[Q] Tutorial for complete beginners - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How about a tutorial for complete beginners as regards rooting and flashing Roms? I mean from the ground up including an explanation of different terminology such as..... :- Insecure ROM.....that means there must be a secure ROM, what's the difference and why and when are they used?
Stock ROM....as opposed to what? and what are the advantages/disadvantages of using either?
Same with Kernels, there seem to be so many to choose from........why would I want to choose a paricular one over another?
I find that in the available tutorials, so much is already taken for granted...I for one don't fully understand most of the terms used, and I think that sometimes this makes the following of instructions more difficult because a question is raised in my mind that isn't answered so I'm a bit nervous about carrying on..I'm sure there are qute a few users out there who would like to get their hands dirty, but are reluctant to do so because they feel that even the so called tutorials for beginners are difficult to follow.
This by no means a criticism of these tutorials, which I'm sure are easy to follow by those with the required level of knowledge, but there are some of us who need a more explanatory text.
I am talking about the galaxy s2 gt 19100 in particular. The suggested post deals with an HTC phone, which, while being an android device, has its own peculiarities, making it different to deal with than the sgs2.
I know I could probably google all the answers to my questions, but, as I read somewhere, if we could google everything we needed, forums would be redundant.
So, how about it guys?

Go on xD !
After all there is nothing wrong in trying to help! There are already lots in here but most seem to be obsolete as people don't even answer doubts there ! So if you can write one up and maintain it then good !

Yep that's the key. If you're going to do it, you have to be prepared to keep it up to date/maintain it & be prepared to answer every single question that gets asked. Otherwise it just ends up getting lost/buried/out of date like all the others.

Feel free to do it yourself. There are too many models and roms etc to group things together.

I'm not sure what's happening here but it appears that the erstwhile student is now being asked to take on the mantle of tutor. A strange turn of events if ever there was one. How can I, a mere person asking for instruction, guidance and knowledge, assume a position at the front of the class, and teach those from whom I thought I would receive such wisdom?

................either that or your too lazy to do it yourself.

All the guides you're asking about are out there. If you have difficulty understanding a term or phrase, then look it up.
How did you get through any amount of school with this kind of an attitude?

I sat in class and listened and was taughtby my teachers!
I can't remember any of them telling me to go to the local library because everything I needed to learn was there if I could be bothered to go and look for it............which would have rendered them redundant!

That's a poor analogy.
What you're asking for is for someone to come up with a lesson plan that uses much simpler terms because you can't understand the one that already exists.
Classes in school have pre-requisites. You can't take Calculus right away. You have to take Algebra, then Geometry, etc., before you can move to Calculus.
What you're asking for is for someone to come up with a "Calculus for Dummies" guide because you're too lazy to go learn Algebra and Geometry first.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826497
Those are pretty easy-to-follow guides, just read the guides again if you didn't understand them the first time

I take your point, although I wouldn't admit to being lazy per se, I just need shoving in the right direction. And yes, I realise I need to to start at the bottom first, and that's what I was asking for (bad english). I need a crash course in the basics, not a dummies guide in calculus.

Why do people keep asking what the status is on the Touch Pro 2? Check the threads!

I am putting this up in favor of the devs. I am not a dev myself, but I certainly respect what they are doing! What I can't stand are the people who keep asking dumb questions, like: when will this be fully working? Or: What is the status of android on touch pro 2? Look at the threads! If you took the time to look, you would know that there is still work to be done. Again, thank you devs!

Pretty sure a guide like that should be stickied with the rest of those threads at the top... that would be veryy helpful. I would be very confused too coming into the android threads for the first time.

Maybe at the "download your files here" section, say that the users don't necesarily need to know how those files work and what exactly they do, just that they are needed parts for android to work. Just trying to think if I was a beginner and what might confuse or overwhelm me. Just a suggestion but it probably wouldn't make a difference. Other than that I just wonder who needs to be told in order to get this thing stickied. This is kind of the equivelant of the thread in the WinMo section on flashing ROMs for noobs.

[Q] Noob to XDA Dev. Looking to see if I understand this right regarding ICS ROMs.

Hey guys! I've lurked around here for a while. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II for ATT a few months ago after being a longtime iPhone user. Therefore, I'm fairly new to the whole Android tweaking process. I want to install an ICS ROM onto my phone, particularly CM9. I've read the stickies, and am really trying to understand, but at the same time, do not wish to brick my phone. So could someone tell me if this is correct? Or where I'm wrong? Based on what I've read here, to install ICS, I need to...
1. Root my phone as outlined in the thread for that. (The one about not activating the yellow triangle. Since I'm on 2.3.6, I'll need to use "Odin3 One-Click Downloader".)
2. Backup my apps and texts and crap using Titanium Backup to my SD card.
3. Install the proper kernel (where do I find this?) using Mobile Odin.
4. Make sure CWM is active, backup NAND (I assume this is an option?) and flash CM9.
5. Flash Google Apps.
6. Restore my Ti backup.
Thanks guys for the help! And sorry if I'm being stupid/completely misunderstanding.
Read, useless thread is useless

Read, read and read some more. Do a search for Hellraiser as there are no true ICS ROMs for this phone yet, only i900 ports.
If you need to ask questions like this, you are not ready for ICS and ICS is not ready for you.
Since I9100 kernel source code has only been out for a week and we had a bunch of I777-specific **** to fix - while lots of progress has been made things are not quite working yet.
man some people are rude in here....
And others are lazy. Welcome to XDA.
There are a lot of different roms. Usually they rewrite the kernel within the install of the rom. But basically you have the right idea...

Facts are facts, loser. There is not yet a fully-functioning official ICS ROM released for the i777, so any talk of one is premature. The guy admits in the title of this thread that he is a noob and doesn't quite understand. These are exactly the people who should not be flashing ANYTHING, let alone a ROM that is not ready for primetime. But keep on encouraging him and others so that the forum gets filled with people needing help to fix what they messed up. I'm sure you'll be rewarded with tons of adulation for your efforts. Troll indeed.

Thanks for the link.
I guess I made a bad attempt at trying to help. I just wanted to bring attention to the link attached in that thread. I could not access it.
I'll have never completely understood why it is that people on this forum have to act as though they are being put out by others posting questions. Yeah..yeah..yeah.. Search the forum... Read the post you idiot.. Don't post without reading...etc. etc.. etc...
Regardless of how stupid you may believe I am... It does not change that fact that the link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335703) attached to the thread:"FAQ for the HTC Amaze 4G. Read Frequently Asked Questions before you post a question! / Q - I want to revert back to the stock ROM of the Amaze. How do I do that?" does not work.
Instead of jacking with me because you think I am not capable of finding info... why not use that energy to fully read my post and help fix the problem. I was just trying to help others that search the forum. Sorry that bothers you.
I post in other forums and help/try-to-help others. I never talk down to them. I direct them to the answers they seek. If I do not have anything worthwhile to add to their post...I just leave it alone. Everyone is new at some point... And everyone needs a hand up at some point... Help...or don't help. Anything else is wasting time. It's just that simple.
Why not use the energy u spent in writing that short story into using google?

You need to calm down and chill, the links in that thread may be broken, but there's also a reason why we have the bible thread with EVERYTHING possible included. Therefore, simply search there and you'd not have the need to worry about broken links. I'll talk to Hasoon about fixing the links, my point being, your rant wasn't needed since it's pretty obvious now for someone that's been around the block to not know the basics of finding things around here.

You're not a n00b, can we let this go please? Some people get frustrated seeing the same thing being posted again and again, that's why most users will post a rude response, though I wouldn't say GG was rude, it didn't even seem to be directed at anyone in specific, anyways, my point is, the bible thread was created to lessen questions being asked and also simplify the doing of everything that's currently possible on this device, so you can't really be mad at anyone responding in a blank manner either. But on the other hand, just let it go, try to read around, if you find a broken link or so, post it in the relevant thread and if you think the OP is a nice enough individual to accept a PM, then shoot them a PM and sort it out that way, no need to get hostile, okay? Great, so take relax and have fun, this place is a pretty quiet easy going group, join in the fun and just don't take things personal.

I've seen mixed feelings about the switch, in my group, some prefer their nexus, some sold theirs, some kept both, which half of them used the nexus more, so it's bit of an iffy situation, to be honest, I love my nexus, this one is better than the first one I got, so I just may stick to it, though if given the opportunity to swap, I will try out the s3 knowing I could always swap it back since someone will want one.

Noobs

I thought I'd do essential topic for Noobs out there, okay well in here or outside if you're outside.
So these are the essential things you must do after getting your shiny new scratch free powerhouse mobile.
1. Root your mobile
This is essential if you want to learn what your phone can do and believe me it can do loads, I've still not learned everything and already I'm amazed.
2. Download the xda toolkit, I have no link but do a search here. It's like a step by step to rooting and the other things I'll mention.
3. Install directory bind as it will enable you to move some of your apps to your sd micro card if you have bought one and buy one if you haven't it will help.
4. Learn about roms and kernels and visit the developers forum as these are great for modifying your mobile the way you want it, I'm turning mine into a mini entertainment system. It would be great if could modify the other things like the s voice to programme it to say what you wanted it to every time you wanted to do a task and add a sexy woman's voice too.
5. Once you have modified it the way you want and made it your very special friend (okay I'm exaggerating) do a nandroid backup as it will back up the way you have your device and it's quite simple to do.
This is to make sure that if at some point you have to do a factory reset and believe me you will as I had to do one today when this annoying message kept popping up to say something about a Google gapps isn't working so I just gave up and did a full wipe, it doesn't save game sd data but if you've already learned how to use directory bind you won't worry about that.
Oh and install the xda app as it's much easier to to type than using a browser and easier to find your way around this site.
6. Do a search about the things I've talked about as there are step by steps to help you along the way.
I'm sure I've forgotten some things but these are things I've found are essential.
That's all I've learned really so I've run out of numbers.
I'm off now to learn some new things.
Farewell my fellow Noobs.
OP your telling people how YOU like to use your device. All of what you listed is only essential if that's what you want to do. And if you do want to do it, there's guides walking you through all the steps. No need to tell "noobs" what they should be doing. I know users on here that stay stock non-rooted..
OP, I applaud your intent but I am with Coreym on this one.
Any advice to noobs that starts with '1. Root your mobile' is staggeringly misguided and borderline reckless. There are increasing numbers of noobs on this site for whom 'walk in a straight line' would be a challenge.
If you really want to help noobs perhaps your advice would be better rephrased as follows:
Do nothing for now
Read
Keep reading
Read some more
When you think you understand re-read everything to ensure you do understand
Do the thing

The posters above you Coreym & Gustopher are right, maybe edit your post with Gustopher suggestions would be sounder advice.
I've had my phone 3 weeks, on the second day I leaned how to root it and I've learned and done everything else.
Found it all pretty straight forward to learn it all and do them, maybe I'm just a quick learner.
Don't know what else there is to learn.

Probably the most drama i've ever been trough over a phone. Guess people take this too seriously. A new phone comes out every 5-6 months i doubt half of you will even have this phone for more than a year, and to be responding the way you are is just WOW. All this for a phone you wont remember in 2 years. Again you're free not to read my post. Clearly im new to this "XDA" thing and know the bare minimum (root, cwm, cm10), hence the questions. Roms and roots were easy for my SGH Skyrocket, but is wayy more difficult for the LGOG for a newbie. Im learning though. Thanks to all of the chill people who helped in an appropriate manner. To all those who made having this phone living hell thank you too for making it clear that some people need a hug. Everyday. All day.

Everyday. All day.
-Again thanks for all the helpful insights. I couldn't thank you enough

What you don't seem to understand is that no one minds questions, but asking a question, when there's a whole thread dedicated to the question (a thread that shows up 2-3 items down the forum thread list, from your) is absurd and does nothing but clutter these pages. Doing so makes people think that you are either too lazy to search for an answer or believe that your time is more important than ours, so we're supposed to provide the link for you or write the answer again. Why would you expect people to do either of those things?

We get that you're new to XDA. But given your age and generation, you should at least be somewhat familiar with technology (the fact that you are flashing ROMs and even on this website in the first place is proof of that) so we expect you to have a minimal understanding of forum etiquette. Like the guy above me said, the link to "How to use LGNPST on Windows 8" was just 2 threads away from the top when I posted the link to it in my reply.
Put yourself in our position. If EVERYONE decided to make a new thread every time they had a question that was answered 100s of times already instead of using the search feature or checking the stickies, just imagine how cluttered and unreadable this forum would be. We would be spending more time sifting through threads to find somewhat relevant ones. So basically you can see why we get a little uppity for threads like this.
Anyway, best of luck to you. Good job getting this phone. You're gonna love it! :good:
Since you're new you should have read the forum rules and watched the nice video XDA created that covers the basic forum etiquette like searching and not creating threads covering topics that have already been covered.
I think you need to go watch that video again, and stop breaking the rules. You're not making much of an impression with the members here so far, from what I can tell. To me you're coming across as both an asshat and not terribly bright. What you do from here on out is up to you, but I'd suggest a change in attitude would be a good start. Getting defensive and butthurt doesn't help your cause.
Start taking what we're saying as constructive criticism intended to help you conform to how things work here (even if it is delivered harshly). You'll find a lot of your questions have already been answered, and if not, people are willing to help if you ask the right questions the right way.
