I'm using Amora recovery and I was wondering the best way to rename backups that are still able to be loaded without aborting

I doubt that this is the right section for your post, but I would also like to know the answer to this.
Yes should be in general. From my experience with clockworkmod recovery you could not rename recoveries. Have not tried with amon ra.

You can use Rom manager to rename backups, it will generate a New md5 I believe, I used to use it aalllll the time, it made life easier. i also used clockworkmod when I used it. Never tried it on amon ra.
Otherwise, it will probably be easier to put them in folders or something..
you also can't have ANY spaces in the folder name.
On CWM and Amon Ra, I have renamed without issue using Root Explorer. Just make your backup, reboot phone, go into the proper folder and find your backup, long press on the backup you want to rename, and choose the rename option.

i wouldnt recommend using ROM manager but if you have amon recovery theres a nand backup & restore for those purposes under the backup and restore tab.

Yes, just use the Amon Recovery, which you're probably using, to flash update.zip from the SD card. update.zip is put there by ROM Manager and will take you to Clockwork Mod Recovery. From there you can access the NAND backups you told it to make from ROM Manager. If you're talking about deleting old NAND backups from Recovery, not exactly, but you can mount your SD card through USB from recovery (easier in Amon RA, but can be done via an option in one of the menus in Clockwork Mod, too) and then "manage" the files from Windows.
Does this answer your question?
Can you rename a Nandroid backup? With so many ROM's out there, I want to try different ones but there is no way I will remember which backup is what unless I can rename them.
The short answer seems to be: yes. I'm only Googling this, so I can't verify.
I believe you can rename any backup, just don't put spaces in the backup name.
I've renamed backups with Amon RA recovery on the OG EVO and now with ClockworkMod 4.0.1.4 on the EVO 3D.
Creating and restoring those backups went flawlessly.
Yes, you can rename it to whatever you like since you are going to manually select the file anyhow. The system won't balk at your renaming of the file. Keeping spaces out is always good, seen problems with this is in the past.
Thanks guys.

In Rom Manager there should be a option to Manage Backups then Rename the backup!

You can rename backups, very easily with any file explorer.....If you are using Team Win's recovery navigate to; /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/HTXXXXXX/"your backups are here...rename them"

The reason I Recommended doing it through Rom Manager is because for whatever reason... whenever I tried doing it through a FileExplorer it seemed to Always say there was a Md5 Mismatch of some sort! Through Rom Manager I Always have more Success!
Standard folder backup name for cwm 4.0.1.4 is like 2011.11xxxxsomething. and when i rename a folder to a easy to remember folder e.g. "infectedrom".when i tried to use restore. It says files and folders are emtpy.all i did is just renamed my folder. ANY IDEAS????TNX
---------------
I dont use rom mnger(paid version btw) bec. The last time i used it.it screwed my phone.
It upgraded my cwm 4xxx to 5xxx,whenvr i use backup,it ask for backup name, but did not backup just restarted my phne, and if i use restore, there is no restore point(bec it never backup in d 1stplace).when using hboot 1.5(bootloader) when pressing restore,it dont go cwm, just restarts my phone.so i never used rom mng after that....

Please let me say I am comfortable in rooting, flashing, mods etc... but Amon Ra is new to me coming from using CWM on my other phones.
I have Amon Ra installed and I have made my Nandroid back ups, choosing "Boot, System, Data and Compress." Now every time I try to Restore from with Amon Ra I get restore failed.
What am I missing, I have read around the forums and they basically tell you how to install Amon Ra but I have yet to come across a detailed guide on how it should be used to both Backup and Restore correctly. I know about the issues with Sense and Resound with CWM so I am trying to get a better understanding of Amon Ra. Am I backing up incorrectly and that is what is causing the failure on the restores? When the backup is made in the Nandroid folder, can I rename it, can I move it into another folder so I can better organize my backups.. etc Cleanrom or Ineffabilis. I see the prenamed folders Amon Ra makes from the back up (Dated) that I have renamed or put in another folder, is this where my issue is stemming?
If anyone can guide me in the right direction, I would be thankful.
Are you on ICS leak?

yes
Your guess about renamed folders and moving stuff is right on.
If you have the good backup on a computer, use Amon Ra to totally
wipe your phone everything Everything, including internal. Complete.
Then do a backup.
Now look at the nandroid/HTxxxxx folders on the sdCard.
Erase the backup of nothing that you just created and replace
it with the good backup.
Restore that, and it'll work like a charm.
Also I've read somewhere here on xda that you should choose
'boot, system, data, cache, android secure, android secure_internalSD'.
Don't compress unless your sdCard is small.
Restore thru Google playMarket thing and you're good to go.
Also, note where it stores (HTC STORAGE) music, ringtones, and pictures
so you can add your stock ones to those places. Once it's just like you
want it, copy both sdCard and HTC STORAGE to your computer. Then you
don't have to be shy about changing things up: a good backup makes it easy.
Also make sure you are on latest amon ra ver 3.15. I had that problem a while back.

I am using the latest version 3.15 And I am looking to stay with the GB roms as of now but that could change any day as well.
"Now look at the nandroid/HTxxxxx folders on the sdCard."
I understand this easily
"Erase the backup of nothing that you just created and replace
it with the good backup."
Sorry do not follow this...
"Also I've read somewhere here on xda that you should choose
'boot, system, data, cache, android secure, android secure_internalSD'.

Why would you want your cache and sorry I do not know what "android secure, android secure_internalSD" are or do?
Wouldn't just having Boot, System and Data be able to get you to a restore point?
Amon Ra created the Nandroid/HTxxxxx folder on the sdcard and in that is another folder that is labeled from the looks of it with the date. I am looking to keep my backups on my sdcard so while I am out in the world if I have the desire or need to restore or even change Roms I can do so without having to be attached to a PC.
Any suggestions on how to label the Backups on the sdcard so I can restore from them but know the difference between them. ie Cleanrom or any other rom I keep a backup of?
And thank you for the suggestions on this, to better help a blurred mind on Amon Ra.

You can only flash kernels(boot) in fastboot or as ph98img.zip's . so if you restore and you are restoring to a different kernel then it will fail.
You would need to not backup boot and then keep the ph98img.zip's on hand but not on the root of the sd card until you want to use them.
Hope for s off soon! (don't hound anyone making progress on it)
once s off we can do kernels not just in fastboot and ph98's
Sorry, if I may make sure I understand this, so I back up boot, system and data. When I need to restore, I restore system and data through amon ra and then restore the boot file through Fastboot?

You can change the name of the file after the last dash. it'll have the date, then you change the junk after it.
Hi this is my first post on xda so bear with my n00biness.
I've flashed Entropy's ClockworkMod and a couple of ics roms and it was really nice and getting better every new release. However, my occasional need for my camera and flash player brought me to do a restore back to stock rom (which I backed up on cwm).
Unfortunately, when cwm checks its md5 sum it ends up with an error saying there's a mismatch.
Is there a problem with my version of cwm? Or would I have to wipe my data beforehand?

well what i do when i flash back my recovery i factory reset and then clear cache and wipe dalvik cache then i flash my recovery
Did you rename the backup? Sometimes this causes CWM to mess up. If you did rename it then name it something like 'stock' and try restoring again

thank you so much the bit of time you've given for me, guys.. even after answering questions that you may have said already
Well now this smart guy decided to see if he has the md5 file inside the recovery file, and, pretty surprisingly, there were no nandroid file except for one of my newer backups. (But that apparently doesn't have the md5 file included in that nandroid file either )
Oh well. Renaming the backup won't bring back the file, will it? are all md5's unique per backup? And, just making sure, there needs to be a nandroid file in the recovery folder, right...?
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
umm i think they are different and yes there has to be a nandroid file in the backup folder or else if you screw up the backup wont help either way
create an empty text file and name it nandroid.md5 in the backup folder
then use my script which is located in sig
I have a similar issue with not being able to locate the backups in a folder. Not in cwm folder where they should be. I went through every file I could think of to locate with no prevail, but yet in recovery - there they are! Is this because the cwm recovery is pushed in with the kernel and not through rom manager? Also, has anybody messed around with selecting a different device in rom manager because galaxy player is not listed?
