[Q] Program to clean SD (int/ext) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there....
After hundreds of program installed on sd cards, after hundreds of rom, i have my SD full of unused S**t.
Now its time to clean up, but i dont know how to recognize unnecessaries folder.
I have search on market and forum but with no luck.
Can someone suggest me a program to clean SD from old folder/file/ecc ecc??
ty in advance

Format in Windows .
Format via recovery mounts and storage .
jje

Make a backup of everything to somewhere on your PC and just format the SD card.
If you figure there's something you still need, copy it back from the PC and dump the rest.
// EDIT
jje is haunting me, he always posts while I type today xD

maybe i was not clear...
i know how to format a SD i need a program to clear the unused file and folder, keep untouched the used one
(somenthing like Regedit Cleaner).
Ty for help

You could try
market.android.com/details?id=eu.thedarken.sdm&feature=search_result
if you're rooted. had this on my Hero, don't remember if it was any good though

Works like charm... Ty vm.

Why does my phone say sd card damaged

Plug ur phone to a computer if it detects ur sd card format using windows utility if it dont detect then u should use third-party software like acronis disk director....it's not free but it has worked for me in the past..good luck

I had this happen to me before on cm7. I reformatted it in windows (not quick format but full) and it seemed to work. But a few days later I got the SD damaged alert again. After playing this game about 3 times I decided to try SD formatter 3.0 to wipe the card and then I just booted into recovery and formatted it (seeing as it was wiped clean already) and it worked like a charm. SD formatter is free so I'd suggest giving it a try.
Good luck!

When you get this message its actually referring to your external sd(emmc).Don't format because It'll format your internal sd card which really sucks if you apps and music, etc.Try opening your ex-sd (emmc)on root explorer on your phone if you can. There's corrupt info on it I'm almost sure and wipe file that the has time stamps from like the year 1969.If you can't then use a microSD adapter and use your computer.Hope this helps.

Eh, I had this happen and formatted..it did my external sd card not the internal.
I've also never used CM7 or any other GB rom so i think it might have something to do with the SD card read ahead scripts that most ROMs are using nowadays.

[Q] Completely Clean Flash?

I'm wondering if anyone can walk me through completely cleaning out my phone before re-flashing Crazy 8. I read somewhere that you can format your internal and external sd cards to really clean things up. I've been having major slow downs and fc's and I want to try this to see if it helps. MY question is, do you format these cards and then go back to stock with ODIN or the other way around? Any tips would be most appreciated.
move critical stuff to pc
format internal/external
power down
odin to jfd
use the update.zip in my noob guide that lets you boot straight to cwr
flash rom
move any critical items back (ie titanium backup folder if you want your apps)

You format each drive through your pc or directly through the phone?

Awesome s15! Thanks so much. I will try this when I get home later. My internet has been down all day at work or I would've thanked you sooner!
Matty: I think you unmount the cards and then format them through the phone but I'll find out more later when I try it out.
You can format your internal/external SD card using either your phone or the computer. However, I think you should better use your phone to avoid any incompatibility issue.

Just boot into recovery, select mounts and storage. There is a format SD and format extSD choice. Always make sure you've removed anything critical to your PC first.

YAY! Formatting both SD Cards worked a charm. My phone is very speedy now and not having all the weird random re-boots and FC's! I can't buy anything from the market though, again, this is such a weird problem and I seem to be the only one having it.

Thanks guys for the above info, my next question is whats the best way to put "update.zip" file on to pnone SD card after downloading on to PC:
Is it best to:
Copy and paste file from PC to SD card with phone attached to PC using USB cable.
or
Move file to SD card using same set up as above.
or
Use a SD card adaptor fitted to PC USB and move or copy file to phone SD card fitted to adaptor.
Sorry for the above silly questions.

Sorry for last silly questions, this is what I have done so far.
Fitted cable from phone to PC USB
SD files seen ok on pc, moved "update.zip" file from PC to phone SD card and disconnected phone from PC.
Powered up phone using: volume+home+power buttons.
Used volume up/down to select .zip file pressed home to install.
Rebooted phone and checked for "superuser icon" it was there so looks like my phone is rooted.
Downloaded and installed on phone "Link2SD" and it worked ok I could open all options, but still to partition my SD card, thats my next task.
I have downloaded "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition v7.6" and installed on my PC ready to partition my SD card I have read a few posts here and other web sites to try and understand what format is best for my Phones SD card.
What is the best format to use: ext2 or ext3 ??
What is the best way to backup/reinstall apps that are on my SD card at the moment ??

This is where I get a wee bit confused regarding formating you suggested ext3 but when you read the information for link2sd it says to format both partitions as FAT32 they say that ext2/ext3 may not work on all phones but FAT32 works on all, have I read this correctly ?
I downloaded "Titanium app" free edition and installed on my phone it runs fine after install but can you use this app to backup apps thats on the SD card to PC ?
At the moment I can't see an option to do this, have I missed somthing?

1. Detecting ext3/4 depends on your kernel. But even if you are on stock 5830i firmware & kernel, link2sd will detect sd-ext even if it is ext2 format. If you are on Rafael Kernel, you can format sd-ext on ext3 or ext4. I recommended ext3, coz most people do that, and so far ext3 is reported to perform best without stressing much life out of your SD Card. I haven't ever tried formating sd-ext in fat32 or heard of someone doing that. So can't say if Fat32 is better than the ext file system or the other way around
2. You'll have to manually copy the backup you made in the "sdcard/titaniumbackup" folder in your SD card to Your PC. Whenever you want to restore that backup, simply put it back in same directory in SD card and run titanium restore process

You are welcome and good luck with ur plans ... One little correction in your post. As i explained earlier that default kernel will only recognize ext2. so format sd-ext in ext2 format to get it detected in link2sd on default firmware. ext3/ext4 is only detectable in custom kernel

Must have misunderstood, I shall use ext2 to format sd-ext.
I may not bother just now doing a backup of old 2gb SD card because the apps I have on there I can re-download when I have set up the new card so I may just delete these apps to get them of the system and start fresh, there not important apps anyway.
Sorry but I meant to ask what would be the best sizes for each partition when I format the 16gb SD card ?
Let me know what you think.

Presuming that you've managed to root and everything else ran smoothly, if you're still looking to remove some of that bloatware permanently, you can install es explorer and do that.

No problems except may b eventually low space issue on ur primary partition. Because sd-ext will not ever take 4gb space i guess so extra storage space may be wasted

Yes saeed14i Understand what your saying but having 10gb or so on first partition will be ok in my situation as I will only be using for pictures etc and I am one of these guys that uploads pics to PC and does a clean up on a regular basis.
So this is how it stands now, Backed up my apps on the old SD card using "Wondershare MobileGo for Android" ready to reinstall on to 2nd partition of new SD card, formated and created partitions on new SD card using "MiniTool Partition Wizard home edition", I then used "Link2sd" to link apps that were on internal storage, reinstalled backed up apps using "Wondershare" they went straight to internal storage but linked to 2nd partition with no problems.
Note/ I did not link any system apps.
Was a bit confused at first when trying to link apps to 2nd partition as when you open an app in Link2sd it shows a window with info of app and some buttons and I thought you had to use the "move to SD card" but I realised you only use the "create link button", silly me.
As I said above I used "Wondershare MobileGo for Android" to do backup and found it worked well I liked the fact that you dont require your USB cable to attach your phone to PC you can use WiFi and that is what I used and it worked great.
Phone Internal storage before starting was 3.5mb free
After doing all of the above my internal storage is now 118mb free (well worth doing)
I will try and post some pictures at a later date once I get them sortd out.
The whole process of rooting, creating 2nd partition, backing up apps and linking apps to 2nd partition has went well, a big thanks to you saeed14i and other members who posted on this thread. I was very aprehensive before I satarted but being on xda has helped a lot.

Need to FORMAT SD card

I already have apps on my SD card that I had moved over in the past but any other apps I move now become corrupted and useless. I'm hoping that formating the card will fix this issue. Can I just copy all contents from the card over to my pc then copy them back on after the format? Should everything work correctly? I have 6gigs of spotify music and other big data files. Hope someone answers Thanks!

I'm on lollipop with klte root. Man I messed up. I transfered all the contents from my sd over to my pc to format it and when I switched everything back over the folders came up as all empty. And I can't seem to recreate a folder called .android_secure. My storage info shows that about 9gigs of space are being used on the sd but the folders show nothing. 6gigs were of pure spotify offline music. This is not a good day. Tons of pics were there too.

I have done the same. In MM was concerned that my SD data would be gone. Made the transfer to the PC of everything. After seeing what MM did to my SD, I formatted the SD again and transferred from the PC to the SD and all was fine. If you want that info back and it is still on the PC, then just do the same. In my case after the format, all was as before.
I lost everything on the card. Dammit. I want to just do a complete hard reset of my phone. If I do a backup with kies will I be able to add all my apps and settings back on my phone afterwards with a recovery of the backup?

I recommend using Kies and Another Backup Solution as I've had problems with Kies backups in the past, causing me to lose saved texts, contacts, memos, settings, etc.
I personally recommend using Helium backup from ClockworkMod, a quick search through google play should get it for ya.
Happy resetting! :3
EDIT: Just realized this thread is old... you've probably already reset the phone. Sorry I didn't pay attention to the date stamp..
It's almost scary that you would have responded to this thread right now. I am going through the exact same mess again. I tried applying a fix to make the external card detectable by other apps which were not detecting it. Well after doing that none of my apps or data on the card show up or work. The files are there if I explore root folder though. How do I regain the pathway to the card? Through my USB on pc it does not show the external but it does if I use sd card reader with the sd card by itself. Last time I copied everything from the card to my pc then formatted. It all became a senseless mess when I tried returning everything to the card. Lost everything. I tried backing up with kies before but it did not give option to backup sd card. Please help is an understatement. I just checked the sd card for errors using Windows tools but no errors popped up.

The reason for this occurrence (as well as how to fix it) depend on how the fix was applied.
Please describe the nature of the fix as specifically as you can. Things like where you found it, what it does, how you installed it, as well as if this is the same SD card, will help the most.
Edit: if you could also include the file system that's on the card that would be great too.
Thank you for responding. I'm not sure what the file system on the card would be but I've attached a screenshot of what I did. The name of the app is there.

Well I found the app in question in the play store, and was unable to track down exactly what it does, so we can't get anything out of that.
To get the file system that's on the card all you have to do is put it in a Windows PC and look at the drive properties.
At this point the best thing to do would be to back up everything on the card to a computer.
