X is a variable, X hasn't been declared yet.
X = whatever you want it too.
In our case it's freedom to install/remove whatever we want, flash custom roms (AOSP, MIUI, sense), or custom kernels (higher O/Cs, better battery, camera, etc...)
X = Full Device Freedom.

I have reason to believe he was a seed planted in January of this year.
Well I for one am very satisfied and very excited for the future of this device...I also am proud of our devs for being so talented and dedicated and diligent..I mean what they did is amazing and way beyond most of our understanding..our device will now be transformed into an ultimate speed machine..if anyone says they are not satisfied with root after the efforts put forth that would make me suspicious of that person..either that or a very unappreciative individual.
In some strange way I feel let down as it didn't fix the debt ceiling.
Seriously though HTC will probably have no issue knowing what revolution did. They can hook up a hardware debugger and step through their own code. Somehow I don't think they care that much at this point.
If you want to now how they did it take apart the tool. If you don't know how to do that then you do not need to know what exploit they used

well, with my Atrix, until we get our bootloader bypass straightened out, we're just running Pseudo-ROMs right now (AOSP SMS, Gingerbread theme, etc.)
I'm not sure how this will affect your root though? I know that even my Inspire was a b**** to root, and all I had to do for my Atrix was SuperOneClick.

It'll be like the DX/D2. No custom kernels, no totally getting rid of Sense if you don't want it, etc. With root you can remove bloat from /system/app. But like I said, not sure if this will affect root or not.

Yes, but look at the all the development for the Motorola devices. The Atrix, it seems like, is the only device that seems like it has a chance to run custom kernels besides the OG Droid.
The Defy has 2nd init running, which allows for ROMs, but not kernels.
Evo 3D devs have a lot of work to do if they wanna crack this, I think.

We should be able to get partial root, similar to what was originally released from unrevoked. No custom kernals or ROMs, but you will be able to run any app that requires root as well as remove anything from the ROM that requires root access i.e. remove from system/app

Personally, I wouldn't rely on the EVO3D forum to stay abreast on news about rooting or anything. a certain Mod killed the developers desire to stick around here.
head over to the Sensation area, and you'll find that people have found ways to make the root stick 100% until actual reboot occurs and so on. that is where I'm staying up to date.
My temp root lasts until I reboot. I used the script found in the developers section and so far I've maintained root all day. At least, Titanium Backup works everytime I fire it up.

This technically should not be called "Temp Root", in a traditional sense.
Perhaps "Momentary Root"
I would be satisfied with the Traditional Temp root since 99% of my need for it is just to run Hot Spot and I don't care if it's a few clicks.

considering that haus has a ENG bootloader, why doesn't he just get temp root, then flash it onto the phone? They would have S-OFF.
I think all this time is being spent on a custom recovery made by Team Win that is supposedly packed with features. That is great and all....but I would prefer a faster release with less recovery features initially...before HTC beats them to the finish line.

Our bootloader is still write protected......So, even though we have the eng. loader from the early system dump, it still can't be flashed over the one that we have without cracking the write protection first.

That is interesting. Because root should allow you to change permissions. Getting temp root was the last hurdle at one point in xhausx's thread in the dev forum and the irc chats. Unless this "temp root" is really limited? I dunno

That was my understanding as well based on other android phones, however it seems HTC has substantially changed the design of the phone. I have followed a few of the developement threads, post for post since their inceptions and it turns out this is something entirely new that our devs are having to deal with. Sorry I can't find a link to where it was referenced......If someone could and post it that would be great.
Found it. This is copy & pasted from RVDigital's Faq sheet in the developement section:
What about S-OFF?
20:10 <@agrabren> Short of "where are we at for s-off".
20:10 <@joshua_> Sure. This device is eMMC, and also has a signed bootloaer. This means that S-OFF is a ways further out than just soft root.
20:11 <@joshua_> I can answer from my experience working closely with the AlphaRev X team that S-OFF on Sensation is goign to be harder than previous devices we've worked with.
20:11 <@joshua_> I think EVO 3D is very similar to Sensation, so I suspect the same to be true there.
20:11 <@joshua_> Someone asked me what eMMC is: Older phones (EVO 4G) are based on NAND flash; eMMC is a different type of flash.
20:12 <@joshua_> eMMC has different types of write protection that we haven't worked with before.
20:12 <@agrabren> And we plan to work together to solve some of these issues.
20:14 <@joshua_> (We've all been working pretty closely on this, including scotty.)
20:14 <@agrabren> you think this particular exploit will eventually lead to s-off, or is it too early to tell?
20:14 <@agrabren> (Sending this one to joshua_
20:15 <@joshua_> agrabren, the AlphaRevX exploit requires userspace root, and that was one of the big things holding it back on gbread
20:22 <@agrabren> Joshua: whats the difference between unlocked and s-off?
20:22 <@joshua_> S-OFF, unlocked, etc are fuzzy terms, especially now that we are on eMMC.
20:23 <@joshua_> S-OFF used to refer to a specific configuration in which the radio told hboot that it was "OK" to flash anything it wanted, essentially.
20:23 <@joshua_> (It also would refer to an ENG hboot.)
20:23 <@joshua_> On eMMC, that state no longer exists.
20:24 <@joshua_> unlocked is not really a term that applies to CDMA phones; in general, it refers to the ability to put a SIM card from a differnet carrier into your phone. the "NAND lock", or write protection, or anything like that does apply, and refers to being able to write /system
20:24 <@joshua_> (I think that's needed for Cyanogen.)
Team Win seemed pretty confident about releasing s-off to the masses or whatever. They made temp root sound like it ****s up your phone at one point. I hate having to use an exploit when ****ing htc can just release it to us in an official ota. I dont understand why they are waiting. Bunch of **** suckers. I really wish Team Win didnt tell everyone they had temp root so that HTC would still have more pressure on them. DONT FLAME BECAUSE OF MY OPINION!

It was a built in feature of gingerbread, was even one of the things they demonstrated during the gingerbread presentation. The reason you may think it was special for custom roms is that most carrier stock roms disabled it for whatever reason.

From what I gather it's possible, though not likely there is an exploit for post OTA unlock in the source. It will help development in that 2.04 ROMS such as Viper1.2 will soon have compatible custom kernels whenever the developers of their respective kernels update them.
I suppose there can be other possible benefits but I have not heard anyone mention them.
Kernel source won't help bootloader unlock.

Ah, My mistake, thought I remember someone saying it was possible there was something helpful in there.

For some reason one guy essentially spammed every thread he could find saying that somehow kernel source=bootloader unlock, but that is completely untrue.

Dang. I was hoping this would be true.
My wife's dna took a swim. Had to cash out her another. (crossed fingers for non ota) but I lost.
She wanted dna even after I warned her it was probably unrootable. She said Dna. Well a few days later she is yelling @ me to fix this garbage lol.
Crud. Looks like jtag. Is in her future

Garbage I would probably love my DNA even stock. I would just have an itch to tinker with it because that's who I am... but if she isn't the one tinkering, I don't see what her problem is

I guess she is used to stellar battery life, not having all the bloat, being over clocked and fast as all get out on Viper rom.
The area she works gets better signal with old radio's while I get better with new radio's??
No wife tether
Missing a few root only apps, missing data since she can't restore.
Look don't take offense. This phone is great, but when you get used to certain things is hard to go back.
That's all

lol No offense at all. Just most women don't desire their phones to be tinkered with, at least from what I've seen. I had to spend a long minute convincing my girlfriend to tinker with hers

Now as soon as we get a new Andy she hands it over for pimping.
And sorry, I have just saw a few arguments over this topic and was trying to avoid it

Unfortunately mine uses her phone, a One X+, for work [and it was given to her by her company] so unless it becomes unusable, I don't get to play with it

Wait a minute, your wife wants you to root her DNA so you can put a "wife tether" on it?
that might be TMI
