Power button in lockscreen - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not sure if this is normal or just something I've messed around with. My phone keeps shutting down in my pocket because the power button is fully functional even while the phone is locked, so long pressing it turns my phone off.
I've had the phone for months but the issue came up just recently. I have WidgetLocker enabled and
Im not sure if this hass something to do with me using the "Disable Stockholms Lock Screen" option. I've already tried disabling Easy Wake and disabling WidgetLocker but nothing seems to help.
Is this normal or have I done something stupid with my device? And if it's just me being an idiot can anyone tell me how to fix this?
Im using Cognition 1.31 and the newest WidgetLocker

Sounds normal.
If the power button is pressed for ~10seconds, or something like that, the phone powers off, no matter what the opinion of the running OS about the matter is (i.e. the OS can't prevent it).
It's a hardware trigger, kind of an "emergency off" for situations where a clean shutdown isn't possible for whatever reason.
So you better see that nothing pushes on that power button while the phone is in your pocket.

Alright thank you. It is necessary to have a way to shut the phone down with an actual button but it would be better if it was two or three buttons that have to be pressed at the same time. I just can't figure out why I haven't had my phone shutting down before. Maybe the power button has loosened so it needs less force to be pushed

power button broke so i reassigned it ;)

Tried to turn on my XDA yesteday and the button fell into the device ! This caused not to be able to turn on the screen unless I got a call. I downloaded Vito SystemTools' button maping program which allowed me to make my calendar button (when held down) to turn the screen on and off. The problem is that turning the screen on and off is not doing the same thing as the power button did. I was under the impression that all the power button did was turn the screen on and off to save battery and prevent unintended input. However, now my battery dies in 6-8 hours of use compared to the normal 2 days. Obviously, there is somthing more that the power button does.
What I'd like to know from the developers is if there is a program called by the power button and how I should access it. The button mapper program allows me to map any program I want to (almost) any hardware button (not the volume button). If it's a DLL or somthin I can probably write a wrapper program for it with some pointers.
I'm also in the market for a dummy xda or just another power button if someone has one just to get it to look better. However I like the functionality of holding down the calendar button for 1 second to turn the device on/off and would like to keep that permanently.

The power button is probably hard-wired to some processor wake-up logic. So when you turn the processor off, it's going to be very hard to make it wake up by anything else. You could write something that makes it wake up very very momentarily, say every few seconds, to check for a button-press. But my guess is what you want is a new power button.
damn Well i'm waiting on a dummy phone auction unless anyone over here has one to sell me.
I got exactly the same problem, the only difference is that i managed to get it back and i putted some silicone glue in it. It works and don't ask me how ;-)
Anyway, why don't you just press on the call - hang-up , calendar, volume button to wake the phone up?
Than just change the settings in battery power to make it shut down after 5min or 10min. It should help you reduce your battery life time since the phone gets automaticly in sleep mode after that time.
good luck,
Yann
I have my phone set not to wake up without the power button being pressed. I can turn this off but then buttons get pressed in my pocket since I don't like belt clip holders.

phone not waking up

Hi guys,
I am having this weird issue with my i9100, sometimes i can't wake my phone up! Only way is to remove the battery and put it back in
I have a feeling this may be a common issue, but I just didn't know what key words i had to use to search for this specific issue. I hope it is software, and not hardware.
I currently have the old lite'ning rom installed.
this person described my situation perfectly:
"Twice I have left my phone and then when i press the power button in the side to wake the screen in it wont turn on. I first thought it had ran out of power as no matter how many times i press the power button nothing happened. But if you press the volume button you can hear the phone beep as it gets louder so it is one. The only way i can get the screen to work is to take the battery out and put it back in again?"
helpp ( when the phone goes on sleep, it ignores everything even calls
Heya, seems like a ROM/kernel issue to me (perhaps even undervolting one). Try installing the newest version od your ROM, or Kernel and make sure you have no undervolting active. Hope it helped ya.

[Q] Menu button started acting like Home button -- any fix?

My HTC Hero was working fine without incident for quite some time. I did not introduce any software changes to it. But suddenly, for no apparently good reason, I'm seeing two things happening now:
Menu button pressed acts like Home button, no matter what screen you are on (this is terrible, as in some screens the menu button is required to access certain options)
Search button acts like the green call button, bringing up the recent call list and the dial menu.
Volume button decrease goes nowhere. Actually, one click bumps the volume up then down one notch. The increase button is fine. One must click and hold the decrease button to get the volume to go down.
I'm not all that bothered by the volume button, but the menu button is critical.
I searched the Internet extensively and found one other person mention this simultaneous fault of the volume button and menu button. But unfortunately, they weren't able to get a resolution, or they simply never came back to the thread to update.
I did a full shutdown and restart, but no change. The only environmental change has been an increase in humidity. I am by the shore for the weekend. I took my phone kayaking, but it was sealed in a plastic bag and never got wet. But perhaps moisture in the air has something to do with it? It does seem more like a hardware issue than software problem.
Has anyone run into this problem and been able to rectify it?
I discovered another peculiar behavior.
When the phone was idle for some time, I awoke it with the END button, then a screen swipe to get to the main screen. Pressing "Menu" brought up the proper sub menu toolbar. However, going back and pressing it again showed the wrong behavior again (acting like the HOME button).
Then for a stretch of time, if you tapped the menu button lightly and quickly, the sub menu toolbar would appear. A standard button push will cause it to act like the HOME button. But unfortunately, this did not last. I set the phone down, came back later, and this "light tap" would only act like the HOME button.
I did NOT see any erratic behavior prior to this, like the MENU button mostly working fine and only occasionally acting like the HOME button. It was a rather sudden change. Given the behavior, I'm starting to wonder if something has built up inside under the button bezel that is doing this. Perhaps taking it apart and giving it a good cleaning would resolve it?
I've been finding that every once in a while the MENU button function momentarily goes back to normal operation. It's usually after having left the phone untouched for a few hours. But it works just once or twice, then starts behaving like the HOME button. From this behavior, I can't figure out if this is hardware or software related.
Anyway... I don't see anybody having offered a solution for this, either here or on other forums. I guess I'll just have to retire this phone.
I'm really baffled by this very strange behavior.
My Hero is still experiencing this problem most of the time, but sometimes the menu button will work properly. When it does, I can click the button again in the exact same way, and it will stop working right. Other times, I can dismiss the pop-up menu, then click the menu again and it works maybe 2-3 times. Then after that, it's back to the "HOME" button behavior. Once it does it again, I cannot coax it to work properly again, no matter how many different variations I try. I have to wait for a long while before trying again and finding that it works properly again. If it was a hardware problem, the behavior should be pretty random. Given how it behaves, I have to believe this is software. Now... how the software (firmware) could become corrupt like this is beyond me. I'm thinking that maybe restoring the phone back to the original ROM and then rooting it all over again could get things back to normal... anyone reading this agree or disagree?
Try ButtonRemapper: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9399440&postcount=1
If needed, KeynrTracker.apk will allow you to identify the code for individual buttons.

Click to collapse
Thanks for the suggestion. But somehow, miraculously, the problem resolved on its own. I guess it must be a hardware issue, as I didn't make any software changes. I can press the menu button repeatedly and it works normally now. Really weird. I guess that perhaps there was some debris or residue buildup inside that eventually worked itself out.

How to force a reboot when the screen (sort of) freezes?

I'm new to the V10 -- my old beloved Note 4 was quickly unravelling so I traded it in for this phone. Other than the loss of the stylus, I quite like it. The second screen is neat. The fingerprint scanner works much better than the Note 4's ever did. All in all I'm fine with it.
(Haven't rooted it yet. Eventually.)
I have run into an issue that's a little confounding, though. Occasionally -- about once a week since the last OTA update -- the screen will "sort of" freeze. By "sort of" I mean the phone is obviously still running (I can turn the display on and off) but I'm unable to navigate by touch. The UI elements don't respond, I can't swipe away windows, I can't access notifications...
...my Note 4 used to do this occasionally, and what I'd have to do is long-press the power button for 8-10 seconds, which would force it to turn off, then turn it back on, and life would go on. The V10 doesn't do that -- when I long-press the power button for 8-10 seconds, I get that stupid V10 voice control program (I call it stupid because it hilariously misinterprets my voice commands - my daughter and I basically turn it on whenever we want to be amused by a big dumb phone). In short, there seems to be no way to force the phone to shut down through hardware other than pulling the battery... which is what I wind up doing, but it's weird that there's no way to force a shutdown with the power button.
Is there a way to change this in the settings anywhere? Or would I need to root the phone and load a custom rom for that?
Thanks for any help you can provide...
Try long pressing the power button and the volume down at the same time...that works for me
I can remove and put the battery back in faster than i can long press to reboot.
Also a factory reset after an ota is recommended. It might fix the freezing problem.

Power Button locks and then wakes up phone with one press

Hey guys, so basically when I am locking my phone with the power button it locks and the phone will then wake up like .5s after the screen turns off and is locked. I start with my phone unlocked and it does everything correct except it wakes the screen after it is locked. I am running stock standard MIUI Global, no root or anything special. I have tested this to no end to make sure I am not double tapping the button and I am not holding it down or anything. Any thoughts as to what it might be?
What version MIUI global rom you're using it..?, is it official or mod/ custom version..?
You can try flashing latest global fastboot rom..with MiFlash Tool (Clean All method)..then see if that issue still apear..
This does happen to me too once in a while. Same as you, stock, MIUI 8.0.5.0. i suspect that "Wake with volume keys" option does this. You have this option ON?
mine does this. The power button seems to be a bit loose. Press it a bit harder and see what happens.
This is hardware problem, it happened to me too. You probably (like i did) at some point pressed and held power button really hard. I fixed it by opening phone and realigning power button contact plate. Fortunately, i did not break it so it was quick & easy fix.
Just open your phone, disconnect battery and buttons flex cable, remove tape from power button and realign plate a little to one side. I noticed that my power button did not react if i pressed it at bottom side (i heard mechanical click but screen did not turn on/off), at middle (normal press) and at top it reacted but most times it was like as if i pressed it twice really fast so screen turned on/off fast. So thats why i pushed plate a little to bottom where button did not react, now it works perfectly no matter how i push button - just like it did on first day when i bought this phone.
