Specifically a question for developers:
So I'm just curious when do you guys think an ICS custom ROM might be available for our vibrants?
More specifically, has google released enough of the SDK and/or ICS code for someone to actually make a working ICS ROM?
Can't wait to see it in action!
Thanks
Edit: my question really is:
what requirements do developers need to start working on a custom ROM when a new OS is released?

source hasnt dropped, the sdk is out and someone has it on the nexus s 4g, probably wont see a stable one until cm. also this is the wrong section.

I have ICS on my vibrant now. Real easy to jsut compile your own from the sdk and flash.
Can't get gps working though.
3-4 Months until you have something usable. That is provided the Vibrant still has developers left to work on it. A lot of ppl switched.

[email protected] easy! Anyone anywhere who had working ics on a phone would be on every forum bragging till their head pops off..
There are hundreds of articles that say that google is releasing the source code once "it is officially on devices".
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2395048,00.asp
How long will it take them to have a working rom is another question. The gps issue we have with gingerbread has never been actually fixed, I think it is a driver issue..?
Either way, it all depends, but it IS a valid question once the source is released, until then people are just going to flame your thread.

Google is your friend.
And regardless if this is a question about development for developers, it's still the wrong section. That is why we have a "Q&A" section for future development or whatever.

First of all, it's still a question, regardless of the content, unless there is a specific development thread about ics, this question belongs in the q&a section, you're not someone special where the rules don't apply.
Secondly, since source for ics hasn't even been released yet (this is the vibrant, so some sdk port won't ever work, regardless of your secret hopes and dreams), and even then, it's gonna take people a bit to get situated with the new code, and get used to the new features, apis, and bugs.
To ask for a timeline for something that's not even out into phones that it's actually built for is kinda insulting to people IMHO.
But, I give it 2-3 months after source drop to get into a basic useable form on the vibrant.

First, I never said you demanded a a timeline, I said you asked. And the hopes and dreams thing wasn't directly at you, it was directed at all the people who don't finish reading a sentence, and only tale from a sentence what they want and twist everything around (and also takes cares of the stupid "one can hope" comments).

...he linked to a file that was ripped out of the SDK and uploaded by someone else. He didn't compile it from source or anything. While that's nice of him to link to it here (I guess), it really doesn't belong here.
"Development" forums are pretty self-explanatory; if you made it, it goes here. If you didn't make it, it doesn't go here. We might sometimes be dicks about it but that's usually only because of how confident OPs feel about the fact they're perfectly within their right to put things like this in this section.

Now you're just being outright rude. It's not "your" parade. You didn't make this. You had no part of any bit of it. You for some reason are behaving as though you just brought us kernel source, but in reality, you simply reposted something that many, many people are already aware of and you had posted it in the wrong forum.

Honestly don't think it has to do with age some people are just like that. I can see the confusion between posting here and Dev forum since the original thread was posted in dev forum. Someone corrected OP, now he knows. Lets just move on.
I have had the Google Now for two or three days now and even though it doesn't have Voice, I prefer it over the default search. Before if you wanted to search for something on the web you had to search and then tap on the result and it would open it on your web browser. This actually opens it up right away inline within the app without having to open a web browser. You can then select images, places or your own phone. I think people that are looking away from it simply because it doesn't have voice search should give it another look. Between the cards and the inline searching, it's obviously better.
Edited by Moderator.
Where's your Rom at? Are you working on anything?
Ok, here's what happens, the devs here are great, and have the potential to be on par as any other devs that have been on xda for a long time. They are working on lots of stuff, yes, many are broken, that's mostly HTC's Fault for releasing half asked sources, and making things different, but there's another issue... The users here want all this stuff badly! So you can somehow blame the impatience of wanting something new.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
The broken ROMs Arnt for people like you, they are dev releases so other devs could work on it, keeping things open source keeps things better

There are many roms in the development section... Also please don`t complain about a lack of development and pesk developers excessively about things you would like to see, they work for free and are submitting a large amount of their time for the benefit of others.

You sir, really need to brush up your manners and read up on matters before you post absolute and utter crap like this.
For starters, this is about as rude as it gets. Lloir and some others are working as hard as they can (and are willing too) on bringing Cyanogenmod to the AT&T bull**** device, be grateful for that. They are doing it in their own time without being on anyone's payroll.
So please, next time when you decide to post complete bullcrap, use that gray mass that you have stored in your dome.
Are you finished?
Ok thanks
reread my original post.
I didn't knock anyone's work and I am nothing but thankful that the devs donate their hard time and work. I completely understand that they are not here to satisfy me or anyone else.
I didn't ask for an eta.
I didn't request a 4.2.x rom.
I didn't complain.
When I get on the thread for a custom Rom and ask for an eta, then you can flame me.
I'm sorry for any confusion, but it is an honest question and I am genuinely just curious about the process in general. I'm not calling anyone out.

I believe you had good intentions, but when there are dozens of these threads a week the collective pestering annoys the devs. The problem isn't that you were ungrateful, it's that the devs don't want to hear stuff like "are we ever getting aosp" "I really wish this would hurry up" "why is this taking so long" etc. When you have a bunch of people whining like this, the devs feel unappreciated and demanded of, even if that's not what you were asking

I had the same issue on here, asked a genuine normal question about how we as a community can better support the devs and increase the variety of custom roms for our beloved one x+ without complaining and even writing that "I'm very grateful to the current work the devs have done"... yet was being completely misunderstood, people assuming I was demanding something specific from current devs, complaining, ungrateful etc... I think people need to first fully read and understand what a person is asking before starting to flame him instead of just assuming.

Could always build a in aosp or cm from scratch...then follow a guide I've found for porting sense...so I would find a similar device running 4.1+ android with sense 4+....and follow the guide while figuring out quirks a step at a time.
Thanks to a fellow xda member I've seen a devipered version that worked flawless for one exception, which I've already resolved on my end.
If I have more time I'm going to do some investigating to see if I can't be of use...time for this is hard to come by lately....I was thinking the gallery app could be modded to include the 3d rendering and flip the panel on....we shall see. In the meantime I'm going to keep in touch with the guy who gave me this build and see if he'd be willing to try it out...after all I don't think anyone would mind if a americanandroid member built a cm10 from source and provided it to this guy to try porting to. Right?

Seriously everyone is getting into a pissing contest over something that is based entirely on open source code (android, Linux kernel).
Unless you want to build an OS and kernel from scratch people need to chill and let the end users have the best available rom.
By this logic we shouldn't allow sense roms to be posted without getting permission from HTC.
