I did a factory reset on 2.3.4 official after installing alien rom and theme, and now I cannot go into settings. The icon doesn't exist in the app tray. Now I can't connect to the internet or enable debug. Also it says that I have no service. And when I try to go in android recovery and tap on the bottom right corner nothing happens. Could someone tell me what I can do please? Thank you.
sounds like a bad install... did you do a full wipe beforehand?
do a full wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, then reinstall.
note full wipe is not just a factory reset from the OS you need to wipe from tenfar's clockwork recovery, or connect via USB and run moto-fastboot -w
I didn't because in the install instructions for the rom it didn't say I had to, and I didn't know I was supposed to. (i'm a noob).
While on a homescreen, hit the menu button, and then "settings" to get in if the icon is missing.

well now you know
before installing any ROM you need to (to ensure a clean start)
go into clock recovery, wipe (alternatively, connect via USB, make sure you have correct drivers I presume so if you've been flashing and unlocking BL, go to moto-fastboot directory, start command line, and do moto-fastboot.exe -w)
then in clockwork recovery, wipe cache
then in clockwork recovery, advanced - wipe dalvik cache\
THEN flash away
obviously this wipes everything so backup your info/apps beforehand
I'll remember that for the next time I install a rom, even though when I had 4.1.83 and installed greyblur I never wiped anything, it wiped everything when I installed the rom. Now I need to know what are my options... Could I flash 4.5.91, or will it brick my phone? or is there another way to fix this?
I flashed sbf 4.5.91 and it worked. Thanks for the advice.

I was unlocked and rooted, but still on the stock rom.
I finally got around to installing the Alien rom and I was greeted with this message after install.
When I go to update it force closes. Its showing 3.0-beta2 as the latest version but force closes when it goes to check installed version.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you havent already done this....
Go into rom manager and run fix permissions. This can be done with Romracers CWM as well. Give that a shot and try it again.
Edit: Also did you do the full wipe routine before and after the alien rom install? Even though the ROM says its a full wipe, still do it manually before and after.
Hmm, I hadn't opened up ROM manager since this change.
It says "You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su"
As far as the wipe, I did the full wipe prior, but wasn't aware of needing to do it after. So I need to wipe Dalvik Cache and Cache Partition again?
EDIT: And of course, I can't get into Recovery Mode either. If I try to root my phone again, it says the file all ready exists?

All right, I appreciate it. But maybe a stupid question, but since I can't get into recovery mode how do I go about doing this?
EDIT: Sorry, you got me on the edit. I wasn't thinking to go through recovery via the volume key. I was trying to go through the system recovery app. As far as which recovery I used Tenfar's Bootstrap, which reading looks like I probably shouldn't have. Thanks for your help, hopefully this will cure everything.
You are going to have to use fastboot and flash the recovery image again.

Ya once we got our bootloaders unlocked Tenfars CWM became obsolete. Just pick your favorite color from the link i posted and flash with fastboot.
Thats why you got an error, tenfars wont properly flash a rom.
Just follow that wipe routine after every rom you flash. Before and after flash

I got a BIIIGGG problem.
After doing some VERY quick research i decided to get started by rooting and installing VillainROM, which worked lovely...no probs, however because there was a lack of themes (the main reason i rom'd the phone), I was swayed to go for Cynogen.
After downloading CM7.1 and installing through CWM my phone will not boot.
I have tried to do a factory reset through CWM, wipe the cache, and reinstall VillainROM but to no effect and stupidly i didnt backup my data.
Any advice on what i can do or have I bricked my phone?
What does the screen show? Can you get into download mode or recovery? Have you tried flashing the rom twice? This worked for me in the past.

Ive tried installing the rom several times
Try formatting /data, /cache and /system from CWM recovery before flashing the new ROM.
If that doesn't help flash a stock ROM from Intratech's thread in the dev section via Odin.
1st- Boot into recovery.
2nd- wipe data/factory reset
3rd- wipe cache
4th- go to advanced/ wipe dalvik cache
5th- go to mounts and storage - format/system
6th- go to install ROM from SD card - select the ROM you'd like
7th- reboot system DO NOT TOUCH MAY TAKE A WHILE
8th- let it sit for 10 minutes once its booted so all the cache can build back up
9th- reboot, set up, and enjoy!!

I've recently flash Aura ROM, and it was successful. Now I want to try the Neutrino build. Do I have to flash back to my Stock Gingerbread 4.5.91.img and then flash Neutrino?
Or do I simply go ahead and flash Neutrino with these steps.

-factor reset/data
-flash ROM in recovery
-wipe dalvik&wipe cache again
-reboot
Sadly I did not do a backup on CWM(Using Rom Racer's).
You don't uninstall a rom. You wipe and flash another.
Each rom's thread will give the wiping instructions that work best; I've only stuck with blur roms and have had luck with -- AFTER backing up -- booting into fastboot and issuing "fastboot -w", then reboot to recovery, wipe data, cache, & dalvik, and then flashing the rom.
Others recommend first wiping everything separately using fastboot (and someone will likely chime in here). If you want Neutrino, head over there and see what wipe procedures users have found the most success with.

After all this time! I've always thought you'd have to go back to your stock ROM. Thanks a bunch sheeparecurious! Neurtion seems to want you to wipe everything.
Do I need to wipe dalvik and cache everytime I flash a simple mod or add on?
Depends on the rom. Does the OP in the Neutrino thread say anything specific?
I've been able to flash mods without clearing any caches. I've seen two themes "not play nicely" when flashing one after another, and others were fine to go from theme to theme.
"Wiping data may not be necessary with every update, but it's best to flash clean. However, if you regularly flash the updates, you'll most likely need to wipe data at some stage anyway."
It says to wipe when you flash updates. Does he mean updates to Neutrion updates?

Yeah, he probably means "updates to neutrino." I'd say if you successfully flashed the rom and any additional mods you wanted, and the phone is working well, make a nandroid backup so you have a good restore point.
Whenever it comes around, try the next update without wiping - either it'll work fine & life is great, or something will be screwy & you'll need to wipe clean and flash from a fresh state anyway (or restore your backup state).

fastboot -w does the same as wiping data and cache in recovery.

For the best results, when you want to flash a new ROM you should always perform a full wipe in fastboot per the following to make sure you will avoid any unforeseen complications:
reboot to recovery
wipe Dalvik
reboot to fastboot
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase webtop
fastboot erase preinstall
fastboot reboot (to recovery)
flash ROM
reboot
If you are updating an exisiting ROM, then you would normally just reboot to recovery, wipe Dalvik and cache, then flash the update unless the dev has instructed otherwise in the ROM's thread.
You should ALWAYS do a nandroid backup of your current ROM through recovery prior to wiping and flashing anything. Much easier to restore to a previous state than have to set-up completely from scratch again if something goes wrong.

and I knew "fastboot -w" did the same data/cache wipe as in CWM, something something placebo effect can never be too sure. Wouldn't feel right if I didn't do it anyway.
Now, I never erased the webtop when I started flashing roms -- I only did the 2.3.6 webtop fruitcake because it was an update compared to my original one. Granted, I stuck with blur roms but it didn't seem to cause any issues. I assume if I were to switch to a CM-based rom, it could cause glitches if I don't erase the webtop partition?

I always do a CWM backup and then a factory reset, wipe the dalvik cache and then flash the new ROM and any add-ons or kernels. Don't forget to wipe your battery stats/calibrate your battery. (I turn off my phone, charge it to 100%, wait about 15 minutes to be sure and boot into recovery to wipe the battery stats)

Then the ROM installs with aroma which loads up a GUI that let's you choose what you want. Can choose apps installed clock location how many widgets you show at the top what kernel you run etc. Literally flash the zip and you'll understand.

If youre using TWRP click wipe, then factory reset, swipe to do so, then cache same way, then dalvik.
To flash rom click the install tab, find the rom, make sure you tell it to look at the internal or external at the top and find the rom, then swipe to flash it
sidenote: factory reset clears data, which is what most people do. system wipe actually clears out the partition where the rom is, in other words the phone will not reboot until youve flashed a rom to it

Put the ROM on your phone and go to the install section of your recovery (You must boot into recovery by holding power, home, and volume up while turning on your phone) and flash it from there.

My phone is now unlocked + jailbroken after following instructions from CASUAL. No issues.
When u say put the rom in your phone. U mean my SD card? Per littleguevara's post:

Hi, I installed CWM custom recovery, and took several backups. I wanted to check that the backups worked so I tried to restore them. This just made my phone not boot (it sticks at the second screen which says "Samsung GT-i5500". (I can recover from this by re-flashing the stock ROM, but this still leaves me with some useless backups.)
Is there some way I can try to debug to see where it is going wrong? I have tried to use ADB logcat (from the android SDK) but it doesnt report anything ("still waiting for device").
I dont get any errors reported during the backup or the restore.
What I used...
Odin 4.28
Custom recovery: ClockworkMod-Galaxy5-v0.5.tar (When it runs it reports that it is version v4.0.1.5)
Closed down Keis.
Leave Odin controls at defaults and just add the OPS file and the above file for 'one package'
When doing restore I have run, from the recovery menu: clear cache, data reset, clear dalvik cache.
and then select the restore option
I have a samsung galaxy 5500
when restoring stock only restore data then wipe dalvik and cache.

I was wondering how much this would restore. Will it do everything that would have happened if restore was working - will it preserve unlocked phone and rooted phone etc?
