Sorry for the noob question but I'm on Kenneth's Alien Rom and am having issues with it that no one seems to be able to help me with... So I wanna try one of the other roms instead. So my question is do I have to do anything special or do I just wipe Cache and data before installing the other rom? Also any suggestions for a different rom would be great, thanks.
Instructions should be in threads for other ROM's, but rule of thumb is full battery, wipe Dalvik, cache, and factory reset/data before flashing a new ROM.

How are you doing your wipes? Just want to make sure you're either doing it via fastboot or tenfars CWM and not Rom Manager

Well, I unlocked the bootloader with mramirezusa's automatic bootloader unlock and it had what I thought was Tenfar's CWM but now that I look at it I think it's actually rom manager, lol. Any guide on how to use fastboot?
If i weren't in my backyard on my phone I'd link it, but there's a flashable .zip to install Tenfar's CWM. It's here somewhere.

I just started using Cherry Pi last night, and so far, I'm digging it. I too used mramirezusa's automatic bootloader unlock/root on my stock 2.3.4. Worked perfect.
I haven't really tried any other roms, but with how much I'm liking Cherry Pi, unless something really mindblowing comes out, I will stick with it.

Hey All,
Ok so I have a problem and please excuse the dumb questions as I am new to Motorola (I came from the EVO).My device is rooted and bootstrap recovery installed and I created a backup of my normal setup. I tried to install the Alien ROM (I am not unlocked) and I did a wipe ect. the ROM will boot but I can't get past the touch here Android icon and I get a bunch of force closes.
I turned the phone off, put the wall charger in and I can not get back into recovery by holding the power and volume down to install my nandroid. My phone is stuck.....I can see fastboot but I don't know how to get back into my recovery.
Please help!!!!
Now that I think of it, my backup was on internal and the wipe might have erased the backup and bootstrap.....what the heck do I do now?

It probably didn't erase your backup. You can always use rsdlite and flash cm5.

Thanks MAX, I am so used to the EVO and flashing a rom and theme in the same recovery I didnt think twice about it....Lesson learned.
So I need to use RSD Lite and flash CM5. Then root again, install bootstrap, backup current rom. Then flash Alien, reboot, then flash theme and I should be ok?
Thanks for all of the help everyone, I got it resolved and fixed
What is the use of flashing clockworkmode??
cant we just root the device=>flash cm7???
and after I flash cm7 can I do a recovery??

I think you don't understand what a "Custom recovery" actually means...
And by the way, LGDRM, KDZ Updater and fastboot can update firmware without an installed recovery

You need a custom recovery to flash roms such as cm7. It is also used to make a backup of your phone and wipe the data on your phone. How is it that you've flash cm7 (which means that you've also used your recovery before) yet you don't know the purpose of having a recovery? I think you're going way to ahead of yourself.
Sent from my LG-P509 using xda premium
I'm guessing it's more of a case of he's flashed cm7, using the recovery to do so, but doesn't understand the behind-the-scenes procedures that go into the actual flashing.
you need to read the sticky thread if you dont know basics
Think of custom recovery as the basic setup/installer tool for anything and everything related to custom ROMs, kernels, etc. .
kdz and lgdrm are only for stock(OEM)/official releases.
The reason you need it, because it's the only way to do it and carrier's don't give you access to change your ROM. Does Microsoft put mod chips/software in xbox 360? No, hell no, they only give you limited access and regulate what content can be yours.
Custom recoveries come with features that you normally can't do, like nand(full phone backup) backup.
It's this way because that's how it has to be done.

Just because your phone is "rooted" dosent mean you can install a rom like a app, you need to use clockwork mod, why do you need it? you need it because it allows you to perform actions that you couldn't do on a stock phone. With clockwork mod you can back up your system files, restore system files, install new roms for use or testing. If your phone is just "rooted" all it means is you can now access system files, use certain "root required" apps, being rooted is step #1 to installing clockwork mod, its like your phone is unlocked, if you just want your phone rooted to delete some system apps thats fine, but it is wise to flash clockwork mod because it can prevent your phone from being bricked and now you can install roms. so the answer is pretty simple, how else would you install a rom without clockwordmod? you couldnt so its just one of those things you need, hope this helps man
reply
apart from all this custom roms come packed as zip files n kdz updater or lgdrm doesnt recognize these files so u need to hace custom recoveries like cmw or twrp or amonra

I don't think that you could do that... since the phone doesn't even come with CM7 in the first place. Doing a factory reset / restore wouldnt bring the phone to stock CM7. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't it bring the phone back to FroYo since that's what it came with?
CM7 is already a custom ROM so there is nothing stock about it... Stock means whatever the phone came with from the box (FroYo) CM7 is Gingerbread.

If your running cm7 or any rom you can do a factory/reset through the rom your using, it will just erase all info but wont delete the rom and it will delete apps so when you reboot you will have to set up Google account like a new phone, cm7 will still be installed and your current rom it will just be like new, to do a factory reset go to settings, security then hit factory reset, reboot and then back to a clean start on cm7 there will be a option to erase everything on the SD card, hit no if you want to keep all files on your SD or hit yes if you want it all gone, goodluck p.s the only way you can go back to stock is to flash a stock rom and if you made a backup of your stock rom before you flashed cm7

Use 4EXT, it won't boot without the kernel, which CWM can't flash, since I'm pretty sure you don't have s-off, am I right or am I right?
You can always flash the kernel manually if you prefer to stick to cwm.

Once you can access hboot/fastboot the tool will work fine.

Nope, you don't need s-off to do so, it just makes it easier, you can use 4EXT, if for some reason 4EXT can't flash it, then you can use Hasoon's tool or go all the way by getting down and dirty with adb to flash it manually.

NP and anything not stock based is buggy due to not being able to have full access of the drivers.
Hey guys. So I have been flashing Rom's on just about every android phone I have owned since the Moto Droid 1 came out. I never have had any real issues. I am by no means an expert but I do have a meager comprehension of how this all works. But for some reason when my friend brought his Moto Atrix 4g over to have me unlock it and root it for him, I got it unlocked and rooted successfully but once I completed those tasks I set about getting him a custom rom. I attempted to flash CM10, CM7 and a few other roms. Atleast 4 others. None of them seem to want to flash. His phone is now stuck on the Dual Core boot menu. When I go into recovery from CWM and select restore it just clears the screen of all text and nothing happens. Yes when I flash the rom I wipe cache/dalvik cache/ and factory reset. I have no idea what is going on or how to fix it at this point and any help would be appreciated. I am currently trying to find a stock image rom but the only one I found on these forums is outdated and there is no mirror in the link. So PLEASE PLEASE help me. Idk what to do.
Thanks guys!!!!

Oh wait did you mean like a different recovery under the CWM? There are no other Recoveries. The only option I get when I go to back/recovery is to either backup or recover so I select recover and then nothing happens from that point.
How did you flash CWM on it in the first place? It's the same procedure, you know... Or you could read the related recovery thread. Some people like romracer's others like TWRP. They're available in the dev section.

Oh ok my bad. I understand what you are saying. I wasn't sure if TWRP and romracer were compatible with this phone. I didn't know how that worked but if I can just try and flash a different recovery I'll do that. Ill try TWRP tonight that's what I have on my EVO 4g LTE and I flashed CM10 just fine on it so. Hopefully that will help. Thanks a ton man!
Well, if it's in this phone's dev section, it better be compatible with this phone, eh? Just don't try to use another phone's recovery. That could brick it.
I use TWRP recovery. There is a thread for that in the dev thread. Someone there made it flashable. You'll just have to search for it. Put it on the sd card, go into recovery and flash it. Reboot into recovery and there yea go. I prefer TWRP because it's different and easy to use. Good luck!!

I have tried clearing everything but still doesn't seem to work.
One thing I forgot to mention is sometimes if I wait long enough on the blank screen It boots me back into the 4ext recovery, don't know if that makes much of a difference.
The way I have been installing the rom
Load ROM onto the SD
Do a "wipe data/factory reset"
Go into install sd and choose the Rom which is in a .zip file
I think this is how its supposed to be done, but not sure.

The All In One Tool alone will not get you rooted after taking the OTA.
In order to fully root and s-off after having the OTA loaded, you would need to follow the steps outlined HERE
