Can you rename a Nandroid backup? With so many ROM's out there, I want to try different ones but there is no way I will remember which backup is what unless I can rename them.
The short answer seems to be: yes. I'm only Googling this, so I can't verify.
I believe you can rename any backup, just don't put spaces in the backup name.
I've renamed backups with Amon RA recovery on the OG EVO and now with ClockworkMod 4.0.1.4 on the EVO 3D.
Creating and restoring those backups went flawlessly.
Yes, you can rename it to whatever you like since you are going to manually select the file anyhow. The system won't balk at your renaming of the file. Keeping spaces out is always good, seen problems with this is in the past.
Thanks guys.

In Rom Manager there should be a option to Manage Backups then Rename the backup!

You can rename backups, very easily with any file explorer.....If you are using Team Win's recovery navigate to; /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/HTXXXXXX/"your backups are here...rename them"

The reason I Recommended doing it through Rom Manager is because for whatever reason... whenever I tried doing it through a FileExplorer it seemed to Always say there was a Md5 Mismatch of some sort! Through Rom Manager I Always have more Success!

I'm using Amora recovery and I was wondering the best way to rename backups that are still able to be loaded without aborting

I doubt that this is the right section for your post, but I would also like to know the answer to this.
Yes should be in general. From my experience with clockworkmod recovery you could not rename recoveries. Have not tried with amon ra.

You can use Rom manager to rename backups, it will generate a New md5 I believe, I used to use it aalllll the time, it made life easier. i also used clockworkmod when I used it. Never tried it on amon ra.
Otherwise, it will probably be easier to put them in folders or something..
you also can't have ANY spaces in the folder name.
On CWM and Amon Ra, I have renamed without issue using Root Explorer. Just make your backup, reboot phone, go into the proper folder and find your backup, long press on the backup you want to rename, and choose the rename option.
So i restored back to stock blur rom cuz i was feeling all nostalgic and to get a few TB backups. Well when i attempted to restore back to CM9 i kept getting "MD5 Mismatch!" errors. Well it turns out I had left spaces in that and a few other renamed backup folders which apparently is a no-no. Luckily i was able to restore back to another backup, rename the folders without spaces via USB and was able to restore CM9 backups. Just thought this may help others. You might want to check your backup file folder names and get rid of the spaces.
Well I've never thought of renaming then but either way this is good to know for future reference

Thats why I use _ in place of spaces when dealing with CWM backups, makes it easy to read and usable

Ok i have a a few backups and i need to see whats on them, i know unyaffs-x86-win but that disnt show what i want it to.. is there an emulator where i can restore from backup.. all my 4g evo are broke, which is what the backups are from.. i have a 3d, can i restore it on that? what are my options..
You could restore your og backups onto your 3d if you want to risk bricking your phone.
The recovery I use compresses the backup as a tarball file so you could try to open it with something like 7zip. Never tried it myself, so reply back with how it goes.

If it was saved in your data or the app you were using. But if you were using the native text app on the phone I dont think so.

It will read the DATA backup but whatever you do, DO NOT INSTALL SYSTEM APP's you will screw up your rom. Yes System app's will be listed in the data backup.
What I was talking about if you were not using a market text messaging app then you wont be able to get the texts back.
is there a way to rename a nandroid back up?
if you are using CWM u can do with a file explorer, navigate to clockworkmod/backup/name folder of what u want, no spaces, u can use . though. or with TWRP u can do it before you do the backup on the right where it says rename backup.

I have ended up with MD5 mismatch far too many times renaming CWM backups, I tend these days to place the backup itself into another folder and title that, tends to save the risk of a very irritating error.
TWRP is pretty badass in that it allows you to title your own backups before you even start the backup process. Much more organized of a way to do it if ya ask me.
When naming a backup avoid special characters, period's etc. -_ are OK. Absolutely no spaces. Follow those rules and your fine. To answer op, grab your favorite file explorer (I prefer Root explorer) and rename it under clockwork/backup.

thanks for all of the replies guys... I got it... should have known this I guess... just wasn't something I ever really needed to do but now with all the great roms out there for the note... its hard to settle on one.. so organizing my Nbackups is important... thanks guys really appreciate it and love this community! cheers

this is the correct method...IMHO.:good:
I've renamed mine countless times with no spaces... no problems at all.
you could just make a folder with the name you like, and move the backup to that folder, avoiding the chance of a mismatched checksum.
Twrp is really easy to use

Use an older version of clockwork recovery (5.5.x or touch 6.1) and they create a single zip, latest clockwork did offer an option to change the way it backups last time I checked also.

I tried to use zip from CWM but it doesn't seem to do the full nandroid backup. Any ideas?

It created the zip file and some other files in the folder, however the size is too small to be the recovery image. I doesn't create the full image. Still doesnt work. Is there a way to create a full nandroid backup into a single file with all the settings as it is done in normal cwr backup? Any help appreciated.

Creating tar recovery results in multiple files in recovery folder not a single zip file. My question was is there a way to create a single zip file that can be flashed in recovery as a custom rom.
I use the older version of cwm which creates full nandroid into 5 or so files. I then zip it into one but you have to unzip it to restore it. I don't think there is a clean way to create one full flashable nandroid with all your data and settings etc... I would also like to know if there is a way.

The same thing for me, searched for forums and no success. Thank you for your answer. Perhaps you could also know if there is any possible way to install stock samsung bootanimation on CM10 rom?

Not on CM10 they might have different locations for there boot image not sure.
In regards to the Nandroid I was just thinking about it actually and I find it quite strange as to why after ALL this time there isnt a way to create a FULL nandroid with apps, settings, themes, data.contacts, EVERYTHING all in the one file so its flashable. I mean it wouldnt be that hrd for the dev to do it as there is an option for the update zip. I really dont get it. Wouldnt everyone prefer it that way?

I fully agree, it would have been much easier for testers to get back to the rom they tuned and customized. Any ideas are always welcome.
Yes. It will be very easy to keep the backups if we could make a signal zip file. so we can name it with date and keep.
