol, let the flaming and ranting begin!!!!!

Need ## code to reset phone and go through hands free activation again

##72786# will not erase your data (apps, etc.)
##786# will do a factory reset.
You will need your MSL.
Been having 4G issues too. They're claiming nationwide 4G connectivity problems. the code they had me use is ##3282#. From there go into "Data Profile" hit menu and then "Restore". It goes through Hands Free Activation when it boots up.
##72786# was the one I was lookin for thx

Be careful ... we ARE known to get things right.
Of course we get things wrong too, like a phone being "DBR" or "LD".... LOL !
If you need the definition of those 2, shoot me a PM and I will tell ya. PM your phone number while your at it.
J/K ... it takes a lot to be a tech, whether it is a Repair store or on the phone.
It is hard to imagine the staggering numbers of " dumb " people owning smart phones.

Your right Ruff ... it is a shame when a " tech " can't provide an answer to your legitimate questions. It reflects poorly on those of us that go the extra mile for our customers and can provide the correct answers.
You can help us (techs) by providing as much info as you can right at the beginning of the conversation and asking for it to be acknowledged... but if the tech doesn't listen or acknowledge your info ...by all means ask for a supervisor.
Most of all stay calm and collected, we do have an " eject this ***-hole button ".
The techs that answer your call live in a " cube city " while at work, and unfortunately, do no have a chance to work with as may devices as the techs that are in a repair store.
Question ...have you done a Profile and PRL update on your phone ?

HTC Rezound On PagePlus...Anyone been successful?

Hi guys, I want to buy a HTC Rezound & keep my pageplus service. Just wondering if anyone been successful activating it on Pageplus with everything working (Besides 4G)?
I'm coming from a Droid X2 & The community is great but it's also pretty much dead since the bootloader is locked.

Are you happy with your page plus service? Do they really use the verizon towers? Thats what I have been told. I am looking into switching to them. There is a company near my home in NH that will unlock phones and you can get any service on them. I am seriously considereing it......But am a little leerey about it...I need my phone for work and home so I must have good service. They told me it would be $100-150 to unlock my 4G phone. They are not 100%sure they can do it yet, so if they can;t theres no charge.
I was thinking of just getting a regular used 3g smartphone on craigslist and setting it up with pageplus...just to see how the service is, before cancelling verizon.....sound like a good idea or a bad one?
Thanks

[Q] Sprint doesn't recognize my Photon

Bought my dad a replacement Photon 4G off of Amazon. Tried to do a ESN swap online and was instructed to call Sprint. They're saying that the ESN on the phone is not showing up in their system. Now I'm no newbie when it comes to phones. I've sold almost every carrier there is and I've been rooting, flashing, unlocking and jailbreaking device for a couple of years now. But I'm looking at a almost brand-new looking, Sprint branded, Sprint bloatware loaded Motorola Photon 4G. I've searched high and low on here (XDA) and everywhere else online to no avail. Any ideas? By the way I did contact the seller and the phone was a warranty replacement and emailed me a copy of he paperwork from Motorola
I'd take it in to a Sprint store and have them give it a shot. Unless the ESN is bad (doesn't sound likely), it should work fine.

My phone was the same way. Neither recognized by Sprint or Motorola. Turned out that my phone was likely a development phone for testing gsm and had a unique radio. You might have to use yours on a gsm carrier whether or not the baseband you have is unique. Just out of curiosity, what is your phone's baseband?

Wouldn't work because my dad has Sprint. Anyhoo the seller sent me another Photon and allowed me to keep the first one. Now my dad is up and running. I'll take your advice and flash the kidi radio for it but I'd still like to know what's up with the original phone.. Thanks!

[Q] I need help with flashing a sprint LG G3

I'm that guy that ignored every warning sign of a straight up scam. I bought a sprint LG G3 on the premis that cdmaflashsoftware.com could flash it to work on Bluegrass cellular. His only payment option was moneygram (I am aware that I'm a dumbass so spare me the insults). Well now I'm $350 dollars into this phone and still am not sure if it can even be done. Can someone shed some light on this subject.

Have you tried Lg flash tool to get back to Sprint? I would think if your efs is still good you should be able to flash sprint tot.
Don't know anything about your personal situation but if you can't tot back I'm afraid you're screwed.

First of all thank you for your help. It is completely stock and is still under sprint. The only reason I'm pissed at this guy is because I bought the phone only because he said he could flash it. Nothing has been done to the phone at this point. He just took my payment and now ignores me. Again, don't know what I'm doing but can follow instructions well. Lol

Just took a quick look at their web site. It looks like Bluegrass runs on a GSM network, unlike Sprint's CDMA. BUT, the Sprint G3 is a world phone, and has a GSM radio and SIM slot. If you can get Sprint to unlock it for you (and since you're not under contract they probably will), you could then insert a Bluegrass SIM card and see if it works. If not, it will still work on Sprint, and you can resell it.
Actually Bluegrass is cdma also. I did try putting some card in though, no service.

It will not worked because the sim slot is locked for Sprint only. The only way to get a Sprint phone sim unlocked is to call Sprint and ask them very nicely. They may or may not do it for you, I have heard the phone has to be activated on a Sprint account for 90 days first. The only thing you can do is call Sprint customer service and try to ask them nicely. Good luck.
Yes I've done that I think. They gave me the unlock code or msl code. When I go to change settings by dialing ##data#, it asks for a 6 digit code to edit. and when I put in the msl code, it allows me to make the changes.
