I have to choose between a refurbished Samsung Captivate or Motorola Atrix 4G.
Which way do you suggest and why?
ATRIX. Since it has the latest tech and specs and will get more updates. The ATRIX is wicked fast.

I suggest Atrix if you like being future-proof, and useful accessories.
Samsung Cappy if you can't wait for more ROMs to pop up. Also, if you're going to buy a phone based on the screen, the Cappy.
I owned a Captivate myself, and if you do end up getting it, put a ROM on it ASAP! The captivate has horrible GPS problems, and some kernels and ROMs try to fix that, but they still can't fix it completely. Also, on start-up, prepare to wait a couple minutes for everything to load.

Artix, hands down. I have both, used the cappy for a while and now have had the atrix for almost a year.
My experiance with the cappy, it has bad battery life, horrible gps but great for graphics. I also agree if you go with the cappy put a rom on it quick. The cappy is very easy to mod and return to stock if needed. I turned mine into a cappy touch for the kids to play on.
My experiance with the atrix, great battery life, I go all day music, calls, text, wifi and 4g internet, rss feeds, email, facebook, gaming for maybe an hour a day and at the end I still average about 30%-40% battery left. For me that is the game changer. Plus there are not many phones out there with dual core, and 1GB of memory.
atrix, of course this is the atrix subforum..so you should expect more bias here. though i see no real reason to choose a single core over a dual core this late in the year.
people talk about future proofing like it's insurance against buyer's remorse. in a way that's true, but vague. in a specific way think about what you're using the smart phone for. most people would want to utilize the phone to the fullest, or at least play the latest games. you plan on getting the latest apps then having the latest phone is usually a must as most developers will develop their games for high end phones.

That's quite a feat considering the phone was released 5 months ago.
I've never used a Atrix, but the price on the Atrix dropped more and faster than the Captivate ... I think that implies something.
Why do you have to choose between those two? Two superior phones are around the corner: Galaxy S II and Thrill. That's the tough choice I am facing. Both dual core, 1GB slow RAM or 512 MB RAM that's twice as fast plus a 3D screen.

As fast as the SGS II: single channel. Thrill has dual channel, and the highest quadrant score on ant stock phone. SGS II with have dual 1.2GHz cores.
The captivates GPU is better than atrix, so gamers choose captivate.
Ask the same question in the captivate forum for a bunch of people that had both and chose captivate. The audience is important.
IMO, The captivate us more future proof, as long as the Nexus S (another option to consider now) is the dev phone. Once Ice Cream Sandwich releases, the Captivate will have it long before the Atrix.

Um, more future proof? Sorry, but how do you figure that?
Also, long before the Atrix? We have an unlocked bootloader now, so I don't see how that's a valid argument.

Um, I think I explained it.
Not fully future proof, but more than the Atrix.
I was running gingerbread on my captivate when the Atrix dropped. In the world of Android releases 5 months is indeed a long time.
Unlocked bootloader is no help without a dev following to use it. So many early adopters in the dev community skipped the Atrix and have already moved on. ReadesignGears just to name one.
Someone else already noted if you are looking for ROMs and dev improvement get the captivate, so I even other Atrix users see that point.
My overall point was to wait for the better hardware. But if you want more Atrix vs Captivate stories check the posts in the Captivate forum about 4 months ago, as the 30 day return window was closing on early adopters.

Well, silly boy, Designgears is back He's developing a ROM for us too. And you can't compare you guys getting Gingerbread to us.
Times have changed, and it seems like you haven't kept up with the news. We even have a CM7 alpha. Which we're getting a lot quicker than the Captivate did.
Granted, the locked bootloader was a problem. But no longer.
Also, the person that talked about the dev improvements, was me. A device like the cappy shouldn't need dev improvements to be usable after it powers up.

I own a Captivate, a Nexus S, and an Atrix. I can tell you right now the Atrix blows them away--I have tried them side by side.
If you want the same TouchWiz ROM with a different theme, horrible GPS, and a 3 hour battery if you actually use your phone for games, get a Captivate.
If you want a good phone with decent battery life, a high resolution screen, and a perfect GPS, with OFFICIAL Gingerbread, get an Atrix.

That's awesome that DG is back, you guys are in for a treat.
Back to my original question: why are those two "old" phones your only choice? If its a matter of cost, wait a month and get a brand new phone: Attain or Thrill, they won't be much more. If you are locking yourself into a two year (possibly 12 months if your bill us enough each month) I would say don't choose either at this point. If you have this choice because a friend just upgraded and they have those two phones sitting around, then try both. Make your own mind up, don't listen to me, or anyone else here. YOU will be the one stuck with the phone for the next while.

They are not here now, but lately att has been giving 2 weeks or less from announcement and availability. RadioShack will be selling both phones in August. Thrill was pushed back like 2 weeks, still August.
The only reason to buy either of these phones now is if you could get them off contract.

im trying to see if I should wait for the Galaxy S2, GX2, or htc Sensation too.
Sensation and Galaxy S2 both have more Ram the the LG, but the LG is out now...
All 3 use are different duel core processor.
I definitely dont think you should go for the mytouch 4 with the LG out now and others on the way.
trying to decide which of the 3 duel core phones to go for myself.
if you are looking for a phone now, its the LG hands down. If you are willing to wait, then you are in the same boat as me. not sure between the LG, HTC, or Sammy
Ya, the htc is supposed to be out in June or July. But my son's mytouch slide is having issues. So I'm considering upgrading and giving him my phone.

Switch from the vibrant I'm on the g2x nd lovin it by far the fastest phone I have ever owned. I've owned a lot I'm a phone whore... I'm still going to get the galaxy s 2 when it comes out phones are like pokemon gotta catch em all

If you can wait ............wait for the S2 the hardware is something to wait for. Over the next 10-15 months all the phones will go through a huge change. All the new phones hardware will have the capacity to run windows 7 (not that they will) but think about it ....the phone I have now has the same power as my windows 2000 computer 7 years ago............ amazing time.........
The vibrant has too much going for it to pay for an upgrade now. Especially in my mind the uncertainty of the AT&T takeover, or as i call it, when we all get screwed.
The g2x is amazing. I want one. But I also know my phone is dang good and only better phones are going to roll out... More GHz and more dual cores.
The next phone with a perfect 4"screen, 1.3+ GHz dual core on a good/cheap network may change my opinion... In the future.
S2 for sure. There is nothing to discuss, and nothing to think about. That is just the way to do it. Period.
S2 has a answered my prayers. I have been waiting for a freakin 4.3 SAMOLED phone to come out. Sammy only had the 4" galaxy S - Vibrant last year with talks of "dual core."
I'm glad that they didn't rush it either- because that would have been a huge liability waiting to happen.
Instead, they listened to our gripes.
1. 32gb memory- on bigger model
2. FFC - badass
3. FLASH!!!!
4. 8mp camera
5. 4.3" Capacitive Touch
6. Super Amoled!!!!!!!!
7. Gorilla glass?
8. External SD support up to 32gb
9. 4g !!!!!
10. GingerBread official.
11. Mod edit: to much info mate...keep it to yourself.
Seriously, it blows anything out of the water that is out there and will be out there in the near future.
Plus, Tmobile is getting is.
I'm going to buy 10 of these just in case zombies attack, then I'll just sit back and relax.
Anyway, /shameless Plug.
you get the picture.
GL with your decision.
A better way to go about this is, do you plan on rooting your new phone and installing custom ROMs? If you you do intend to do that, then i think Samsung has proven they could careless about you or the dev community so long as you buy there product.
We all know HTC shares there source code and there is a herd of diehard HTC fans who will mod the crap out of the Sensation.
I just picked up the G2x yesterday after i seen that LG has already released source code for not only the OS but kernel source code as well, and with cyanogen himself doing the CM7 port to the G2x, it will and should be community supported greatly as well
A thing that sold me on the G2x is that it supports AT&T 3G bands, so if its still my main phone if the merger goes down, it'll be a fully compatible device and i wont need to buy a new one to take advantage of AT&Ts extended coverage
So in the end it really just boils down to:
How long can you wait?
Do you intend to mod your phone?
Galaxy S2 hands down.
It will have a lot of ROMS for it since it has an unlocked Bootloader just like the Vibrant. The HTC Sensation does NOT. It also has lots of memory internal, and a 4.3 Super Amoled PLUS. Everything else you can compare to the HTC Sensation of G2X as all 3 have relatively similar "rest of the phone".
I'm on a g2x lets hope that the galaxy 2 does not have the normal sammy problems like on the vibrant I have a bitter taste for them now

as you can see from the second post in this thread, I too am trying to decide between gx2, gs2, sensation...
i see tons of people saying the samsung gs2 will be the best thing ever. So yes, Sammy does have awesome hardware (look at our vibrants). But, will it be cheap plastic? and who cares how great the hardware is if the Software sucks balls? (like our vibrants). Yes, our developers are awesome, but they are having to run circles around Sammy's terrible software writing...
I am not saying this is the case with the gs2, as im thinking about it too, just wondering these things...?
Thank you guys so much for your responses. It was exactly what I was looking for, different opinions. I needed to get a phone because two of the phones on my plan were injured. My son chose the "sidekick" not a bad phone, but I tried to talk him out of it. But whatever, it was cheaper.(good for me). I chose the G2x. And I gotta say, WOW! And for those wondering, the screen is just as good. Colors even seem a bit deeper. Quadrants (whatever) but 2200 out the box. The 4g is way better than my 3g. You tube on HD without a stutter. Couldnt pull that off before.
1080 vid recording (I was told) not tested yet.
Fast fast fast processor.
FFC (untested yet)
8mp camera with flash.
Feels much more solid and better made than Vibrant.
Stock against stock. Hands down its better. Guess I will have to wait on dev community for customization results. Maybe I will try to figure out how and root it tonight to remove some bloat.
I will miss my Vibrant (but my sis in law will be happy).
Oh! And I heard today the merge with ATT may not happen. Yay!

you switched back just because of the battery life?.. personally i HATE samsungs phones, but the nexus S was a nice looking device, never used it but yeah. sgs2 looks nice as well, idk if id trade though.
I've been waiting for the SGS2 but I will probably add it as a second line and use it as my daily driver and then turn my Atrix into more of a PMP and Hotspot.
I'm also looking to see if they do end up releasing a SGS2 variant with the keyboard that's been leaked:

The Atrix is perfect for me because of WebTop. I use it for work when I go to client's businesses, a lot more efficient that carrying a laptop. When (if?) the prime comes to AT&T, I'll use that for personal use, and switch SIMs for when I need the Atrix.

I thought about the same thing OP. Realistically the top phones out right now are the iPhone 4, Atrix, Galaxy S2, and Optimus 2x. And...the next wave of super phones that are coming out will be around October. This will include a bunch of devices that Samsung and Motorola, among others will release to compete with the iPhone 5.
My advice is keep your Atrix and make the switch once the next big transition to dual core phones happens because you'll be wasting money and it's pointless to switch for such little improvement.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
ill stay with my atrix, im patiently awaiting cm7 to come out of beta and have everything work cm7 hauls ass compared to any rom right now for atrix becuase its 100% blur free
Not worth it imo. You get a bigger screen with less res, worse battery, slightly better processor (but seriously Tegra2 is more than good enough esp overclocked), superthin if thats your cup of tea.
As others have said, wait till the next generation comes out Q4. Atrix to SGS2 is incremental at best. As I hate the SGS2 form factor and really love qHD resolution of atrix, it would be going backwards IMO. The only thing about the atrix that lets me down is the little bugs with VOIP/SIP stack and bluetooth as well (e.g. if you're using BT headphones for music, notification sounds keep coming out of phone not BT).
Now if you're not game to root and flash custom ROM then the balance tilts a fair bit, stock SW wise the SGS2 is noticeably faster than the stock atrix IMO.
^ only reason this is true is because sgs2 is stock clocked at 1.2ghz, but has terrible battery life. I am oc'd at 1.3ghz with better than stock atrix battery life
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

I plan on getting one. Even though it's already a few months old, I feel like it's one of the most "future proof" of current phones on the market right now.
Things like Exynos CPU/GPU, 1 GB ram, NFC, effectively maximum speed HSPA+... My Captivate runs quite comfortable at 1.3 GHz w/ Cyanogenmod and still beats the pants off of any stock Android device currently available in the States. That's 2+ versions of Android ahead of what it launched with (2.1 Eclair), and a 30% overclock of what the stock chip came with. By similar logic, the GS2 should last through Ice Cream Sandwich and beyond...
The Note looks awesome but if I wait for it then something better will be right around the corner, besides, been sitting on this upgrade since July

But I'll be picking up the AT&T SGSII when it comes out. Can always sell it later when something much better is released.
I will be getting it on or close as possible to Oct. 2nd I have waited this long and learned my lesson. I WON'T be waiting for the next best phone from attention after this one, I will fork out the cash for an unbranded phone. Maybe the prime or SGS3 IN the near future

I know there have been hints dropped about it launching as both cdma and gsm but there is no concrete evidence. So just going by history it will likely be a few months before at&t sees the prime.

are you guys planning on getting the ATT S2 come october 2nd even though the nexus prime is supposedly close? or is the S2 just not worth it at this point? no bashing (im actually contemplating on buying one myself).

Nexus Prime/iPhone 5 for me atm... but theres still a 10% chance that seeing the Att Attain in person could wow me into buying it but I highly doubt it. Don't like Att/Samsung giving Americans the middle finger by taking 6 months to bring it to the U.S.

Have you actually seen the specs? The note is going to be the best phone in the world bar none. What realistic specs could another phone have that would make the Galaxy Note look mediocre? I can't think of any realistic ones...

Smaller screens and lack of a stylus.
All personal preference though.

You suck!
LoL gotta admit had me laughing hard though
It's either buy this on release date or wait for the Nexus Prime or HTC Holiday/Raider 4G for me. I've been phoneless since March so I'm not sure that I want to wait much longer for such a trivial upgrade (SGSII -> Prime/Holiday).
What do you guys think?
Is there any trick or loopholes in att contract that we can exploit to get an early upgrade? Or is there any way like may be paying something around 100$ to get an early upgrade?

Because it has potential, higher resolution is a big thing which is the only thing missing from sgs2.
Also 5.3 sounds big, but you never know it may be the sweet spot between a phone and tablet. It is definitely going to replace both my phone and tablet.
And then there is the stylus which is kind of cool to have and might come handy in lots of places.
The only thing which is disappointing is the software. I would have liked to see ICS, but they are shipping with ginger bread.

or where have you gone?
I just got mine yesterday. Its awesome.
Got mine.. love it but it feels like a freaking tablet compared to the Eris

My 4 reason for getting a Rezound over the Nexus.
1. Better screen
2. Better camera
3. Build Quality (Nexus feels like a toy compared to the Rezound to me)
4. I actually like Sense.
I got my SGN on the 15th. It is soooo much better than the Eris. Of course it is also 2 years newer.
I really love ICS, it is quite a step up from Gingerbread. After using it the manufacturers are going to have to step up their game to compete. I see no reason to use an after market launcher with ICS.
Droid 3. I had a Bionic first, but had many problems with data with it. It's a common problem with all of the LTE phones at the moment, so I decided to get the best 3G phone that I could get (plus I wanted a world phone), so it was between the D3, the DInc2, and the iPhone 4S.
Love my new Galaxy Nexus!
Too many superlatives to list...now I've got an HTC, two Motorolas, and a Samsung device .
What will I get next year, LOL?
Cheers!
I moved to a fascinate bit had problems now I have a incredible 2 .my wife just became an i-tard so I am playing around with her x2.

Got my Galaxy Nexus on launch day, Dec 15th, 3 days before my birthday.
Love, love, love it. Couldn't be happier. Little quirks here and there that could use fixing and a few things I miss from custom ROMs/launchers, but overall absolutely the best phone I have ever had.
Still keeping my Eris around as a music player/alarm clock though. Can't part with it!
Thinking about getting it, but I'm on the fence based on the various reviews.
By the time my thinking is done the next great phone will be announced and then what?
I went with the Galaxy Nexus. Huge step up for me from the Eris. I like how some of the above posters felt the need to justify their purchase over the Galaxy. Thats fine. Fact is they are all pretty great phones when your stepping up from something like an Eris. I loved my Eris but that hardware was seriously tired.
ICS was the main reason why I splurged. I hated to spend the money but ...Ice Cream Sandwich. Thats all I got to say about that.

Then you pick up the Gnex for cheap and be happy with nice specd phone. Now a days its too hard keeping up with phones.

Exactly. Trying to keep up with these new phones is like trying to keep up with video games or computers. As soon as you buy the top model, within a month there's a new hotness. I figure by the time my upgrade is available at the end of March there will be another 5-6 new Verizon phones, and so maybe the Nexus, Razr or Rezound upgrade prices will have dropped more by then.

Right. That said, though, there will not be another Nexus device until the next version of Android (whatever "J" will be.) Here's hoping that Verizon continues to sell them in the future.
I upgraded to Rezound, love this phone!
Just looking for any ex infuse owners that went to the sgs2 to give me they're opinions.

My experience with the Infuse in web browsers was very sluggish and choppy as well as home screens that use live wallpapers. I don't do much gaming on my android so can't say how that is. It's been some time so I'm not sure if this is accurate, but the battery life didn't seem nearly as good as my GS2 running Unnamed or SHOstock.
Edit: As I no longer have the phone (returned it within a month and went back to my 3gs to hold off until I got this) I cannot say if it still performs like this. I did root, flash, etc, so it wasn't just a stock experience.

Is your sgs2 oc or UV at all. What battery do u get. I'm 1.2 with custom rom and some uving and I get almost 2 days battery on good days otherwise a day easy.

I'm running SHOstock with Entropy's 12/08 DD, stock battery, not sure about the clocks but I believe they're stock as well. Normally access to a charger is readily available, so I don't bother conserving it as much as some others do (I leave my screen on for 20 minutes before I notice it and turn it off). Because of this, I generally get a day and a half out of it on average.
I can easily go 2 days without a charge if need be, I'd just turn the screen timeout back on to around 2 minutes or so. A while back before tweaking I barely squeezed 2d8h out of it, but now I'd be comfortable going 3 days if I really had to.
Edit: I also keep my bluetooth on, GPS on, and wifi off, data connection stays on and I generally get 2 to 3 bars out here. I have two Google accounts syncing everything except for Picasa. I also use Llama that does cell tower polling (among other things) to automatically change profiles (primarily for volume changes).
There are lots of ex-Infuse owners here. In fact, quite a few developers here are ex-Infuse.
gtg465x was on the Infuse and came here, MikeyMike01 came here for a while but then sold off all of his newer devices and went with an old Focus, I'm here.
From a developer's point of view, the GSII blows the Infuse out of the water. From a users' point of view, the difference isn't as obvious, other than that we have proper Gingerbread and the Infuse is still stuck with half-baked derivatives of the Rogers release. (AT&T leaks have improved things somewhat - but still stuff like MHL support is missing.)
Oh yeah - GPS on the GSII is a MASSIVE improvement compared to Infuse.
Given a choice between Infuse and GS2 both with contract subsidy - GS2 is a no-brainer. If it's a question of upgrading by paying full off-contract price - not so sure if it's worth it at this point. Better to wait for something else (International GS3 maybe?) or get a GNex.

Thx entropy I know alot of u ex infuse devs are over here now. Alot to think about. My infuse has good bat life. GPS locks kinda slow but is fine for me when connected. And speed wise my single core is just as snappy as dual I would bet. But that's just my opinion as a user and I value your input as a dev.
Thanks

Had the infuse for two Weeks. Made a ROM and wasn't happy with performance of device... Also had Atrix. Lg thrill 3d. brought infuse back and spent the extra 100 got gs2. Gs2 is better than all my phones for developing and use.

Screen was bigger however quality is better on the SGS2. SGS2 is way faster, GPS is also a lot better (locks faster).
Camera I think is also better.
There is no question SGS2 is THE PHONE

Only difference is sgs2 cam does 1080p who hoo and they are identical screens no difference in quality? And I have a dslr for pics so camera on a phone doesn't mean anything really. For still or video. Its a phone.

For me, even if not for the improvements in development and ability to leverage the I9100 community for development - the GPS was a MAJOR factor in deciding to keep the device and ditch the Infuse. (I was on the fence and was considering returning it after a month since it was such an expenditure.)
The Infuse GPS was OK, but not good enough for me to trust it - I would NEVER have relied on it for navigation in any tough environment such as a city or even an area with good signal but densely packed roads. The I777's GPS is good enough to replace all of my standalone GPS units except for the ones I use while hiking. (In fact, my parents now have my old trusty "Dealextreme Pirate Special" GPS.)

Nice write up. Decided for the sgs2 for my gf. Trading her iPhone 4(finally got her on the android wagon) . Kinda sad her first android is on paper a Beter phone than mine but I know my infuse will still hold it's own. I just wanted her to have something that's gonna have more value in the end like her iPhone which retains value. Unlike the infuse which value is only going down fast!
Thanks guys

I have 2 of each, and besides the video playback being slightly smoother on the sgs2 I can't tell the difference. The infuse has CM7 as does the sgs2 which are both still KANGed. Maybe I can give a good comparison when they join the nightly...
