I thought I'd do essential topic for Noobs out there, okay well in here or outside if you're outside.
So these are the essential things you must do after getting your shiny new scratch free powerhouse mobile.
1. Root your mobile
This is essential if you want to learn what your phone can do and believe me it can do loads, I've still not learned everything and already I'm amazed.
2. Download the xda toolkit, I have no link but do a search here. It's like a step by step to rooting and the other things I'll mention.
3. Install directory bind as it will enable you to move some of your apps to your sd micro card if you have bought one and buy one if you haven't it will help.
4. Learn about roms and kernels and visit the developers forum as these are great for modifying your mobile the way you want it, I'm turning mine into a mini entertainment system. It would be great if could modify the other things like the s voice to programme it to say what you wanted it to every time you wanted to do a task and add a sexy woman's voice too.
5. Once you have modified it the way you want and made it your very special friend (okay I'm exaggerating) do a nandroid backup as it will back up the way you have your device and it's quite simple to do.
This is to make sure that if at some point you have to do a factory reset and believe me you will as I had to do one today when this annoying message kept popping up to say something about a Google gapps isn't working so I just gave up and did a full wipe, it doesn't save game sd data but if you've already learned how to use directory bind you won't worry about that.
Oh and install the xda app as it's much easier to to type than using a browser and easier to find your way around this site.
6. Do a search about the things I've talked about as there are step by steps to help you along the way.
I'm sure I've forgotten some things but these are things I've found are essential.
That's all I've learned really so I've run out of numbers.
I'm off now to learn some new things.
Farewell my fellow Noobs.
OP your telling people how YOU like to use your device. All of what you listed is only essential if that's what you want to do. And if you do want to do it, there's guides walking you through all the steps. No need to tell "noobs" what they should be doing. I know users on here that stay stock non-rooted..
OP, I applaud your intent but I am with Coreym on this one.
Any advice to noobs that starts with '1. Root your mobile' is staggeringly misguided and borderline reckless. There are increasing numbers of noobs on this site for whom 'walk in a straight line' would be a challenge.
If you really want to help noobs perhaps your advice would be better rephrased as follows:
Do nothing for now
Read
Keep reading
Read some more
When you think you understand re-read everything to ensure you do understand
Do the thing

Samsungnooby,
Thanks for your well intentioned post.
The posters above you Coreym & Gustopher are right, maybe edit your post with Gustopher suggestions would be sounder advice.
I've had my phone 3 weeks, on the second day I leaned how to root it and I've learned and done everything else.
Found it all pretty straight forward to learn it all and do them, maybe I'm just a quick learner.
Don't know what else there is to learn.
Maybe I'll just take a look around for something else.

Like the majority of us, we were excited when we got out SIII's however all the information you need is contained with the SIII walls on this particular corner of XDA. What people are suggesting is you take a look for yourself first and have a read of all things before asking such a question as the answer is but a quick look around.
So, instead of spoon feeding, go for a wander and have a look. You will be amazed at all the info there.

At this time i say many ways to root for many devices and one think can destroy phone. I thought xda forum which i see first time can help choosing correct way, files to install jellybean on my phone bcs its not att, tmobile or other provider.
Well. thx for no help.

As Mr Tuff said......we at XDA are here to serve you and all your smartphone needs. please put your phone into download mode open Odin and click repartition and add any random .Tar file ( jellybean will be in there somewhere, have faith ) then click start.
now once you do this you will need to send your phone off to a repair shop where they will activate your newely installed JB build on your phone.
then just wait.........
Hope this helps......................................Probably will not though, lol

If you can't follow those excellent HOWTOs & FAQs you surely DON'T want to flash your phone. If you have a specific question, ask in the thread about flashing and installing. This here won't help you a bit.

Ya, I agree with this.
Op, just enjoy your phone for now the way it is, the JB leaks are not for people with little experience in these matters.
Hang around xda for a while and learn how things work here, learn why making these threads is frowned upon, read through the JB threads, learn from them.
Then, when you feel comfortable enough to flash it on your own, you are ready to give it a go.

On another note, let's NOT start personally attacking people, report, ignore DO NOT RESPOND.
I understand your frustration, do you know what poor sod has to close all these threads?
But thats not an excuse to flout the rules, and bash people, be calm, be cool, IGNORE and report!

How about a tutorial for complete beginners as regards rooting and flashing Roms? I mean from the ground up including an explanation of different terminology such as..... :- Insecure ROM.....that means there must be a secure ROM, what's the difference and why and when are they used?
Stock ROM....as opposed to what? and what are the advantages/disadvantages of using either?
Same with Kernels, there seem to be so many to choose from........why would I want to choose a paricular one over another?
I find that in the available tutorials, so much is already taken for granted...I for one don't fully understand most of the terms used, and I think that sometimes this makes the following of instructions more difficult because a question is raised in my mind that isn't answered so I'm a bit nervous about carrying on..I'm sure there are qute a few users out there who would like to get their hands dirty, but are reluctant to do so because they feel that even the so called tutorials for beginners are difficult to follow.
This by no means a criticism of these tutorials, which I'm sure are easy to follow by those with the required level of knowledge, but there are some of us who need a more explanatory text.
I am talking about the galaxy s2 gt 19100 in particular. The suggested post deals with an HTC phone, which, while being an android device, has its own peculiarities, making it different to deal with than the sgs2.
I know I could probably google all the answers to my questions, but, as I read somewhere, if we could google everything we needed, forums would be redundant.
So, how about it guys?
Go on xD !
After all there is nothing wrong in trying to help! There are already lots in here but most seem to be obsolete as people don't even answer doubts there ! So if you can write one up and maintain it then good !
Yep that's the key. If you're going to do it, you have to be prepared to keep it up to date/maintain it & be prepared to answer every single question that gets asked. Otherwise it just ends up getting lost/buried/out of date like all the others.
Feel free to do it yourself. There are too many models and roms etc to group things together.

I'm not sure what's happening here but it appears that the erstwhile student is now being asked to take on the mantle of tutor. A strange turn of events if ever there was one. How can I, a mere person asking for instruction, guidance and knowledge, assume a position at the front of the class, and teach those from whom I thought I would receive such wisdom?

That's a poor analogy.
What you're asking for is for someone to come up with a lesson plan that uses much simpler terms because you can't understand the one that already exists.
Classes in school have pre-requisites. You can't take Calculus right away. You have to take Algebra, then Geometry, etc., before you can move to Calculus.
What you're asking for is for someone to come up with a "Calculus for Dummies" guide because you're too lazy to go learn Algebra and Geometry first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826497
Those are pretty easy-to-follow guides, just read the guides again if you didn't understand them the first time

I take your point, although I wouldn't admit to being lazy per se, I just need shoving in the right direction. And yes, I realise I need to to start at the bottom first, and that's what I was asking for (bad english). I need a crash course in the basics, not a dummies guide in calculus.
Hi, okay so i have a non-rooted Note 2, and i've seen videos in which people has some apps (such as twitter, kakao talk, facebook, gmail.. etc) in their multi-window tab but i don't have them in my multi-window tab.
and also i want to know something about rooting:
Risks:
Why would i want to do it:
Do i lose my warranty doing it?
Thank you.
So I see you're new here... Prior to signing up for an account, XDA required that you watch a video about being a noob. It was well done, I recommend you watch it. If I remember correctly, one of the main points was that the people contributing to the site that make it what it is (awesome) spend a lot of time researching and sharing what they develop and find. It is in everyone's best interest for you to research your questions prior to wasting everyone's time asking the same questions that have already been answered. In your case, they have been.
But enough chastising and... Welcome!
IMO you should just assume you have to root your phone in the very least to apply a majority of the customizations here. That may not be the case all of the time, but it applies often enough. Xda University might have answers to your questions there, otherwise so some more searching on this site.
There are multiple options to your question about the multi Window. Here is one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028535. Note that you must be rooted.
Always assume that everything voids your warranty. I don't know if it is necessarily true with regards to rooting, but that's because you can remove the root. If you brick your phone, assume the warranty is void.
Final recommendation; stay logged on to XDA and subscribe to the Galaxy note 2 forum. After a day or so of cruising around you will have enough information to make your head explode. You will also appreciate the folks that contribute to the site, specifically by user name as you realize how much work they invest in helping the community.
Good luck!

No worries! There's a lot of support with rooting your phone. Although it's a bit scary at first, once you're done you'll feel a lot more comfortable monkeying around with it. After you root and have either Clockwork Mod Recovery, or TWRP recovery installed (part of the rooting process), back it up immediately before playing with any of the Mods. Part of the process usually involves getting into a boot loop. Doing this will save your blood pressure and lower anxiety levels.
I know I'm a little worried about rooting because I just bought my phone so I don't want anything to happen to it lol but yeah thanks for everything.

Probably the most drama i've ever been trough over a phone. Guess people take this too seriously. A new phone comes out every 5-6 months i doubt half of you will even have this phone for more than a year, and to be responding the way you are is just WOW. All this for a phone you wont remember in 2 years. Again you're free not to read my post. Clearly im new to this "XDA" thing and know the bare minimum (root, cwm, cm10), hence the questions. What you don't seem to understand is that no one minds questions, but asking a question, when there's a whole thread dedicated to the question (a thread that shows up 2-3 items down the forum thread list, from your) is absurd and does nothing but clutter these pages. Doing so makes people think that you are either too lazy to search for an answer or believe that your time is more important than ours, so we're supposed to provide the link for you or write the answer again. Why would you expect people to do either of those things?

We get that you're new to XDA. But given your age and generation, you should at least be somewhat familiar with technology (the fact that you are flashing ROMs and even on this website in the first place is proof of that) so we expect you to have a minimal understanding of forum etiquette. Like the guy above me said, the link to "How to use LGNPST on Windows 8" was just 2 threads away from the top when I posted the link to it in my reply.
Put yourself in our position. If EVERYONE decided to make a new thread every time they had a question that was answered 100s of times already instead of using the search feature or checking the stickies, just imagine how cluttered and unreadable this forum would be. We would be spending more time sifting through threads to find somewhat relevant ones. So basically you can see why we get a little uppity for threads like this.
Anyway, best of luck to you. Good job getting this phone. You're gonna love it! :good:
Since you're new you should have read the forum rules and watched the nice video XDA created that covers the basic forum etiquette like searching and not creating threads covering topics that have already been covered.
I think you need to go watch that video again, and stop breaking the rules. You're not making much of an impression with the members here so far, from what I can tell. To me you're coming across as both an asshat and not terribly bright. What you do from here on out is up to you, but I'd suggest a change in attitude would be a good start. Getting defensive and butthurt doesn't help your cause.
Start taking what we're saying as constructive criticism intended to help you conform to how things work here (even if it is delivered harshly). You'll find a lot of your questions have already been answered, and if not, people are willing to help if you ask the right questions the right way.

I don't know why some people insist on calling n00bs out for everything. They too were once a noob. Your question is fair- there are two things you can do:
1. Turn on GPS and try to navigate somewhere, then go into Settings/More Settings under Wireless and Network/Mobile Networks/ and change the Network mode to CDMA/LTE to Global or vice versa. See if that works.

2. Reflash back to Stock or whatever ROM you have had a GPS lock on and establish a lock. Then nandroid flash back to whatever ROM you want (i.e. JediROM). Try to navigate- most likely it will work.
I would advise though, hitting the Crtl F key... :highfive:

I don't know why some people insist on calling n00bs out for everything. They too were once a noob. Your question is fair- there are two things you can do:
1. Turn on GPS and try to navigate somewhere, then go into Settings/More Settings under Wireless and Network/Mobile Networks/ and change the Network mode to CDMA/LTE to Global or vice versa. See if that works.

I'm just trying to get him to understand there is a search function that works very well. Then next time he has a question, he won't just post it, he can solve his problem.

I hear ya, it just seems like the community is rejecting newcomers. . I know this isn't the truth (usually) and he should have searched first, I guess I was trying to give him the benefit of doubt

Really the way some noobs are treated they are turned away from the community. I have been guilty of *****ing out noobs before as have most of us. It gets very old to answer these questions every day when people could have used the search function to find the answer.
On the same hand the reason some of the noobs dont even come to XDA and screw up their phones by using roms and rooting methods is because of the attitude here at XDA and the way noobs get treated. Im not saying every noob gets treated badly but when the first post tells them to search without trying to answer the question that gives a initial impression of an assholish community.

And add the fact that there are millions of posts to sort through, you sort for one question and it pops back 30 threads. Lol

Very true, but you can choose to sort thru one sub forum at a time and that geta rid of the majority of the posts that dont apply to you. Of course most noobs are confused by the way XDA is set up, I was confused by it a bit when I joined but it was a bit more disorganized then than it is now.
The reason most of us get a little annoyed with noobs and repetitive posts is when there are 3 posts that are the same thing one right after another and there is an answer in one but they didnt bother to even look at the Q&A section before posting.
The worst part though is when there are posts in thr Development sections, when I joined there was no Q&A sub forums and I still had enough sense to not post in Development.
Those of us who do try to donate our time and answer questions for new members need to leave our attitudes at the door when we start helping them unless it is warranted, and there most definitely are times that attitude is warranted. They are there asking for help because they honestly dont know what to do or don't understand a process and they asked for help not attitudes for posting a question in the Help and Q&A Thread. Its really giving the sitenas a whole a bad name because of the attitudes that some members have towards noobs even when they follow all the rules and have legitimate questions. I hate saying that about XDA because I love the site so much but it's the honest truth.
