app not showing in app drawer. help! - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

when i first bought my Thunderbolt, i paid Verizon for the full version of the Rock Band app. before i installed a custom ROM, i backed up all my APK including the Rock Band apk that i have.
once i'm within the custom ROM, i was able to reinstall the game and even played it. i got it opened from the menu that appears after side loading an app that says either "open" or "done" but the app itself does not show in the app drawer. the game does show under the "manage applications" list. i just don't know how to re-open it since there's no shortcut.

i found a work around. i downloaded Any Cut from the Market and it allowed me to place the shortcut on the desktop. but i still rather have it show on the app drawer as well. at least now, i can actually open the game.
i kinda learned my lesson now. i'm not going to pay for apps anymore unless it's from the Market or if the developer makes it easy to switch devices or ROM installs.

HOWTO: Access to the Android Market using your Phone

You'll need to have done the following:
Rooted NC - check NookDevs (or here for Win7) for instructions
Modified NC to allow non-market apps - instructions here
Install Astro File Manager on your phone
Install Hoccer (attached) on both your phone and NC
the instructions are simple:
download an app through the android market on your phone
open Astro
Click Menu
Select Tools
Select Application/Backup Manager
Select your app(s) that you want to backup, and click backup
Press Back
Navigate to /sdcard/backups/apps
Long press on an app
Select Share
Select Hoccer
Run Hoccer on NC
Slide the app over to the NC (instructions are in Hoccer)
Accept Install
How does this work I thought that Haccer used Bluetooth to make it work? does it also use wifi if they are on the same network?

You need to be on the same wifi network for this to work.
Pretty awesome. It worked for me. I installed Amazon, kindle, stocks, exchange rate, msn Talk and Xda apps using the hoccer method and all of them work.
I just keep getting your data must be dragged to near by screen even though they're both on the same wifi and right next to each other. I thought Hoccer needed a location signal to work.
Yep. It took a couple of tries to get the sequence right.
On your phone once you hit send from Astro you get the hoccer context menu and clicking that gives you a screen with a grey box at the center. There is a info bar at the top with "transfer time xxx seconds". Now place you nook close by with hoccer running and flip you finger on the nook screen from right end to left. You get a similar grey box on the nook and then the files get transferred. You should see a linking nearby devices or something to that effect when the grey box appears on the nook.
HTH
Works now. That made a lot more sense. Thanks.
I use dropbox instead of Hoccer (on other devices, haven't tried it on NC yet), unless I'm missing some functionality that I didn't see...?
Yea I also just use dropbox
email the apps with Astro
I did the method above with Astro but instead of using hoccer I just emailed the apps to myself with astro and it seems to works fine. Easier than trying to get hoccer to work I think. Only had trouble with one application that started, ran for five seconds then shut down and I got a message saying "unistall app, restart device, then reinstall app using the android market". Anyone else email the apps to themselves? Is there a good reason not to do it this way?
Thanks
Got it now. You actually have to SLIDE it off 1 phone, then SLIDE it ON TO the nook. Works perfect. Nice find
I installed applanet. Seems to have most of the usual apps
From the market. Any reason no one else is using applanet?
You can install and update from their app just like google
market.
sent from my rooted NookColor

Probably because Applanet allows you to pirate paid apps.

Weird app installing itself?

I noticed that for a few weeks now I'm getting spam type notifications in my notification bar saying things like I've won a free ipad. Was just clearing them out, but now I notice that a shortcut to a "market" has showed up on my homescreen. Can't find anything I didn't install in titanium or my stock application manager. Anyone know what this is and how it gets through my security app. I'm using bit defender. I notice my phones a bit glitchy as well. Widgets aren't wanting to load up. I'd like to figure it out before I do a data wipe.
Usually happens after installing a cracked app. Although I have seen this after installing MP3 Music down loaders as well.
Search for "Airpush detector" in the market then uninstall whatever apps are detected then they shouldn't show up again
Check this out.

Thanks for the info. Got em. It was a couple of winter scene live wallpapers.

There are a number of apps that do the same type of thing, Titanium Backup will 'freeze' apps as well as a whole host of additional features.
Then of course, another option is to just rename the apps from *.apk to *.bpk and rebooting.
My personal preference is a third option called Autostarts which is similar to MSconfig in Windows but for Android. The reason being is, it gives you the ability to keep an app from ever running unless you actually tap the app to run it but still allows you to keep the app installed in the event you want to use it. Google Maps comes to mind, I want it installed, I dont want it running in the background.
I dont recommend removing any of the bloatware if you plan on staying on stock but, some of it for US Note users was able to be uninstalled without root via either Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All Applications, then tap an app and see if uninstall was lit up, if so, sweet. Or, alternatively you could go thru the Market->(Menu Key)->My Apps but not all apps show up in this list. As a side note, I actually manually did a search for many of the apps on the phone and manually updated them because they were not showing up in the market 'My Apps' list.
One other side note, most of the Samsung apps are actually pretty decent, I usually dont touch them. Its the ATT software and the apps ATT took bribe money from third parties that bothers me (Yellow Pages for example).
Oh, and a little known feature of Go Launcher is the ability to hide apps.
Tap the App drawer icon to get to the list of apps on your phone, tap the menu button, tap hide apps. For those of us that havent bothered to root, this at least gives you the ability to not have to look at apps you dont want to see in the app drawer.
Wow thank you for all the info. As far as staying stock, I like making my devices unique to me, I did keep all spen related apps, but killed pretty much everything else. I doubt my phone will ever see an official release of anything, Xda all the way

Just to add I guess a 'fourth' option, I like to use the app 'root toolbox' available on the market with both free and pro versions. Under the advanced menu you can remove any system apps you like but the nice thing is anything you remove is automatically backed up to the root toolbox folder on the internal sd. The backup is done automatically so you dont have to worry about removing something and forgetting to backup first and also gives you the option to restore any system apps you removed simply and easily. Ill be honest the restore feature has saved my bacon many times lol and is also a great way to experiment which apps are safe and unsafe to remove.

Polaris usable?

Hey, I realized we have Polaris when I opened a word doc from dropbox.
Plus I found the actual apk when looking at our installed system apps with es file explorer.
Is there a way to add a short cut to the app menu and eventually home screens, so we can independently launch and use the app?
Thanks

So I clicked on the System Apps apk a couple times but every time it would say, can not install. But low in behold, when I checked a shortcut was added to my app menu automatically, and I could launch the app and use it and make new docs, etc...
...about 2 weeks later, just now, I push the short cut and it now says, app not installed...and the attempt to install again from the system's app folder has no effect.
Any help would be appreciated...if anyone's alive out there...reading these posts... ;P
When I installed Nova Launcher the icon showed up and has been functioning since. It appears AT&T has their grubby hands in this...

Virus or background processes?

I have these two different apps(?) that have shown up in my app drawer and I'm not sure what to make of them. One's named "mainline_train_primary" and the other's "trichromelibrary" or something along those line.
I use Ruthless launcher and they're only visible when I enable the option to show apps that are being installed in the app drawer. They're not there when I try other launchers or disable to the option.
They're also not actually installed so it doesn't do anything when I try to uninstall them. They both open up in Play Store when I click on them, but returns the message "To view this content, install and set up a web browsing app". I can manage to open them in a browser when I change the way Play Store opens up supported links. They both lead to market.android.com/details?id=[the name of the app]%[some numbers] but just wind up as 404 pages.
What confuses me is that they're both actually something related to Google, but I'm not super savvy, so I'm not sure if these are legit or are just some viruses mimicking the real thing.
I've already tried several factory resets as well as re-flashing the stock firmware, but either one or the other would eventually show up after a while.
I'm on the Essential Ph-1. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
