new phone but question about root - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my tb the back in may and used the 1 click root program... Today I broke my phone and insurance will be sending me a new phone in the next day or so. My question is, is that if they send me a new phone with the new mr2 update can i still use the same method to root? or is there a new way to root with the new updates?

I'm wondering the same thing...my new phone comes in tomorrow

i got mine 2 weeka ago replacing one with water damage. i didnt use the one click method tho but im pretty sure it wasnt mr2. i think the phone is stocked then when u turn it on it will ask to update.

I strongly encourage people to be lazy, avoid knowledge at all cost, and ask questions that have been answered repeatedly. So yes, I'm sure it may or may not work.

To root or not to root,

Well with the new HTCDev unlocker tool. I am not so sure i want to root my phone just yet. From the videos i have watched you have to be connected to the net and have to receive a token during the root process. Could this possibly be a method that can void your warranty without a workaround? Would it be smarter to wait for a Dev community method?
I only ask this because, well i have the rooting/flashing itch. I am still funbling around with my phone and getting to know it. Yes people, i am one of those guys, the one who really misses the 4th menu button. So would it really be worth flashing while I am still getting used to the phone. Don't get me wrong the phone rocks even with 3 buttons, but is it worth rooting right away via the HTC Unlocker?
From what I understand, any root method will void your warranty. I have never had an issue getting a rooted phone replaced at Sprint. I always flashed a stock rom before taking it in.
Any root will void a warranty, HTC just has a way to track it with HTCdev. A community method just makes it easier to get away with..

Thx... appreciate the response, its exactly what was on my mind... Except my missing menu button..
Purchase insurance on your phone and you shouldn't have to worry about your warranty. I had my original Evo replaced after it had an unfortunate collision with a wall and the screen no longer worked. I took it into the Sprint store to try and get it repaired, but they told me they couldn't and to file a claim online. The next day, I had a 3D in my hands. My 4G was rooted with S-OFF, but of course they couldn't tell since the screen didn't work.
I am going to hold off for a while on Rooting. I have a feeling there will be a few OTA updates to fix minor things and don't want to have to go back and forth to get updates. I was 100% set on rooting until I found out that foxfi works out of the box! no need (for now) for me to root!
How did you install Foxfi? It says the app is not compatible with my 4G LTE and shows the phone greyed out.

Why would you have to go back and forth? Someone always releases a rooted stock rom within hours of it's release by HTC, all you would do is either flash that or wait for the developer of your rom to update to the new OTA. As for OTA's, if and when we have a root and s-off method it's not only possible but likely that you wouldn't be able to use it if you updated your phone. Within weeks of the s-off on the EVO 3D there was an OTA patching it. I haven't rooted yet but I wouldn't accept any OTA's just in case. I still may return my phone due to data issues.

You could still get the update even while rooted.
I'll probably give it 2 weeks to make sure the hardware is okay.
Need to root for some privacy apps.
I can hear Pandora/Facebook/Twitter sucking my contacts, web history, and phone number without my permission as we speak.
I used the HTC unlock method on my 3D and didn't hesitate to do it on my new Evo LTE. It was well worth it.
For what it's worth, I had to bring my 3D in to sprint to have the touch screen replaced when it randomly went bad and they never said anything about my phone having an unlocked bootloader... They don't care.

You have to go directly to foxfi to get the APK a google search will bring you there. It is not in the market. It works fine on my phone, now I wait for second round LTE then I can get better speeds.
Edit: found this, may help.

My og evo was rooted and I was very flash happy with it. But the last 6 months I had it I actually got sick of flashing (gasp). I think the constant need to re setup my phone just got old. As of now I have no plans of rooting it. I like it the way it is. I've gone "iphoney" and just want it to work lol.

Rooted RAZR's not getting OTA?

Here is a conversation I had over at Motorola Live Chat. Looks like If you rooted your phone your not going to get the ICS update over the air
Denz: Hi, my name is Denz. How may I help you?
ME: Oh hi
ME: I want to know what the problem is with the ICS OTA for RAZR
ME: Why havn't I recieved it?
Denz: We apologize for the inconvenience. Please allow me to assist you with that.
Denz: May I know your location?
ME: Phoenix
Denz: Please provide the serial number: Go to Settings, About Phone, Status, get the IMEI.
ME: serial number of my phone?
Denz: Yes.
ME: ***********
Denz: I will need to check some performance related information from your device will that be okay?
ME: what are you checking?
ME: Data speeds?
Denz: I will need to check the eligibility of your phone for ICS
ME: oh ok
Denz: Thanks. One moment.
Denz: Has the software been modified?
ME: Software?
Denz: The operating system. Have you "rooted" or downloaded a 3rd party OS/software/
ME: Im not very techie what do you mean?
ME: Oh I ley my brother root my phone
ME: So I can't get the OYA?
Denz: I see.
Denz: Hold on.
ME: OTA*
Denz: You still have the option the option of sending your device in and paying for a repair evaluation. The flat rate repair fee for rooted devices is currently the same as the Out Of Warranty fee That's $159 plus tax.
ME: Repair what?
ME: My phone works
Denz: Yes, the only way we could get it back to the original version so you can get the ICS update is to send the phone in.
ME: Lol how am i supposed to get phone calls from important ppl?
ME: you guys are funny
ME: Ill ask my bro what i need to do
ME: Thx for the help anyway
Denz: I understand where you're coming from. Prior to the update and since we released the phone, we had
Denz: advised phone users not to root the phone because they may not get future updates.
Denz: I'm sorry but you have the option to send it in.
ME: lol wish i got that advise. ive been getiing system updates
Denz: I mean specifically for ICS update.
ME: Thats fine no problem im sure my brother has a solutuion
Denz: Okay then. Is there anything else you need assistance with?
ME: No you have a nice day sir/ma'am
Denz: If you need any more information get in touch. Thanks from Motorola, bye!
Ignore this !!!!! I received the download and I am still rooted. Well don't ignore the fact that the Moto employee tried to sham me out of 159 bucks also ignore my bad grammer plox!
So if your phone is rooted you may or may not get the OTA ans WILL have to sideload.
It doesn't really matter if you've already side loaded now does it. Don't worry with silly moto. Just do with your phone what you wish and forget their silly nonsense. And I'm with the countless others that have stated in other threads. I believe they have some kind of tracking software that they aren't telling us about. I'm not saying its the same as carrier IQ but I'm sure its something similar.
That's crap I had my phone rooted prior to .181 and I got the ics OTA. Granted I lost root after .181 and I did a factory reset before getting .181. So that shouldn't be the problem.
My wife has a maxx and has never rooted or anything ans she still hasn't gotten ICS

It is ofc bull****.
Well, from what I've been reading... If ur phone is rooted, you cant even side load ICS. So it would make sense that they wouldnt push the ota to a rooted device. I'm sure they have a way of knowing if ur rooted or not..
That being said... Theres always the option to flash back to stock, and wait for the ota, or side load it. I personally chose flashing stock, then side loading. I like fresh installs, especially with an upgrade this size. Less variables = lees chance for errors... but thats just me
Lol well know they have my serial number and the fact that im rooted so ill have to sideload later tonight when i have time. I also may wait a few days just to see how accurate this employees facts are.

that is not true...i used razr utility to reverty back to stock .181 and had re-rooted it....then side loaded the official OTA .211 with razr utility 1.7 .....not a problem since !!!
just one thing i havent figured out is, how do i go back to stock .181 so i can recieve the OTA, like i said, i have had not one issue with sideloading it myself but i would still like to see the actual OTA...it would satisfy me lol
..
I too was wondering. My folks got the OTA yesterday, on non-rooted MAXX's. My MAXX, rooted, has nothing.
Am I out of luck, and will I have to side-load the ICS?
I guess the question is anyone with root not in soak recieve OTA yet?

George: Now I need the system number of the phone just for a documentation purposes, May I have it please?
George: The system version will be Setting > About phone > System Version
Tim Timmons: XXXXXXXXXXX(IEMEI)
George: Thank you
George: I have tried to check this information in my end and I regret to say that we do not have the exact date about when will be release.however the Update is been going on at the moment. .the update will be pushed out by Motorola in batches to all users over a few week time period. So kindly wait for the notification to be send to your phone.
Tim Timmons: 6.12.181.xt912.verizon.en.us
Tim Timmons: But how is it sent - by locale, or what?
Tim Timmons: and how did you check? You asked for version info, and before I gave it to you, you had a canned response....Can you check again, please?
George: It's gonna be send randomly
George: Yes, I was able to check with my system. sorry, i only needed your system version for documentation purposes.
George: The update will randomly send by our Engineer. And it all users will receive the update batches to batches in over a few week time period.
Just went to Moto's website and did the chat with rep. They explained to me that they are still doing just the test users at this point with Verizon customers and that I will most likely be receiving it over the next couple of weeks.
The "Supervisor" I spoke with later was able to tell me that they can check via a application they have, if I am rooted, my IP, and a few other things.
And......those that are stock, rooted, will not get the OTA.
I don't know whether to wait impatiently, or attempt side-loading ICS.
I just talked to them to and the serial number some how tells them that the device has been rooted.
I even unrooted just to see.

Well i think im just gonna sideload ot anyway. I just need to find the best barney style instructions. Im rooted, i dont use roms so im stock so i just need the best surefire way to make this happen. so it sounds like they can tell if your rooted and even if you unroot with voodoo ota rootkeeper they can still see that your phone is root and maybe they will not be sending out the ota to us rooted folks so maybe it is wise to unroot for a couple of days or a week just to see what happens

[ISSUE] I9300 not Waking up

Hi Guys,
In the past few days ive noticed that if i dont check my phone regularly it will simply refuse to wake up (screen on). I know the phone is still working as the LightFlow settings still use the notification light when needed. I have also had situations where the phone wakes up but theres no touch functions, but locking and waking up again fixes that in 1 try. Has anyone else had this issue or am I going to have to send the phone back?
Thanks
Michael
P.S. The phone is not rooted and hasnt been updated since out the box. Any suggestions to root the phone to fix this will be ignored.
Uninstall LightFlow it has been known to cause this issue.
That is all we can suggest unless your willing to root.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had my HTC Desire rooted and this has put me off rooting my phone at the moment, but I was waiting for the Jelly Bean AOSP anyway.
Not trying to take this too far off topic, but what do you have against root? All root effectively is is an admin mode, you don't have to flash a custom rom.

Over here afaik at least within the first period the seller has to actually prove you caused the damage to refuse the claim.
Having a rooted device will not stand as having caused hardware-damage.
So far I've yet to hear about a single case of warranty being refused in this country due to software modifications.
If it was as simple as putting a "Waranty void if removed" sticker on stuff actually having any meaning, that would be the end of democraty. Fortunately the law tells otherwise and manufacturers have to obey it (or buy their own law... at least in the USA that seems to work)
However it most certainly will make repairs far easier if the device is stock since they cannot even try to blame you for incorrect configurations or bad flashes.

They've removed that button in their bloatware-edition of the Samsung ROM - probably to prevent users from updating over 3G connectivity.

Unlock Bootloader, Post OTA update

Received my replacement phone with OTA update installed. I had ViperDNA on the phone that broke, and miss it very much. :crying: Now, every couple hours, I search through XDA DNA forum, hoping to find our fabulous dev's have found a way arround this formidable roadblock. Thought maybe I'll start a thread all of us in the same boat can watch, and maybe chat, until this egg is cracked. If any dev's have any news for us, that would be great also. :fingers-crossed:
Hi I'm in the same boat. I got this phone yesterday for the first time and did the noob move of updating ota. So I'm just hanging around waiting I'm not even sure where we're supposed to check for news on this.

If you haven't unlocked and have the OTA then you can't unlock until a new method is found.
Is it possible, if I have never unlocked the bootloader or got CID because of latest OTA (2.04.605.2 71RD), to revert back to previous firmware by flashing RUU? would I then be able to run SuperCID apk, get CID and unlock bootloader?

There is no "current" unlock thread. There was an unlock thread from Nov 26th, then another one from Feb 7th. Also, there's an all in one tool kit from Jan 23rd, and a complete guide to root, too. All of these worked with the old firmware.
I'm pretty sure when a new unlock procedure is found, it will get it's own thread.

I tried RUU, multiple times, no go. Just got my replacement phone 2 days ago, like a noob first thing I did was OTA, I thought there was an unlock, wasn't until after I did I realized I should have gotten the unlock.bin FIRST.
I even tried to use the unlock.bin from the DNA I hard bricked. Ofcourse I knew that wouldn't work, but had to try. For 45 plus shipping I guess you can send it to someone and they JTAG and S-off. I looked up how to do it, the box you need is 200$ and you need to take the phone apart, remove battery, and all sorts of junk. I could have unbricked my other DNA with the JTAG method. I would rather wait to see if these guys figure it out. BTW do we know if anyone is even looking into it?

I even tried to use the unlock.bin from the DNA I hard bricked. Ofcourse I knew that wouldn't work, but had to try. For 45 plus shipping I guess you can send it to someone and they JTAG and S-off. I looked up how to do it, the box you need is 200$ and you need to take the phone apart, remove battery, and all sorts of junk. I could have unbricked my other DNA with the JTAG method. I would rather wait to see if these guys figure it out. BTW do we know if anyone is even looking into it?

"If these guys figure it out"??????
Really? It's a puzzle. The Devs here live for figuring out puzzles. It's what they do for fun. It's why we have awesome ROMs etc. They WILL figure it out. Until then we just have to be a little patient. If patience isn't your thing, mail your phone away to MobileTechVideos. I'm interested in hearing first hand if they really do have it cracked. Me personally, I enjoy the rooting process. Doing it myself is half the fun. I'll wait. I got time.

This gives me hope my replacement will be original stock and not the OTA! Had to get a replacment that will show up tomorrow as my screen has a "dead" touchscreen line through it across the screen horizontally (right between the 3rd and 4th row of app shortcuts on the homescreen.
It's really weird...I cannot move any shortcuts in the 4th row above and any shortcuts in rows 1-3, I can move freely but not into the 4th row.
typing on the stock keyboard id doable, but any ttype of swype method (which I need and depend on, is impossible).
If it ships with the OTA I will be bummed

No. Just.... no.
When you get the replacement can you just look at the software version on the box before opening it and if it's the new software send it back and say the box looked damaged and ask them to send a new one with the hope it has the old software?

I manage my company's smartphone account...my rep would get pretty PO'd at me if I kept sending phones back and getting new ones shipped FedEx overnight...lol...but if I was an individual consumer account I would be doing that.
We actually only pay $50/month for 450 min pooled, unlimited data, text and MMS....helluva deal!

[Q] Few questions dealing with Droid DNA

I'm not sure if all of these have been addressed or have a direct answer, but I just wanted to compile everything into
a concise post that I can refer to.
I SHOULD be getting my DNA in the mail today and it SHOULD be fresh out of the box and I am basing the questions off
of that.
Reason for rooting is mainly for the wifi tether app, since I have unlimited data and rather use that then pay for actual service.
1.) Since it should be fresh out of the box are the chances of it being unupdated likely? If so this means I can root it, correct?
2.) I'm pretty new in the rooting field, having only recently rooted my thunderbolt. How comparable will the process be to that?
I had to backdate the software or firmware to be able to do so and am hoping since this is new it wont require that.
3.) I haven't messed with roms too much and was looking at the ViperDNA rom, what would the perks of doing this be? Cons?
I may have future questions later, but this is all I can think of atm.
Thanks ahead of time!

I can almost guarantee you that the OTA will be installed on it and you will not be able to do anything with it until an exploit is found.
The root and S-off process is very easy if you are on the old firmware.
Crap, really? It's the same, power on + vol down process correct?
Even booting up the phone, this is talking if the OEM isn't updated, won't auto start the update, will it?

Well I'm hoping that it will be this way. Should definitely be getting it today and will check it out.
If I can't even root it, I don't know if I will even be activating it.

Boot it up without the sim in it. Let us know, as of last week I would have told you that it's probably not updated. But its been a few days since I've known anyone that got one new in the box.
If it's not updated and you would like me to help you pull and supercid and unlock just send me a pm. If you get offered the update you will want to defer it like 5 days I think is the most it allows.

Got a few -new in box cause I convinced a few retarded reps referbs were the issue- from Verizon n one from amazon. All 2.04

Yea, I just got it an hour or so ago and booted right into the loader and asked in the IRC and I guess the OTA
was already accepted, so I'm sol for a bit.
Not even going to bother activating it, since I mainly use root for tethering.
I picked up the DNA in San Diego from BB for an upgrade on Verizon. It came with Software 1.15.605.4 710RD. I've s-off'd, root'd & TWRP'd with ease. Now I just need CM10.1 and I'll be happy.
I might fly to France and b-slap the CEO of the company who put the DCMA in.
