What do I need to know to not hard brick my X2? - Motorola Droid X2

Can anyone tell me what I would have to do (so I can avoid doing it) to brick my phone? I'm clueless about what I'm actually doing when following the instructions, so knowing in advance what NOT to do would help out quite a bit. Perhaps someone could recommend a guide for beginners on this stuff to help me understand these processes a little more. Thank you.

The best advice I can give you is read over all the comments and watch and tutorial videos if you can.... I'm never the first to jump I always watch and wait to see what everyone else says before doing anything .... the one major thing I can tell you is don't unplug or interfere with your phone when sbfing that will brick it ..... by the way WWW.k33pw1shen.WordPress.com is my blog with how to stuff on it .... its still under construction but there is some helpful stuff on it

Read as many threads as you can, over and over if necessary. Then slowly, start doing stuff, re read if you need to you'll you fully understand a process. Happily it's actually really hard to hard brick, but not impossible. You'd have to really mess up.

Learn to SBF before doing anything...If you know how to do that it is virtually impossible to hard brick.
I get shocked when people mess with Moto before SBF'n at least once

So it seems that sbf is equivalent to ODIN recovery on other phones?

[Q] Steps to becoming a Rom Developer

I have no experience, but i'd like to learn how to make my own custom rom.
Does anyone know what i'd need for a Thunderbolt GB rom?
I've looked into it and read about Kitchens and how you need them, but don't fully understand.
I'd like to know if the community could help me out here.
I could google it and I have, but I don't get any results that are specifically for the Thunderbolt.
Please go easy on me. :/
I can't answer your question so I apologize for taking a spot in your thread but I don't see any reason people would be rude/harsh towards you especially considering you posted in the proper section! Good luck and hope to see a ROM from you someday!

the phone model does not matter really and you wont find anything specific for the thunderbolt.
Install Linux right off the bat... Dealing with Windows and using environments are a PIA.
Download apktool, kitchen, gimp, and your base ROM whether it be the GB leak or MR2. Read up on how the system works, various editing techniques, and suck up all the info possible. It really is a learning process, not really something someone can tell you how to do.
That's what I did/do to learn.

You do realize too that some people, no matter how hard they may try, are just not cut out to this type of stuff?
I'm not saying you can't do this, but just be aware that the end result may not be what you want it to be.

Ya, I remember back in my days in school when these people were in computer classes with me saying how cool it was to learn to program.
Half of them, while very bright, lacked a certain "ability" to grasp programming, shall we say.

[Q] New and I need some help

Ok, So pretty much what I have here is the Droid x2 and I want to root it, BUT, I don't know how and I don't want to screw my phone up, so I'm looking for someone to explain in detail step by step how to do it because then I can do it on my own from there, any help would be great, i'm just looking for a textbook definition and a simple step by step process on how to do this without bricking my phone, again any help with be great thanks.
I think you may find this thread useful, if not have a good look around the Droid Incredible forums as this thread came from there.
I was just looking for someone who could explain how to root and the whole process kinda from scratch because there are hundreds of threads to look through and that's just asking for eye sores.. I'm just looking for someone who can explain how to get the files I need and the whole process in a simple 1,2,3 step manner...
Read the sticky in the dev forum, there's different ways depending on what android version you have.

go there.
It says one click root for droid3 but it is same for all moto devices running gingerbread.
just be sure u are on Android version 2.3.3 or 2.3.4
U can verify ur android version by going to settings >about phone> android version
if u are on 2.2.2 then press the button on top of about phone that says system updates and follow instructions to update ur phone to gingerbread(2.3.x)
Good luck and make sure to follow ALL directions EXACTLY (feel free to pm me if u need help)
Thanks a lot, I'll take a look at it.
Ok, so I used the one click root and it worked... now im wondering, now that its rooted, What can i do with it, say change the button lay out and other stuff like that the theme, and so on
You can run ROMs on your phone now using boot strap recovery. I use Eclipse but there are other great ROMs available as well. Just make sure you understand what version of android each ROM works with.
Here is a thread to help you understand our recovery.

Do u mean the hardkey layout? I haven't seen a mod for that yet but it may be possible.
U can also now remove/freeze the bloat u don't use if u want((u know...those pesky apps that keep running even after u kill em. Taking up ram and just getting on ur nerves cuz u can't kill it. Like blockbuster, kindle, etc...)) there is a list in the forum of which are safe to freeze/remove.
Just be sure to read before u try. Then read again. Then some more. Then when u feel u r comfortable with what the mod does to ur phone, make sure u follow all directions EXACTLY and have fun and enjoy the different available mods, scripts, hacks, and of course Roms. U will be addicted in no time to flashing roms and making nandroid backups.
O yeah. Best thing u could EVER do right now is MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP using system recovery app from the link above. Trust me. U will be happy u did it when u end up needing one as we all have at one point.
I also recommend posting any question u have in this thread or a thread that pertains to ur question as starting a new thread wit a question that's been asked a hundred times wont get a good reaction

O well...
I find that "noobs' are more or less "afraid" that they will brick and are just looking for info and guidance on how NOT to do that.
But that's the great thing about these types of forums. If u don't wanna help then don't. There is no need to be mean. Im not saying that u or booked were outright mean but if u can see that the OP has already been pointed in the direction and/or is receive help them why post telling him to do everything himself when he obviously doesn't have to. I was a noon my self at one point and yeah I did a TON of reading and rereading but some things don't set in until its said specifically and I have asked my fair share of "noob" questions also. Everyone has to start somewhere.
I don't even know where im going with this other than just be respectful and be nice lol
I creeped these forums (and all others) for a good 6 months before I even laid my first post. I googled everything, and READ! And you know what? I learned a fair amount.
The last month has been horrible. You see the same question/scenario in almost every subforum on here. The problem is, Android exploded as well as "modding" and became popular, and now everybody is tinkering.
I've only been involved with android for a year and a half, but when I got in it was almost a 'niche' cult type of thing. It was kind of uncool because it wasn't an iPhone. I loved it, I actually miss it. I remember showing my friends what a DROID 1 was capable of with a custom overclocked kernel.

Like the majority of us, we were excited when we got out SIII's however all the information you need is contained with the SIII walls on this particular corner of XDA. What people are suggesting is you take a look for yourself first and have a read of all things before asking such a question as the answer is but a quick look around.
So, instead of spoon feeding, go for a wander and have a look. You will be amazed at all the info there.

As Mr Tuff said......we at XDA are here to serve you and all your smartphone needs. please put your phone into download mode open Odin and click repartition and add any random .Tar file ( jellybean will be in there somewhere, have faith ) then click start.
now once you do this you will need to send your phone off to a repair shop where they will activate your newely installed JB build on your phone.
then just wait.........
Hope this helps......................................Probably will not though, lol

Ya, I agree with this.
Op, just enjoy your phone for now the way it is, the JB leaks are not for people with little experience in these matters.
Hang around xda for a while and learn how things work here, learn why making these threads is frowned upon, read through the JB threads, learn from them.
Then, when you feel comfortable enough to flash it on your own, you are ready to give it a go.

Noobs

I thought I'd do essential topic for Noobs out there, okay well in here or outside if you're outside.
So these are the essential things you must do after getting your shiny new scratch free powerhouse mobile.
1. Root your mobile
This is essential if you want to learn what your phone can do and believe me it can do loads, I've still not learned everything and already I'm amazed.
2. Download the xda toolkit, I have no link but do a search here. It's like a step by step to rooting and the other things I'll mention.
3. Install directory bind as it will enable you to move some of your apps to your sd micro card if you have bought one and buy one if you haven't it will help.
4. Learn about roms and kernels and visit the developers forum as these are great for modifying your mobile the way you want it, I'm turning mine into a mini entertainment system. It would be great if could modify the other things like the s voice to programme it to say what you wanted it to every time you wanted to do a task and add a sexy woman's voice too.
5. Once you have modified it the way you want and made it your very special friend (okay I'm exaggerating) do a nandroid backup as it will back up the way you have your device and it's quite simple to do.
This is to make sure that if at some point you have to do a factory reset and believe me you will as I had to do one today when this annoying message kept popping up to say something about a Google gapps isn't working so I just gave up and did a full wipe, it doesn't save game sd data but if you've already learned how to use directory bind you won't worry about that.
Oh and install the xda app as it's much easier to to type than using a browser and easier to find your way around this site.
6. Do a search about the things I've talked about as there are step by steps to help you along the way.
I'm sure I've forgotten some things but these are things I've found are essential.
That's all I've learned really so I've run out of numbers.
I'm off now to learn some new things.
Farewell my fellow Noobs.
OP your telling people how YOU like to use your device. All of what you listed is only essential if that's what you want to do. And if you do want to do it, there's guides walking you through all the steps. No need to tell "noobs" what they should be doing. I know users on here that stay stock non-rooted..
OP, I applaud your intent but I am with Coreym on this one.
Any advice to noobs that starts with '1. Root your mobile' is staggeringly misguided and borderline reckless. There are increasing numbers of noobs on this site for whom 'walk in a straight line' would be a challenge.
If you really want to help noobs perhaps your advice would be better rephrased as follows:
Do nothing for now
Read
Keep reading
Read some more
When you think you understand re-read everything to ensure you do understand
Do the thing

Well I was the one who sent her the wrong file. And she doesn't really know a lot about stuff thats gping on here in xda.
Then honestly...you should not have sent it. Irresponsible flashing causes expensive paperweights and bad blood. Do it yourself...or don't do it. There should not have just been "a file to send". No one is going to help with this, as YOU screwed up, and her for trusting...YOU.
P.S. looking for info by carrier is far from confusing...if that confused you or her, should stay stock Sammy!!!!

Can't add anything to this that hasn't already been said. If you provided the service of modifying someone's device without verifying things first, most people aren't going to make it easy for you, especially with the information needed to restore the phone back to stock being readily available.
Also, you don't modify anyone's phone unless you're willing to take the time to figure out how to fix it. I never modify anyone's phone myself. I'll provide details on how to do so, or where to find more info, but that is up to the phone owner to actually make the changes themselves.
