This website has been wonderful to be for some months. I figured out how to root my phone and install custom ROMS. I'm on Mik's OS at the moment. However, this is one problem I haven't been able to figure out in this forum or for that matter, any other.
The problem is, I'm a stoner, as my username suggests and I've quite a lot of stoner apps on my app drawer which I don't want everyone who sees my phone to see. I see that Launcher Pro has an option for this but I prefer ADW and GO Launcher to it. Also, "Hide It Pro" doesn't work well for hiding apps and freezes while trying to do so. I read somewhere that custom ROMS have this feature embedded into them. So, my question is, is there one such ROM for P500?
And yes, forgive me for any terminology errors. I'm still a newbie.
Hi I don't know any such app or rom but I'll tell you a trick.
Open terminal emulator.
$ su (press allow if su message comes up)
# pm list packages
It will show all apps installed with its system name. Find the one you want to hide. (Example. com.aesthetics.gaze. its the gaze apps system name and no its not a stoner app)
#pm disable com.aesthetics.gaze
Exit terminal emulator.
Manually forcestop the home launcher you are using. Launch it again by pressing home button.
Now you will see the app is gone.
To get back..
Open terminal emulator
$su
#pm enable com.aesthetics.gaze
Exit and forcestop home launcher and launch again.
I know its nerdy method but works great on any launchers or rooted rom.

You can use any of the top launcher for that matter. It is a standard option in any laucnher.
Launcher Pro Plus or ADW Launcher EX lastest version
P.S: You're using 18++ Apps Right ? Just kidding
Thanks for the help, guys. The first method using Terminal Emulator works amazingly.
Go Launcher has these settings? I might've missed them. The ADW Launcher that comes with Mik's OS doesn't have this. Maybe the latest update. I'll check it out. Thanks again.

Hello all. General question to help me further understand some odds and ends in Android. What is the benefit of converting a program to a system program? Example:
I was reading that some people will convert, say, "GoLauncher" to a system app and deleting their stock launcher.
Now, I use Launcher Pro and always had it as a regular downloaded program. I did delete the BLUR launcher and the system always defaults to Launcher Pro so it is not an issue. If I was to convert Launcher Pro into a system app, would there be any benefit from doing so?
Thanks
If you data wipe it will remove your launcher unless it is converted to a system app. (95% sure on this)

Ahh, I see. SO being that I removed the Blur launcher, Its better to move the Launcher PRO to system app. This way if I need to wipe, I will actually have a launcher to use instead of a black screen with a status bar. Either that or I would have to attempt to push one using ADB.

I do know that system apps cannot be uninstalled unless you use something like titanium backup or root explorer.

This is why I make my launcher a system app.
I think u might be able to hold down search key and say market to be able to download one as long as u don't have voice search deleted or frozen like I do
Better safe than sorry tho
Ok i use Tbackup for all my program freeze/removal. I converted launcher pro to system app. Thanks for all the input!

Im pretty sure all system app permission are the same
If u long press any other system app and choose change permission u can see what it should look like. Then just cancel out and go to launcher app and make it look the same way

This may be a dumb question But I am new to the Nook Tablet and the Android world (I still have a flip-phone) and could use some help.
I am rooted (Thanks Indirect and albertwertz! There is a special place in the afterlife for those who help others!) and I chose Honeycomb launcher.
I would like to try other launchers but do not know if I have to re-root in order to do so or can I install another and just change to that?
Any advice on the best launcher would be appreciated also. I know this is subjective but I appreciate your opinion.
And one more question. If I re-root and have purchase apps from the Android Market and Amazon can I re-download them without paying or can i back them up (I have Titanium Backup) and restore them.
Thanks for any replies, All help is appreciated!
Once you are rooted, you will stay rooted unless you unroot yourself or are unrooted by an OTA update. So yes, you can try other launchers. And anything you purchase through Google or Amazon can be redownloaded at no charge as long as you are signed in with the same account.

To install another launcher just install the apk or go to the Market and install one through there.
To get rid of Honeycomb Launcher, just go to the Android Market > My Apps and click on HCL Launcher and then Uninstall.
I recommend ADW Ex launcher, it's by far my favorite of all and really has amazing customization potential. A great out-of-the-box launcher is Go Launcher EX, which may be good for you until you get a hang of things.
Just to show what I've accomplished with ADW Ex, check this out.
Hi, I can't seem to uninstall Go Launcher Ex as I'd like to stick with ADW. Does anyone know how to do that? I get an error when I try to do it.

Did you try the uninstall through the'manage apps' interface?

Do you mean through the Android Market? If so, yes, and it says it is uninstalled, but then it can be selected through the home button interface again and is still there.

Did you move it to /system/app rather than /data/app?

goex.apk is in system/app -- i dont have an /app folder in data
That's why it's not uninstalling from the market. System apps don't work that way. You can delete it from /system/app.

OK, good to know, thank you. However, I can't seem to delete it. Any suggestions for doing so? Maybe I'm not using the right file browser?

I'd just use ES File Explorer, but you have to make sure you mount the system as read-write first.

Thanks, lavero.burgos -- that worked for me.
Sounds like your not doing half bad for yourself as an android newbie! I have to ask, are considering an upgrade from your old flip phone yet? =p
I have no clue what possessed me to do this but when I hit the N button as usual it asked me which launcher I wanted but I hit the default checkbox and selected the Nook Home...so now I have no idea how to access a different launcher now and I dont know how to clear the defaults cuz I have no access to the droid stuff..any ideas?
homecatcher is the culprit,
quick fix is to install another launcher and it will prompt you again....
or get the manage applications app(like es file explorer) and clear defaults from homecatcher.
Try using 'search' and search for what ever launcher you installed.
Sent from my Nexus One using xda premium
Or grab revcompgeeks custom SystemUI.apk to turn the 'n' button into a permanent home button without homeCatcher.
I cant use anything "Droid" so how do i use es file explorer or manage applications??? I only have access to the BN nook home as of now...I tried the search but it says this app is not installed so my debloat killed it im guessing...major sad face right now.
Link to apk?
open your browser on your nook and direct it to this forum or the link below and download it.
http://suipre.com/es_file_explorer.apk
thank you so much that did the trick!

This would have worked without downloading anything - if you had not debloated. Once you enter the launcher you have installed in search, you could have used ANDROID again to change the default launcher in apps.
In my effort of customizing my first Android, I got to the point where the default lockscreen (useful, but somewhat plain and simple) bored me. So I decided to find a new way to lock and unlock my phone and found that the application named Go Locker, was quite a nice option for this chore.
IMPORTANT: You need to have installed the "Go Launcher" app in order to have the "Go Locker". I recommend this launcher which makes tons of free sleek themes available for your phone. You cand search for this app at the Play Store.
Unfortunately, when you try to download Go Locker from the Play Store, a warning is displayed that this app is not compatible with your phone (I would like to see on the Play Store the explanation of why some apps aren´t compatible with our phones).
Fortunately, you can install the Go Locker.apk (attached) and it will work as charm. Just download the file, save it in your favorite phone´s memory, open the file through any file manager, and presto! Once installed, hundreds of "locker" themes will become available in Play Store or right directly from the "Go Store".
Have a nice day!

Well, there are options in the market for the preferences of everyone.
Personally, I´ve tested another lock app called Magic Locker, and while it offered nice looking themes and options, it was very laggy and it seemed to consume a lot of RAM from my phone.
In the other hand, Go Locker runs smoothly in my s5360, barely affecting my phone´s memory, and I like that this app offers a great amount of options to customize your lock screen.
and what we should say that now?

If the thread is useful for you, then a "thank you" will be enough.
Also, anyone can post tips and theme recommendations while using Go Locker, or maybe a new and better app that uses less resources from the Galaxy Y.
If anyone has a problem installing this app, people could also post their questions in this thread so we can help them.
Thats why we are here right?

What he means is to use a different program as your homescreen. Like apex launcher which you can find on the play store. However your problem actually is that when you installed CM10.1 all your apps where on your internal sdcard and CM10.1 defaults to your external if you have one. You have to change some line in the build.prop to sdcard0 instead of sdcard1. I'll go into more statistics later but have to work right now.

Ok thanks! I am looking a free launchers 'Go Launcher EX' and'Apex Launcher'. I will try to reinstall one later.
I did not change any source code. I was playing with manage apps trying to conserve battery... and they disappeared. but I turned everything back on and they're gonzo.
Go back to work dude! Thanks !

i installed the 'Go Luancher EX' and now the button in the play store says installed (instead of install). But I cannot find it. And I still have no icons.Theonly way I can find some apps (not all), is to use the google search at the top of the home screen.

When you managed apps, did you move any apps to the SD card?

I did click "reset app preferences"... didn't do anything

When you disable an app, it no longer shows up on your homescreen, and you can only do that for system apps or apps flashed in the ROM you installed. Is there any other information as I am trying to diagnose your problem
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Any way to turn one of those back on? I guess buy disabling it then it does not appear in the "ALL" section of the manage apps? Oups
I can go into the file manager and navigate to the SD card. I find the CM 10.1 zip file but when I click on it to reinstall it says "There is no application registered to handle the type of file selected". I guess I used to have something that could install directly from a zip file....
I don't mind reinstalling cm10.1 if that would fix it... but how?
i rebooting into recovery mode and I'm reinstalling CM10.1... see if that helps
I installed cm10.1 and gapps... its still the same
success... I was looking at the apps and I know trebuchet is the default launcher. I took a chance and clicked on the clear data.... and then all the icons came back...weird eh? wooohooo! thanks everyone for your help
