I know that the max size that the 3D and most mobile products on the market right now can accept is 32GB but how hard would it be to change something around to make it accept a larger size. I remember back when I had the Titan or Touch Pro there was a program or script that you could run to let the phone see the new 16GB MicroSD cards when they came out.
That be interesting to be done. But How much does a 64GB one cost lol?

That seems very likely as it appears to only be a difference in filesystem (exFAT) as the physical interface/standard is identical.

I don't know. They haven't released it to the public yet. Soon I hope. Probably gonna be about $200 that's what the first 32GB ones cost and a Class 10 costs about $100 now.

I hope so cause I need one for the 3D and one for my tablet. These 3D ROMS are huge!
Yeah, its sdxc. I doubt that is even going to function in anything for a while.

we can use the card if we can use exFAT.
SDHC (SD 2.0 standard) has a size limitation of 2.0TB, thus artificially limited....blah blah blah SD 3.0..... and now we are at SD4.0 whose standard calls for much higher transfer rates as well. If this card does not have the (much) higher transfer rates then it is a "SD 3.5" (not an actual standard) stop-gap measure...a hack.
So, yes, our phones either can or will support SDXC cards as high as 2TB, as file systems allow.
edit: I was wrong about classification, it is certainly standard SD 3.0
I still got 21gb left with music I need and all the apps, so I'm good with 32gb, i probably be down 15gb with roms and stuff but i don't see the need for it (myself)
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d
The good thing about this is it should drive down the cost if the 32gb cards as these 64gb's hit the market. Probably not right away, but over time the prices will start dropping.

SD2.0 (aka SDHC) I believe. But that is the upper limit of the standard. Keep in mind that these cards still operate as standard block devices at the hardware level. So SD3.0 is pretty much the same as SD2.0 except at larger capacities aka SDXC. There is nothing separating SD2.0 and SD3.0 cards except size which is artificially restricted based on file system...thanks to Microsoft.
SD4.0 is where we get SSD like speeds. EDIT: and those will not work in our devices...maybe at lower speeds, but not 100mbit/s

As I'm a newbie, I can't post external links.... but apparently CAN post links where "http" have been changed to "hxxp". I spotted this link earlier today, from Morgan Computers - a BIG hardware-clearance company in New Oxford Street, London. £51 for a 32Gig SDHC card.
" The 32GB SDHC memory card is German made, leading edge technology at its best! It also comes with a lifetime manufacturer warranty.
The 32GB SD Card offers high storage capacity with a write speed of 10MBytes/s and a read speed of 20MBytes/s. It is ideal for new generation digital camera and other applications with SDHC cards slots.
Compatible with All SDHC devices
32GB stores approx 1200 x 10MP Photos, 545 Hours of MP3
May be in Eco Friendly Bulk Packaging
*Please Note: SDHC cards will only work in devices that are compatible with the Higher SDHC Specification cards"
I'm going to invest in one of these for my (new!) Desire - my two G-1's will have to continue to make-do with 8 Gig Sandisk TF cards.

I have two 32GB SDHC's, one is class 2, the other class 6.
The class 2 works but it's insanely slow and it consumes a lot of battery due to the extra hot time required for reads and writes.
The class 6 is extremely fast and doesn't cause noticeable battery drain.
So am I correct in assuming that the higher the class number, the faster the performance & lower the power usage?

Meh. Until there's a PAE firmware released for the device. Like how a 32bit OS can only handle 4GB RAM until you enable PAE. (In windows, you can simply "turn it on", in linux you need a kernel with a PAE module enabled)
PAE, or Physical Address Extension, should allow for a 52 bit limit on physical memory but only supports a 48-bit virtual address space. 4 × 10245 bytes, or 4 Petabytes and 256 × 10244 bytes or 256 Terabytes, respectively. (What that means is, if the hardware doesn't support 52 bit addresses natively, then they highest capacity that can be reached via PAE is 256 Terabytes through virtualization.)
What does that mean for an android device? A PAE Kernel Module could be created to allow for addressing of more than 32 Gigabytes, how far past 32 Gigabytes? That I don't know. I would assume at least somewhere in the realm of 128-256 Gigabytes. I doubt there will ever be a MicroSD card at that capacity though. By the time we see affordable solid-state storage as small as MicroSD with a capacity over 64 Gigabytes it is unlikely that MicroSD will even still be around, and I doubt anyone will still be using the G1 anyway at that point. We're talking another 4 years or so, making the G1 an antique by technology standards.
tl;dr version: Once 64GB cards are affordable enough for it to be practical to put the time and effort into a firmware mod (kernel module, etc) for an android version of something resembling PAE, you can expect -someone- will figure out a way to enable 64GB usage in the G1.
I think we're gonna see faces like this: all the time, when it comes to electronics industry... I can still remember my first Intel 486 with a few MB HDD!
Man one of these would be nice!
For me 6gb is enough..
For music etc i have a mp3 player!
Here we are 2 years later, 256gb micro sd cards are just starting to appear on evilbay.
Also USB thumbdrives that can handle up to 512gb cards

Although 99.999999999999999% of the MicroSD Cards which are 32GB are Class 2, I noted that the 16GB which Verizon stocked in the Rezound is a Class 4. I suspect that means we should go no lower than Class 4.
Anyone know of a good and legitimate 32GB SD card which is Class 4 or even better? I note that Class 6 and Class 10 all tend to be brands I have never heard of (other than 1 by PNY).
Recommendations are appreciated.
Sandisk has a class 4 32gb micro on Amazon for $37. I just ordered mine, and it should be here in a few days. I'll let you know what I think of it when it gets here.
Anything faster?
Anyone successfully use a Class 6 or 10 that was NOT a fake and actually worked close to speed?

Yeah, the only real difference is the transfer time. If you're swapping a lot of data on a daily basis (like copies of your BluRay movies), then a higher class rating makes it go faster, but doesn't have any other effect on the performance of the phone, to my knowledge.

JD, there's a thread elsewhere on xda that talks about card speeds and basically recommends that the sweet spot is a 32g class 4 card. I have 3 of 'em (all bought at various sales just under $40). One is in my Rezound; one is in my tablet, and one is kept synced to the one in my phone via Microsoft Synctoy....because all cards ultimately fail.
i was reading somehwere that this may affect the speed of how videos write to the card if you save to card..is that true?
i'm gonna get a 32 gig as well, but should i go for class 4 or 6?

That's a valid concern. I don't know the bitrate at which the camera records the various formats that it is capable of, but I'd say that a Class 4 is a safe bet in any case.
For a smartphone doing HD recording you want "atleast" a 4. Anything slower might get stuck in swapping. Personally I think it's one of those things with go with what you can afford/feel comfortable with. Though I'm also using a class 10 16GB since I can't stand being bogged down on transfers. I mean honestly, it's an LTE phone, not an HD camera. I don't need a 32gb, I stream everything.
Play back is a different story, a class 2 32gb works fine as long as the app does proper buffering. Though it will always load faster with a faster SD card.

Guys don't ever get sandisk ultra 64gb. I had 3 of their cards which was purchased at the same time and unfortunately it failed. The issue is rampant on their 64gb ultra (google Sandisk ultra cannot delete files). My micro sd suddenly became a read only device. Files are intact but i cant modify contents which means i cannot do format erase and anything. Practically it became a useless card. Already did windows low level format, tried to check drive permissions and it was not set in read only, no virus. The writting controller chip just broke down. for those who are planning to buy a card and have their cameras and their 4K vids automatically save in the sd card, then don't buy sandisk (at least The 64gb ultra). It seems their cards can't take much writing before it breaks

Actually i tried everything including that one. I even tried Easeus, Linux and all. Not really a noob when it comes to these things. Seems Sandisk is not really a durable card. I used the card for storing stuff (torrent goes directly to it, 4k video, and all). so i guess it's really time that sony steps up the game when it comes to storage and should give a higher option for users. Maybe 16, 32gb and 64gb (128gb would also be nice) options should be available internationally while still keeping the sdcard for backup purposes. I'm sure people won't mind paying the extra costs for these upgrade options.

I have the 64GB Sandisk Exteme Plus. I believe they are MLC vs. the Ultra's TLC you have. MLC lasts longer or better than TLC or so I heard. I'll see if this thing will fail on my phone.
Samsung is a good alternative as almost every phone including the Z3, iPhone etc use Samsung NAND flash for their internal memory. They released their 128GB MicroSD on the 7th and their PRO series is cheaper and performs better than Sandisk's ExtremePlus.
The Samsung EVO series is their lower end equivalent to the Sandisk Ultra, but still better.
As for your issue I have not heard it before now....... SanDisk makes pretty reliable NAND Flash itself.

They are all NAND. The Phone uses MLC for internal meaning 2 bits per cell with about 2000-3000 writes per cell. TLC is 3 bits per cell which is even worse and slower. More bits per cell means more voltage states for 0/1, leading to lower room for compensation as it wears down leading to failure earlier like 500-1000 writes per cell. Also its slower. Remember when a file is written to the flash and then deleted, even if part of the file is on a partially filled cell, entire cell has to be erased. If there was part of another file on it it has to be moved before it erases. Now imagine that on TLC its much worse.
The PRO series is MLC same as Sandisk Extreme
the EVO is TLC same as SanDisk Ultra
Phone's internal MLC flash is faster because its not only higher grade but faster interconnects as its soldered on.
As for SLC (50,000+ Writes per cell for 20nm) its too expensive and I don't think there are even many SSDs that use it anymore.............. Well basically SLC is in a way "formmatted" for the lack of a better word, as MLC/TLC during production to increase data density at the cost of life of the flash.
Also the smaller the NAND gets the lower the life. The old 50nm NAND MLC has ~10,000 write cycles, 30nm ~5,000 and the current gen which is 20nm is ~3,000.
If you wonder, why make it smaller? Its because the smaller the die the more NAND per wafer, so bigger profits
SLC 100% Space (baseline) (~50,000+ write cycles per cell) (Fastest)
MLC 200% as its 2 bits per cell (~3,000 write cycles per cell) (Good) (Best cost to benefit ratio)
TLC 300% as its 3 bits per cell (~750 write cycles per cell) (Slowest)
.
Article about NAND Flash types and how they work:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5067/understanding-tlc-nand
I see. Yeah just read it now tlc is the cheaper and slower one between the 3 types. I think our internal memory uses slc and pro and extreme cards use mlc.

Sent from my D6633 using XDA Free mobile app
Its reliable enough I doubt you would see it die before you switch phones. For example 32 GB Intel SLC SSD costs over $200 while a 512GB MLC SSD costs the same price. At an extreme 20GB scenario of writes per day it will be about a decade of life out of an average 256GB MLC SSD before it fails. So think of the cost to benefit ratio.
My Laptop's Crucial 256GB SSD is rated for 65TB writes so if you extrapolate that to a 32GB in the TMO Z3 you have to write about 8TB of data to wear it out or 10-11GB per day for 2 years which I doubt will ever happen.
FYI an average computer user writes 5-10GB per day, so it will be lower for phones.
Samsung's current gen 3D V NAND MLC/TLC has double the life of regular ssds, I don't think our phone has that though.
If want something interesting, some SSD makers reserve a part of the MLC flash left as SLC for caching.

Very true indeed. Also Micron (aka Crucial) and Intel jointly produce NAND and I believe Kingston and Toshiba also jointly produce.
Samsung is the largest producer overall though for RAM and NAND (<- Best SSDs but expensive), after that I think its Micron (Crucial) (<- Their SSDs are the best bang for the buck with great performance.)
As for SanDisk I am pretty sure they set the standards for SD/MicroSD cards (shape/size etc) they are pretty reliable like the rest of the producers.
OP are you sure you did not get a fake SanDisk?
I remember when I was in India I ordered SanDisk cards for 2 of my friends and me on eBay. I got a 2GB card made to seem as a 16GB and my friends got plastic tabs cut out to look like MicroSD with gold paint for contacts.
Got a refund though. Sandisk and others always say to be careful on eBay, even on Amazon or Newegg buy directly from them, and not the resellers who sell via Amazon/Newegg. You will know because if its a reseller both Newegg/Amazon mention on the side near the price.
Now that's i am doubtful. I tested it with the software HWtest is the name i guess and it passed. I ran it a couple of times and it passed the 64 gb test. And the price was just right when i purchased it. I had no problems filling that up before with a lot of torrent downloads from my phone. Guess it simply just "decided to give up".

Today i received a 64gb Samsung pro micro sd cats i had purchased from amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KRDHRMO/ref=twister_B00K19DH6E?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 however upon benchmarking it with A1 SD bench app i noticed i got lower numbers than i did with my 64gb evo card which was around half the price and advertised with lower speeds.
I consistently got around 38mb read and 20-21mb write on the evo however with the pro i am getting around 34mb read and 20-21mb write. I have seen others on here get 70+mb read and around 60mb write with the same micro sd benchmarked with the same app.
Anyone got any idea of what's going on?
Need some advice guys, i need to know what's up with the micro sd before i call Amazon and accuse them of sending me a fake or faulty card
I don't know what is going on with your micro SD card. All I can offer you is my story. I bought a Samsung 64 GB Pro microSD from Wal-Mart and it was DOA. Returned it and bought one from Best Buy which worked 100%.
I know sometimes there's just a defective item, but here's what I noticed about the differences in packaging:
1. With the item I bought from Best Buy, the main graphic at the top of the package was in a brilliant blue color. The main image on the Wal-Mart item was greyscale.
2. The blurb on the front of the package stating how fast the read/write speeds on the Wal-Mart package was twice as large as the font on the item I bought from Best Buy.
I don't know if Samsung uses different packaging to differentiate selling through different stores/channels or if Wal-Mart got a batch of counterfeit product. I don't know if this story applies to your situation or not, but I need to buy a new card for a new tablet showing up in a few days & for sure I won't be buying it at Wal-Mart.

Have you ran a benchmark on your phone/tablet using the a1 sd app? It would be interesting to know what you're getting as i can't seem to get higher than 34-35mb read and 21mb write despite it being advertised as 90mb read and 80mb write, i know I'm unlikely to ever reach those numbers but i was expecting more than what I'm currently getting.

I ran the A1 SD app on both my Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 and my Galaxy S5 which both have Samsung Pro SD cards and didn't achieve much higher benchmarks than you did. This is because of the limitations of the SD controller chip in nearly all phones and tablets. These devices don't need those kinds of speeds that are the upper end of these Pro cards. You'll need something like a high-end DSLR camera if you wish to take full advantage of these cards.
I saw some of the posted results on the community page for A1 and a lot of those high results look suspect. I only bought the Pro cards myself because they weren't much more than the Evo ones and I may use them in a high speed device someday. My main attraction to Samsung SD cards was that they are water-proof, X-Ray-proof, and magnetic-proof.
Bottom line, I don't think there's anything wrong with the Pro card you bought, but you didn't gain any speed benefits upgrading from your Evo card due to hardware limitations of your device(s).

Well that sucks, i mainly purchased it for my tablet and will most likely never use it in anything else (other than maybe a phone) but the pro cost me twice the price of the evo.
Is it possible that the benchmark results we are getting with the a1 app are false? I ask because if they are accurate then the cheaper evo card is actually faster, 10 out of 10 times the evo consistently gave me higher results which doesn't really make sense even if the phone/tablet was limiting it, surely it should have been at least the same speed?
If the app and the pro card i received isn't to blame then i think people should know the evo performs better on their phones and tablets.

I'm looking for either a 128gb or 256gb micro sd card and I want to have the same experience as using the internal storage for recording 4k/superslowmo and using apps on sd cards.
But I don't want to overspend either, I don't know up to what speeds/classes the phone can utilize.
There's cards like Samsung evo plus 128gb for 60euro, cards like lexar 1000x 128gb at 95 euro with UHS II Bus all kinds of things I got lost in the sea of classes and speeds.
What cards did you guys get and can anyone recommend me something?
I use sandisk ultra 200 gb and no problem @all with 4k
I got a samsung evo select 128gb and it is pretty damn snappy.

I use that also.. I think... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CO48M36/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Up to 95MB/s Read and 90MB/s Write speed with Class 10 and U3 compatibility
that was the fastest card available when I bought it, nothing was faster with high storage. I see 256gb cards now but haven't really looked into any or the specs
I got Samsung Evo+ 128 GB UHS-I U3 (100 MB/s read, 90 MB/s write) for 55 euros (just google MB-MC128GA/EU - NL Samsung site for this card) . There is also 128 GB Adata Premier One UHS-II with read 275 MB/s, write 155 MB/s for ~150 USD. 256 GB version is for 289 USD (amazon) - dunno why, but in Czech it is for ~210$ ^^. In your case, I would go for Samsung
Got the Samsung one now

I'd recommend the SanDisk Ultra 200 GB MicroSDXC UHS-I Memory Card as a good balance between capability, capacity and cost.

Sony 128GB UHS-I Class 10 SDXC
I purchased Sony 128GB UHS-I Class 10 SDXC Memory Card (SR-G1UY3A). Performance is simply awesome. It cost me Rs 5k.
I'm disappointed with XZP's sdcard access speeds, especially when the sdcard encryption is enabled. With my Samsung Evo+ 256Gb I got the following speeds:
About 7Mb/s read/write (with enabled encryption)
And about 70/40Mb/s (read/write) with disabled encryption.
What real speeds have you got?
100MB/s & 90MB/s read & write speeds Evo Select 45 USD http://a.co/3sYajyC

Is this still a problem? I prefer to always have my stuff encrypted and had this same issue, so slow it's almost unusable. Wondering if any of the updates or anything have fixed this issue or not.

Yes, it's still a problem in Oreo. I have up to 10mb/s with enabled encryption.

Have you tried any other micro SDs or just the Samsung Evo+? I was thinking about getting the 2017 one, Samsung Evo Plus 256GB, but it seems like it will probably be the same, I think the only difference between that 2016 version is 10MB/s on Read speed. Would be interesting to see if certain cards do better than others, I would like to know if a A1 rated card also has this problem.
Hey guys. Thanks for all the helpful input. What would you say is the primary benefit of the additional storage of a 128GB to 256GB SD Card? I feel like on other phones without expandable memory, I never really reach capacity on 64GB models. So I probably used more cloud storage out of necessity and just got used to it. What are you guys using all this glorious storage for?

4k por... Oops I mean scientific ebooks etc.
All jokes aside... Having that bit of extra storage can give you the freedom to record, capture and download as you please!
Especially for people like me who hardly use online storage. I have the Samsung Evo Plus 256gb (2017 version) and I have so many 4k HDR10 movies and documentaries stored on it. I also dont have to worry about running out of space by constantly shooting 4k videos.
Having higher storage takes away all the limitations of having to transfer your files whenever you need to download new material.
I'm getting 72mb/read and 40mb/write even though the Micro SD card is capable of achieving higher speeds. This is due to the phone and I hope that android will find a way around this with upcoming updates, unless it's a hardware issue of course.
These speeds are more than enough for regular everyday use as I haven't faced any issues with reading/writing colossal files.
Hope this helps

You had me at 4k por... LOL. But seriously, I have never even seen 4K video let alone shot in 4K, so I am looking forward to checking it out on this glorious screen. Still think I may only opt for 200GB unless I find a really good deal (I will check the model you listed above). Doubt I will be able to even fill that but who knows. LOL. Thanks again.

Just to verify, you don't have encryption enabled for the microSD card correct?

Hey guys. Can someone please give me their thoughts on the MicroSD card linked below? Thinking of buying but not sure I need 256GB and the price is pretty reasonable on this 200GB. Thoughts?
