We've all seen this done with various devices before here on XDA...iPhone 2G being the most popular for signing up Data packages.
What do you think of an Photon HD Dock rental service for helping users Root their Photon
(until we don't need to use the dock to Root).
At $130 the Dock is hardly what you'd call affordable...Moto NEEDS to address this!
I'm proposing a service in which I (or other participating members) will rent usage of the Dock (and cables of course) at a minimal fee for a certain amount of days.
As with other transactions of this type there will be a deposit required, which will be refunded, less the rental amount, upon the unit's return.
Payments to be handled strictly by PayPal, for everyone's protection. Shipping will be the responsibility of the renter.
A fee structure might look something like this:
(Rental periods would not include time in transit)
3 Day Rental - $10
7 Day Rental - $20
Paypal deposit $100 - To be refunded, less rental fee and shipping.
Shipping (ConUS) - $6 Priority USPS each way
So on average, cost would figure out to be $22 for 3 Days / $32 for 7 Days
Anywho...that's the general idea. What do you think?
**I'll most likely be offering 2 Docks out for rent to begin with**
~ In addition to voting...please comment with thoughts ~
The Dock is actually $99 from Sprint. I think you can still get the 25% off on 2 accessories for Premier Members.
They system you put up is not bad. I am sure you will get some hits.
I think your idea is good though and will help people get root
I would help with my dock as well. Just an FYI, like said above, if ur a premier customer u can get 25% off if u buy 2 items. So I bought the dock and the car dock and it came out to like $114! So I thought that was a pretty good deal.
Good idea.
However, I may just buy the dock, use it for root, and then return it and wait till cheaper option comes out.

This!
I might go out and buy the dock at the Sprint store this weekend, root it, then return it on Monday .
Bandage this is a really really god idea lol.. I currently have an EVO but have been seriously looking at getting the Photon for the past couple days.. Lokifish Marz really spiked my interest in the phone after giving reasons he chose the Photon over the Evo 3D... I have a two-year agreement up and could sell my EVO fast to pay for the phone
I've been somewhat lurking this thread since it came out lol.. Really looks promising..
Bandage, correct me if I'm wrong, but you have (or had) an OG EVO right?
How does the Photon compare in your opinion? Every single review I have read has been amazing lol
Thanks for any feedback guys
I am interested in paying for the whole process to be done. Anyone live in the Cleveland, Ohio area?

Yeah had 2 OG Evo's and the 3D. Wife still rockin her Evo, so I can still flash to my hearts content! No comparison for me tho. IMO Photon blows it away. Can't wait to flash some goodness on this device!
I won't be pursuing a rental service...not enough demand for it yet. Hopefully we'll have another Root path available to us in the near future. Thanks to all who shared their input.
I'm thinking the easiest route for most of us now is to purchase the dock, then return it once we've rooted.
You know, as a similar idea, we could turn this into a localized "rental/help a bro out" thing. For example, I'm in the Chicagoland area, will be pulling the trigger on a P4G & dock tonight, and would not mind meeting up with locals who want to root their phones.
Thoughts?
Agreed...I'd be willing to do the same in Tulsa

So im looking to upgrade from my Evo 4g to a Evo 3D the only problem is i dont quite know what would be best. I got my Evo 4G around october and its in really good conditions since i have had it on my Otterbox defender case most of the time. Is there a way that I can trade the OG Evo and get the Evo 3D? I can only spend about $100 on the Evo 3D. What would be my best choice?

If you are an account holder, you can upgrade your phone once per year.
Just mention option "one year account holder upgrade override" (or something like that-they would know). At the sprint's service desk they may not advertise it, coz some sprint reps are so damn lazy or just an a-ho-s. Actually I just upgraded my Evo 4G for Evo 3D at the kiosk in Ridgedale Mall (MN) location. I paid including taxes ~$54 for new 3D. The option is that you can trade-in your old Evo 4G for $150 instantly. Sprint runs this on for some time - this week 06/25/2011 at least, so... Also if you have 2 (two) devices on the account then upgrade one or add one to yours. I have 3 phones on $129/mo plan and can upgrade at least one device every year. You can upgrade one of "N" of your devices at once and swap numbers at the spot if you need to.
The strategy here is pretty straightforward:
The Sprint Buyback plan should buy your Evo 4g for $150 (not bad!): see here: https://secure2.sprintbuyback.com/consumer/app/CartPage/
The harder part will be convincing Sprint to give you at LEAST the 1-year renewal price if you buy the 3D. If you've been with Sprint for a long time, and especially if you're with Sprint Premiere, there might be some wiggle room for you here.
Basically, call in to customer service repeatedly until someone decides to help you. What you want is for someone to offer you a service credit.
One more option: see if you qualify for any discounts on your plan: I'm a USAA member (not an employee, just a cardholder!) and I get 15% off my whole bill. That difference will make the 3D pay for itself pretty soon....

Thanks for the great reply! I guess the only problem im gonna have is convincing the Sprint to give me the 1year renewal early since ive been with them for way less than a year. Maybe they will give me some mercy since everything has been paid on time. Also do i have to unroot my phone when i give it to them?

I unrooted before trading mine in, the link I followed was here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
Ya, don't forget to unroot if you trade in!
If you've been with them less than a year..then your best option is to find a friend who loves your 4G and is willing to take over your contract--then you can walk in and pay $200 for a new 3D on a brand new account.
If you pay full price - $150 trade in credit you're still looking at $425, ouch...
Another option (what I did): have any friends you'd be willing to split a plan with? They can be added as a line of service (most likely $20/month +$10/month for data) and then you can swap the two phones, and your friend will have the 4G.
Finally, keep your eyes peeled for if and when the SAVE50 rebate becomes usable again. It seems to come and go (probably only usable on a new line of service tho).
Don't trade in your phone. It will sell in a day on Craigslist at 225 no problem. Why give away that extra 75 dollars to sprint. Usually its hard to get the full upgrade unless you have been with them for a year. Once you get the 75 dollar credit one phone call should give you a full upgrade.

amazon always does this type of stuff. i think its new sprint customers only though, maybe not though.
Yeah.....just for new customers or adding a line, not for upgrades.
I was a new customer and I preordered it on the 8th, you guys think I will get a 30 dollar credit if I call them? I dont know if they do that on the phones, they have been pretty nice to me so I might give it a try tomorrow.
I added another line at the Shack...just my luck! But my first thought when I hear price drop is it's losing its luster so to speak. I probably over-reacted though.

Nah Amazon always have lowest prices. Retail stores can't compete and won't price match Amazon. I still buy from best buy and price match radioshack or lowest retail I can find the Geek Squad protection plan is second to none no deductible $10 a month and brand new replacement even from water damage. So you may save now but lose out on money later.

I actually looked at the details of their plan, there is no where it says you get a straight replacement, they will send it in for repairs if that is necessary. I didn't see anywhere where it says you get a direct replacement. Although it is likely they will replace it, I really hate how every employee at best buy tells you something different, last time I tried to exhange a phone wher gps would never lock and I was within thirty days, one person tried to tell me that is how it is suppose to be. Tried to make a fool out of me and after I talked to the third person, fourth person actually decided to replace it for me.
The offer is $149, in my area at least. And ya, only for new customers. The wirefly friends and family was selling for the same price and was upgrade friendly, for those still looking.
EDIT: I guess I should've re-searched it up. The current price is up to $179- wirefly(DOT)com/eCommerce/SpecialOffer.aspx?cid=26987_584f5c9aca934f7b941e32743e8f2eff

if you kept the packaging and traded it in at radio shack and it was in excellent condition as was mine, the evo 4 got you 158 dollars off on a 3d. so my final in store cost including them incorrectly charging me 12 bucks tax on the original 199.99 instead of the tax on 41 dollars was 54 bucks and some change. beat that
It will be 6-12 months before price drops in my opinion...
These things aren't doing bad yet. My blog has had 3x more hits on the Evo 3D post I made than any other post since Christmas. My local Sprint store's take was "On release day we didn't have the line like we did when the Evo 4G came out", but when I asked for more details it turns out they sold more Evo3Ds than 4Gs (which ran out) the first day, and have had a steady flow of Evo 3D buyers each day since then as reviews have come out. Sprint underestimated the demand for the 4G, and has made sure they have a ready supply of the 3D.

I just purchased a Photon through Craigslist (on Black Friday) and activated it on my current line. The phone is a few weeks old and came with the original box and everything (the charger & cable had not even been used). I am traveling abroad for 6 weeks and will be moving around a lot and would like to buy some protection/insurance for the Photon.
I have searched through XDA for information about Sprint TEP and for the most part, it seems users think its beneficial to buy TEP since it covers repairs, replacements, lost and/or stolen phones.
Since I don't have a purchase receipt, can I still purchase TEP on my line for the Photon? The phone is practically brand-new but I have never had TEP before.
I want to cover all my bases before I talk to them directly.
The other coverage I am considering is Square Trade which has built a sterling reputation by providing great warranties with inexpensive prices. I have a 35% off coupon which I can use, so the Photon can be protected for 2 years for $80. But it doesn't cover theft or loss. Plus everything has to be mailed in.
So there are advantages & disadvantages for both;
Any Photon users care to chime in about their experiences?
Or any other comments, suggestions, do's & don'ts?
Thanks in advance.
Sprint has the tep at 7 bucks a month you should be able to add it since you just bought it. I know it covers theft and water damage but The deductible is 100-150 bucks I think. Better then having nothing and if u mod like everyone on xda, that should give u some cushion in case it goes haywire.(usually if u play dumb they may replace it for free) With sprints tep you can just go to a corporate sprint store w/ repair and can have it back same day usually unlike square which will take a week or two....

I was leaning towards TEP for the same reasons.
I also overlooked the fact that a receipt needs to be filed with ST for confirmation, which I won't be able to do.

Its sort of a long story and i definitely don't feel like typing it all from my phone lol. Plus I'm watching the Texans game
In a nutshell it had something to do with my laptop and the refused to repair it over some BS. To be honest square trade warranties are stupid. Why should I pay someone few hundred dollars on top my purchase to promise me they'll fix/repair my device if something goes wrong etc. The OEM should repair most issues within the first year! Technology becomes obsolete like every 6-8 months anyways! It just doesn't make sense to me. Only time ill buy extended warranties is if i purchase a used car. Other than that I'm not giving a company my money up front because within a year I'd probably have another product! Yeah they can cover theft etc but imo its still not worth it.
Thanks for the comments.
I'm definitely signing up with TEP.

Me too!
Well, it will be 10 years for me on Dec. 28.
Had a simple, talk-only plan for 9 years; upgraded to the smartphone plan with the Evo in Jan.
And now, before I can be a Gold Premier customer, they take it all away.
I guess customer loyalty doesn't count for anything, anymore.
Well, I just wanted to chime in. if you look back at my recent post, TEP (Asurion) just delivered my phone Saturday. I will not jock them but...........Yea I will, give them the $8.00 a month TRUST ME!!! And unlike AT&T, I did not get a referb unit, I got a brand new Photon stright from the factory floor, already programmed with Sprint Service, USB and Charger, Battery. All I had to do was hit the power button and sign into Google. I was making calls 3 minutes after I opened the box!!
I was stupid for losing my phone, TEP took care of me. ($100.00 and I got it before noon the following day!!! If I recall, package was from Tenn.? Oh Well, I got it in PA the next day!)

Yeah, I already signed up....8 bucks a month.
I only want this for the duration of my trip (6-8 weeks); I might cancel afterward.
Total for a year is $96 plus $100 deductible, totals to $200. The Photon goes for about $250 on (my local) CL. Unless the instrument is problematic, I personally don't see the need for me to have TEP.
But yeah, brand-new replacement for a lost handset is great.
The way I caught AT&T was I had to remove battery to put in my card, there was a little yellow round sticker with an "R" on it, thats now what I was paying for. It took a little moaning and hollering................Again, I have nothing but love for Sprint TEP.
I work in IT. years ago a friend told me "we dont get paid for what we do, we get paid for what we know. We are an insurance policy, no one cares as long as the lights are flashing green, we work when it flashes red!" This has stuck with me for years.
TEP and that $8.00 gives me a piece of mind. When I got my EVO August 2010 (or was it July?), anyway, it cost me over $600.00 to walk out of the store with what I wanted. Photon cost me over $700.00 (Phone, new card, GhostArmour)
BTW: If you lose your phone in Sweden, your SOL anyway. Most (or AT&T anyway) will not ship internationally. I had to send e-mail to my mother (she will not answer blocked calls) with password to have AT&T cut it off. Insurance would not ship to her, HTC Fuze got shipped to my home in PA, my mother is in Ohio. My daughter came from Md, for phone, delivered it to my job, Operations sent it with like 10 tapes!
Bottom line, $8.00 is nothing!
Ran into some hard times, and I need to sell my TFP
Bought it from GameStop and they don't return cash. The dock and tablet
are in great condition. Here's the eBay link. No lightbleed, wifi works great, bluetooth is fine also, and is on Android ICS 4.0. Like I said, having a baby so need the money lol.,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/130672580434?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649
Android 3.2 Honeycomb? Have you not updated it to 4.0.3 ICS?
I'd change your posting to include ICS - may be a little more tempting to those not fully aware of the TFP...
Also mention the keyboard dock extends the battery life by upto 4hrs and can be used to read SD cards and USB memory sticks and HDD's etc
Good luck with the sale and your new baby

Dont really have a recommendation. Just wondering if you had some extras that would allow you to charge $25 over new retail.
A price I would recommend? Lets look at some facts that you may or may not find relevant.
When a car is driven off the lot, you can't sell it for the $60,000 you bought it for. At most you could get for it by selling it is $48,000 to $54,000.
You've 'driven' your 'car' off the lot when you removed the vacuum wrap seal on both boxes. The most I would spend on the tablet is about $425-$450 and $90-$100 for the dock. So the total price I would pay would be $515 to $550.
There still might not be a lot of stock available, but it is definitely improving fast. If they hadn't of ramped up production I would have said you might have gotten your $650 you paid for back out of it, but not now.

I wouldn't exactly call that a fact... I sell cars and while what you said in theory makes sense. It isn't entirely true..
None the less, an item is worth what someone will buy it for. Look at finished listings on Ebay and aim for the highest one. The Prime with dock shouldn't be hard to find in most areas but I had to search a little to find mine. Ebay touches everyone... Someone will spend the money. Worst case scenario you can always meet in the middle but you always, always start high, pending your motivation to sell anyway.
I wouldn't lower the price unless you need the money fast. People are stupid, I've sold many things on Craigslist above retail price. They think they are getting a deal on CL.

But glws nonetheless...sucks when you have to sell their own stuff just to make it by. Damn you ECONOMY!

houses typically go up in price but ya you are right. i saw a tfp 32gb + dock + case for $550 on craigslist here in DC.
I'm in Houston (Sugar Land) and I think I've seen your ad.
here's my take on the price.
1: it's a tablet and 85% of people out there wouldn't think of our tablet as "the tablet" to get especially the iPad3 just came out. everyone will be looking for an iPad so if I were you on CL, add some meta words to it to get people's attention.
2: because we don't own a pedestrian tablet, most people wouldn't plunk all that cash for something they don't know. Doing a search for our tablet doesn't come back too favorably either; not that it's a bad tablet but with the issues that the tablet has, even my parents knows about it and they're super AARP members. I wouldn't put "Firm" in your CL ad. As an active CL user (both back in NYC and now Houston), anytime anyone put in the word "FIRM", I click the back button. The whole "charm" with CL is the ability to, for a lack of a better word: haggle.
3: If you think cars depreciate fast, have you looked at technology? Yeah, the price fluctuates up and down (like a Prius when it first came out) but overall, they only head in one direction once leaving store shelves: down. To exasperate the bad situation are the "next model" people. These are the "next model" waiters and will look at the $600 now and get X or $600 next month and get Y which is greater than X. Speaking from experience, I waited almost 6 months for the Prime. I was going to pull the trigger and get a TF101 and REALLY needed something since my laptop screen died (thank god for the stupid $120 extended warranty from Dell) but I still waited after hearing about the Prime coming out Q3/Q4 of 2011.
Basic marketing P's:
People
Price
Promotion
Placement
People: you're selling an item that majority of people know nothing about. Not like Verizon or AT&T Wireless are pushing it like the Galaxy Tab. Your audience is limited.
Price: well, $600 is big coin for economic times like this for most people. Not suggesting you give it away but do set a price that people can't say no to or add OBO to get more bites; I don't know how much interest has been stirred on your CL listing so I can't say if your price is good but for me, it's on the high side.
Promotion: well, you got it on ebay and CL and now here but the price you're selling it at doesn't help the promotion.
Placement: You're in Sugar Land? I'm in Sugar Land as well and it's not a bad place to sell high end electronics but you have to take in consideration the people who are well off in Sugar Land are also educated or are willing to educate themselves on items they are buying.
Good luck on the sale and as someone once said: I'd rather be lucky than good.
Thanks

Thank You all for your supprt. Ended up selling it for $575. MODs please close this thread.
Glad you sold it, good luck with your hard times
Anyway...
Seems that just in the last hour or so, BestBuy has put up this page:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HTC+-+E...93&st=htc evo 4g lte&cp=1&lp=1&contract_desc=
Looks like I can get to bestbuy, use my bestbuy card, and pre-order after all. It was beginning to seem that Bestbuy was not doing pre-orders.
Good news good news!
----- EDIT:
See this user's post concerning best buy EVO LTE offers.

I was just about to order from best buy, but I did a web chat with CSR and asked about 50$ gift card. He said that's only in-store. That's fine with me, as I only shop brick and mortar, but thought others may wanna know.

that regular price seems a bit steep. hopefully i can get the discount
what benefits are there to pre ordering with Best Buy? based from past experience, it assures you a phone at launch, but for the same price wouldn't you just pre order with Sprint and get it a couple days earlier(potentially)? unless you have a gift card or something
I know with the OG Evo and pre ordering thru radio shack, the nice part was radio shack processed the 100$ rebate in-store. I didn't have to mail the rebate in and wait 2mo for it in the mail. But, that may not be relevant anymore, as it appears the rebate is pre-processed with online sales.
That said, waiting for rebate in mail can be good, too. With my diamond, I got a rebate for 400 something dollars. Somehow the rebate center thought it was for 4 devices. Nice surprise in the mail, that's for sure.

I just got back from pre-ordering mine at my local best buy. I just had to pay $50, sort of a down payment but I got the $50 gift card. On the receipt it says the estimated date to pick up is May 18th but he said it could change.

Hate to say it, but you got ripped off my friend. Or maybe not. For this launch, BB doesn't require the downpayment (at least they didn't for me or anyone else I talked to - might be a regional thing though). All BB preorders get a $50 gift card without the downpayment, which you'll recieve when you purchase the phone. This gift card can then be used towards the cost of the phone - bringing the cost of the phone down to $150 if preordered at BB. Having said that, hopefully you'll still revive the extra $50 gift card when you go in to buy the phone.
Keep things on topic no Flame Wars
i got back from bestbuy.
NO MONEY was given.
they asked if im upgrading, zip, email, name, and printed out a sheet of paper detailing my reserved phone. they'll email me when its there.
they also give you a printout of available accessories for the phone on release date, otter case, n some other chit.
i guess i'll pay for it when it gets there, they said the gift card is given if you trade in your EVO. i was like, nahh. i was one of 2 people @ 2pm. (edit, sounds like bestbuys arent on the same page)
i dont think many people are excited about this phone or know about it.
either way, cool with me, saves me money until it arrives.
i wanted to walk out with that asus transformer prime/or t300
theyre speculating 18th, friday release too.
Same here. Just walked out of best buy. No money exchanged hands. No gift card. Just a paper reservation. Which has the wrong name in it, I noticed halfway home. A diff line/name/number on my family plan. Need to get this sorted out. They were selling Evo 4gs for 99$. I was surprised to see that. Almost got one for my mom for mothers day. But I'm thinking galaxy nexus for her. That way if Evo never gets flash friendly, I'll just trade her phones lol

Well if that's the case, I didn't get screwed over. I just bought myself a gift card. Which I don't really see the point in but at least I didn't have to pay for the whole phone right there.
I also got the "no gift card, no money exchanged" version of the pre-order at BB.
Do I have to get insurance with BB if I want insurance, or can I still get it elsewhere? Any suggestions?

the original evo 4g release at best buy was a joke.
sprint systems were bogged making activation an hourly issue, bestbuy was allowing later numbered people skip.
i hope this time around its a little more smooth.

mine was down payment. Paid $50 for a giftcard which I could then use to pay down the phone. Wasn't until recently that I read that you also get another $50 giftcard upon activation of the phone. I don't see it as a ripoff though, $50 is pocket change to me.

That's not a very flattering statement. But regardless, I would love some of your pocket change if it is so insignificant to you. Most people would have their day made if they found $50 on the street.
Similar experience at BB. Info given at 6 pm, got my paper, no money exchanged. 2nd in line (woman next to me was 1st), Will receive e-mail when it's in. Will cost 50$ to get the phone assuming im trading in my Evo. Through Sprint it would have cost me around 130$ or more depending on how much value the Evo loses over the next few days. No brainer there.

preorded today instore at best buy
no deposit (per the email they looked at in the system)
filled out paperwork just like i would on a normal upgrade
got confirmation (email and physical)
left my phone number and time i expected to pick it up (assuming it stays on 5/18 launch)
I didn't ask about $50 wireless freedom or $50 preorder, but that right there should drive price to $100, then add in $10 Google Wallet and possibly $50+ in trade in.
well done

How's that not flattering? Used to be a time when nice cellular phones weren't owned by everyone. I don't necessarily miss that. People have their priorities so far out of whack, it is absurd. If $50 is a lot of money to someone maybe they shouldn't be dropping $4000+ a year on cellular services and its accompanying toys.
Hell I commented on a post earlier about a guy taking no interest financing for 18 months on a sub $500 tablet. A lot of what is wrong with the current economy in the US. People living beyond their means. Feeling entitled. Always having to get the latest and greatest. Saddens me
I bought 2 for $250 shipped no tax. Considered paying for express shipping, but that would have negated my good deal by $40.

I completely agree with your comments about living our of their means. I also agree that this country is messed up that way. I am a teacher in a high school just outside of Chicago, and while 80% of my students are on free or reduced lunch, 100% of them own a cell phone (and about 80% are smartphones from my estimation). I find this to be both disturbing and indicative of our messed up system.
Anyway, I just didn't feel that flaunting the insignificance of x dollar amount was real classy. Maybe it was to make a larger point, to me it came off as very smug. I don't care how rich you are, saving $50 if the option is present should mean something to you, in my opinion.
